  1. As yet another empty hook seemed to crush the boy's spirits, Lucas only sat in wait. The weather was cool and the wind kissed the boy's cheeks gently. How could he be upset on a day like this. Mama used to say, "Why frown while the Earth is smiling so bright?" And if Lucas was being honest, just the thought often managed to cheer him up so quickly. "Guess it's time to try again." He would mumble to himself as he wound back for yet another wonderful cast.

Hopefully this time such a wonderful cast would bring something in. Slowly though, his high spirits would be eaten away slowly as the empty hooks piled up. If only these fishies would bite so I could go get some snacks, or take a walk through town. I guess I'll have to sit here and just keep going until Sunset, then I can take a nap and try again after. The water remained dormant but the fish were certainly stirring beneath.

  2. Putting another tiny bit of bait on the line and pulling it back, Lucas thought about his older sister, how she used to always cheer him up when life was getting a bit rough. One time after Lucas had broken up a fight, getting hurt pretty badly in the process, he came home to a table full of his favorite foods. His sister stood smiling over the mess of junk food without asking him anything about what happened. She knew if he was going to tell her what happened he would, but for now celebrating such a good deed would suffice.

He did eventually tell her and she hugged him for being a brave little bird. He hated the nickname but she wouldn't stop calling him that even if he'd asked nicely. Not a mean bone in his body and that's thanks to his loving family. The line reached the shore with the idle sway of the water to match his thoughts. His bobber floated up gently to the cane pole he was growing very fond of.

  3. Lucas's line sat dormant for a moment, floating in the water like a log, so the boy gave it a light flick. Maybe he could get a bite if he was a bit more patient. As of right now though, it might be better to just recast and hope for the best. His brother's tricks might not help a lot in this world, but the boy was hoping they could. Might be nice to keep a bit of home with him as he goes. He always said, "take a bit of smelly bait, a nice comfortable pole and a wonderful day, and you'll catch a lake's worth of fish in no time." He knew so much about the world it's hard to believe I can ever survive here without him. Memories of the pranks his brother always pulled came flooding back as Lucas watched the light reflect off of the water.

    "Oh shoot."

His hand grasped the reel and started working, pulling the ruined bait in and inspecting the line. Bait can't survive forever, even if it was prayed over by a priest.

  4. And the first bit was cast, Lucas couldn't help but feel antsy, wondering if he was going to catch anything scary. It was almost as if he wanted something crazy to happen. Monsters were great fun to fight, if he could handle them. He didn't like hurting things though, so most of the time he found some lower level players to help him. This time though he was by himself and his friend he had just made was sitting in his shack.

As Lucas slowly reeled in the line he felt a snag, but nothing really bit so he would have to reset his cast. "I wonder if I'll be allowed to keep the fish I catch." The young boy would say, quietly of course, wouldn't want to scare away the fish he was hoping for. A quick wind up and flick forward would set the cast a good 20 feet from shore and Lucas would sit for a moment.

"I hope the fish are tasty here, I used to love Salmon back home."

  5. Lucas had finally made his way as far out as he could fathom, considering his current level. Maybe his recent interactions emboldened him, or maybe he was just now working up the courage to go out in the field now that he had worked his way up a few levels. It's not like he had been in trouble where he was, but he was definitely not fond of being in danger. "Maybe I'll actually go out and get a job, might be easier to make money that way." The boy would remark as he walked up to the janky shack overhanging a lake. The man walks up and speaks to Lucas, making a remark about what most people would expect when looking for an angler. "No no, I heard my dad liked to fish so I don't picture old men when I think of fishermen." The boy explains, forgetting he's talking to a mass of code.

The man quickly explains what to do and Lucas decides he has nothing better to do, so why not take a shot? Besides, a rainbow fish sounds really cool so it could make a cool story for him to tell his new friend. Lucas grabs a fishing pole and walks outside to the lake before looking around and setting down on a rock. The bait sits in an opened tin as the kid struggles to put some on the hook. His brother taught him how to bait a hook when he was a wee lad, so Lucas had some experience in this regard.

