  1. When it was almost noon, from where he was, Haltar saw a guy dressed like a cowboy coming from the road to the city, and as soon as he arrived he began to stop the neighboring villagers to ask them some questions. He must have come for his announcement, for sure. Haltar then moved from the wall where he was leaning to meet the guy. As soon as the cowboy noticed him, he asked him if he was... anything but his real name.
    "Yes, it's me, my name is Haltar, with sound H." he replied in a tone as flat as possible, trying to mask his disappointment. It sometimes happened that his name was mispelled, more often than he was willing to admit. Yet he couldn't understand why. Ok, it was a little weird, but it wasn't impossible to pronounce. He could have changed his name to a simpler one, but that was the name he always used when he was online, he was fond of it. He had therefore resigned himself to the fact that it would be constantly mispelled, even if it still bothered him.
    "You must have come for the announcement I left in the city, right? As promised, we will share all the loot in equal parts, is it good?" he said cordially, then offered his hand to the cowboy. "May I know your name?"

  2. While observing his opponent, Haltar had an idea about how he could fool him. It was a risky choice, but he could have caught it by surprise. He then tried to taunt the boar in order to attack him first.
    "Come on, you old pig! Aren't you fast enough to hit me? Come on, I'm right here!" he said opening his arms, as to appear helpless to him.
    The boar grunted angrily and answered charging the boy. This time, however, Haltar did not move. He stood where he was, taking the full blow. As the boar arrived below him, he lowered his saber downward, sinking it into the back of the boar. The animal screamed in pain and suddenly flinched, writhing, while the boy still stood where he was, watching him with a bold smile.
    "Eh eh, this time I got you. So, what are you going to do now? Do you want some more?"

    It was a quiet evening in the City of Beginnings. Haltar was having dinner in the tavern where he was staying, and as he was eating the steaming soup that had just been brought to him, he was thinking about his next moves to do to level up as fast as possible.
    <The wisest thing to do would surely be to complete all the missions that the inhabitants of the city can give me, so as not to get me in trouble...> he thought as he sipped his soup. Just thinking about it, though, let his desire to go out the next morning fade away. <It's too boring! At this rate, it'll take a lifetime! Isn't there a way a little faster?> He raised his eyes from his plate for a second, looking absently in front of him, until he focused on the bulletin board in front of him. When he realized he had the answer he was looking for in front of him, his brown eyes sparkled.
    <Of course, it's so simple! There will certainly be a more interesting mission on the bulletin board!> He immediately got up from the table, moving his chair noisily, to go check the bulletin board. Various announcements were present on it, from offers of exchange to real quests. One of them in particular caught his attention. <Hmm, this place is close, it's on Floor 1. It will probably be simple enough...> He had already picked up the paper and was about to take it off from the bulletin board when a thought blocked him.
    <Wait, stop! What am I doing!? This is not a game like the others, I can't be rash! My life is at stake.> Haltar immediately let go of the paper, staring at it. <However, sooner or later I'll have to risk my life, I can't stay in this city forever...>
    After thinking for a few minutes about what to do, he finally made a decision. First of all he sat down again, finishing his soup. Then he asked the innkeeper for a piece of parchment and a pen to write a new message. Once he finished writing it, he hung it next to the request he had seen, then went to sleep.

    I'm interested in completing this quest, I'm looking for other people to help me in the business. For those interested, you can find me at noon the day after tomorrow, in the village of Horunka, ask for Haltar. We will divide the loot into equal parts.

    Two days later.
    Haltar was leaning against the wall of one of the few buildings of the village of Horunka, observing the path he had traveled to get there, starting from the City of Beginnings. He hadn't taken much from there. It was still morning, but he had decided to go there to wait for any teammates who could arrive before the scheduled time for the appointment. If no one had arrived, he might have gone hunting in the forest around to see how strong the monsters were near there, before trying to complete the quest. He waited patiently, hoping someone would show up.

