  1. Hestia seemed offended by her previous statement on basing decisions on morals. Of course she was. The girl had chased after her, speaking quickly, and Rinne could sense that the tank was intent on changing her mind. Well, she didn't want to start a debate on beliefs, of all things, so she dropped the topic as abruptly as she had brought it up by staying silent instead of countering the other girl's argument.

They reached the area quickly, and the tense atmosphere waned. Hestia seemed to have forgiven her easily, though she felt that the righteous girl wouldn't let this attitude of Rinne's pass without attempting to 'fix' it. Upon reaching the area, she caught sight of one of the quest mobs, a Dark Elf. The two players went a little closer to get a better look. Exactly as advertised, the Dark Elf was...a normal elf, but it was wearing dark clothes and had a dark aura surrounding it. And it was carrying a bow on its back. Her eyes narrowed. How come they get to use bows? She turned to her quest partner. "Once I call to you, use <<Howl>> immediately, okay?" With all of that said, she gripped her spear in both hands and charged.

The mob looked up and saw her before she made her attack. This should still be good enough. She didn't slow down until she got close enough, planning to use her momentum to her advantage. Now directly in front of the Dark Elf that should still be too surprised to evade, Rinne lifted the heavy end of her spear, following through the sequence of her strongest Sword Art. But the elf proved itself to be nimble. Before she could even complete the sequence, it sidestepped, unsheathed a dagger (so the bow was just decorative), and slashed through her exposed back, taking off a huge chunk of her HP. Her eyes widened as she found herself unbalanced and with almost half the HP she had started with. Crap, stop panicking! Rinne blocked another one of the mob's attacks and aimed a kick at its chest, widening the distance between them momentarily. But she didn't have the Martial Arts skill, so it didn't do any damage and the elf was up and about to attack her again. Remembering the presence of her quest partner, she shifted her attention from the battle long enough to yell, "Hestia! Howl!"

  2. Not too far from the future blacksmith, Rinne leaned against a wall, doing last minute checks on her equipped items and attempting to form game plans for every possible scenario that might occur outside the safe zone. She wasn't very successful. There were just too many factors to consider, too many things she didn't know about the game. Her lack of physical skill in wielding spears (which means her first battle was going to be filled with many awkward, unnecessary movements even with the system assist), the number of players outside the safe zone at this time of day, the fighting style of the game's mobs and how to counter them, and of course, player killers.

She had to admit, leaving the starting city by herself daunted her a bit. Even though she considered herself quite a good gamer, the current situation was very different from all the other games she'd played. In normal games, if your character dies, it'll resurrect after a given amount of time. Your only penalty is loss of EXP and coins and maybe items, which can easily be regained after a few hours at most. In this game, she was the character and if she dies, that's it. Permadeath. So finding things out through trial-and-error was out of the question. The rumors floating around didn't help either.

"So, I've heard that player killers have started to invest in the Hiding skill," a nearby player whispered to her teammates. "And some of them are strong enough to one-shot a low-leveled player."

It made her want to rethink her previous stance of leaving by herself, even though she was just heading out to gather materials and fight a boar or two if she was feeling lucky. Maybe she should ask someone to team up with her? But whom to trust...? Pushing off against the wall and walking towards the town gates, Rinne tried to evaluate most of the players heading out. Many were in parties, the ones that went out solo looked like mid-levels, at minimum. Her cold, silvery-blue gaze passed a player grinning to himself as he looked past the gates, like a madman. I don't think I should be asking anyone to go with me. I don't know who would seem trustworthy enough, she decided firmly. She could be asking a PKer, for all she knew. In the end, going alone seems like the best choice. I suppose I should stay close to the town gates, just in case. Steeling her resolve, she left the safe zone in a steady, confident stride, passing the creepy man she had noticed earlier.

  3. Thankfully, she found another patch of <<Red Herbs>> not too far from where she previously gathered materials. It was significantly bigger than the previous patch, so she expected to get more materials out of it. The only disadvantage was that the patch wasn't located under the comfortable shade of the big tree. It was in the middle of a field with no other trees nearby, to be exact. She would be spending a long time underneath the heat of the morning sun. Well, I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Kneeling down in front of a small clump of herbs, she went straight to work, gently pulling the small plants from their grip on the soil and laying the plants down on the ground beside her. Once she had gotten enough, the materials shimmered as they disappeared into her inventory. Three down, two more to go.