  7. The boy's eyes wandered, but his focus remained on the woman. That path out of town was really grabbing at his attention but he hadn't missed a word she had said. "I will admit it was kind of cool what you did." He would say, his spear disappearing off of his back once again. Carrying it around, even on walks through the field felt off to him. Like he was saying "look what my strengths are" He felt like it was baring too much. Besides, a spear is long and annoying, always bumping into things when you're walking through the forest. When she'd finally admitted the merits of both their ways Lucas smiled at her once more, her words having grabbed his attention and pulled it back to herself. "Yea-"

Then her compliment(?) graced his ears. The boy's eyes would widen as he turned his head away from her to hide his very obvious blushing. "Oh please..." As much as Lucas loved compliments, he had no idea how to handle them. "Well... Thank you I guess... ahem. You're uh... a total badass." His face only grew more red with a compliment of his own, and had she turned back her coward remark might not fit too well anymore.

Once his blushing had settled, he would turn back to her, his cheeks still a bit rosy as he tried to formulate an invitation in his mind. "I was going to go for a walk today, but uh... you're welcome to join me if you'd like." He'd say, shutting his eyes and scratching the back of his head with a chuckle to try and help him relax.

  8. A plate gliding through the air, a player narrowly missed and an argument Celeste knew she was starting. Lucas would sit and smile, hoping the player was a follower of his ideology. The moment the other player said a word in return, Lucas's spear would materialize on his back. It was wrapped in a gray rag from tip to base, and it would remain on his back until he would absolutely need to use it. Yet his smile would never disappear.

He was ready to stand and fight beside this girl who had obviously started the whole thing.

"Bravo, miss. What a wonderful play. You've shown me your weapon, your idea of imposing, and you've ruined that kids day. Meanwhile I sit here and smile as you've both done nothing but prove my point." He would say, his arms out stretched in a cocky manner pointing towards either of the aggressive people he just witnessed. "You were mean to him, causing him to get angry. This is where my point is proven the first time. He never would've noticed you had you simply let the plate go." The boy would hold up a single finger as a counter. "One." Taking a sharp breath and looking around the area at the eyes that were now on them. His fingers mark two. "He gets angry, causing you to only spit more venom. If he would've let it go, things wouldn't have escalated. That's two."

Before he starts his final point Lucas steps out in front of Celeste. "Then you prove to him you are capable of defending yourself against the weapon he has drawn. All eyes are on you and him, yet no one gives either of you a glimmer of fear. He decides you're not worth the time and walks away, which is what I would've done from the start. But notice, after he decided to walk away, you said nothing to him and you've probably forgotten his face."

Lucas then holds up a third finger. "Three." His smile forms with almost cocky timing, but not one bit malicious. As if he was truly oblivious to the idea of her being wrong and him being right. "And I believe I've said multiple times, I am no pushover."

  9. Lucas was definitely getting antsy, his plan was to walk the field today which was obvious the way he would glance down the path to get out of town every so often. It wasn't that he wasn't enjoying this time, he just wishes they could walk and talk. "Like I said, I'm not a pushover. I don't expect anyone to bend to my whim, why should I bend to theirs? Someone wants to be angry then let them, I'm not going to get angry too."  Lucas tilted his head. "Although I do get angry sometimes." The boy couldn't remember last time he got angry, other than when he learned the truth of why he never met his father. All he ever heard was how his father was a horrible man, and that there was no way Lucas was going to turn out right with those genes.

That's where most of his fights came from. Mean words lead to mean actions, unless you counter them with kindness. "If someone yells at me and I yell back, does it not mean I feel threatened? And if I feel threatened, all it does is embolden the aggressor. You ask why I don't just shove them off, but I know you see the stupidity in fighting fire with fire." He then looks to be lost in thought for a moment, staring at the ground.

"Although, there is a way to fight a wildfire by burning the fuel before it can reach it. Sorry, not the best analogy."

  10. Her pointed words only made the kid nod, a pretty sight to imagine but never getting much more to satisfy the thought.

As for her next words Lucas looked up at the sky and pondered for a moment. "Because pointed words are nothing more than that. That's not to say they never lead to scuffles in the streets, but as far as I'm concerned there's no reason to be mean to someone over words." Lucas looked down at the cake. "Bitter foods aren't quite as popular as sweet ones, right? The same goes for people." His fork pick up the last bite of the cake and be placed sweetly in his mouth. "But more than that, I like being nice and I like cake. Why not be nice and share it."

The boy had been raised on sharing and politeness. He wasn't always the best kid, but she didn't need to know that. "Anger isn't powerful, it's weak. Dropping a match into gasoline is a lot easier than holding a match until it goes out." The boy's plate would disappear as he stood to his feet.

"Anything else you want to ask?"

