’I’m going to die.’
It was going down. Still going down. Emptying. Draining. Disappearing. Returning to n̴̪̍o̴̘̽t̷͍̕h̴̛͍i̶̢͊n̶͎͋g̸̹͛.
’I’m going to die…!’
She couldn’t see the green anymore. Telrenya’s eyes snapped back to attention where Wulfrin stood before her, arm outstretched, point of his blade at her chest. Her body came back to life in a rush that flooded her and she stumbled backwards, landing hard on the ground. Everything was shaking. Her hands, her eyes, her knees, her shoulders trembled with an overpowering, unseen force that clawed at the very fabric of her mind. The words kept repeating. They didn’t even feel like hers anymore. But she had to do something–she had to act–she had to live.
Her fingers were moving on their own. Digging through her pockets, grasping for something of use. She practically turned her battle-ready inventory inside out and she was only rewarded with the two tournament-approved items she’d brought with her. Her hand flew to the healing crystal that had clattered to the floor and she squeezed it until it shattered.
It wasn’t enough.
A small pill box clattered across the floor as she smacked into it. Where had the color gone? Was this place just so dreary and dank that even the mold between the cobblestones turned to a lifeless grey?
’Crunch’
Sanity tablets snapped as they broke between her teeth. Telrenya held a hand over her mouth. She felt her stomach turn. Wulfrin’s words had long since echoed and fell across the arena by the time her wits came back to her. ”What…?” Player death? Concede? …What had she just been doing?
Flustered, she picked herself up to her feet, awkwardly grabbing her rapier along the way. She dusted herself off a bit. ”I-I’m okay! I’m sorry.” Her eyes were hesitant to linger on anyone or anything for more than a second. Her cheeks were stained an undeniable shade of pink. ”I can continue, if that’s what’s causing any problems.”

He was incredibly well-spoken, almost intimidatingly so. His formality, composure, and polite demeanor all intermingled together in a way that seemed well-suited to him, she thought. She watched as he plucked away at the strings while he spoke, and the return of his question gave her pause. How long had it been? Since Ruby died. Since she’d learned about her brother’s death. Since they’d been trapped here.
”It’s… It is hard to keep track, now that you mention it.” She forced out, having searched for an answer that would never come to light. She wondered if anyone knew exactly how long it had been since their first days in Aincrad. She almost didn’t want to know. Months, years… At least a year had to have passed by now, right? Maybe even more than one? Recent things, when it was just a month or so ago that the newest floor had been unlocked, things like that were clear. It was easy to remember. But the disbanding of her guild, that party at Ryo’s mansion, her separation from Jomei… How long ago had all of those things happened?
Her brows knit and she shook her head, lest it ache under the weight of her troubled memory. ”I’m not sure exactly.” She was pained to admit. ”Many months, certainly.” It felt like she’d been gone a lifetime. Twice over for her brother. Letting out a steady sigh through her nose, she took a few small steps towards the center of the monument to look for one more name.
The last of the flowers she’d brought were laid beneath the column bearing Lowenthal’s name. Dark gray paper wrapped around orange chrysanthemums and yellow crocuses for the one she’d never actually met. Even so, he sounded to have been a good friend to Jomei and Ryo alike, and if nothing else she wished she could have known him.
With the last of her offerings placed, she took a seat on the steps. ”How did you survive?” She’d ask after a short time. ”If you don’t mind me asking… Has it changed your opinion of the frontlines? Do you ever still hope to make it there?”
-
Another bundle of flowers. Red hibiscus and yellow roses cradled in white parchment, this one placed on practically the other end of the monument. She stole a glance at Ruby's name before turning back in time for Boreas' fomral introduction. He shared his own reason for visiting and the people he mourned. "Your whole guild...?" She echoed with disbelief. The thought made her heart hurt. How heavy would her shoulders feel if it wasn't just Ruby's name crossed out from the Holy Dragon Alliance. Ruby, Kimi, Hestia, Spencer, Jomei...
A somber silence fell between them, as did Telrenya's eyes. "That's... That's awful. I'm sorry for your loss." Her lips pursed into a hard line, knowing that no kind words could ease that kind of pain. Not really. She could feel that little tickle at the back of her throat just sitting with that uncomfortable hypothetical and turned her head back to the monument before it overcame her. ”One of my friends here was a guildmate, too.” She spoke up again weakly. A smile wrought with emotions played on her lips as she reminisced. ”We weren’t exactly a frontline guild, but she was one. She was so tough.” Telrenya finally had to bring a hand up to hastily wipe away the beads of moisture that welled in her eyes.
”How long has it been?” She asked.
-
He was quiet. Everything was quiet. As her eyes ran over the space between them, they eventually landed on the sword in his hand. Her brows twitched in the absence of recognition. That wasn’t the same weapon he’d used in his previous matches, was it? She was all but certain that was the primary source of the ice effects that he’d been dominating with until now…
There she was again. Distracted.
The blade she held at the ready may as well not have even been there. A swift clash of metal and Dawnbreak was pushed aside like a mild inconvenience. Her stunned expression lingered as every part of her seized up following Wulfrin’s single strike. Her body refused to move and her health bar plummeted. In an instant, panic overtook her mind. It coalesced with the overwhelming emptiness–that idea of nothingness--that surrounded them. It plagued her. How long before they, too, became nothing? Her panicked eyes shot to the measure of her life. Disappearing. Emptying. Her body trembled. Her breath shook as a single thought clouded her mind.
’I’m going to die.’