  4. Rinne didn't expect the tank to have a whole speech prepared in response. Perhaps many people have asked Hestia the same question already, or she was simply good at expressing herself. Either way, the girl seemed very passionate about what she was doing, and was able to provide a logically valid argument. Less deaths mean that there's a higher possibility of having more people at the frontlines. "So, you're one of those people who make decisions based on morals," she said. It was a simple comment with no malicious intent, but people would often take offense on how she worded it and on the monotonous tone she used.

She didn't see a point in asking any more questions, so she spent the rest of the walk in silence, though she responded to most of the questions Hestia would ask her. They stopped briefly at the town exit to equip their weapons and armor. The blue-haired player gave her assault spear an experimental twirl and sheathed it. Then she opened her map once again, confirmed the location of the quest mob and pointed at an area within their line of vision. "The quest mob should spawn over there," she said, starting to walk in the direction of the area. She looked over her shoulder at Hestia. "You should be the one asking me this but, are you ready?"

  5. For a few seconds, her concentration unintentionally waned and she found herself pulling too hard on the thin-stemmed herb. The stem snapped and the 'material' she was holding shattered into pixels. "Oh, crap," Rinne hissed, snapping out of her thoughts. She quickly opened her inventory and checked the number of materials she was holding. Sure enough, there were only two <<Red Herbs>> inside. "Whyyy?" she groaned, dismissing her inventory. Then she looked around to see if there were any players who witnessed her failure. Failing to find materials wasn't very embarrassing, per se, but she hated making mistakes while being watched by others. Which  brings back a certain memory of--

That was the last of the herbs she had found in the patch. With a sigh of defeat, Rinne stood up and moved away from the comfortable shade of the big tree. Guess it's time to look for another patch...

  6. Rinne grimaced as she flicked a worm away and successfully uprooted another herb. She held it up for a few moments, admiring the detail the gamemaker had placed into even the smallest things. She could even see the veins on the herb's red leaves. It shimmered and disappeared as she placed it into her inventory. Hopefully, when she takes it out later, it would be free of dirt and worms.

Normally, she would be asking her classmates to do the dirty work for her, but none of them were present so she had to do it all by herself. But at the same time, she appreciated being completely alone. There were no other players around, no one to bother her, which enabled her to fully appreciate the game's audio and visual effects. Occasionally, the wind would blow through the leaves of the tree she was sitting under, and a few birds would chirp. I wonder how things would've gone if someone went with me, she thought. Most probably, she would be silently cursing them by now.

  7. Slay a Dark Elf, huh...? The door to the shop swung closed as Rinne stepped outside. She looked to her right and saw Hestia sitting in front of the building's small windows, and gently petting her familiar with a faraway look on her face. And from the looks of it, Kuro was enjoying his owner's gentle pats in his own lazy way. "Kayaba really went overboard with the game's AI," she spoke as she neared Hestia, abruptly bringing the other girl out of her thoughts. "I expected familiars to be soulless husks that follow their tamers and attack once commanded to. But...your familiar, Kuro, almost seems to have one. A personality, I mean."

She opened her menu interface and sent her quest companion a party invite. "I'm all done. The places where the Dark Elves could spawn are highlighted in my map." Rinne informed Hestia. "The nearest one's...maybe around a six minute walk away." She closed her menu interface once she noticed Hestia's name appear underneath hers. 380 HP...that's a huge difference from mine. Which once again brought her to the question of why Hestia even bothered to help low-levels when she could be soloing most of the quests in the higher floors. Rinne supposed she could ask her that later. "Let's go?"

She turned and started walking in the direction of the nearest town exit, expecting the other girl to follow her. And of course, she kept her distance from the familiar. As friendly as it may seem, it would take her a lot of convincing to even try and pet it. The walk started off quiet again, and she was expecting it to remain that way before she looked at Hestia briefly and recalled the question she wanted to ask. "Hey, Hestia," she began, walking a bit closer to the tank. The other player would then look up and see Rinne looking at her with her usual deadpan expression. Rinne maintained eye contact for a few seconds, before looking away, admiring the purple flowers adorning the sidewalks. "Why do you help low-levels? You would seriously benefit more from doing quests and facing mobs your level."