  11. Lucas had, in all appearances, made a new friend and shared some of the wealth the game had given him at the start of it all. She seemed a bit angrier at any given moment than the boy ever was in his life time. "Lucas means 'bright' and upon realizing this, people generally laugh. I always hear that it fits me so well. As for Celeste, it has a beautiful elegance I approve of. Like a fine sword flowing through the wind. Graceful as a river yet just as strong." His praise seemed like a bit much, even for his liking, but once words were said they cannot be undone. "Although, it does seem like a Princess's name." The boy would snicker at the thought of her in a frilly dress and a tiara. "Although, you could embrace it. As funny as it would look, a tiara of the right color might suit you." Once again, a bright smile would cover his face.

He would reach down and take another bite as she looked on her own piece for a moment. She would speak while Lucas had his mouth full and an audible gulp would be heard as he choked down the piece of cake. "Well, what do you want to understand? I'm an open book." There could be no doubt, he was definitely okay with answering any question he might be asked. After all...

Secrets don't make the best of friends.

  12. Lucas was having trouble figuring this lady out, he stood up to her a little bit and she backed down completely. Even still though, He didn't want to be rude, so he would look up at the server and smile. "Two red velvet cakes please." It had been quite a while since the boy was able to enjoy a quiet meal, and in that time he has been building up the courage to dine with others... weird how both issues settled on the same day. "So, you out hunting or are you just walking the floor like I am?" He smiles back at the woman beckoning him from fountain.

"Celeste is a pretty name. I got stuck with Lucas, but I enjoy it." He would smile taking a bite of the cake covered in white frosting with red sprinkles and a cherry on top. "Hey! I happen to like these clothes." He would chuckle a bit, opening his inventory and looking at her outfit for a moment. "I think I know what you might be okay with." A purple sweatshirt would cover his entire torso, as a pair of blue jeans materialized to cover his legs. Work boots would comfortably place themselves over his feet and the boy would extend his arm with cake on the end towards the woman.

"Bitter, just like you." He would chuckle to himself. "No... it's the sweetest one this shop has."

  13. Lucas had no idea what this woman was on about, no reason for her to be mean to him seeing as how he hasn’t done anything to set her off. ”Hey ma’am, I’m sorry but I don’t think I caught your name yet.” He would tilt his head, lookin go at her with a look of pure innocence. ”My name is Lucas. And as for better clothes, I have some more that you might like better, but I don’t know how much you’ll like it.”

As far as her blatant threat, Lucas barely blinked in response, the appalling statement to most was just another question to the angel of Aincrad. ”It would be rude to take my cake, and you seem rather nice. Blunt but nice. And besides, this is a safe zone, worst you could do is knock me around a bit and that’s nothing new.” Despite never being bullied or anything, Lucas had been in his fair share of fights. Beatings more accurately, and mostly on the receiving end of the kids’ wrath. ”Plus, you have no idea what I’m capable of, I’m not spineless.”

”It’s not like I don’t hear the insults, but what’s the point of challenging them? You don’t know me any better than I you, so why not get to know you?”

  14. Lucas was already nervous around this woman, but her words still cut like a knife, despite his unusually thick skin for such a mild tempered boy. He wouldn't even react to the venom in her tone, only to the words she said. "What do you mean? Would...?" Before he could continue, the woman would begin speaking over his quiet queries. When she had finished her assault on the boy, the young player would look at her with a soft smile, almost making eye contact, aside from the fact that his eyes were closed. "OH! Well, I was sixteen when I joined, but I lost track of how long we've been in here. I'd say I'm around seventeen or eighteen by my rough estimate." Her comment about his attire would have him blush and look down at the outfit he was currently wearing. "I'm sorry, would you like me to change?"

Before she could respond, his inventory would be open and his clothes would disappear and reappear as something entirely different. Over the old white shirt he was wearing a blue jacket would fall, quite baggy but super soft. His cargo shorts would be replaced with khaki Joggers and his sandals would be replaced with bright blue flip flops. "Is that better miss?" He would resume his bright smile he had given her.

"If it is, I should be going. I have red velvet cake to be getting. You can have a piece if you want."

  15. Before Lucas had a chance to order the sweet cake his body was practically begging for, a woman shouted to him from a large enough distance the sound managed to only catch his attention. The words went in one ear and out the other, not really digging too deep as he cared little what people thought of him anyways, all he wanted to do was help. Was that in reference to me? His eyes would search the surrounding area and fixate on a female closing the gap between them. Assuming she was talking to someone else though, Lucas would turn away from the woman and begin walking towards the bakery he was originally intending on going to.

