By this point, Shield figured that the system had had plenty of time to respawn some of the treasure in the area. They had, after all, been at this for over an hour at this point. Shield set down his rod and gave his neck and shoulders a good stretch before taking a wide sweep around the area. The terrain was a little rougher here than on the entrance side. He combed carefully through the stone debris that littered the area, looking behind boulders and picking his way along uneven surfaces to see if either his eyes or his earring picked up anything of note.

After rounding the bend of the lake a little ways, one of those things happened. Seeking Aura lit like a candle, casting a warm glow over his shoulder and the dimly lit ground. He glanced at the lake first, and was pleased to see there was not a shadowy outline of a chest in the water. Looking further up the bank, Shield saw something between some of the stones. He took the distance at a jog, making his way there to find a growth of fungus that had partially overgrown what appeared to be a canvas tarp of some sort. Pulling it back, he released a cloud of spores from the growth, but revealed there a treasure chest, just as he had hoped to find.

After a few moments Shield returns confirming the nomad's suspicions, as a cloud of fungi sprays about with each pat of his coverings. Another reel of his pole yields another small gain, easily removed and easily unhooked. A minor morsel that proved more of a difference to the actual target than anything. There was quite a sizable amount of fish but the true goal's thirst was still unquenched. A debt unsettled, one Raidou was eager to repay although he would not allude to the fact, as from experience people did not enjoy the fact he felt indebted to them. Moving the line around along the surface in an honest effort to actually avoid the greedy mass of shadows that wouldn't leave the line alone long enough for it to sink in. Drifting slightly below the water, still visible red and white cast through the refracted reflection Raidou hopes for silence to befall it and allow it the bed.

Shield bent down and fished out his key ring, though this time there were no choices to be made. There was only one key left. It was a benchmark that he had hoped to cross after having had more success, but for now it was what it was. He took the last key and held it to the lock, watching as the golden item melted away into nothing. The lid popped open, and simply from the amount of Col, Shield knew exactly what to expect from the rest of the contents. It was a disappointing way to end the first leg of their search. Shield dismissed the window and the empty chest and straightened back up.

Striding over to the place where he had left his tackle. He recovered his pole, checking his line for kinks or snarls before preparing for a cast.

I hope that means I've gotten all of the bad luck out of my system, but I'll just have to see what's to come. Could be this whole trip is going to be this way.

He wished he had something wooden to knock on, but for now, he would just have to hope to himself that he hadn't jinxed himself.

Another paltry yield from a stubborn pond, an overbearing cardinal extruding a wasteland of misfortune on the duo. It was an uphill battle to be sure, Raidou was still sitting uneasily in the fact that the attempts were so seemingly random. Another small beast on the line that Raidou no longer seems to struggle with, the finer points strengthening his grip as muscles he had hardly used were now seeing some action. Removing the creature and tossing it to the side, nothing more than a distraction from ideal goals with determination painted on his brow, Raidou tosses it toward the front of the pond. An earnest attempt to route the fish, like a general on a battlefield dispatching force with the goal to coerce the assailants to chose: Shield's bobber or his own as they could not have both. An odd decision, but the lake felt like a warzone Raidou was eager to best with tactics.

Shield let his line continue to sit where it was, refusing to disturb it until it came back with something. He took the situation and laid it out for himself. It was a conundrum. The sheer odds, the unbelievable, overwhelming odds of it, did not match his experiences in the past. Of course chests were hard to find, but except for a brief burst a while ago and perhaps one other fluke, it had been strictly on-shore gathering mission, and he could not accept that.

So what am I missing here? Something is wrong, and we have to figure out what. So let's look at our current tactics. We need to get down deeper in the lake. Catching thins on the surface means never getting to the bottom to snag a chest, and attracting fish is counter-effective for our aims. That means...

He laid out the pieces of equipment that were used in fishing. There was a sinker, to keep the hook from sitting on the surface and bunching up There was the line itself. There was the hook...

The bait... it's bringing us fish, and we're not here for fish. If we're trying to hook chests, drawing fish is not helpful to us. And the bobber... how can the hook get to the bottom if something is pulling it back up to the top?

"We need to completely change our strategy."

A darkened reflection causes the shades under the pool of water, his bobber causing the fish to become confused and stuck halfway between both player's lines. A division of forces produced the necessary confusion through the method, they list about unsure of the next course of action. This brings about both lines sinking further than had been allowed prior. Just a little more Raidou thought in the silence the odds turned with a tactical approach, perhaps it would be enough to finally reach the bed. Tanking through this ordeal was daunting, but neither player was a stranger to difficulty and neither was going to give up easily. The cardinal system should know better than to challenge those who were the first into the fray and the last out with a stream of bad luck. A shift of the line beckons them into further chaos, Raidou exploiting pressure on the table to cast a broadened divide.

After letting his hook sit out in the water, something finally took notice. His reel began to turn, but his fingers were quick to stop the crank and he made short work of the fish that had decided to make a meal of his bait. As soon as it was on shore and stored in his inventory, he set about doing surgery on his line. He cut the bobber loose and cut the excess line off of the hook and sinker. The bobber he discarded in his tackle box.

