Summary:

LJgUWM7.png

A <<Frantic-looking Sailor>> sits hunched atop a wooden crate, his feet dangling idly over the pier’s edge. He turns as you approach, a look of hopelessness in his eyes.

"Y-you there! Have you the heart to aid a foolish sailor? You see, this shipment is due for departure come morn… and my ship’s been thieved! It’s those purloinin’ pirates, Greybeard’s lot or something-or-other. I would lead an effort to retrieve it but folks round ‘ere pay no mind to the business of others. Don’t suppose you could lend a hand?”

Should you choose to accept, the sailor turns Eastward and points across the water. He tells you the ship was last spotted near <<Ill Man’s Cove>>, a pier with two run-down shacks built into the adjoining cliff face, reputable for its shady dealings. He also shares details of the crew who stole his ship, including that of a burly man wearing a Captain’s hat. He marks the coordinates on your map and tells you to meet him where you stand by nightfall, making brief mention of his uncle’s rowboat.

Outline:

Participants may choose to roleplay meeting the <<Frantic-looking Sailor>> and his uncle at the docks, but must roleplay arriving at <<Ill Man’s Cove>> on the uncle’s rowboat. The sailor’s uncle will leave after dropping off the participants and the sailor.

Participants may choose where and how to combat the pirates; however, 2 Deckhands will always try to fight alongside each Boatswain. Boatswains receive individual BD rolls, Deckhands may share (though they still require a separate roll from the player).

Once all Deckhands and Boatswains have been defeated, <<Burlock, the Quartermaster>> bursts out from below deck of the stolen ship and howls “Arrggh! Who dares provoke the ire of Greybeard’s Quartermaster?!”

Upon defeating <<Burlock, the Quartermaster>>, the sailor climbs aboard his reclaimed ship and imparts a word of thanks, and offers the participants transport back to port. All mobs below receive separate dice rolls each!

It seemed like it was going to be a rather rainy day on the 16th floor as Calrex materialized in the main island settlement. Looking around at the tropical surroundings he gave a small stretch before immediately making his way towards what appeared to be the docks for the area, his pace and overall posture indicative that he had a set destination in mind. As he continued with his brisk pace the bluenette was rapidly typing on his menu, putting together a message to send out.

@Shield

Feeling up for knocking out a quest before the floor raid begins? If so hope you don't get seasick easily, since we're going to be taking on pirates.

Sending the very brief message the Ultramarine Knight looked forward to see the NPC of interest. His info broker had tipped him off to the appearance of the AI, and from what he could tell it was likely that the designers had based the person off of a fairly popular movie series portrayed by a well known actor, "Guess if they removed enough of the features they wouldn't need to pay royalties."

Approaching the NPC Calrex only had stopped for a second before the man began:
"Y-you there! Have you the heart to aid a foolish sailor? You see, this shipment is due for departure come morn… and my ship’s been thieved! It’s those purloinin’ pirates, Greybeard’s lot or something-or-other. I would lead an effort to retrieve it but folks round ‘ere pay no mind to the business of others. Don’t suppose you could lend a hand?”

Giving a quick nod and accepting the quest the bluenette gave a sigh before putting his left hand into his jacket pocket before lifting his right into the air, his new two-handed battle axe, Grand Legionbane, materializing. Letting the handle rest against his shoulder as the rest stuck out behind Calrex began to look around, "Now the question is if Shield is able to make it. Can only guess his store might be busy with the raid so close at hand."

It had been a frantic day of work, trying to squeeze in his preparations for the boss fight directly after the wedding. However, by the time Calrex had messaged him, Shield had gotten a lot done and was plenty ready for some time out of the shop. He selected the option to send a reply.

'@Calrex

Count me in. I'm on my way.

-Shield'

He made haste towards Taft, jogging most of the way. It reminded him of the first time he and Beat had taken a quest, sprinting across the second floor to start punching a boulder. It was also the first time in SAO that he had stolen Beat's kill. He smirked at the memory as he entered the safe zone, dodging NPC's and mid-level players on his way to the teleportation gate.