She smiled warmly at his polite demeanor and cast a glance over her shoulder at his invitation for small talk. "Yes," She gave a single nod, "it's a bit of a new practice for me, but I wanted to start leaving flowers for some of the people I knew." Her cheeks took on the slightest touch of pink embarrassment after saying it out loud, and she shifted back to the bundles cradled in her arms. Pulling one aside, she set it down gently underneath the column where her brother's username was listed.
Blue irises intermingled with daisies were wrapped in pale yellow paper. She wasn't good with the language of flowers, so she was thankful for the knowledgeable NPC that had helped her pick out just the right combinations of blooms and colors for each of her loved ones. They settled in place and she'd straighten back up. There they would lay until gradually, eventually, their durability would run out and they'd disappear without a trace. Until next she would arrive to replace them.
"My name's Telrenya." She offered. Being called 'Miss' didn't bother her any, but she also didn't mind matching his pleasantries.
-
Out of all the locales their hosts had arranged for this tournament, the dreadful floor 29 hadn't even crossed Telrenya's mind as a possibility. She shifted uncomfortably as she stood at one side of the decrepit arena, stealing nervous glances between her opponent Wulfrin on the other end and their host Kindling off to the side. Her hand went to grasp the handle of her rapier as he called to address them, but before she could draw the blade free from its scabbard she made the mistake of following his voice and his gesture towards the otherworldly entity looming above.
Telrenya stood as an insignificant mote of dust beneath its visage. Her hopes, her dreams, the very essence of her soul paled in comparison to the symphony of the universe--a tune which she would never truly be able to comprehend. She was not a cog in the machine nor a single stroke of a painter's brush. No, in that moment the only thing that truly became clear was her own nothingness. In nothing, there was beauty. In nothing, there was peace. In nothing, there was s̵a̸l̴v̸a̶t̵i̴o̷n̶--
The call of match start snapped her back to reality. Her hands were shaking as she finally took hold of her weapon, and it was all she could do to try and focus on the person standing on the other side of the arena. She nodded towards him, clearly distracted. "Um... Good luck!" It was all she could think to say.

