  1. A simple round table stood dressed in a pristine white cloth, adorned with a pink vase holding an arrangement of roses and baby's breath. The glow of a soft yellow candle provided an ambiance that truly set a romantic mood, the presentation spot-on for a dinner date for two. Two comfortable padded chairs stood opposite each other, with rolled silverware resting in front of each. In the center of the small table sat two entrees: a single plate with a generous serving of spaghetti and meatballs, and a wooden tray with an assortment of high-quality sushi. An interesting dinner pairing. Telre
  2. She pulled herself up, shakily at first, bracing herself against the bannister. She felt so drained: her muscles ached and her head was cloudy. She lifted one leg over the railing, then the other, gripping onto it tightly while she planted her heels onto the bit of ledge on the other side. She faced the town proper and spotted the glint of metal off in the distance where Celestial Dawn lay among the cobblestones. She grasped firmly onto the metal railing and steeled herself. This moment wasn’t about what she wanted. To confront this demon meant to set her feelings aside. It meant doing what wa
  3. Ah. Telrenya’s shoulders heaved with a shaky gasp, choking through another wave of raw emotion. Her hands fell from the railing and balled into fists in her lap. It was beginning to make sense. The puzzle pieces she had been grasping for were taking shape between her fingers and starting to fit together, but to what end? She hated this so much it made her throat burn. She didn’t want to do this anymore. She wished to be out of here, she wished to be safe, and to be warm, and to be at peace, and to be home. Where was home? Revelations hit her one after another, square in the ches
  4. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ She was met with a flood of nightmares against an inky blue sky. A chilled wind tousled her hair and clothes. Large cloaked figures practically overlapped as they billowed through the cityscape with deadly scythes raised high and poised to strike. A dozen reapers patrolling the streets, cutting down anything that dared to breathe. ’Why?’ Why did she forget? She felt a heat on her cheeks and reached up to feel the wetness on her skin. When did she start crying? She felt her chest burn with a rigid tightness and her bottom lip quivered with a wave of anguish that flooded up f
  5. She was alone. Except for her destructive entrance, the entryway she found herself in was plain and clean. And then she recognized it. This was Jomei’s house. Complex emotions tangled in the pit of her stomach and she looked back towards the door. Why here? Was there still danger outside? Was she really alone? ’Please don’t show me him…’ She thought weakly. Even if these were all just some sort of complicated dreams, she couldn’t face Jomei. Not yet. She pulled herself to her feet and held a hand in front of her chest. Despite that looming apprehension, that uncertainty, she felt a small
  6. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ Of course it didn’t–or wouldn’t–answer her. It silently turned away from her as another distant voice yelled against the silence. Then another. Another scream. A cry for help. Telrenya opened her mouth again to speak, but the cloak flew off. ”Wait!” She shakily but hurriedly pushed herself to her feet. She ran to follow, to try to figure out what was going on. She witnessed another person running out into the main square as she came upon it, with a different, identical scythe-bearing cloak following after them. It closed the gap quickly and struck them down in a single blow. Tel

  8. "Can't say I've ever made something quite like this before..." Telrenya mumbled to herself after she looked over the order form Kindling had left for her. Truthfully, the only item she'd crafted before that wasn't a piece of jewelry was that magnifying glass Ryo had commissioned her for. So this shouldn't be too hard, either, she assured herself! Granted, it took a couple of tries. She was a bit rusty, so she ended up wasting a bit of material while she eased back into the process. A stroke of luck blessed her just as quickly, and she was left with a perfect-quality craft in just minutes.
