Shinta

Spoiler

A measly seven years was all that life could spare for the childhood of Shinta Himura, whose parents passed away from cholera shortly after his seventh birthday. Within the week, a group of armed men had shown up on his doorstep with the intent of collecting on debts which had been owed by his family. Despite the boy's best efforts, the men were able to force their way in with little difficulty, leading to the thorough ransacking of the only home he'd ever known.

Furious that the Himuras had effectively defaulted on their agreement, the men swiped the paltry sums which had been carefully stowed away during misses Himura's fading moments of lucidity. For a short while, the men had taken their leave, only to return with an assortment of heavy tools and a bright red canister which had sloshed about with every step. After that, it had been nothing less than the thorough destruction of the Himura residence, featuring everything from sledgehammers to the walls to bricks through the windows and gasoline poured all over old matted carpet. In any case, it had all ended in flames, ignited by the smoldering end of a cigarette so carelessly flicked

As payment for his family's outstanding debts, Shinta was forced into a life of slavery under the watch of the notorious Yakuza. Though things had taken a definite turn for the worse, three women- all of them fellow slaves- made life worth living for. Though their bodies were often tired and worn, their eyes would show nothing but kindness at the end of each day, and he came to think of them as something resembling family.

Seijuro

Spoiler

But even a peace as uneasy and fragile as that came to pass, and all three women were slain in a hit by a hostile gang, alongside the three men who had originally imprisoned him. It was then that a man known as Hiko Seijuro appeared, and dispatched the assailants with as many rounds as there'd been men. With eyes like cement, Seijuro turned to the blood-splattered boy and recommended only for him to head to a nearby town, so that he might take a new lease on life. With a curt nod, the man took his leave. But rather than go, Shinta remained at the solemn scene.

With the expectation that the boy had taken his life, Seijuro returned to the site the following day, intending to bury the bodies. Instead, he was surprised to see that not only had the boy survived the night, but that he had buried the bodies of all of those who had died- from those of the prostitutes, to those who had enslaved him, and even those of his would-be murderers. Impressed by the boy's great kindness and fortitude, the man plucked three badges from his jacket before placing them atop the graves of the three women after hearing of their sacrifice. Taking the boy under his wing, the retired soldier soon bestowed upon Shinta a name more befitting of his strong heart: Kenshin.

Bakumatsu

Spoiler

After years under the guidance of Seijuro, Kenshin's skill with a gun became nothing short of impeccable. But as news of a rebel movement reached his ears, Kenshin found himself becoming increasingly inflamed by the ideals of the Ishin Shishi. Technology had done little to solve the more human problems of inequality and corruption, which were just as prevalent in Japan as they had ever been. Poverty had cursed his bloodline to a life of slavery from the very start, and it was common knowledge that the politicians were awfully cozy with the very syndicates they allegedly fighting...

Against the wishes of his master, Kenshin fled to Kyoto. By the time six months had passed, over a hundred Japanese loyalists had fallen victim to the Ishin Shishi's most notorious assassin, and he found himself wondering how much blood would have to be shed in the name of peace. With every flash of his muzzle, every wisp of smoke which trailed from the end of the jet black barrel, each kill served only to cement the newest moniker whispered on the streets: Battousai, 'He who unsheathes.' While it wasn't a sword which he drew with such blinding speed, the brutality and beauty of his technique lent credence to the idea that this title had not been born purely of jest.

Rurouni

Spoiler

The Bakumatsu incident has since come to an end, culminating in the Ishin Shishi's defeat, and the entire affair was quickly swept under the rug by the Japanese government. In the aftermath, Kenshin manages to avoid capture, owing to a lack of sufficient evidence. Now a free man, Kenshin has sworn to non-lethal ammo, and wanders the countryside, with the hope of someday finding atonement through a life of protection and service.

After scaring off a group of delinquents with a few warning rounds, he finds himself on the receiving end of boundless gratitude from the young man who they'd been harassing. Though initially uncertain about the man's offer for him to test out the bleeding-edge piece of equipment known as the NerveGear, he reluctantly agrees after the man refuses to take no for an answer over the course of several hours and an even greater number of kilometers. Perhaps a bit of virtual reality would take his mind off of things...

» Virtues

|| Courteous ||

Though one might be hard-pressed to find him showing it, Kenshin is loathe to perform even the most menial of tasks on his own. Whether it's cooking, cleaning or even buying the groceries, none are among the things he can claim to enjoy performing. However, he's happy to do them all with a smile in the company of others. Kenshin has a tendency to make friendly conversation with all of those he comes across, and lends a hand to all those who need it.

|| Calm ||

Occasionally prone to episodes of almost slapstick clumsiness, Kenshin is nonetheless held together by an underlying air of calm and control. In spite of his age, he possesses a wisdom which is both both innate and learned, owing in part to a kick-started maturation process. Remaining level-headed even under the threat of danger, Kenshin is more likely to address conflict with words rather than relying on the crutch of combat.

|| Selfless ||

Surely the life of a murderer must be worth less than those of the innocent... It's this sort of mindset which compels Kenshin to put all of those he meets before himself, both in a social sense, as well as in the more tangible manner. Rarely the sort to speak ill of others, he instead speaks to most with the utmost respect, even if it means elevating his company to a level above his own. In the event that decisive action is required, Kenshin will never hesitate to step in to protect the innocent.

» Flaws
|| Aloof ||

So often, courteousness and openness are assumed to go hand-in-hand. After all, those who speak first often have something to say, do they not? But Kenshin is a reminder that surface-level interactions are rarely indicative of people as a whole. In spite of his amicable demeanor, he finds difficulty in truly confiding on those unlikely to understand the weight of his contemplations, therefore writing off the vast majority of the population right from the start. He finds it difficult to grow attached to people, wishing not to put them at risk of danger, and thus continues to wander the land.

|| Inwardly Brooding ||

With too many corpses left behind in his wake, Kenshin often finds himself casting quiet glances over his shoulder. Although he realizes that his heart had been in the right place, he cannot bring himself to forgive the trespasses he'd made against both himself and those around him. As it turned out, wandering in solitude left plenty of time for self-reflection and introspection, both of which he partakes in regularly, only to reach the same conclusions every time. As the executioner of a countless number of individuals, the best he could do was to give his own to those who lived on.

|| Protective ||

By instinct, both men and women alike possess an instinct for self-preservation, and will fight tooth and nail to keep their hearts pumping for even another measly hour. At best, this sentiment might extend to one's children, or perhaps even one's family in general, in the case of truly courageous individuals. Kenshin, on the other hand, holds little regard for his own life. As far as the lives of others, he holds each and every one of them to be precious beyond imagination, and will do everything in his power to save those who find themselves threatened. Consequently, he will rarely seek the assistance of others when dealing with more dangerous matters.