Telrenya sat up in bed. Light shone past the sheer curtains of her inn room and she rubbed at her eyes in an attempt to will the sleepiness away and clear the lingering fog in her brain. Her plans for today were already decided, so staying in bed just wouldn't do. With a yawn, she pulled her legs over the side of the soft white sheets and pushed herself up to her feet.
Taft was as bright and quaint as always. The sun was out to greet her, peeking up over the tall clocktower that stood on the far side of the city as it brought the morning with it. Her typical 'adventuring' attire sat tucked away in her inventory. Had she not been dressed in a relatively modern fashion, she might have blended in among the NPCs that went about their days on this peaceful European-style floor. Today wasn't for fighting or exploring or gathering loot. No, Telrenya carried herself with purpose as she smiled and called pleasantries over her shoulder to the shopkeeper. Her arms carried more than one arrangement of flowers and she pushed the door open with her elbow as she continued to the teleport gate.
The air shifted when she had reached her destination. Entering through the large archway and making her way down the long empty tunnel on the first floor, the sounds from the bright, lively city behind her seemed stifled. A stillness took over. Her footsteps echoed across the smooth, polished marble and soon she could make out the light that shone through the many curved windows, casting a calm blue light across the interior chamber where the monument stood. But that wasn't all. Another sound reached her ears. The soft tones of plucked strings called sweetly, sorrowfully, from the room ahead. She wondered briefly if a recording crystal might have been left at the altar, but as she crossed the threshold to the large room she was quickly corrected by the sight of a man playing the tune. A gentle smile rested on her lips while she paused to listen. The last note carried through the air, and she waited another moment in the silence.
"That was a beautiful song." She said softly. Telrenya continued her path, her steps once again creating noise that disrupted the still air, and she approached the monument. She gazed at the long, long list of names and her practiced eyes fell onto one with ease. She took her time, standing there in silence with her arms wrapped around the small bouquets she had brought with her, perhaps lost in her thoughts.

With the both of them spent, the stagnant air hanging all around them, Telrenya had to fight not to put too much weight onto her weapon. The hectic back-and-forth was over and she was grateful for a chance to rest. She met Jomei's eyes beneath her, the glaring sun behind her casting her shadow over him where he lay, and his smile was infectious. In that moment, her soul stirred and her chest swelled. For the first time in a long while, she was proud of herself. Though his eyes were closed, her smile stretched wide with excitement.
'You think so?!'
She hadn't gotten the words out before that 'but' reached her ears. She froze, completely caught off guard by his ability to break out of her sword's paralytic effect. By the time her mind had caught up and was yelling at her to yank her rapier back to her side, Jomei's grasp had locked her in place. Her expression fell into a hard wince as a dull buzzing sensation stabbed through her abdomen. The last of her health bar emptied. The duel was over.
Her eyes, which had locked onto his weapon, trailed back up to his face. She could feel herself slipping. The edges of her vision began to blur. Telrenya let out a short laugh, weak and shaky. "No holding back." She echoed. "You got me. I--" Cardinal wouldn't allow her some grandiose speech. With her bar depleted, it bid her to sleep, and Telrenya's strength left her completely as her body went limp.
Jomei wins
-
After so long spent running and tumbling under the sweltering desert sun, sweat was running down Telrenya's brow. She could feel the cloth sticking to her back. Her legs felt heavy. "I learned from the best!" She quipped with a smile.
When the light reflected off the large silver coin between his fingers, Telrenya's expression fell with a quick reminder of the dismay she'd felt after her own failed flip of the coin. That feeling doubled down when Jomei was blessed by the luck of their hosts for the second time this match. She let out a defeated sigh, then readied herself when he once again took up arms.
It was all she could do to avoid the empowered bite of his weapon. She played on the defensive for as long as it took for that coin to wear off, and her muscles began to burn because of it. She felt the presence of the curved arena wall coming up at her back and she knew she couldn't keep this up much longer. Her eyes scoured for an opening. Jomei was skilled. Practiced. Without the help of items to reduce his speed, landing a hit would be an uphill battle.
'There!'
It was like cracking the case of a nail-biting mystery. She dropped her center to dodge a horizontal swing, and in one swift motion she extended her leg and swept it around with all her might, kicking up sand before connecting with Jomei's ankles. She sprung back to her full height and her rapier glowed brightly. A single stab down to the center of his chest, and her new weapon's paralytic properties would ripple through his avatar, followed closely by a piercing wave of additional damage. Telrenya panted where she stood, still with a firm grip on the handle. Exhaustion threatened to take hold of her. "I...decided to change some things up...recently." She affirmed between heavy breaths.