  4. Haltar dropped his sword on the beast, sure now that the shot would surely have hit the mark... and instead his target ran forward, leaving him to cut the air! That animal certainly knew his stuff! Was it possible that those gems had other powers, besides being useful for the job of Performer? No, that's not possible, there can't be an object that can empower monsters in this way. Especially a stupid boar like this! Yet that same boar seemed to make fun of him. In that moment he had turned back to him, rooting satisfied, and getting ready for another attack. Once again he threw himself forward, and once again Haltar merely stepped sideways, like a toreador. But the fight was not going at all as expected, at this rate he would stay there until evening. He stood for a few seconds to catch his breath, looking for a solution to get out of that situation.

  5. Continuing to go back and forth, Haltar tried to make some feints in order to disorient the wild boar, preparing for the attack. His opponent kept a safe distance, avoiding to get tired and staying out if his reach. Then, hoping to catch the boar off guard, Haltar tried a lunge jumping forward. His enemy jumped back to dodge, then he started forward again to counterattack, as he had done before. Haltar, however, expected such a move, and dodged by turning on himself and moving to the side, coming to the side of the boar, easily avoiding the attack and taking the advantage position.
    <Great! From this position you have no way out, now get ready to get hurt!> he thought triumphant, anticipating the moment when that shrewd boar would have been defeated and will release all the precious gems he had collected.

  6. Looking at him closely, the boar seemed to be a little old. His coat was a bit shaggy. He was studying Haltar moving sideways, waiting patiently for his move, as if he already knew how to move.
    Haltar tried to hit again, this time with a horizontal cut. The animal was quick to jump back to avoid the attack, and immediately returned forward trying to catch the boy off guard, but he managed to move sideways in time, finding himself with the rock behind him.
    The fight would be long. Haltar snorted, thinking of the effort he was making just to find some stones. <Hmm... This boar is too smart, I'm not going anywhere in this step. We try with a slightly different approach> he thought, and changed his guard position, turning a little to the side, keeping the left side forward, with which he held his saber. Then he started taking steps back and forth, humming, and getting ready for the next attack.

  7. Once he came down from the rock, Haltar tried to hide behind the bushes that grew nearby, to go around the boar and come up behind him. The boar seemed busy scratching the rock, not noticing the presence of Haltar.
    Just when he was almost there, however, Haltar put his foot on a twig that broke with a clear noise. The boar stopped abruptly and looked around to find the source of the noise.
    <Damn! Well, it doesn't make sense anymore to hide now. Attack!> Haltar stepped out of the bush behind which he stood, drawing his saber and loading it with his Sword Art, glowing green. The animal however, being a few meters away, had plenty of time to notice the boy and dodge to the side, then charge to counterattack, hitting Haltar on the leg.
    "Ouch! Ah, so that's it, prepare for payback then!" Haltar said, taking the blow.

  8. The goat they had just found seemed docile... but not very interested in being milked. Akiris had to follow her for some time before she could get the milk she needed. Fortunately, the goat did not try to escape, he simply let the girl do as he continued to graze the grass.
    When she had filled the milk bottle, Haltar applauded her while smiling at her. "Congratulations Akiris, you didn't took long at all, great job! Out of curiosity, do you have any pets at home? You were good at not frightening it."
    As he spoke, Haltar looked around to find their way back: they had strayed far from the city. Behind them, it could still be seen in the distance. It would not take long to return.
    "Well, now comes the hard part: coming back to the NPC to cook your dish. Are you ready for this or do you prefer to take it easy?" Haltar asked Akiris with a smirk, teasing her a little.

  9. "Thanks Hazado, see you soon!" Haltar said as soon as Hazado shook his hand. He followed him with his eyes as he walked away to return to the fields outside the city for a few seconds, then turned to go back to Zackariah's shop.
    <I am really happy to have met someone who could give me advice on what to do in this world right away. Surely we'll meet again.> He thought as he walked through the door of the store. He found the old man still behind the counter, setting up potions on the shelf.
    "Oh, look who's here!" Zackariah said turning to see who had entered. "How was the search?"
    "Well, it took a while... But in the end I did it." Haltar answered, smiling at the shopkeeper.
    "Hmm, good! Good work, boy. Now, for the next lesson. This way." Zackariah opened the door to the back room and invited Haltar to follow him to the other side.
    The back of the store was a little more messier than the front: open boxes, shelves with full and empty bottles, and in a corner there was a desk full of stills and other laboratory tools. Zackariah approached the desk. "Well, now with the herbs you picked, we'll try to create a healing potion. Here, I'll show you how."

