  1. Normally, Iris wasn't even sure if she'd be willing to be this close to someone else that she'd just met.  Not because there was anything wrong with Avoryn, but she was simply...not really the sort of person to get close to people that quickly.  She didn't mind, over time, cementing a friendship, becoming closer and just allowing herself to open up to someone fully.  But that took time for her to forge that trust with another individual and to allow her to...let go some of the apprehensions she had about doing that kind of thing.

But right now, she was just so raw with emotion and shock that the shell that normally covered her, keeping her inner thoughts and feelings tucked away was just...gone.  She was at her absolute, lowest level of grief right now.  She was trapped in a world she hated, and the one person she'd known at the time was...gone.  Dead, because she'd been too much of a coward to help fight back.  She'd let him die and there was no one that she could blame but herself.

All the same, she felt herself pulled a little more against Avoryn, not fighting the woman and shaking slightly.  She had already cried out nearly everything she had, and it wasn't like the game would let her cry, not for real, but she could still feel her body's pull on her to shake and shudder as she felt her breaths coming in weakened, pained gasps.  It felt...comforting to be held like this.  It was weird, and there wasn't anything romantic about it, at least not to her, but it was still nice to have that feeling of someone else caring.  Beyond that, Avoryn was giving her own story, and it was, for good or ill, eerily close to her own.

The words were too unpracticed, stumbling over themselves, repeating parts...to be a fabricated story.  Even now, her father's lessons were keeping her going.  Listen to their words, their choice of phrase.  Their actions, body language.  Everything someone did told a story about themselves and she got the same feeling from Avoryn that she'd been feeling about herself, just now.  The woman was trying to help her through this...but it wasn't as if the emerald-haired lady next to her wasn't going through her own pain.  That was likely just as much for herself as it was for Iris.

"Yeah...thanks," she agreed, once Avoryn had gotten up to see about getting them drinks.  "I think that'd be nice," she responded, before picking again at her food, her gaze unfocused as she looked at it.  Her appetite was gone, but she still didn't really know how to access her inventory, and she didn't really want to leave it sitting on the table.  As she picked up the piece, she noted that the whipped cream atop it somewhat...hid all of the chocolate.  The bright, inviting topping hid all of the darker chocolate beneath.

Her gaze lifted back to Avoryn, even as she took a bite of the damnably good pie.  Despite all that she'd endured, she was still trying her best to stay upbeat.  Positive.  Her head turned, looking at the other people around.  The dour atmosphere was broken up here and there by pockets of conversation- people trying to get groups together to level up or even talk about guilds and scaling floors.  The positivity was...infectious might be a strong word, but she at least felt moved by that optimism.  She couldn't just...stay dour.  Iris was a social person and she couldn't...just have people pass her by because of a dark cloud hanging over her.  She...had to be like this pie.  Maybe just as tasty, too.

"So what's your plan now?" she asked as the woman had come back toward her, with drinks in hand.  "Going to join up with other people to...I don't know.  Do quests or whatever?"

  2. Well, if she wasn't hungry, she wasn't hungry.  Astreya was fine with that.  She was really only offering to be polite- right now there was an empty void in her soul and she was pretty sure that this chocolate pie wasn't going to fill, but she couldn't be really sure until she ate it all.  And if she had the chance to devour this entire thing, she would.  Like she'd already commented, it wasn't like there was any real ability to gain weight or calories in here- the game just took your self-image as it was when you started playing and that was who you were... didn't matter what you ingested in the meantime.

The woman introduced herself and Astreya glanced up, giving her a small smile.  "Iris.  Or, uh, Astreya, I guess," she backpedaled.  "I'm not...really someone who plays games so I don't know if I should give my real name or my character name or what.  Not like it matters here," she murmured, before taking another slice of the pie and stuffing it into her mouth, chewing aggressively as she sought to just...fill the strangeness inside of her.  "And...yeah, not really in a great mood either," she agreed, nodding toward Avoryn

It was then that Avoryn shifted, moving up and coming a little closer to her.  It was at that point she noticed that the woman was...built.  She normally was pretty good about picking up on details from other people.  Hell, it was something that her father had basically trained her on since she was young.  But she'd missed it initially- however Avoryn seemed comfortable in proximity to her, and between a few of those things, that told her a number of things between those two details that she'd noticed.  The touch to her shoulder was still unexpected, although she didn't shy away, simply remaining where she sat.

"Not really," Astreya admitted with a small, mirthless smile.  "But I probably should," she began, hesitating as the last word fell from her lips.  She was...unsure.  Not that it mattered- she likely wasn't alone in that.  Logically, the number of people who had lost a loved one or at least someone close to them was going to be high.  There were a number of people that wanted to 'test' things, she'd heard, and that had led to deaths.  Then there had been accidents, like with Zack.