  8. The morning found Rinne wandering around the Town of Beginnings aimlessly, almost completely absorbed by the thoughts in her head. To be honest, she really should be doing something more productive, like going on that one beginner quest that didn't require for her to engage in combat or gathering more information about the higher floors and checking the player-ran shops' current prices, but she was feeling a bit out of it today. Put frankly, she lacked motivation. She'd been relentlessly doing productive things for the past few weeks, so taking a rest wouldn't hurt, right? It didn't help that the temperature was quite cool, the streets were quiet, and she was feeling a bit...sleepy...again.

But once the blue-haired player found herself in front of the town gates, she decided she had some other plans. She forcibly shook herself out of her sleepy state, and brought up her inventory. After tapping a certain item, a small yellow notebook appeared in her hands. She bit her lip as she flipped to a page she had bookmarked. Based on a few player shops' prices: 4 Mats on a weapon, 9 (or possibly none?) Mats on light armor, 7 Mats on a trinket. All Perfect quality. Brings us to a total of...20. Rinne took another glance at the town gates, at the visible area outside the safe zone. Earlier, she had refrained from leaving the safe zone because it was...well, dangerous. But today was different. She had gotten all too bored of staying inside town all day. Besides, many players told her time and time again. Mobs won't attack if you don't attack them first. That's what beginner zones are always like, after all. "Today you're going to be gathering some materials," she said to herself as she returned her notebook to her inventory and equipped her spear. Then, after one last glance at the Town of Beginnings, she walked past the town gates and outside the safe zone.

  9. "That sounds like a good plan," she responded, looking at the path straight ahead of her as they walked. "How about using <<Howl>> once I start taking damage? From the information I gathered about the quest mob, I can take one hit, I think. Two will land me in the red zone, and three would drop my HP to zero." And we all know what happens when HP drops down to zero. Rinne mentally shook the thought out of her head and continued walking. The blacksmith's shop was just a few more minutes away, and the two players decided to spend the time making small talk about the floor's environment and the mobs they could possibly encounter. They ran out of topics halfway through, and instead of attempting to start up another conversation, Rinne chose to remain silent.

Upon reaching the quest giver's shop, she gestured for Hestia and Kuro to stay outside. They would find more things to do out there while waiting. After three sharp knocks on the wooden door, the blue-haired player pushed the door open.

She was greeted by two NPCs. An old blacksmith with a sullen expression on his face and a woman, also dressed in blacksmith's garb, standing beside him. Unlike her husband(?) she looked at Rinne with a warm smile. "Are you here for a custom order?" asked the male NPC gruffly.

    "Uh--"

Before she could respond, the female NPC's scripted dialogue interrupted her. "My name is Hanna and this is my husband Griswold. We work as armorsmiths and we take orders for no price. However, if you wish to order for something, you would have to find the materials required to make it. Having said all of that, are you interested in placing an order?"

A pop-up message appeared in front of Rinne, prompting her to accept or decline the quest. She tapped accept and before the NPCs could ask her about her preferences, she said: "I'd like to order light armor. Long black coat with a light blue trim along the sleeves." She wasn't sure if they would make it according to the design she stated, but it was worth a try. "Now, where do I find these materials?"

(OOC: I literally had this typed out hours ago. But when I clicked 'post', my browser decided it was the perfect moment to crash. Maybe I should've saved my reply in a Word document first. ;-;)

  10. Rinne considered herself quite lucky. At her first search, she was able to find a small patch of red herbs planted beneath a big tree. It wasn't much, but it was a good start. She knelt down in front of the herbs, taking care that the edges of her black skirt didn't brush against the ground, and hesitated. Right, to gather herbs, I would have to touch the soil, something that many players have probably stepped on lots of times already, and as a result of that, it could have lots of bacteria... she squashed those thoughts before they could proceed any further. She was going to level up today, no matter what it takes. And did things such as germs apply to VRMMOs, anyway?

The blue-haired player gently uprooted the herbs from the soil. Zackariah didn't tell her which part she should get, so she decided to take the whole plant, along with the roots, for extra assurance. Some of the dirt clung to her fingers, and she found herself wishing she brought gloves. Dirty work had never been her thing.