Won't be needing that.

The bare end of the line, he looped through the eye of his hook and tied skillfully into a tight knot, making sure it was a knot that would tighten when pulled rather than trying to pull free. Finally, he clamped the soft lead weight onto the line a little ways above the hook, making sure the soft lead sinker was not going to hinder anything snagging onto the hook itself.

"There are some fish that only eat by filter feeding," Shield said, looking over his handiwork. "In those cases, you essentially just have to try to hook their open mouth through sheer luck. That's essentially what we're trying to do here, just with chests instead of fish."

As soon as the line is retracted the hungry mouths on darkened shadows make a tear toward Raidou's bobber. A small fish clamps on before a larger one clamps on over top of it, like a nesting doll the smaller vanishes into the larger. Raidou rebukes and starts to tear the line back to the water's edge with a rip outward, luckily the line holds as his only intention is salvaging time and not particularly interested in keeping the attachment in plated scales. But it stays on and follows it completely out, Raidou decks it with a bit of fire in his stomach, killing it outright before unhooking it. "I wonder." Raidou theorized on Shield's notion, peeling his more standardized tool to essentially a grappling hook with a reel. Raidou had a different idea, another method that may prove of some use. Not having something to suit what he would need, he removes a glass vial and shifts some sand into the bottle and corks it once it's filled adequately. A few precise knots like gift wrapping a present, he throws it back toward the water, and the weight causes it to bubble and begins to sink quickly.

Shield watched Raidou's approach. He was sure there was a method to the madness, but for the time being, he was far more interested in seeing if his own setup could be successful. He looked it over, making sure the parts that were being used were attached properly before winding up and tossing out into the water. Without the bobber to slow it down, the lead weight on the end of the thin, aerodynamic line had far less drag than usual and sailed actually a little further than he had expected.

It landed with a distant 'bloop,' which was to be expected, since the smaller profile would mean a cleaner entry to the water. As it sank, he let the reel feed out naturally, watching the line extend very slowly as the weight on the end pulled just a little more and a little more free from the spindle. "We'll find out soon enough if either of these designs work..."

It sinks albeit slowly as what little air was trapped in the vial is sussed out as a bit of water allows it to bubble free. The reel continues to turn as it sinks deeper and deeper into the depths of the pool, showing that it may have been deeper than the first perceptions had projected it to be. Either that or he had found a slope where it pressed lower than the rest of the body of fluid. It was semantics at this point however as the method seemed to function as intended, Raidou sat idle and allowed the spool to spin hoping that this time the result would be different and the lack of bait would allow the beasts to leave the line alone. It would surely be different this time, Raidou could feel the fear that it would not be enough welling within him. "Here's hoping." Raidou remarks with the still vibrating apparatus in his grasp.

The reel stopped feeding out, which meant that it had hit bottom. This was the starting point at least. Shield began to reel in slowly, careful not to move too quickly in case the hook might move past something without properly having the opportunity to snag. He moved the crank one little click at a time, feeling the slight give and tension of the hook moving across the floor. Occasionally there would be little pings as it started to snag on something, but the hook would skip over it a moment later.

Likely a stone, something hard enough to snag, but not soft enough to bite into.

Eventually, the line came clean out of the water, nothing to show for it. "That's okay though," Shield said, giving a nod. "Part one of the theory holds water. It made a clean drag of the bottom." He cast out once again. However, before it could hit the water, a fish saw the movement and, mistaking it for an insect, leaped from the water and grabbed his hook. "Great..."

Raidou's tackle continued to sink until the line stopped the grinding, as it connected with the hidden sand at the obvious sand near the bottom. Now moving about a blind tether shifting about the bottom like an anchor from a ship, he starts to shift it around slowly hoping to catch something at the base. Finding nothing more than a vacuum of activity as it slides around with obvious movement only showing on the surface with ripples drawn like an arrow. The weight on the tool causes it to bend more than the lighter attachments, the pressure of the water providing little aid in this effect on its curve. "You'd think they were starving to death in here, although their size shows otherwise. But how aggressively they charge after every morsel of food. It's like a frenzy." Raidou speaks softly to Shield, mainly just an investigation on the matter as his thoughts play to spoken word.

Shield groaned, setting his feet to battle the fish that he had unintentionally snagged. It was not a hard battle, but it was one he hadn't been interested in fighting in the first place. As he landed the fish and it fell into its separate parts, there appeared to be a second smaller fish inside of it that then also transitioned into cuts of fish. "Well, I can't say I was expecting any of that," he sighed. Reeling his line the rest of the way back to his pole, he took a wide swing back and hurled the line forward.

Assuming nothing bites the line, the further I drag it along the bottom, the more area it will cover, and the more chances to snag something.

The tackle at the end of the line vanished into the dark, too small to see in the minimal illumination. He could barely even hear it hit the water when it did so. He sat and he waited, watching the line as it fed slowly out from the reel as his hook sank.