"Floor sisteen!"

Finding Calrex did not take long. He had already done a fair bit of study of the new batch of quests that had been discovered and had a good idea of where the NPC meeting would occur. He spotted a familiar shock of blue hair. He waved to his fellow front-liner and fell in beside him just as the copycat character was finishing his spiel.

"By the way, you call call me Bill," he finished up, nodding in greeting to the late arrival. "Bill Burner." Shield slapped his hand to his forehead.

"They didn't work very hard to hide their sources, did they?" he sighed. They boarded the little row-boat with a portly drunkard who Bill introduced as his uncle. The old man hiccuped and proceeded to row them out into the water. "Ill Man's Cove? Was 'Dead Man's Cove' too adult for younger players or something?"

Turning to see his teammate arrive Calrex gave a calm smile and a nod, but this immediately switched to a mix of disappointment and amusement at the same time, something even the bluenette didn't think was possible in terms of human facial expression, "R-Really?..."

It seemed that Shield shared the same as the man slapped his hand to his forehead. Following the NPC over to the boat that would take them over to the quest location Calrex gave a nod, "No...I thought they did a better job than that at first, at least before that name. Maybe the scenario writers were on holiday when the higher ups decided to drop this idea, but for all I know that may be giving them the benefit of the doubt."

Upon hearing mention of "Ill Man's Cove," Calrex felt his jaw loosen as if it wanted to drop, "Geezes it's worse than I thought. I swear if we come across an enemy with a name anywhere close to sound like Barbossa I'm just going to flip a convenient table."

Looking down at his massive axe resting across his legs the bluenette tried to adjust it so that the ends were poking out so much from the edges of the small rowboat, but it certainly wasn't easy, "Mac really went exactly with my description. With all these large weapons I really need to start thinking smarter about the scale of it, or else I might end up getting my weapon stuck in a wall by accident."

"Alright, from what I've heard once we reach the location we've got a handful of pirates to mow through, so if we do this right we might be able to hit the ground running and make quick work of this."

As he spoke Calrex looked up as he felt his avatar come into contact with cold liquid from above. It was already nightfall on the floor when they had departed, but it seemed getting closer to the quest area was bringing about heavy rainfall and slightly rougher waves, as i they were out on the deep sea, "Let's just hope this tiny boat holds together long enough to make the trip, or else we'll have a different problem to deal with."

Shield ignored the NPC's for the rest of the journey. The more quests he had done, the more that one seemed to run into the next. He instead watched their surroundings, noticing a particular island that they were drawing nearer to. On the far side, there was the mast of a ship, which Shield assumed was the missing ship that Bill seemed to be prattling on about. Upon landing, Shield motioned for Calrex to follow him, taking to the trees of the island and leaving Will and his uncle standing confused on the beach, pointing in the direction that the quest had intended for them to walk.

"From what I've read, the first clash is going to be a little chaotic, so keep on your toes, but it shouldn't be anything to worry ourselves over," he said, wading through the underbrush until they came to the treeline on the other side. There, on the beach, there stood a barrel-chested man surrounded by a small band of buccaneers who were toiling to load crates onto the lifeboats that had landed on the beach. "Looks like we caught them preparing to make their way back to the ship. Let's wake them up a little."

He filled his lungs, howling out from the trees and filling the air with sound. "Sailors beware! These waters be cursed!"

The men on the beach froze, then they looked frantically around at one another. Shield charged out, the garish face of his Manticore Mask shield bearing down on the men. At first, they panicked, crashing into one another as they tried to flee, but the largest among them rallied them back together, pointing out the clearly human legs behind the shield. He ran forward, swinging and missing shield, as did the first of the others. From there, a wild frenzy of cutlasses surrounded the players. Only one blow landed on each of them and neither of them took any noteworthy damage.