    The old man patiently explained to Haltar the basics of alchemy to create the required potion: take an herb, crush it and mix it with other reagents he had in the laboratory, then put it in a bottle and cook the solution in a bain-marie for half an hour. While Zackariah instructed the boy, he did what he was told. Finally, he managed to get a bottle containing a pale green liquid. Zackariah examined it for a few seconds.
    "Hmm ... Well, boy, quality isn't the best, but considering it's your first time, I'd say you did well." he decreed with a smirk. "You will notice that you only used one of the herbs you collected. You can keep the other herbs, so you can practice. If you need a laboratory, you can come here for the first few times." He paused, then spoke again. "Now, I would have a small favor to ask. Should I deliver a package to Lyle Tealeaf, he is a blacksmith, his shop is not far from here. Can you do it, please?"
    "Of course, no problem. After all, you taught me a lot today!" answered Haltar.
    "Thank you very much! I'm going to take the package immediately, then." Zackariah took one of the boxes closed in a corner of the warehouse and handed it to Haltar. "Ah, I forgot! These are for you, as a starting gift for your adventure." he said putting another box on top of the one just delivered, a little smaller. "Inside you will find some potions of various types, they will be useful to you. Now go, before Lyle decides to go home!"
    "Oh! Thank you very much, really!" Haltar said, surprised at this gift. He turned and headed for the exit. "See you then, good evening!" and left the shop.

    Lyle's shop was a normal one seen from the outside, except for the huge fireplace at the back of the building. Inside, the air was a little warmer than outside.
    "Er... Good evening! I have a package for Mr. Lyle Tealeaf, from Zackariah!" Haltar said aloud, not seeing anyone at the counter. A moment later, he heard footsteps coming from the back.
    "Oh! Finally, it was time! That old man took it easy, this time!" A man about the same age as Zackariah entered from the back door, with soot-covered work clothes. "Put it there on the counter, boy. Now I have a favor to ask you." he said firmly, as if Haltar had come there on purpose to help him.
    The second request of the tutorial would start shortly thereafter.

  10. Haltar crossed his arms, looking up, weighing the girl's reasoning. Indeed, the only way to have milk was either directly as an item, or by collecting it somewhere. Or most likely, both ways. It would have been weird if it weren't so.
    "Hmm, put it this way, I guess you're right. Okay, let's see where this goat or something could be then..." He then began to search a few meters away from Akiris, walking slowly through the tall grass, trying not to make noise while moving, so as not to frighten any hidden animals.
    <The real problem, in case we find a goat or something similar, will be to keep it from fleeing. Maybe if we surround it we can hope to get close enough... or maybe with something to eat...>
    While he was thinking about how to stop the animal, Haltar noticed a point where the grass was moving differently, not following the light wind that was blowing in that moment. Noiselessly, he made a gesture to Akiris, pointing to the spot he had noticed. Perhaps they had already finished searching.

    @Akiris

  11. After a period of time that seemed an eternity to Haltar, he came to sift the whole plateau on which he was. He had found no new gem yet. When he realized he lost a lot of time in vain, he wanted to scream in frustration, but he barely didn't. Instead he sat on the edge of the plateau, fuming with anger and with his legs dangling.
    "How can it be that hard!? It had to be full of gems here!" He sat there grumbling for a couple of minutes, then lay down looking at the blue sky and the slowly flowing clouds. "... And now, what do I do? I have no idea..."
    While trying to get a good idea to get out of that situation, a noise from below interrupted his thoughts. He sat down to see what was happening, and noticed a boar approaching the rock where he was. Intrigued by this fact, Haltar lay down on his stomach to observe him secretly. The boar came to the rock, then began to scratch it with his fangs, as if looking for something.
    <What is it looking for?> After a couple of seconds, Haltar had an intuition. <That's who takes the gems! Not other players, but wild boars! Maybe they eat them? In any case, I want them!>
    Crawling backwards so as not to be seen, Haltar began to descend from the rock, descending from the opposite side, so that the animal could not see him.