Then once again she spoke to him, and he would turn once more, hoping to see her speaking to someone else but her eyes were on him. Uh-oh. He'd blush and avert his eyes, placing his hands in his pockets. His shoulders would rise as he looked at the ground. "Oh, sorry I don't know how to play golf. The scoring system is very complicated... besides, it's really boring and everyone wears such silly outfits it's funny." He'd smile faintly, but his body language still screamed lack of confidence. Boy if there were anyway to describe Lucas that would fit the bill better than most sentences. "Are you about to go play golf?" He would ask, trying to be polite and make conversation.

  16. Lucas stood in the exact center of Delilah, taking in the glorious sights of the city and smiling. He was definitely underdressed for combat A white tea shirt and some cargo shorts with sandals to boot, but today wasn't about that. Today was his day off, he was planning on killing a bit more time by watching the world go by without a word to stop it. Maybe he could make a new friend to try and help today, or maybe he could get a ridiculously large ice cream cone and try to balance it throughout the city like a circus clown, after all, the bottom of the next floor was the limit. Blue skies, but it makes no sense, seeing as the next floor is right above this one. It should create a shroud dark enough to plunge this floor into an unending darkness. But instead it shines like it's not a death trap made from another man's sick dream.

He had no idea how full this world was with adventure, but he knew it had to be brimming, the skies wouldn't glow such a pretty hue if the world wasn't ripe for the taking.

A low rumble would side track the boy as he stared up in awe, his eyes would dart down to his stomach and his hand would rub it to try and alleviate it's anger. "Better get some food before I forget." The game did a pretty fine job of simulating hunger, and the food definitely made that feeling go away, but if it wasn't dessert, it really wasn't worth it. "Red Velvet cake it is." His smile would grow brighter as he walked on his merry way through town in search of a bakery.

  17. Lucas had been minding his own business and walking along his merry way, when suddenly a really tall man approached him. His look was reminiscent of an anime protagonist, but one of those "I'm strong" types not the relatable types. The boy would begin getting flustered, showing the palms of his hands in a very flashy way, his eyes would scan the person in front of him, struggling to get a read on this guy before him. "OH! I'm sorry I'm just really weak. I don't have anything great, so I keep it in my inventory. Up here not much it could do to protect me anyways." He would smile softly and place one of his hands on the back of his neck, "Skim a little off the damage at best." His smile would disappear and his eyes would return to the man before him. "But I guess a healer would be nice to bring along. I wanna be a tank so it'd be good to meet a few healers." His voice was high pitched and a little cracky, but it was obvious he was old enough to have at least gotten his learner's permit.

His spear hanging from his back was all he needed at the time, because if nothing else, he could make the monster angry and draw attention to himself. "Oh yeah! hah, My name's Lucas. What's yours... your username I mean." It was rude to ask someone you met online for their real name when meeting them for the first time, but this game felt so real that Lucas often forgot the etiquette that entailed.

    @Valentine

  18. Lucas stands, staring out at his new home, the one he had been forcefully leased and contracted to stay in. Breaking said lease would cost him his life. Being a tenant, however, wasn't so displeasing as most would have you believe. He watched as the sun rose and set every night, and he was finally up to the sixth floor, a long way from the inn he stayed in nightly. His armor wasn't required for such a visit, so today he just carried a spear on his back, with rags covering his body as if he was a boy in the streets of New York, not a warrior wanting to sacrifice his well being for the others trapped in this game with him.

Plain clothes for a plain boy, though somehow he had managed to grab the attention of an old gypsy walking through the streets. She spoke nonsense to the child, but he understood. Use a pouch of treats to claim a familiar as his own and use it to keep himself company... to keep himself safe. "Thank you, I will go find one now." A blushing young boy would smile and turn, walking across the square to the edge of the town, hoping to find his way into the field and claim an awesome pet for his safe keeping.

  19. Lucas walked back in to the cluttered shop, smiling all the way to the counter where his items lay and he would set a pouch of materials on the island before sliding the shield off and holding it in his hands, admiring the work in the shop. It would quickly transfer into his inventory and the young boy would be surprised to see it disappear before looking around for the shield. Quickly he would pick up the spear and just as fast it would disappear into his inventory, the same look of confusion on his face. “Thank you mister.” the look of confusion obvious in his voice as well, the boy would step out of the store onto the path back to the first floor, opening his inventory and letting out a sigh of relief as he spotted the two items.