A strong tug at her arm. Her weight being pulled forward. Suddenly the world spun and Telrenya's back crashed into the sand, leaving Jomei in between herself and the small explosion of another trap. Her hands flew back to catch her and she stared up at her savior in wide-eyed disbelief. Practically shrugging off the damage he'd just suffered by rescuing her, his prop comedy broke her out of her stupor. A genuine laugh bubbled up from her chest. "Well now I regret leaving my teacup at home." She joked back. A quick bit of swordplay and a lot of her health disappearing confirmed that the fight was very much still on. Telrenya's jaw dropped at the sheer audacity, but her lips quickly met again in a smirk that might rival his signature.
"Always." She answered. Her eyes betrayed her next move, flickering downward right before she pulled her leg back and launched a straight kick to his abdomen. If nothing else, she needed space to get back to her feet. A quick spin and another flourish of her rapier and Telrenya was back in the fight. "But alas," She called to her opponent, raising her free hand to press the back against her forehead in a bit of theatrics, both for the crowd and herself. "I'm afraid I may not be long for this world." Truly, she was littered with red gashes and simulated stab wounds. If Jomei landed one more hit, that would be the match. There was no healing out of it anymore. "And so, I will fight 'till my dying breath!"
Their battle continued in earnest. She ran forward, light on her feet lest the shifting sands slow her down. An explosion--this one born of crashing metal--erupted between them. Each deflection, every parry rang out through the thick, arid air that hung over the arena. Telrenya fought for each swipe and stab that she could land on Jomei's nimble form, and tried just as hard to keep herself out of his blade's path.

Pulled back into the moment by force, Telrenya's eyes widened as the weapon was launched from her grasp with a sharp ringing of metal. The simple silver blade stabbed weakly into the ground a few feet beside her, sagging under the weight of its own guard in the loose sand. Her attention pulled from the rapier back to her opponent across from her as Telrenya felt her limbs lock up, frozen in her fighting stance. Her body twitched under the familiar, uncomfortable effect of being Stunned, and her face finally reflected a sense of frustration at having been caught by such an attack. Not to mention the dull, throbbing sensation that came from how rapidly her health bar was dropping.
Jomei's words gave her pause, though. She wasn't sure how to take his offer, nor his observation. It was too much to think about all at once. Her lips pressed together again, this time in an uneven uncertainty. They'd part to muster him an answer. "I..." She expelled a single breathy chuckle, as if to laugh at the absurdity of the situation. "To be honest, I was hoping we could talk over tea or something first." Sincerity settled back into her chest as she continued, "I have been wanting to talk... It's been too long, and... I've been thinking about some really tough things lately." She tried to pick her words carefully, grasping for a way to express herself while keeping things brief. A bittersweet smile began to tug at her lips. "I guess dueling you like this is even harder than I thought, not knowing how you feel or anything."
The fingers of her left hand twitched. Her thoughts shifted from those sentimental admissions to a command. One that Cardinal would have to allow her. "But I made a promise to myself. Even though the stakes aren't exactly all that dire... I'd feel really crummy if I let myself down already!" With that exclamation, Telrenya squeezed her hand tightly around the dull grey crystal that had appeared in her palm, shattering it and freeing herself from the system's iron grasp. She reached out with all haste to retrieve her rapier and back-pedaled to a safe distance. The same hand that had activated the Antidote Crystal glowed with a soft yellow aura and she brought it close to her chest to heal back some of the damage dealt. While the fleeting thought of going for an attack had crossed her mind, she hadn't intended to seem underhanded. But more importantly, one more hit like that was likely to put her out of the fight, and Telrenya was done with gambling.
Yet the universe--or maybe just Aincrad--wasn't done gambling with her. Just as she felt her health inch back upwards like a refreshing breeze under the stiff desert sun, another step backwards and her footing faltered. There was something there. "No--!" She realized too late as the sound of trap trigger reached her ears. Telrenya wrenched her eyes shut and crossed both arms in front of her, bracing for the worst.