  11. While making her way towards the gates, Rinne brought up the menu interface and opened her map. Sure enough, the recommended spots Zackariah the NPC was talking about were highlighted in red, a clear contrast against the map's grey background. Her gaze rested on one of the highlighted spots, the one nearest the town gates. "Maybe around four meters northwest," she mumbled to herself. She repeated the information in her mind once again before dismissing the map and quickening her pace.

Now that it was a bit later into the day, more players were outside. They weren't wearing any enhanced armor, instead choosing to stay in casual vanity wear, and the younger players quickly stepped out of the way as she passed by without her even prompting them to do so. Most of them were conversing with each other, exchanging the latest rumors about the frontliners, some casualties and conflicts in the higher floors, and the alleged new PK guild that was going around and eliminating high-level players. Same old news, she thought to herself with a sigh. There was always disorder up in the higher floors, for some reason. But then again, there's disorder in the lower floors too, she thought as she passed two low-leveled players who were arguing over a quest drop. Same old players repeating the same old gossips. Would they ever summon the resolve to go up to the higher floors instead of spending their days in pointless recreation? She quickened her pace even more. People have grown idle, believing that the frontliners would save them all. She wasn't going to be among them.

The player reached the town gates, absentmindedly nodded to the gate guards as they looked at her (probably checking if she was an orange player), and equipped her spear. She wasn't going to willfully engage in combat, no matter how much she wanted to, but she'll be ready if she would accidentally aggro a mob. As she walked, she entertained herself with her own thoughts while taking care to not walk too close to a mob (they wouldn't attack her, but they still made her a bit paranoid), and periodically checked her map to see if she was walking in the right direction.

Before she knew it, she found herself inside one of the recommended areas. She tugged her sleeves partway back up to her elbows and started looking for <<Red Herbs>>.

  12. People who treat others kindly, huh? Rinne wasn't sure if she met that criterion. As if it sensed her gaze, the black lion thing looked up at her lazily. For a few moments, she expected it to sense some sort of evil intent she didn't know she had and jump her in the middle of the plaza. But the familiar, Kuro, averted its gaze with a yawn and continued relaxing under the sun without paying much attention to her. Remember Rinne, even if it bites you, you won't feel any pain from it, she reminded herself. She gave the familiar another cautious look before shifting her focus to Hestia.

"That's good," she said. "Even though you're tanking, I wanted to deal most of the damage. So I could get a feel for the combat system and all that. It'll my first time engaging in combat, you see." Then she looked at Hestia in the eye, the other girl had round blue eyes that somehow looked warm despite the color, and almost smirked competitively. There was no way she was gonna be beat by armor enhancements. "Also, don't worry about the thorn damage. I have two accuracy enhancements on my weapon, so I'm pretty confident I can land a hit before it kills itself."

Having said all of that, she re-opened her map and tapped a few buttons on the map settings that allowed for only the unaccepted quest marker of <<Worn out Welcome>> to be shown on the map. She turned to Hestia and nodded. "Alright, I think we've spent enough time talking. Let's get to business." She then faced the direction of the quest marker and started walking, expecting Hestia to follow.

  13. Upon hearing her previous inquiry, the quest NPC looked up from the green chemical mixture that he was brewing and gave her a benevolent smile. (The stereotypical old white-haired mentor character with a long beard, thought Rinne as she gave the NPC a quick once-over). "Yes, I am Zackariah. Are you here for one of my lessons?" he asked her. All the while, a friendly smile remained on the NPC's face. It was starting to get a bit annoying. How could someone smile for so long, anyway? Don't their cheeks start to hurt or something? She was beginning to think that he was faking it. Oh wait...

A pop-up message appeared in front of the player, prompting her to accept or decline the quest. Rinne tapped accept and looked back up at the NPC impatiently. "Yes, I am. So how do I start?"

Zackariah, now following his scripted dialogue replied: "Start by collecting five <<Red Herbs>> from the fields outside the Town of Beginnings. You can learn more about non-combat gathering through the third section of the manual provided to you in your inventory. Additionally, the suggested spots to find <<Red Herbs>> have been marked on your map. Most of these places do not have any mobs in them, so you can avoid combat if you wish. Once you have all five materials, come back here and I will teach you the basics of crafting."