    Wrath of the heavens

  20. Lucas had been pacing outside the store for a half hour before finally working up the courage to enter the shop. It was very chaotic but organized. Everything had a place but you would never be able to guess that place. It was obvious the man who owned this shop had experience in a trade in the real world. Lucas looked around and sighed. He had no idea where to go or if he was even supposed to be there, so he walked up to the surface with the biggest open space and the closest hammer, assuming this would be the place the man crafts at, he would place a slip of paper on the table and leave the shop hoping to only return if he’s asked to.

Getting Trapped in a death game wasn’t the worst thing to happen to Lucas, in fact it was barely in the top ten. For the most part, his life was boring. Not too many friends but not a total loner, decent grades, decent house. On the outside he had it made, but upon closer inspection his world was hell. He’d trapped himself in a prison of hard work and no traction to push on. His friends were nothing more than a group he would text sometimes and hang out with even less. His grades made it seem like he was skating by, but He was pulling all nighters studying and drilling the subjects only to bring home a steady stream of Bs and low As. His house was nice but the family inside was dysfunctional to say the least.

He had no father, none that he knew anyways. The youngest of three by 8 years, Lucas was the only one who missed out on knowing his old man, but from he’d heard the guy was great. Clean cut, high paying job, had fast cars and a silver tongue but also had a wild streak. The family life was nothing compared to a new women and a drive down The coast. Lucas couldn’t really blame him, this life was boring and when it wasn’t it just plain sucked. So he took after his old man and tried to find an escape, but a much more tame and reasonable hobby would do fine for the child.

    He picked Video Games.

By the time he was 15, Lucas had mastered just about every engine he picked up, to the point he was beating games and putting walkthroughs online. It was a good pass time, and it helped dilute the sludge of his sewer drain life. His favorite world to run to was an old fantasy game with very few players left. Less than 100k and on the verge of shutting down, but those remaining players were loyal as hell and Lucas was glad to be one of the survivors. He was a top notch tank in this hole in the wall title that had shone and faded in its own time, separate of the boy’s, but he wanted to know how it felt to help people.

Truly help them, not just press helpful buttons on a keyboard. That’s when he heard from an old buddy about a full dive system. You were practically in the game, being the character and making them move as if they were your own arms and legs. He couldn’t resist himself, so he decided to join. Those first few days were amazing, even after finding out they were trapped. He’d joined as an escape, so when he learned there was no return he really didn’t care all that much. Slowly though, it sank in that he wouldn’t see his family again. They were a mess, but his mom’s over protective nature and his brother’s incessant teasing were his favorite parts of this life, not to mention his older Sister’s need to always put a smile on the boy’s face. He wanted to get back home, but needed to protect people along the way. If there’s one thing his family taught him it’s this...

The best way to overcome adversity is helping someone so they can pull you up.

    Virtues

Helpful- Lucas only wants to be helpful, he’d always tried to be useful in some way but would often stumble and end up hurting himself or others. It was better to get hurt than to let others get hurt, because he knew how to get back up. Why make someone else do it when you can do it and save them the trouble? Isn’t that the very definition of selfish?

Protective- The people he wants to keep safe can rest easy knowing he’ll always have their backs even in the toughest of situations. Overcoming adversity to make sure someone else doesn’t have to is Lucas’s favorite pass time, and he’ll do so without even asking first. Even the people he doesn’t know aren’t excluded from This umbrella’s protective cover.

Kind- Why be mean when you can be nice instead? It’s so much more fun to see others smile and laugh with you instead of run away or get angry at you, and it’s the worst seeing someone upset. Lucas has trouble passing people by if they look discontent in any way shape or form, because it would be rude, and being rude is mean.

    Flaws:

Simple- Lucas has a very simple way of looking at things. Subtle hints and clues tend to go right over his head, especially when it comes to people. He can’t read a room for the life of him, and has more trouble figuring out what to say when the atmosphere turns gloomy and unpredictable. That’s not to say he won’t talk at all, it just won’t be the right thing to say at the time.

Easily Manipulated- This one is thanks to his overwhelmingly nice behavior, and simple views. The kid has no chance of picking up on the signs of a poor intention behind a suggestion. It’s a weakness that he doesn’t care to try and fix because even mean people need help some times, and if he can do so who cares if they lie a little bit. It can still be an issue thanks to his undying need to help anyone and everyone, but it’s not as bad as his other issues.

Naive- Lucas doesn’t believe in bad guys, he believes that no one is inherently evil and everyone’s default setting is good. Even in a death game with killers, the boy fears nothing because he hasn’t even thought of the possibility of murder. No one can be evil because it’s so much better to be nice, right?