She felt awful standing up. The alcohol had yet to fully run its course, and she wanted nothing more than to just lay down in a comfortable bed and try to sleep. She surely wouldn't find any such accommodations on this floor. "You live near Taft, right?" The pair of them carefully navigated the broken furniture littering the ground on the way back to the front door. Upon pushing it open, they were greeted with the angular rainfall of the constantly dreary weather. "There's an inn halfway between the teleport gate and the east side of town. If it's not out of the way, could I ask you to help me get there?" Her smile was largely made up of embarrassment. If she looked half as bad as she felt, the two of them would make quite a pitiable sight: a couple of drenched, disheveled players, halfway hungover trudging through the quaint European cityscape in the middle of the afternoon. And neither of them were missing a single health point. What a day.

Jomei's displeasure at her unorthodox 'attack' was written all over his face. A little nugget of regret nestled in her throat while she chided herself, 'That was too much, wasn't it? Of course it was!'
"S-sorry!" She called with a hint of pink on her cheeks. His counterattack was fierce, and thankfully the bear trap shattered when she pulled her leg back in a hurry to avoid it. Her rapier let out an audible 'thwip' as it cut through the hot air to meet his and she continued her retreat, taking a moment of reprieve with a few feet lingering in between them. The fighting spirit Jomei had lured out of her was regressing. That nervous energy squeezed at her shoulders. The memory of their start-of-battle challenges crumbled as she just kept repeating to herself that she didn't want to be here. She wanted to talk, not fight. When did she ever want to fight?
Telrenya moved forward, slower now. Maybe she was just wary of setting off another trap. If she didn't try to take advantage of the debuff, then the item she bought would be a total waste, right? The tip of her sword began to glow with a light that spread down the length of the metal like a sheath. She lunged forward, letting loose the same sword art she'd relied on dozens of times so far in this tournament. It let her down just the same. Nothing more than glancing blows, dodged and deflected despite Jomei's impaired reaction time. She recalled one of many sparring sessions in his backyard and how formidable a duelist he'd always been. She wondered just how long he'd carried that title. She didn't think she'd ever asked him exactly how he got it.
Telrenya was quiet while they met blow for blow, trapped in her own head. They were on a more level playing field thanks to the tournament's duel restrictions, but it felt like she was only just keeping up with him. If that frustrated her, it wasn't clear on her face. There was something else. Maybe that was why Minako had stuck her with that embarrassing title during her introductions. Telrenya just looked...troubled.

Her offense turned to defense with a flip of THE coin, and so when Jomei shot forward to attack she was on high alert. They were both rapier users--always had been--and she knew well how easily the thin blades could slip right past one's guard.
But before Jomei could fully close the gap and take a stab or twelve at her, something happened. He had taken damage, but not from her sword. Telrenya winced when she spotted the crude spikes stabbing up at him and another chill ran through her. She couldn't forget about the traps. 'Lucky I haven't stepped on something already...' She thought. Jomei's body turned to avoid the worst of the spears and at that moment she flinched with the instinct to strike. A snap decision carried her forward, but the metal of her blade didn't glow like she's previously planned. Instead she reached back into that same pouch while meeting his advance.
Twilight Turmoil met Fragarach with a sharp ringing of metal as their blades slid across one another. Telrenya dashed past Jomei, leaving room for only a single collision before she turned back to him and spun her wrist into a quick flourish. 'I just need a small opening.' The fingers of her opposite hand curled tightly around a small glass vial. When she'd brought the same item to her first match, she'd regretted not using it against Yue Hua early on. So, she didn't linger on the opposite side of her opponent before dashing back across the sandy arena. If she could just get close for a second or two without getting hit...
With the step that brought her right before him, her foot sank farther down into the sand than she'd anticipated. It threw her off of that delicate momentum and she lurched forward slightly. A loud 'SNAP' sounded at the ground beneath them, and electricity shot up Telrenya's body as the tingling sensation in her leg rushed to her brain. The teeth of a bear trap dug into her calf, piercing right past the cloth of her tall white boots. Her attention was split, having to look down at what it was that had just torn into her. Just as quickly, her neck tilted back up to put her eyes back on her opponent. For a brief moment, Telrenya's expression was not unlike that of a rabbit just before the slaughter.
Then a resolve showed itself. Her eyes shone with determination and her lips pursed into a hard line. She did the only thing she could think of. Her posture straightened completely and her heels lifted off the ground. Reaching up as high as she could, she raised her hand still clutching the bottle of pheromones and slammed it down on the top of Jomei's head. The glass shattered and released the liquid inside to dampen his hair.