Rinne nodded, mentally repeating the information to herself a few times in order to remember it, and left the house with a curt "I'll be back later."

  14. Rinne gave the taller girl, who had just introduced herself as Hestia, a quick once-over. The dark-haired girl gave her the impression of a person who was never seen without a gentle smile and knew the quote "We are as strong as our weakest link," all too well. At first, she wasn't interested in taking up the other girl's offer, but once she heard the words 'level 19' and 'tank,' she reconsidered. To be honest, she wanted alone-time (as if she hadn't gotten enough of that already) instead of tagging along with a high-leveled player who really should be spending her time helping progress the clearers. Or leveling herself up so she could reach the clearers' levels. Both can work. The blue-haired girl almost let out a tired sigh. What a softhearted person. But she supposed the other girl could provide some extra insurance on her quest. Even with her skill and experience in MMORPGs such as this, she wasn't all too sure that she could face the quest mob by herself due to her low level. Besides, Hestia didn't look like she was in on this for EXP.

She dismissed the map and nodded to the other girl in acknowledgement. "My name's Rinne. Level 1, and aiming for a DPS build," she said in a tone that Hestia could only interpret as cold and clipped. She didn't have the same warm smile as Hestia did, but she tried her best to make herself look appreciative. The tank did offer to help her, after all. "Thanks for the offer. I was actually wondering if you could accompany me on a simple...Ah!" Her eyes had strayed down to the familiar standing at Hestia's side, and she couldn't help but let out a gasp of surprise. It was a black lion with white wings, the size of a big dog. Out of all the pets she could choose... She cautiously took a step back. I know I can't feel pain if it bites me, but it still looks a bit scary. She cleared her throat to hide her embarrassment. "I was actually wondering if you could accompany me on a simple beginner's quest called <<Worn out Welcome>>. You don't need to deal damage or anything, I just need you to take the hits while I attack the quest mob." At that point, she paused and looked at Hestia. "I mean, you have the <<Howl>> skill, right? Pretty sure most tanks do."

  15. "Teleport, Delilah."

For a few seconds, the first floor's teleport plaza seemed to fade into white. The noise also faded away into nothing, leaving her with a few moments of complete silence. Then it was quickly replaced by the unfamiliar environment of Floor 3's main settlement. Disoriented, Rinne stumbled away from the third floor's teleport gate, almost bumping into a few players, and blinked a few times in order to regain her bearings. Teleporting didn't bode well with her, especially since she frequently had motion sickness back in the real world.

Rinne made her way to nearby bench and sat down. The third floor's main settlement, Delilah, had a more homey feeling than the first floor's Town of Beginnings. Maybe it had something to do with the town being less cramped. The buildings, all of which were generally small in size and were fashioned like old medieval style houses, were placed a notable distance away from each other. Greenery decorated the sides of the roads (made out of cobblestone?), and different-colored flowering plants were abundant. Maybe, if I save up enough money, I could buy a settlement on this floor, thought the young woman with a small smile on her face.

She spent a few minutes watching a group of players standing next to the teleport gate pat each other's backs with wide grins on their faces, presumably because they finished some sort of dangerous quest, before stepping into the gate one by one. Only when the last player disappeared, did the female player remember why she came here in the first place. "Right, back to business," she mumbled to herself. She stood and brought up her map, her gaze resting on a certain unaccepted quest marker.

OOC: @Hestia, sorry it took so long!

  16. The first floor had always felt a bit depressing. Before the disappearance of the log-out button, before the VRMMORPG turned into a death game, and before everything else that came after it was a bright and happy place. Smiles everywhere. Players socializing with each other and starting to form parties. A small crowd forming around two players engaged in a duel in the plaza and cheering them on. Some players even approached her, despite her cold demeanor, and asked her to join their guild. Normally, she would have denied their offer and gone off to level up on her own, but almost without thinking, she tapped 'Accept'. Before everything, she felt almost...happy.

Her silvery blue eyes narrowed. But look at it now. People still smiled, but they cried even more often. Duels were bloodier, and rumors of safe-zone PKers killing people in their sleep via Full Loss Duels were widespread. The plaza she was passing through was deserted, aside from a small group of three players who were making up last-minute plans before going on a dangerous quest. The guild she had previously joined dissolved a few days after the death game announcement. Presumably because the guild leader, along with some valuable guild members, died while attempting a field boss that was too high-leveled for them. Not that she cared. They were fools for rushing things.

