    THE SHOP is located on the fringes of Taft, fronting a large townhouse that seems to be devoid of residents. Yet, the shop appears to be manned near constantly, even when it is reported to not be open for business. 

    The sounds of its performer are vastly different from most other workshops, as heard by others from the ______________
    outside. They are modern and synthetic rather than fantastical, ill suited for the setting. But that, too, may be part of its draw.

    It is a young boy in his teens who lives there. He sits behind a basic counter towards the back of the store, blocking two doors — one bedroom, one recording studio. Crystals ______
    are displayed as samples on wall indents, acting as shelves alongside the shop's confines. By the entrance, a small collection vanity crystals sit in an open crate. They're prototypes, free for the taking — but they're not great.  

    Once in a while, however, the PLAY . HOUSE seems to easily get a winner.

  14. demian gestured to basuke with a thumb, too. “it’s cool. look, this kid’s lacking instrument knowledge anyway, so why don’t we sit down and help him out together?”

    “what?” hey, this wasn’t part of the deal. basuke looked to demian, devastated, as the man approached landon with an open hand.

    “i gotta fix my lute. you know that.”

    “i can fix it up faster for you. hand it over.”

    landon eyed demian suspiciously as he got close. but he held out the lute for demian to take it, before gesturing to basuke to walk towards him. “did you bring the materials from earlier?”

    basuke was a little peeved as he did, pulling out the materials needed for the quest to continue. they sat on his hand like tiny glowing baubles, and the boy held them out. “yeah. here they are.”

    “okay, cool!” landon rubbed his nose. he took the materials and stood up from his stool, headed towards his shop’s counter, beckoning for basuke to follow. “look, here’s what we’re going to do…”

    the boy didn’t just yet. instead, he looked to demian, who was starting to fiddle with the lute. a part of him felt a little betrayed at the man’s promise – and just as he thought that, his friend looked up to him, reading his expression. demian seemed to understand immediately. “i’ll get this done soon,” he clarified, “so go listen to landon, and i’ll help you out afterwards. alright?”

    basuke almost didn’t seem to believe him. so demian added in an extra tidbit for the boy – “i need to help you pick a suitable place to live in, after all.”

    that sealed the deal for basuke. with an enthusiastic nod, he started his way towards landon, eager to begin.

  15. “hey,” basuke spoke up, looking towards him for answers. “so earlier you said no instruments, just theory.”

    “that’s right.”

    “then what were you doing with mostima in the recording booth?”

    demian hummed, short. there was a brief pause as his eyes looked away, before they settled on basuke again, this time with a smile. it made basuke feel a little uneasy –

    “oh. she was recording a song for someone, and wanted me to review the vocals. that’s all.”

    – until he heard the reason behind it. basuke nodded, curious now. “is it someone… you know too?”

    his friend’s expression slowly changed, the man straightening his back a little. 

    “somewhat.”

    basuke blinked twice. what was with the hesitation? he’d assumed demian had a history with mostima himself – was this in relation to that? the boy let out a carefree, “oh,” before considering what to say. “you don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”

    “good,” demian replied, watching basuke from the corner of his vision. “i wasn’t going to.”

  16. so the tip of his sword sank into dirt again, and a rumble underneath him stopped the approaching wargs from movement, figures frozen in place as they’d transitioned into a more ferocious attack. their distraction quickly shifted towards the trio, guarding their front with its body, snarling at the players.

    basuke seemed to hesitate.

    “it’s fine if i take them all down,” he asked, looking to demian for a response. “right? that’s the eradication of a whole pack right there–”

    “in the field,” demian replied, a hand slotted into his pant’s pocket. “you don’t usually have the luxury of deciding. i figured you’d seen this sort of behaviour before, in a pack.”

    the boy sucked in his lower lip, nodding, before giving the wolves a promising final blow. a swift uppercut, basuke sliced the guardian upwards before jabbing forward, trying to be accurate – one pierce for each stunned warg, and the canines were down for the count. the ashes they left behind drifted peacefully upwards after the shatters of their forms, as demian set a hand on his shoulder again.

  17. demian often had an eyepatch on, and today was no different. but what changed was that in the dark, basuke could make out a faint pink sigil engraved onto the leather – and it glowed, almost bright enough for him to see into the dark. it wasn’t a flashlight, but it worked well as a marker for him to pinpoint where his ally was, besides the green crystal above his head.

    without warning, demian grabbed basuke by the collar of his hoodie and flung him aside. his sword arm struck the ground tip-first. while the world was a mess of dark, earthy colours speckled with light, demian’s call out – “there’s seven of them present; here’s the vanguard!” – told the boy all he needed to know about their situation.

    he rolled, and picked himself up from the ground as he shook the dirt off himself. turned to demian, he spotted their enemy besides the man. four were present, each stuck in one place.

  18. out past the gates. basuke had searched for materials before, so he knew approximately what they looked like. so too did his familiar screech when it believed he got close to one, so after a quick dip around, he managed to find one amidst the grass. basuke held it up for demian to see – a white ball of something-or-other.

    “look what i got! haha, this will be a cinch!”

    and demian seemed unmoved, almost confused. “that’s one way to go about looking for materials, i suppose.”

    “one way?” basuke tilted his head. “hold on, don’t tell me you gather it by hunting enemies, too.”

    “not always.” demian replied, summoning forth his sword. “but it’s the easiest way to get them.”

    “so much for telling me to be safe when you’re not.”

    “well –” demian offered basuke a hand, helping him up to his feet. “ – there’s two of us now. so that makes us extra safe if we take them on together, don’t you think?”

  19. “erm– not really.” tucking away the crystal, basuke shoved a palm across the back of his scalp, wondering if he should be concerned at all. “but– hey, you know how to, right?”

    his friend raised a brow. “i suppose i know a little.”

    “then you can teach me, can’t you?”

    demian looked into the distance, crossing his arms. “well, it’s not that easy…”

    “well, do i even need to be good at it to complete the quest?”

    demian squinted, as the boy looked up to him. “are you even thinking of making money off of your songs?”

    “not really, no?”

    and the question coming from basuke stunned demian speechless. as he searched for words, basuke continued to speak, waving about with a scrunched face trying to justify having embarked on the quest himself. “look, all i need is a place to stay in for a little while if you say it’s so dangerous outside. hell, i could bum it out on the streets right now if i so choose to… it’s just rougher than it was outdoors, s’all.”