Another flinch. Another wince. Telrenya felt helpless, a thick cloud of dismay hanging over her eyes as she was left to watch her efforts slowly but surely scrubbed away. NIGHT’s health bar just kept ticking back upwards. The bleed from her weapon couldn’t even keep up with her opponent’s self-healing. She couldn’t land another hit to save her life. This was the exact scenario she had been trying to avoid.
To make matters worse, her own health was degrading at a rapid pace. She had hoped, in this lion’s den, that if she simply threw herself at the strongest opponent she might steal some footing. Knock them off balance. If Lessa was their side’s king, as she had apparently decided, then she would be the bravest pawn there ever was.
But it wasn’t working. Instead of climbing the mountain, she was slipping and clawing for handholds that were invisible. Her fingertips scraped against a featureless surface and she felt gravity take hold of her for what might be the last time.
Then came a lifeline.
Telrenya froze as though she felt the rope around her waist snap taught to catch her. Health in the red, heartbeat pounding in her ears, she looked to Lessa like a deer in the headlights and she smiled. A warm smile that spilled every drop of gratitude and respect that she didn’t know had welled up inside of her. She had been nervous for this fight. Nervous to meet Lessa. Nervous to follow-through on attending this whole tournament. She still didn’t know her partner very well, but she knew that she was kind.
”Thank you.” Telrenya was surprised at her own reaction, but it didn’t show easily. ”That actually means a lot to me.” She admitted with lightly-burning cheeks. Had she been yearning for validation? The thought nearly made her squirm with embarrassment.

"O-oh, no, you're right, I've never done anything like this before!" A breathy laugh escaped her, and she brought her free hand up in front of her to wave off the thought. "I just thought it might..." She struggled to explain herself. The noise of the crowd carried on the hot wind made it hard to focus on such small talk. So, she shook her head. "I was surprised to see you here, too." She simply punctuated the thought with a small smile. Despite everything, it felt so easy to talk to him in this moment. What a relief.
His challenge stirred something in her. Where pieces of her anxious self had sloughed off and melted with the warmth of their short greetings, the impending clash of blades chipped away even more. She matched his salute, a gesture she'd learned from him back when they would train together, but before she would drop her stance and prepare to go on the offensive, she reached into a pouch at her belt. She'd almost forgotten. Her fingertips brushed over polished metal and she pulled out a single coin that glinted in the abundance of sunlight overhead. Telrenya wasn't typically a gambler, but with only one token left after her other purchases... She let out a steady breath and tucked her thumb underneath her forefinger. With a solid ringing sound, it launched into the air. "Heads." The word was little more than a whisper. She didn't take her eyes off the coin, so that when it fell back down she was able to snatch it out of the air. She held her breath and uncurled her fingers...
Yet it was the elegant profile of Kindling resting on her open palm. The color drained from her face and the sweat on her temple went cold as she froze up in unreasonable disbelief. The coin began to let off soft blue sparkles around it before it shattered, its usefulness expended. Likewise, the air around Jomei briefly danced with matching little sparks of light as he was imbued with THE Coin's power instead of her. She froze up. Gambling was a dumb idea. One successful counterattack from Jomei and she'd be put in a really bad spot. She had been prepared to make the first move, but now...
She straightened up. The fingers of her open hand curled into a fist and she put her focus back onto her opponent. She regained her fighting stance and moved one foot across the other while keeping her guard up. "I'll give you a head start!" She called across the commotion of the spectators. Her tone betrayed her; the blunder was obvious. Still, she wore something of a playful smirk to go along with her banter. "The same goes for you. Don't hold back, okay?"