She stopped, briefly. In front of her was the very bench she had sat on when the friendly players had approached her and invited her to their guild. She closed her eyes. Breathed out. No use in reminiscing. It's over, and there's nothing I can do about it. Unlike them, she would take things slowly. She decided to avoid combat, even though her two-handed assault spear skill dealt a lot of damage. There was always the problem of her low HP and her lack of EVA and MIT stats. She spent the past few weeks gathering information on the various quests found in Floor 1. There were many newb-friendly quests, however most of them involved combat, and unless she would get herself a decent teammate, there was no way she was attempting that with such a low level. Which brings her...here. The young woman stopped in front of a small wooden house with circular windows and checked her map to see if she got the place right. Sure enough, the unaccepted quest marker lied in the house right in front of her. She tucked a few locks of blue hair behind her ear. "So do I just knock...?" But why was she worrying about pleasantries anyway? It was just an NPC. Shaking her head, she raised her hand, gave three sharp knocks to the door, and let herself in. "Hellooooo. Is Zackariah here?"

    History

Rhienne Livingston--or Rinne, as she prefers to be called--was born into a flawed, but wealthy family of five. Her mother is a successful entrepreneur, her stepfather frequently goes abroad due to the nature of his work, and her biological father is…nonexistent. Her three stepsiblings all study in schools located far away from her family’s beachside house in Florida, leaving her alone in the house with the maid and her busy mother.

Being less sociable than the average high school student, she sought other ways to entertain herself during her free time. Among those hobbies was playing computer games. She wasn’t picky about genres and mostly stuck to the mainstream, but she liked open-world games in particular.

When the development of the NerveGear and SAO was announced, she was elated. She attempted to sign up for the beta testing, but wasn’t able to get a spot. This, however, didn’t daunt the young gamer. She, along with a few of her classmates, lined up in front of the game store hours before the NerveGear was released. After a few hours of waiting in the rain, she happily took the train back home with a NerveGear and a copy of SAO carefully placed in her bag.

    Personality

    Virtues

Level-headed - Rinne prides herself on her ability to keep her cool in tense situations. She rarely panics, and often sets her fears and insecurities aside when making quick, rational decisions, even if her life is at stake. Maybe a part of her even enjoys the thrill of it, since she would always wear a confident smirk whenever she’s playing in high-risk, high-reward conditions.

Sincere - While true acts of kindness coming from Rinne are rare, bordering on nonexistent, their recipients can be assured that she really meant it and wanted to help in some way. She doesn’t like giving people false impressions, so it’s easy to tell if she’s helping them for her own benefit because she would say it straight out. She prefers telling the truth in every situation and if she would ever be forced to tell a lie, she would be overridden with guilt for days.

Adventurous - Rinne’s always liked discovering new things. She’s been a sucker for detail even before she started playing games. Whether it’s hidden areas, Easter eggs, or extra bosses, she’s always had the urge to comb through every inch of a game’s environment in hopes of finding something nobody’s ever noticed.

    Flaws

Emotionally Detached - Emotions are a weakness. They have the tendency to overwhelm people and cloud their ability to make rational decisions. Rinne’s had firsthand experience of what someone completely controlled by their emotions can do, and it wasn’t very pleasant. She’s not completely emotionless, per se, but she limits her ability to feel and distances herself from people.

Selfish - Self before others. Screw justice. Screw heroic virtues and kindness. They are hazardous, and being too nice is what leads people straight into bad situations. Rinne has gone through some tough times and she believes she was only able to survive because she started prioritizing herself and paying less attention to the well-being of others. Now that the possibility of dying is always present, her selfishness will grow even more prominent and will potentially serve as a problem for her future allies.

Sadistic - A part of Rinne that she hasn’t fully realized (and hopefully never will). She’s always felt a rush of pleasure whenever she inflicted pain on others, both in the virtual world and in the real world. Though she wouldn’t go out of her way to hurt someone, players who invoke her wrath will find her a little more cruel and a little more trigger-happy than the average person.