"I..." she began after a few seconds, her lips quivering before she steeled herself.  "Like I said, I'm not really a gamer or...whatever.  My boyfriend wanted me to play with him, and so I logged into here with him.  I tried other games but playing with a controller or on a computer just felt... I don't know.  Boring?  I play sports, I play chess, I like to do things.  So this game, I guess...sounded fun.  And now...he's gone," she finished, a little anti-climactically.  She wasn't even really talking to Avoryn, so much as she was just letting it out in general.  "I'm terrified, I'm angry, I'm devastated...I don't know what to do and I just...I don't want to be here.  It's all so fake and empty," she spoke, her voice starting to crack finally.

She knew that she should apologize for just dumping everything on this random person she'd sat near.  Or maybe offer to hear her out too.  It was selfish to think that her pain was greater than anyone else's, but it was just so...raw.  There were too many feelings and she felt like they were going to tear her apart- she just didn't have any way to get them out...

  3. "Catch."

That was about all the brunette had heard (having not been paying super close attention to the environment around her) before the snowball from Nari had caught her.  She had turned around to see who had said her name and had taken it full in the face.  That, of course, caused the young woman to spit and sputter the snow out of her mouth, the snowflakes clinking to her eyelashes and hair for a moment.  She looked over at Nari, before Jomei arrived, and then Hirru- but before she could offer greetings, Hirru had taken another shot at her as well.  Of course, the girl hadn't readied herself for this one either and there was yet another blow taken- this time, her attempts to move actually hindered her as her feet went right out from underneath of her and she fell back into one of the snow drifts.

Despite it all, even as she lay in the cold it didn't really bother her too much.  Her gaze was skyward on the piercing blue sky, her own sapphire gaze meeting it evenly.  While she had just been viciously assaulted by those she'd call friend, the young woman was clearly not at all offended by it all, and was merely just amused, more than anything.

She didn't realize how long she'd just lain in the snow, but when she'd finally sat up, several more people had started to fill in and she couldn't help but to grin.  "All right you nerds!  It's payback time!" she called out, the woman grasping ahold of enough snow to form a ball and- with years trained in softball- delivered and underhand pitch toward Nari.

"The next one's for you!" she called toward Hirru, forming another one.

  4. The world around her seemed to move at a breakneck pace, while the young woman merely sat, unable to really...appreciate anything happening.  Her sapphire gaze stared out into the distance, not paying much attention to those around her, although admittedly she understood the fear and apprehension that surrounded the Town of Beginnings like a fog.  A mist that choked out the joy of life, leaving fear and anger in its wake.

They were all here to die, it seemed.  That was what the guy up in the air above them all had said.  None of them could log out.  The Monument continued to have more names on it each day, and she just didn't think that she could process it all.  Not right now... not ever.

There were those who were meeting together, banding into groups to go back out to the first floor and eradicate monsters, to get levels, and to push on to the exit.  Astreya felt like she wanted to join them but she was...admittedly terrified.  She'd already gotten her first taste of combat and that had left yet another name on the Monument when her boyfriend had tried to protect her.  He was the one that had gotten her into this, and she'd been too much of a coward to help him.  He'd died trying to save her.

Her eyes closed, but there weren't tears.  The game didn't simulate them.  This was all just a simulation- this world wasn't real.  None of it was, except for the fact that they were trapped here for eternity.

She wasn't quite sure what made her stand up, and she wasn't even aware of her feet taking her somewhere until she saw where she was headed.  A sweets shop, NPC run, where she and Zack had tasted some things, just to see how it 'worked' in this world.  She still had a fair amount of col, and so she simply just...got a large pie.  She wasn't even sure which flavor it was.

She didn't know how to put it into her inventory, just carrying it with her as she moved to the eatery area.  Most of the tables were full of people talking in low tones with one another, but one of them had a single individual.  Astreya didn't really take much notice of her beyond that, merely coming to sit at an open spot, the pie (which she now realized was chocolate under that mountain of whipped cream) set on the table.

She reached forth to take some, and a perfect slice came up in her hand.  The convenience sickened her a little.  "Feel free to have some if you want, since I invaded your privacy," she offered.  She could've ignored the green-haired woman but figured it'd be best to at least offer.  "One benefit of this being a game is there's no calories, I guess," she spoke, mostly to fill the silence before taking a bite.  Whether the other individual partook or not was up to them...but Astreya had no problem eating the entire pie.