The satisfaction of landing a hit against NIGHT was fleeting as the sting of retaliation was quick to bite at her collarbone. That exposed bit of her chest took on a thick red gash that pulsed with fire. The discomfort left Telreyna wincing as the two separated and she focused on keeping her feet steady underneath her.
Lessa’s timing was impeccable. The encouragement she offered washed over her like disinfectant on a fresh cut: it stung at first, but that little squeeze of her shoulder was the band-aid that sealed everything back up. Then came the doting. Telrenya’s cheeks dusted with a fresh pink while the woman several levels her senior pulled out a familiar-looking plush teddy bear and handed it to her. She opened her mouth, about to exclaim how she’d gotten the same one, but a nagging in the back of her head kept her quiet. Instead she awkwardly accepted the gift with one hand, slack-jawed, before forcing out a laugh that was absolutely coated with embarrassment. ”O-oh! Right, thank you!” Her eyes fell on the stuffed toy. It was pretty cute.
But that nag hadn’t gone away, and it was telling her that every second she wasn’t chipping away at NIGHT’s health bar was time she had to heal back all of that hard work. Telrenya stiffened her bottom lip, tightened the grip on her rapier, and left Lessa’s side with a determined nod.

A new arrangement of flowers sat atop an artisan's front counter in a simple vase of baby blue. They shifted slightly as Telrenya's fingers gently prodded and pinched at a stem here and there. Having given in to a bit of fidgeting, the shop's owner fussed over the immortal blooms for a few more seconds before tearing herself away from the meaningless task. "I suppose I ought to get breakfast soon." The acceptable window of time for 'breakfast' was rapidly closing, after all. And while she wasn't yet feeling that dull, nagging buzz in the pit of her stomach when Cardinal was reminding her to eat something, it was only a matter of time. So, reaching up for a quick stretch, she decided she was better off closing up for now and finding something more fulfilling to do with her day.
She had just locked the door and set the 'away' message for her shop when the familiar chime of message tickled her ears. Instantly filled with curiosity, she stopped to read. The author surprised her, but only a little. Then the body of the message surprised her. A field boss? She wasn't sure if she'd taken on one of those before. But wait. She scrolled back up to the message's recipients and was surprised for a third time. Yue Hua's username was also listed. Recent memories filled her mind, replaying the last words they had spoken to each other after their duel had been called to end. A smile played on her lips.
A quick, simple reply would confirm her attendance. Or, at least as quick and simple as Telrenya could get. An acceptance of the invitation, of course. And she had to thank Kindling for asking her in the first place. Oh, and it would be rude not to address Yue Hua, since she was replying to both recipients, right? She re-read the instructions in his message and re-registered his intent to take off in just a few minutes. With a sudden sense of urgency, she tapped the 'Send' button on her reply and set off for the teleport gate. "Scalabis, Scalabis..." She repeated the settlement name under her breath a couple of times, only to realize she wasn't sure which floor it was on. A cold sweat beaded on her brow, but she would persevere.
Several minutes later, Telrenya appeared on the 24th floor, stepping down from the teleport gate and letting out a heavy sigh of relief. She'd made it as quickly as she could, choosing to rely on asking a handful of strangers for directions rather than send an embarrassing follow-up message to her soon-to-be party members. Another quick stop to ask for the way to the docks, and she'd be jogging over to find the familiar red hair of the spear user. She slowed her pace to a brisk stride as she drew closer and brought her hand up in a wave. "Hello! Good to see you in between all of the...fanfare." She hadn't prepared the right word, and so a pause found its way into her thoughts.

She knew this match would come since the first week of the tournament. The moment she’d seen the list of combatants and found Jomei’s name among them. The way that the brackets had been explained to her meant that they would face each other eventually, and now that she stood here, approaching the arena with her name called out over the stands, all she could think about was how much she wished she could have been doing this differently. Anxiety gripped her as tightly as her fingers clenched the white cloth hanging down at her sides. Things had been hard the last couple of months. This competition was supposed to be her attempt at crawling back out from her shell, of inserting herself back into the world that had kept on turning.
Minako’s voice boomed to start the match and Telrenya snapped to attention, hastily reaching for the weapon that she hadn’t yet drawn from its scabbard. Her eyes fell back on Jomei. All she could manage was the most sheepish smile. Every other greeting felt silly as she recited them in her head. Still, her silence was strangling her. ”It’s nice to see you.” Painfully true. Uncertainty plagued her mind while she searched his face, his posture, looking for something. Trying to gauge how she looked in his eyes.
Whatever she found, the fight was imminent. The crowd couldn’t be kept waiting, after all.