  12. As soon as he felt rested enough, Haltar stood up and began to look carefully through the cracks in the plateau, hoping to find what he had not been able to see from below. He made sure to look at every single hiding place, even with the sun that dazzled him and made it difficult to search, but even here he found nothing new. He was starting to run out of options: he had scoured the whole area, and it was halfway up the plateau. By now it seemed clear that this place had nothing more to offer.
    "Please, please, I don't want to stay out here all day looking for some stupid stones... Come on, there must still be something around, I can feel it..."
    He talked to himself to try and make himself hopeful, but he didn't really believe in what he was saying. He would not have been able to tell if all this made him more discouraged or frustrated.

  13. Haltar was surprised when Akiris laughed. He honestly thought his idea was feasible, but when Akiris pointed out that the taste of food in the game and in the real world would be totally different, he realized how stupid his idea was. Despite this, the girl took it very well, laughing out loud. Haltar was nevertheless satisfied, that was his goal after all. He didn't mind at all, on the contrary he laughed too when he imagined the scene in which Akiris would prepare an inedible dish for his family. "Hahaha, yes you're right, it's not feasible at all!" Then he gave the girl a slightly mischievous smile. "Well, in that case, I can say that I had the honor of eating exclusive dishes prepared by you. I'm flattered by that."
    The search for the ingredients was going well: Akiris had managed to find some syrup, or something like that. Now she just needed...
    "A goat!?" Haltar was puzzled for a second. He had no idea that harmless animals like goats could be found out there. Did they really exist? He didn't have much experience, so he could have been wrong, but he hadn't seen any before.
    "It won't be easy, we certainly won't find it here..." He followed Akiris as she moved away into the fields. "Do you have any idea where we could find it? I have no idea where it could be..."

    @Akiris

  14. Climbing is quite simple, thanks to the natural grips of the rock.
    However, as he ascends, Haltar cannot see any other mineral.
    He is therefore forced to climb to the top to find something.The climb turned out to be safe, thanks to the numerous natural holds provided by the rock. After a few steps, Haltar was at midway of the climbing. After finding a fairly comfortable position, the boy tried to look around, leaning over to see if there was any extra mineral nearby. He saw nothing new though, so he was forced to climb even higher.
    <Dammit! I bet there are much better places to pick up materials than this. But no, I had to listen to the NPC, who knows how many other people will have said about this place! I have to find better places if I want to do this job in the future, otherwise I will have a very short career.>
    It didn't take long to get to the top of the rock. The top was a plateau illuminated by the sun, with the same irregularities on the wall. Haltar paused to catch his breath before continuing his search.

  15. Turning around the rock, Haltar finds nothing.
    He decides to try to climb.Haltar turned around the rock, checking every cavity as he passed by. He completed his way around without finding anything new. The boy puffed thinking of how much time he was losing: he was beginning to lose patience.
    <Ok, at this point I could try to climb it up to the top. And maybe I can even calm myself down a bit, before losing my patience and leaving.>
    He studied the wall for a few minutes, to make sure he had a simple route both to go up and down. He didn't have to climb many meters, but in any case better safe than sorry. Then he began the climb by climbing slowly, being careful to find a secure hold before taking the next step.
    <I hope that falling is not as painful as in reality, otherwise I would be risking a lot! But if I can stand a monster attack, I should have no problems with a fall of a few meters ... I hope.>