"This shouldn't take long."

(16+5) * 14 - 40 = 254 Damage to Pirate Deckhand 1-3

Right as Shield had emerged from the trees and initiated combat Calrex gave a calm breath, making sure the Grand Legionbane was still stable resting on his shoulder. Taking a few steps forward the bluenette emerged from the trees into view, seeing the flurry of cutlasses fall against his teammate's shield before rushing into action. He felt the single brush of a sword as one of the deckhands seemed to manage clipping his arm with a cutlass. With a single step <<Charge>> triggered and he felt his body be taken over by the assisted system. "Let's see if this weapon lives up to the name."

His massive two-handed axe began to glow, starting at the two heads of the striking point before carrying down to the hilt with a shining light hue. He could feel the digital rain began to slap harder against his face before coming into striking range of the cluster of enemies, "Now...EXPLODE CATAPULT!"

The first wide sweeping swing caught two of the deck hands in the abdomen, sending them reeling back from the impact. Following the motion Calrex felt his entire body arch to the right as the second swing caught the third, while the fourth was lucky to duck and avoid the blow. The two swings clustered the three into a straight line as the final attack came around, the giant axe head coming from above to crash into the three caught by the first two blows, crushing them into crystals that escaped from beneath the impact on the ground.

"Aright three down."

"Not enough to have the highest defensive potential in the game, I see," Shield quipped, elbowing the last of the subservient buccaneers in the nose, forcing him to stumble back. "Now you have to switch to two-handed axe and try to horn in on the high DPS builds as well."

He had already half-way charged up a ball of energy for Calrex when the boatswain finally seemed to get his bearings, gritting his uneven teeth and launching himself at Shield. Unfortunately for him, the only remaining crewman was just doing the same after Shield's elbow, and the two collided, knocking each other to the ground. Shield sighed, tossing the now finished energy ball over to Calrex.

"It looks like you'll be needing this more than you used to," he added. "Martial Arts is costly, but it's got nothing on those high level axe AoE's." It was not without its benefits though. The beach was already much emptier than it had been just a few moments ago.

Sword Art <<All Might>> Activated + <<Charge>> (17 Energy Used / 1 Recovered / 134 Remaining)

Upon receiving the ball of energy from Shield Calrex gave a smirk, reaching out with his free hand to grab the orb of light before it was absorbed into his avatar, partially restoring his energy, "Hey, when you get to this point for me it makes sense to start pulling double duty. Besides, those strikers need someone to make them start sweating anyway, right? Appreciate the upkeep of energy though!"

Lifting the Grand Legionbane off his shoulder the bluenette swung it to the side as it vanished into lights, both of his forearms being enveloped in the Grand Gauntlets III, the result of his <<Quick Switch>> skill mod, "Only two left, might as well wrap this up with this. I'll probably need a moment to switch back to axe again before the next fight though, as I don't really have a way to quickly switch back at the moment. Part of the reason why I want to get this finished before the raid."

Smashing his right fist into his left palm before lowering into his Martial Arts stance, Calrex immediately rushed and combine triggered <<Charge>> and <<All Might>> as his body turned into a streak for a brief moment. Flying across the ground with a powerful dash his right punch crashed into the remaining deckhand's jaw, sending the pirate flying back and bursting into crystals with the single strike.

"Alright, that just leaves the big guy there."

Shield tossed the next load of energy to Calrex, sitting back as he waited for the boatswain's move. Whatever it decided to do would be of little consequence. "You know, I've spent so much of my time in SAO hunting down faceless vagabonds of various types. It started with thieves. Then the thieves moved out of the cities and became bandits. Now the bandits have pushed out to the ocean and became pirates."

The boatswain seemed to take exception to such sentiments and charged him, slashing through Shield's body. His health remained practically unchanged, while almost a quarter of the pirate's health vanished at once.