Electricity shot through the joint of her wrist. Her rapier clattered to the ground, but thanks to their earlier dinner, Telrenya was spared a completely stunning blow. Her jaw could only clench at the thought. 'Used up already...!' Her inner monologue rang with disappointment and she hurried to retrieve her weapon without leaving herself wide open for another attack. Lessa moved closer and offered some kind words which did well to pull herself out of that knee-jerk reaction to self-criticize.
She turned her wrist and her rapier arced wide beside her. She drew in a breath, taking a moment to collect herself. "Right!" She replied, her voice resolute. She looked back to NIGHT, locking eyes as if confirming to her opponent that she was still her target. She'd gotten a taste of NIGHT's defenses. Now she just had to break past them. If she could do that--if she could just weaken NIGHT, or even just keep her attention--she trusted in Lessa to handle the rest.
That was a bit mean, wasn't it? She would have to apologize to her partner for being reckless after the match. Or during that horse riding lesson. Probably both.
So, she would try again. NIGHT was as dodgy as they came, and what she lacked in mitigation she made up for in self-healing. The only thing she knew about the woman, aside from her name, was that the only way to take her out would be to land hit after hit. Outpace her regeneration, somehow, before her own health was depleted. Several seconds ticked by filled with parries, dodges, close calls, and near-misses. Then, Telrenya spotted it. A so-called crack in the armor. NIGHT recovered from parry, but the rapier moved just fast enough. The thin metal of Telrenya's blade scraped against the length of NIGHT's sword and a forward lunge brought the tip straight through her chest with a solid 'STAB'.

She didn't like this anymore. Her head felt scrambled and it was hard to concentrate on anything. All she could focus on was her tear-blurred vision and the shape of Ryo planting himself on the floor across from her. A small hiccup worked its way into her silent sobs and she listened to what he had to say. The instinct to argue with him bubbled in her chest. To tell him that he was wrong, that he doesn't know what happened, or what she was going through. He didn't know about their fights. He didn't know how she struggled with reality in every sense of the word the past few...how long had it been? Weeks? Months? How long had it been?
She held her tongue and wiped her dirty, wet hands on her white clothing as she pulled her knees in closer to her. Ryo was trying to help, and it would be rude of her not to listen to his advice. "A quest?" She echoed quietly. She was skeptical, but also confused. What on earth could a quest do to help? She slowly wrapped her arms around her legs folded in front of her. "I just... I miss everyone so much. Kimi, and Hestia, and Spencer, and--" Her lip quivered. Tears just kept pouring down her cheeks. "--and Jomei. And Ruby. And James." Her grief for the loved ones who had grown apart began to intermingle with her grief for the deceased. She wanted nothing more than for things to be like they were before. Her heart ached for it. Why had they changed at all?
Some time passed, and her emotions ran their course. Her tears had run out. With a clear redness in her cheeks and beneath her eyes, Telrenya spoke up quietly again. "Thank you for listening to me." She was embarrassed. This wasn't the kind of friendly conversation she had intended for when she sat down over those drinks. Her eyes shyly drifted up to meet Ryo's, to look at his face, to gauge his reaction to the disheveled human sitting across from him. She let out a small sigh. "I'm still glad we got to meet again. For a while I wondered if I was ever going to see any of my friends again." A tiny, wry smile creeped upon her lips. There was no laughing off that somber thought. After all, she only had herself to blame. Instead, she took a little solace in the thoughts that followed. "Even though this floor is really, really creepy, and I drank way, way too much, and made you listen to me cry so much," Her fingers fidgeted in front of her shins with that lingering embarrassment and her eyes shifted away, "thanks for helping me."