  9. Telrenya flinched when a figure appeared in between them. It gave her pause where she had been ready to activate another sword art. The glow faded from her blade before it had fully come to life and she blinked, Kindling's imposing frame coming into focus. The single word boomed across the arena and Telrenya froze, her expression softly contorting into betrayal. That was the end? It was over? Her eyes flickered past Kindling to Yue Hua. Her bottom lip stiffened and she caught her composure. Something compelled her to repress the shock and the disappointment. It felt unsightly in front of her o
  10. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ Going from one void of complete darkness to another of complete light was not as jarring as she would have thought. She blinked heavily for just a moment, but her eyes had no issue adjusting to her surroundings. Telrenya’s shoulders sagged. She wanted to rest. Just how many more challenges awaited her? ”Two remain.” As if responding to her jumbled thoughts, the unexpected voice of the shape caused her to jump. She exhaled a sigh. It was pointing again, past her, to what was inevitably another door. She almost turned to look at what was next in store for her, but instea
  11. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ The fight began. Telrenya made the first move, lunging forward and attempting a quick jab. Her shot went wide, as the threat of The Mask’s own stabbing blade caused her to twist her shoulders and dodge to the side. Her own rapier tip caught the air beside the same dodging motion. They clashed, their swords emitting pixelated sparks as they slammed into and scraped against each other. Every mirrored motion and perfectly-timed movement left Telrenya grinding her teeth. Another clash. Another parry. She refused to give an inch of ground, and so her double did the same. It didn’t ta
  12. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ When it swung shut behind her, Telrenya was left in complete darkness. Or perhaps the word ‘void’ was more fitting. A space of complete nothingness. She could see–or at least she thought so–as she flipped her clearly visible hands front to back in front of her. She briefly wondered if she was cursed to wander indefinitely in this empty space just like the staircase from before, but when she turned around to take a look behind her, that thought escaped her as she froze. Regret. That deep pit in the stomach sitting hard and heavy. The truth that things can’t be changed, undon
  13. Two hours later... "And then! And then! I tried to equip it like an item!" Telrenya was fighting laughter as she recounted one of the seemingly funniest stories she'd ever told. "But it doesn't have an equip option, so I just immediately used it by mistake! Ohhh my goodness, I thought Hestia was going to throw me off the side of Aincrad." Her hand slapped down on the bar counter, jostling their glasses. Each had been refilled several times over by now. Telrenya clutched her stomach with her other hand, recovering from a bought of laughter. "Wait wait!" She wiped a bead of tears from
  14. She didn't know Ryo well, but she was aware enough to notice that he was acting differently. The way he spoke had gotten messier. He seemed unfocused. Then he nearly fell over in his chair. Telrenya almost stood from her own seat to help somehow, but when she leaned over so quickly she felt that rush in her head and that dizziness struck her again. "Huh? What's wrong?" She caught his distress. Something was wrong. Why was she feeling like this? Had the tavern done something to them? Were ghosts going to pop out at them after all? 'No, no, no.' That was just silly. But as Telrenya wasn't d
  15. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ She was back in the place full of colored glass. It took her a moment to realize she had entered a new space, but one look back confirmed that the path behind her had disappeared. ”Vengeance, too, is subjective.” The voice of the dark shape snapped her to attention and she spun to lay eyes on it. ”Was it beautiful?” She wondered what kind of question that was, and a frown quickly took over her expression. ”I–” She stopped herself, and hesitated. Would she get anywhere by trying to get this person to explain themselves? Her eyes fell, and she stopped to think.