A continued shimmy of the silver line of cable along the water, raking the bottom with constant readjustment hoping to hit paydirt. Occasionally a snag requires a shift or change in flow, but other than this fact the effort seems rather: empty. Raidou does not yield though, through persistent and constant struggle his method may just find a foothold yet. Shield's seemed to be the opposite as if the bait was nothing more than a formality as the fauna kept ripping and tearing away at a bare hook. The nomad's eyes narrow a bit, perplexed to no end at the strange feral behavior of the water dwelling creatures. This fight was not over yet, an uphill one where the victor would go the spoils. The cardinal system chose the wrong player type to an attempt at forced discouragement, to a tank this was just another solo'd quest and tenacity was the name of the game.

The line fed out gradually at first. Then if fed out a little faster. Then even faster. Shield rolled his eyes. "Apparently, a fish just wanted a free lip piercing for no reason today." He caught the line and pulled, beginning the process of reeling in the foolish fish. It fought back, but not enough to slow Shield's progress much. "I swear, the bait must just be a formality. A placebo to make the player feel like they're properly fishing. The more and more we do this, the more it truly seems like there is no logic to any of it." He pulled his catch ashore, storing it away with the mountain of others that he had found so far. "We might as well keep it up to see if this is just a fluke or not," he said with a sigh.

No, that won't do. We're in it to win it. Can't let the bad luck get to us.

With a deep breath, Shield cleared his mind. Eventually luck would turn. There had been small breaks in the bad fortune. They just needed to keep pushing to find another and hope that they luck kept turning in their favor.

With an adamant glance to Shield it appeared as though he was every bit of determined as Raidou was, compared to actual combat this was nothing more than childs play. A sudden latch, Raidou hopes for the best as he begins to draw the line. To his dismay however, the line comes free to show a bright red crustacean latched upon the line, its pincer clamped on hard with its dangling six appendages writhing about. "You have got to be kidding." Raidou thought, with a lit blue slap of the creature wipes it out. Apparently there were bottom dwellers in this lake, curious still as he was sure this source couldn't be saltwater. He sighs and simply presses the cap on the bottle on tight to keep it solid, tossing the cabling back to the water a little worse for wear but not about to call it a day after all they had been through so far.

His resolve renewed after his little mental pep talk, he tossed out his line, waiting patiently for it to finish sinking. Once the line settled, no longer feeding out from the reel, he began to wind it back up, pulling little by little, feeling for snags, assessing what his fingers felt through the pole, until finally the line caught and did not come free. He tugged, his pole bent, but nothing else acted against his force aside from passive resistance.

"I think I might have something."

He pulled harder and felt the friction of something heavy sliding along the bottom. With renewed fervor, Shield began to haul in his line, reeling and pulling to bring in his catch little by little until finally, the rounded lid of a treasure chest crested the surface of the water. "Well, there's now some evidence for and against our methods. We just have to play the numbers and see what happens from here!" With one final heave, he pulled the chest the last little bit of the way to the shore.

Looking on to Shield as he heaved a box back from the water, confirming their suspicions kind of. It still felt like a coin flip given Raidou's small shelled friend producing a counter argument moments prior. "Still seems all too, random." Raidou remarked to the sentiment, running the values in his head that didn't seem to show any sort of pattern other than that there was not one. A tug on his line as he drew it along, perhaps this would be the deciding factor. Raidou heaved and pulled, but the snag did not portray the scale of it being a box. A hope that perhaps it was a small one or one that was more on the empty side? Raidou pulls out another albeit smaller crap from the water. With a sigh he chucks the bottle back in, allowing it to carry the line with it as it fell.

Kneeling down beside the chest, Shield set to work. With his first key ring empty, he went to the next in line, still leaving 5 untouched rings. They were going to be here for a while at this rate, but no matter. These things took time, and the two of them were in it to win it. He sifted through the different golden items, inspecting the ends before he found one that he felt fit the style and shape of the keyhole. He held it out to the lock. With a jingle and a click and a pop, the display menu was open in front of him once more. He gave a sigh of relief.

"Okay," he said, with a nod. "It's not amazing, but it's more than just basic consumables and crafting materials." He collected the items and dismissed the menu, returning to his tackle and spooling up the rest of his line. "I think it's about time to go on patrol as well," he said his tone bright and enthused for the first time in the better part of an hour.

Shield seemed just a tad disappointed by the result, as a slight slink of his shoulders had shown that perhaps it was not worth the consumable used. A constant string of bad luck fought through in earnest as the pair struggled in the misfortune. Raidou knows the routine, and a simple nod confirming an aknowodlegement of Shield's intentions for he would guard the gear while he trekked around the area. If it was a matter of chance, then it should roundabout eventually and they would swim in it. It was this principle that was driving at least the nomad forward, with another casted line in a thin tether to the water causing a soft plop to its surface. Shifting it about with a sigh, Raidou was determined to see this through in his silence while he waited for Shield's return hoping that perhaps he would have a turning point on the perimeter.