  16. Listening Akiris'story, Haltar became serious again. Her story was very similar to his, only with more people near her.
    <In the end, everyone of us left someone behind. We all have the same story.> He thought sadly.
    When the girl started crying, he saw himself again in the first months after the accident. He too continued to blame himself for everything, and sunk into despair, isolating himself from everything. He didn't want her to risk such a thing too.
    "Akiris, you couldn't know what would have happened if you tried the NerveGear. Neither of you has faults: neither your sister, nor you. And I don't find your crying ridiculous at all. Actually, it shows how much you care about your family."
    He thought about hugging her to make her feel better, but that wasn't the case: after all he had just met her. He just tried not to stare at her as he dried his tears, to keep her from feeling uncomfortable. When she tried to smile at him, he tried to make her think of the future rather than the past. "I'm sure that when you'll come back, the party you're going to do will be bigger than the wedding party! You should look forward to it!" He smiled at her to try to give her a little optimism.
    Then, when she went back to looking for the ingredients for her dessert, she had an idea. "Look, you said you work in a cafe, right? When you get back to work, you can't say you didn't do anything for two years. So I was thinking, you might think about some new sweet to do, so when you come back to yours family you can make him taste a typical dessert from Aincrad! What do you think?" It seemed to him like a great goal for the future. Not to mention the fact that he was curious to see what Akiris would have invented!

    @Akiris

  17. Akiris' statement left Haltar a little surprised, but after a moment he burst a loud laughing. "Haha, how can you tell? You never even saw it!" He then turned serious again. "Anyway, thank you. And I know: we'll be able to get out, I'm sure about that. I'm not going to stand by and watch, I did it for too long. I'll do my part as well." he concluded by placing his fist in front of him and squeezing it firmly. He didn't need comfort on this: he was committed to give all he got to join the frontlines as soon as possible.
    The confirmation from the girl about her friendship made him smile. "Well, if I find something interesting to do together, I'll message you then. Maybe we can hunt together."
    While Akiris went back to work, Haltar asked his question. It was his turn to get to know his new friend better. "Now it's your turn to tell. What brought you here to Aincrad?"

  18. Haltar, seeing Hazado undecided about what to do, hastened to respond him, waving his hands in front of himself. "Ah, sure, I don't mean to force you! If you have other things to do you can go, of course."
    That said, he began to walk towards the city, which was not so far from there. "Well, in the meantime we can go in that direction then."
    The journey back to the city went on smoothly as the sky turned orange. By now the sun was setting. Once near the city gates, Haltar opened the menu as he was walking. "Before saying goodbye, I would like to ask you for friendship, to keep in touch. So I will be able to message you when I'm ready to join your guild. I intend to train for myself a little more before sending you the request, so that I can know some other player." After a few seconds, he sent the friend request to Hazado.
    After crossing the gates and reaching the main crossroad, Haltar stopped and turned to Hazado. "Well, from here I think I can go on alone. If you wish, we can say goodbye here." he said, offering Hazado his hand and smiling at him.

    @Hazado

  19. Fortunately Akiris pulled Haltar out of the way, changing the subject for him. The boy was happy to go follow her by answering her question. "This is a rather peculiar story. You know, I shouldn't really be here." He waited a moment before telling his story.
    "Since I was a child, I had a friend who was always close to me. His name is Alessandro. We did everything together, spending whole days playing, we were inseparable." Remembering his childhood, he couldn't help but smile.
    "Then we grew up and our streets split up. Ale has always loved Japan, and in the end he decided to move there, while I stayed at home in Italy. But we always kept each other in touch, telling each other everything that was happening to us."
    "Sometimes I even went to visit him. Last time he showed me how he had managed to get a NerveGear, he was really happy. And since he knew that I am also fond of video games, and I was on vacation, he let me try it while he was at work."
    He smiled sadly at the idea of the scene that must have appeared before his best friend when he returned home. "It must not have been nice at all to find me stuck there..." he concluded in a slightly lower voice. Then he immediately recovered. "But all in all, I'm glad it happened. At least he was spared."
    At that moment a popup appeared before his eyes. He read Akiris's friend request, and clicked on the confirmation button with a smile. "Thanks Akiris! Does this mean I can invite you to some other day out?" he asked laughing.