"You'd think they'd eventually just start running away when players like us show up." If not for cardinal, Shield was certain this one would have by now. It finally connected after several attempts, and not only had all of his crew died before then, but the attack itself did more damage to the attacker than to the intended target.

Sword Art <<All Might>> + <<Charge>> (17 Energy Used / 1 Recovered / 126 Remaining)

"Heh, if you follow that trend you're making it sound like us players are constantly forcing these types of enemies to be on the run and migrating. I can't think of what archetype will follow pirates after this, since we've already covered the three main ones."

Accepting another energy orb from Shield Calrex immediately rushed at the boatswain, whom had just scored a lucky blow against his tankier teammate. Fist already drawn back and glowing with <<All Might>>'s fury the bluenetter triggered <<Charge>> and accelerated even further, closing the distance at breakneck speed before coming to a stop fast enough to cause a normal human some form of internal damage in the real world. His fist followed this momentum and shot forward like a cannonball, slamming into Boatswain Amir's face with enough power to drop his health bar even further with a single blow, enough that it put him within the death threshold for Shield's Thorns enhancement.

Stepping back the bluenette gestured at the enemy pirate towards Shield, "Well, come on then. We've got some more of your mates to deal with right?"

"Idunno," he said, trying to follow that line of reasoning further. "Let's see how nature dealt with it. Cuz first, it started with rats. Then rats learned to fly and became pigeons. Then pigeons learned to swim and became seagulls. I think we can draw some parallels there. Then next logical step would be some kind of bottom feeder, so maybe the pirates will learn how to hold their breath and become a bunch of crab people."

Shield flicked his wrist as he tossed Calrex another batch of energy to fuel his fists. With the rate of use and the estimated number of pirates still to handle, Shield very much doubted it was necessary to continue pumping energy into him, at least for now. Perhaps it was time to go on the offensive. It would have to wait for the next fight, though. His weapons of choice was not in his battle-ready inventory.

In any case, the remaining sea dog was having a lot of trouble containing his temper amidst all of the pirate bashing. He took the hilt of his sword in both hands now and swung, but in his rage, he miscalculated the distance to Shield and missed him altogether.

"Crab thieves huh? So...coconut crabs potentially? This might get weird then if we encounter another tropical style floor higher up then."

Upon receiving the energy Calrex watched as the last remaining enemy of the current mob group tried to take a swing at Shield, and missed. Giving a small sigh the bluenette gave a shrug before taking a few steps forward, his right shin now aglow with another Sword Art. Bringing his other knee up high enough he felt the assisted system take over as his body was pulled forward, kicking leg raised before executing <<Leaping Crane>>, the flying kick slamming into the back of Boatswain Amir's as the man burst into crystals.

Landing on his feet the Ultramarine Knight gave a nod to his teammate, "Alright, one group down. Just a few more and we should be done. Seems like if this keeps up we should be able to make i before the raid commences...hopefully."

"Three more skill points is all I need to complete the battle system I learned, but if this doesn't work out I'll still be able to use it, albeit with a lower overall damage output because I won't be able to switch as smoothly in one direction."

With the first of the crew dispatched, it left them with an empty beach and a ship anchored out off in deeper waters. "Well, I guess the vessel isn't going to recapture itself," Shield said, gesturing towards one of the life boats. "We'll use what's available to make our daring attack."

He waited for Calrex to board before hunkering down and throwing his weight into the prow of the little boat, forcing it back out into the water in the opposite direction from its landing. He hopped the waves and landed in the boat, stepping and centering himself by the oarlocks. This wasn't the first time he had needed to make use of a boat in SAO, but it had been a while. Throwing his shoulders into it, he paddled until they reached the ship. Keeping his voice low, he turned to Calrex.

"We'll need to get on quietly, or boarding is going to be a pain. They're not going to hoist the lifeboat, I'd assume, which leaves us one real option." He pointed towards the rope for the anchor. "I'll see you up there."'