  16. Telrenya thrashed violently, but found no more resistance. She shot up from where she lay on a cold stonework floor and her head whipped around looking for the danger that had just engulfed her. Her hands, shaking in front of her, were free. She was panting, sweating, and shivering, but she was unharmed. ’That couldn’t have been a dream…’ She thought. But then where was she now? ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ She recognized this place. The massive room she found herself in was carved from smooth grey stone and held modest sconces of torchlight with the faintest tint of blue. Pillars with ornate carvings
  17. A plain stone staircase stood in front of her now, long and imposing and either side lined with tall metal bars affixed from floor to ceiling. Beyond the barred rails, a landscape. Too vague and distant to identify, but it clearly looked and felt like the outside from…wherever this was. Telrenya turned and looked back over her shoulder. The stairs continued downward behind her, with no sign of the massive doorway she had just walked through. She swallowed, the burning sensation of sorrow still fresh in her nose and throat. She hastily wiped at the corners of her eyes and down her cheeks, and b
  18. ✧♪✦⋆♫⋆✦♪✧ She strained and squinted against the bright light that now surrounded her, lashes fluttering in an attempt to fully open her eyes as she struggled to take in the blinding landscape. She flinched, bringing her hand up as a makeshift visor in order to make it bearable. Telrenya stood enveloped in a blank canvas of empty white. ”What is this place…?” She softly wondered aloud. She held a hand close to her chest, fingers gently curled as she took slow, careful steps forward. ’Tap, tap, tap, went the heels of her boots, echoing in the vague nothingness that surrounded her. A gl
  19. If there was anything the castle Aincrad could be praised for, it was the consistency of its landscapes. The sixth floor was just as difficult to traverse as always. Telrenya had been having a rough time wading through underbrush and either avoiding or cutting through all of the aggressive flora and fauna that lived here as she trudged ever eastward. Ryo hadn’t given her the most precise directions–how could he when the surrounding area could only be described as “more jungle”?--but after asking around in Krycim about the ‘Sage Waterfall’ that he had recounted to her, she felt decently sure th
  20. A stalemate. Is that what this had turned into? Each of their health bars sat just above the halfway mark, but it had felt like ages since either one of them had landed a meaningful blow. She wondered if every match of this weeks-long tournament would play out something like this. No... She'd seen the roster of players signed up to participate. Strangers, all but one. Unknown faces, but those names... The names she recognized, at least half of them. Some of the strongest players in Aincrad were taking part, she was aware of that. In a fight against those powerhouses, she'd be lucky to survive
  21. She expected Yue Hua to react to that sickly sweet scent, to stagger or stutter or otherwise throw the woman out of focus. Instead, she shook off the effect and faced her with a sword swirling with energy just waiting to swing at her. "Huh?" Telrenya blinked, taken aback for a moment. Why hadn't her item done anything? And then it clicked. She had used something earlier, hadn't she? When Yue Hua backed off after dousing her with the pheromones. Telrenya's shoulders went stiff and she sucked in air through visible, clenched teeth, a grimace on her face. 'She blocked it!!' Telrenya pulled h
  22. "Really!?" Tel perked up excitedly, trying to push away that fuzzy feeling pressing against the front of her skull. Plenty of people in SAO were from Japan, so it was unclear why she was so surprised. "I'm from Higashiyama in Kyoto." She smiled widely. "I've only been to Tokyo a couple times. That's so cool that you live in the big city!" She giggled again. Her cheeks were warm and everything seemed a little funnier. More enjoyable. This was the lightest her mood has been in a while. "Oh, I'm an art student." She answered plainly before delving into the topic. "I mean, I know you asked wh
  23. No longer burdened by the pheromones' debuff, Telrenya's Evasion rescued her from another devastating blow. For every time she forced Yue Hua's blade off course by blocking with her own, now she could move her body out of the way entirely. A strike pushed forward in the form of a straight lunge and Telrenya braced her knees with a firm bend before launching herself into a forward leap that would carry her not only over the blade, but her opponent as well. She was left with a choice. Both of their health bars had dwindled. The fight wouldn't last more than a couple of solid hits on either
  24. Their dance continued until her partner found an opening. No, she forced an opening. Air was pushed out of Telrenya's lungs and she stumbled backwards. She looked up. There was no stopping the force shooting after her--all she could do was tense her muscles to brace for the impact. A gasp escaped her. Her entire midsection tingled while the green color steadily drained from her health bar. Telrenya looked down at the bright red band of injury that stretched fully across her waist. Yue Hua may have well sliced her in half just then. Her hand rested over the pixelated wound and her chest he
  25. At the edge of her vision, she could tell her opponent was preparing an attack. Telrenya's body twitched as the system held her still, her chest rhythmically rising and falling to catch her breath. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing mentally where she could not physically. And then... She almost fell forward as Cardinal released its grasp on her. She planted a foot down to catch herself and spun around to regain her fighting stance. She had expected Yue Hua to lay into her while she could--what happened? She met the woman's pearly eyes and caught the pink hue burning on her face. Telreny