    @Akiris

  20. Examining it closely, the wall appeared much more jagged than the previous one, full of cavities where the hand could easily be inserted. Perhaps the wall could even be climbed. Haltar looked up: the wall was at least three times his height. Maybe going up would have been easy, but he wasn't sure he could get off without hurting himself.
    He shook his head after a second. He wasn't there to do some climbing, and he wasn't even very trained, he would risk to get hurt. Although, perhaps up there he could have found more materials.
    Before risking the climb, he examined the wall from the ground, slipping his hand into each hole. He found nothing in any of the crevices that the rock offered, so he moved to the back of the rock as not to leave anything behind before trying to climb to the top.

  21. Finding the stone wall completely empty made Haltar a little irritated, who walked to the boulder with a firm step. "Oh no, you can't be empty! Now you have to give me something!" he said aloud, beginning to check closely every corner of the rock.
    It would have been a problem if he didn't find anything. He would not have known where to go after this, he would have to go back to ask for directions, in the city or to some passing player.
    After a while Haltar managed to find another gem stuck in a cavity. "Ah ha! Here you are at last! Come on... Come on out..." he said as he fumbled with the mineral until he managed to extract it.
    He had this habit of talking to himself when no one was around. Probably if someone had passed by there he would have thought he was crazy, but he wouldn't even have noticed it, as he was engaged in his business.

  22. Although the subject was not to her liking, Akiris nevertheless found the way to smile to Haltar while answering him. The boy had the impression that she wanted to reassure him, as if to say that everything would be fine.
    In that moment Haltar felt the need to agree with her and not to appear restless. He then smiled back at her. "Yes, I think you're right. It is enough for our family and our friends to remember us."
    But there was another thing that struck him in Akiris's question. He had noticed a spark of curiosity, as if she wanted to understand why he had expressed the need to remember everything that happened in the game. For some reason this thought made him uncomfortable. He could not say why, he simply chose to close the conversation to avoid further discomfort. Only then did he realize that he had stiffened for a moment before responding to Akiris: he hoped she hadn't noticed.
    All of this, however, did not prevent him from noticing the wit with which she had managed to get him to retreat from the subject. <She certainly knows her business, no doubt about it. She is definitely a sharp girl and able to defend for herself.> He looked at her for a moment before looking back at the surrounding grasslands, looking for something to say.

    @Akiris

  23. While Haltar was lost in his memories, Hazado approached Haltar. His presence was reassuring, despite being younger than him. The battles he had faced must have made him much more mature than a normal boy of his age. His words were inspiring for Haltar, giving him new confidence.

    "Thank you very much, Hazado. I can see you've been through a lot. You look like a nice guy too. I'll definitely come to visit your guild, I'll be happy to help you out!"
    At that moment, Haltar noticed the last grass he needed. In his enthusiasm, he reached out with a sudden gesture, risking to tear it and lose the material. As soon as the confirmation message popped out, he jumped up. "Yes, finally! Now we can go back!"
    Before setting out to return to the city, he turned to Hazado. "Thank you so much for accompanying me, it was nice to have you along. Do you want to accompany me up to Zackariah? It shouldn't take long."

    @Hazado

  24. Star seemed thoughtful after Haltar's explanation, but quickly recovered and thanked him for the advice. Then, as soon as two boars appeared nearby, she launched herself to attack one of the two, scoring a clear blow. Haltar smiled as Star retreated a few steps to make room for him.
    <Maybe she is starting to get the hang of this... Very well, she'll make a great traveling companion!> He ran a hand through his brown hair to move them from his face, before getting ready to strike. <It's up to me now, let's go!>
    He ran towards the same boar that Star had struck, repeating the charge used against their first opponent. The green-lit blade drew an arc in the air, hitting the beast. This one, however, wasn't scared at all: after taking the blow it crashed into Haltar, hitting him on the leg.
    The armor prevented the fangs from hurting the boy, but the impact made him lose his balance, forcing him to step back, just in time to see the other boar run through the spot where he was just before.
    "Wow, that was close!" exclaimed Haltar as he returned to his guard. "One more Star hit, then we'll be one-on-two!"