Shield grabbed onto the rope, which was thankfully dry above the water, and pulled himself up the length until his hands could reach the deck. He hoisted himself up and landed on the deck directly between two pirates, a man and a somewhat decorated woman, who seemed to have been so engrossed in whatever they were talking about that they hadn't even noticed someone was coming. With a quick breath, Shield shouted in their faces, though the message was not for them. "Company is waiting when you get up here!"

Flustered by the appearance, both swung at him, but only one managed to connect, immediately regretting it with the damage she had taken in return.

As Shield made his way up the line for the anchor Calrex gave a nod, letting the man get some distance ahead before he himself began to climb up. Unfortunately, since there was no way for them to attach the smaller boat they had used to reach the stolen vessel. Immediately after, a strong enough wave pushed the rowboat out of stepping distance right after the bluenette began his ascent, "Great, no way back down now."

It wasn't long after his teammate had disappeared over the side into the boat when he suddenly heard Shield's roar echo outwards as a signal to him, "Geezes, I'm still making my way up."

Strengthening his grip with his gauntlets serving as a cushion he quickly began to hoist himself up faster and faster until pulling himself over the side into the larger craft. Already on his feet Calrex saw the two enemies already at work, his eyes locking onto the near carbon copy of the other four minions they had fought moments ago. Kicking off of the railing the bluenette shot through the air with <<All Might>> charged and rocketing faster with <<Charge>>, coming in fast as his fist cracked across the man's face before the AI opponent burst into crystals. Sliding to a stop Calrex turned to face the remaining enemy, taking a quick moment to stabilize himself as another wave rushed against the boat, causing it to rock.

With the last crewman down, the boatswain bared her teeth, her shoulders heaving with rage. "What happened to the rest of the crew?" she bellowed, brandishing her sword, but hesitating to attack after what had happened the last time she tried. In the mean time, Shield tossed more energy Calrex's direction, not taking his eyes from the boatswain.

"Well, if you're worried about them, we can send you the same place we sent them."

That did it. Eschewing her hesitation, rage won out. She slashed at Shield over and over again, he blade passing effortlessly through him and leaving no real mark to speak of. As she stumbled back a few moments later though, she herself was covered in a myriad cuts and scorches that radiated with a fiery orange light. Her hair was disheveled, hanging down int strands across her face. The real concern for her was her health bar, which had fallen below half and glowed a bright yellow.

"Aaaaand that's exactly what your pals did. Great job following their mistake."

As the remaining boatswain rushed at Shield, only to be repelled by the stalwart defenses of the man. At the same time Calrex gave a small sigh before taking a single step forward, "Guess we'd better send her to Davy Jone's locker already. Apologies about the face in advance."

Triggering both <<All Might>> and <<Charge>> once again the bluenette shot forward like a bullet before his right fist smashed into the AI enemy's face, lasting for a quick moment before his punch passed through the cluster of crystals that was once the boatswain.

Sliding to a step on the damp deck Calrex spun around to face Shield, "Well that clears out the smaller guys. Supposedly there's one more big guy remaining, probably below deck..."

“Arrggh! Who dares provoke the ire of Greybeard’s Quartermaster?!”

"Whelp I think he just showed up. Why not show him who has the louder holler?"

Turning to face the staircase that led below deck the bluenette began to clench his right fist, preparing to go on the attack.

Shield didn't need the invitation, but he didn't see any reason to disappoint. His chest expanded and with a focused torrent of sound, he belted out, "Who in the hell calls himself 'Greybeard!?' There is nothing at all intimidating about an old, hairy sailor!"

The force of his voice and the wind it created rustled the quartermaster's beard and hair, and it whipped his triangular hat clean off of his head, leaving only the bandanna beneath it to control the mess of hair below it. The pirate blinked for a moment before drawing his curved blade, which was narrower than the others Shield had seen the others using, as well as being of a higher quality. With one hand on his back hip and his knees bent, the pirate turned his hand over, blade down towards the deck to protect his legs.

"...He's saber fencing?" Sure enough, as he moved, he shuffled his feet smoothly forward, the right always staying ahead of the left as he slashed at Shield with quick precise strikes. "That would be very effective," he began, his eyes on those of the head pirate. "Unfortunately, I aim to be hit." The buccaneer's health bar began to fall already, his attacks yielding none of the intended results.

Calrex raised an eyebrow for a moment as he watched the quartermaster assume an actual saber fencing stance with a lower guard to protect his leg, "Well, I'll give the game designers this, the definitely got the posture down..."

However, as the man began to attack Shield, the bluenette saw all sense of realism as the flurry of strikes began to strike against his teammate's armor, "...aaand I guess even that might be too much credit. Now he's not even slashing with proper form. Let's see if a neck adjustment fixes that."

By that point his fist became fully covered in the shining blue light of <<All Might>>, which seemed to pierce through the darkness and rain of the evening water setting. Taking a step forward he felt his body become locked in the assisted system, also triggering <<Charge>> once again. Streaking across the deck like a bolt of light the Ultramarine Knight appeared in front of the quartermaster before smashing his fist into the man's face, the impact force causing him to slid back across the desk.

Landing on his feet Calrex gave a nod to Shield, "This is going to go quick, especially with that strike."

Taking advantage of the fencing style that his opponent was using, Shield decided to try for a little extra damage in the fight. While his attacks on their own were pitiful, he could always use the pirate's skill against him. Shield took his own stance, holding his sword out with his wrist firm but ready to move. However, as he concentrated on his form, his eyes narrowed, and that seemed to shiver the quartermaster's timbers.

The seafarer stumbled, stopping his feet short of the proper distance to make a real attack and swiped his saber inches short of Shield's nose. It was an outright miss, which honestly, was exactly what Shield did not want. "Well, I tried," he groaned, straightening back up a little into a more relaxed stance. "I can't counterattack an attack that can't hit, and my thorns can't hurt him that way either. Looks like this fight is up to you, Calrex."

As Shield prompted him to act Calrex stepped forward, his right fist still blazing light blue with <<All Might>>'s fury. Raising up his fist the bluenette gave a calming breath, "Just keep focused, this is almost over."

The quartermaster staggered back into his stance as the bluenette gave a small sigh, "You've got good form, but seems like that's all you've got." With a quick step forward the Ultramarine Knight felt his body lock into the assisted system's grasp before letting his avatar rocket forward, arm drawn back, "Empty strikes aren't going to change anything."

Throwing his fist forward Calrex watched as the man began to raise his sword arm up, a few sparks flying off of where saber and gauntlet grazed each other, but not enough for it to clash as the bluenette's fist smashed into Burlock's face once again, sending him sliding even further back across deck until connecting with the wall next to the captain's quarters.

Sliding to a stop the Ultramarine Knight gave a nod, "Well let's see if he's able to get a good hit in before this is over."

Carrying the momentum of Calrex's attack, Shield jumped in behind him. He took a few swipes of his own with his sword. They were not powerful strikes, but it might at least serve to keep the pirate off balance until the final blow could be struck. The quartermaster continued to retreat, turning once he hit the ship's side and sliding back. He tried to create some distance by swiping at Shield once again, but his attack once again fell short, banging harmlessly off of the Manticore Mask.

The once bold and brazen pirate was now on the run. He abandoned his form, turning tail and running, grabbing up a fistful of the rigging and swinging up into the jungle of ropes and wooden pulleys to try to get even a little distance as a buffer. Shield's hands were entirely full, but the nice thing about being a martial artist was it meant Calrex could be both armed and open-handed at the same time.

"Alley-oop," he called out, dropping to one knee and laying his shield arm over the forearm of his sword hand, creating a basket of sorts to boost Calrex with a toss. "We're close enough to the end. Let's not give him room to get comfy!"