  5. She felt Nari's proximity before Astreya heard the words coming from the other woman, and couldn't help but to feel like perhaps she had said too much.  Or that she'd let too much of her mask slip.  This wasn't like her, she knew, but being confronted with the potential that she might not ever get out, or that what shew as doing was somehow fruitless... it didn't really sit well with her.  There had to be an end to all of this and she would absolutely push to get out, and to make sure that as many other people made it out as well- she only wanted everyone to live the lives they wanted...back out in the real world, where it was real.

As Nari continued, she felt almost...conflicted over that.  The woman had seemed dedicated to the fact that she didn't have the same burning desire to get out anymore.  That she was content to just stay here, and live rather than chasing a shadow of a dream that she had no way to verify.

Initially, Iris wondered if Nari was communicating in the same way she had- by taking bits of dropped information from her conversational partner and weaving that into her own dialogue to ensure she was coming across as someone they'd like.  But as the violet-haired woman continued to speak, it became clear that her previous words were only part of the story.  There was a more complete picture being painted for Iris now, and she gave a hesitant nod.

"I wish I could be like you, and hold no regrets," she murmured quietly.  "I'm not strong enough to do that."

She didn't speak for several more seconds following, her head slightly bowed as she seemingly studied the ground.  Her long, dark hair covered her features, obscuring them from view as the silence lingered.  But then she drew in a breath, her fingers coming up to her hair and pulling the strands away from her face, tucking them behind her ear with a small smile.  "Sorry.  Got a little like, heavy there," she spoke, the usual energy not quite where it was.

"But thanks- it's good to know that like, at the very least I'll have one person there at the end to help me kick monster butt," she offered with a grin.  To Nari it would look like the same cheerful one she'd ever worn, but at the same time, it seemed fake, somehow?

  6. There was logic in Nari's words.  Astreya wouldn't be able to truly say that there wasn't.  And they all tickled the logical part of her brain.  The side that would analyze a chessboard and pick out the moves to take, the steps to achieve victory over an opponent.  That calm, analytic part of her mind that seemed to tear down everything before her responded in full to Nari's words.

It was the same argument that could be said of someone who was dying of a malady.  You could spend your remaining years looking for a cure that might not exist, or you could accept that was your fate, and enjoy those last years with friends, family, cultivating new hobbies and friendships.  She understood what Nari was talking about, when it came to all of this.

    And yet.

"I understand where you're coming from.  I do," Iris spoke quietly.  This was no longer a conversation between game avatars- this was something between two individuals with differing ideologies.  "But we don't... know that we don't have any hope of escaping.  We don't know what will happen if we reach the end, and I can't just quit just because the journey to get there might be hard, or just because there might be nothing at the end besides the hundred-and-first floor," she murmured quietly, her hands clenched tightly.

"I made a promise to myself.  To him.  I will get out of here, one way or another.  I don't care if I'm the only one at the end, pushing against the monsters that guard the exit.  I will not give up."

In all honesty, she didn't like Aincrad.  She didn't like this game.  She hated being trapped in here while her life passed her by outside.  She understood all the points made, that she could be living her life in here instead of just trying desperately to get back to what was back in the real world... but she didn't want that.

    She wanted out.

Even if it meant never meeting the people she'd met here in the game, she didn't think she could commit to what Nari thought about it.  She wouldn't ever come into this willingly.  Hell, she'd probably never play a game again, after this.

Astreya was about to open her mouth to respond, when she had to stop a minute to consider Nari's words.  She was right, to an extent.  It was a human that put them here, that forced them to play this death game of a sort.  Of course, by that same token, that could put a human at far, far worse than any AI that was out there, or at least, from what she knew.  Of course, she did know the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' that Nari had referenced, and she had read it, but that would go against the image that she'd carefully crafted and so it was easier to just...shy away from that.

Granted, part of her dislike of the idea of an AI also stemmed from her father, who was considerably more skilled at chess than she... and yet he had seen the computers playing it against those that would put him to shame and defeating the human players easily.  It made her frightened to think that there was something that could rationalize and make decisions far more efficiently and effectively than a human ever could.  That they would never fully understand what made a human a human.  The complexity of emotion that they felt couldn't just be... emulated, by running some subroutines, could it?

"Maybe, but like, the other side's true, right?  Like, we don't know what the goal of this whole...thing is," the woman spoke, shaking her head as she gestured around at the area around them, no matter its serene beauty.  "So if we like...okay.  So say that Cardinal doesn't really get that we're, like, totally suffering in here, right?  Even if it could like, figure that out, it might not be able to let us out, or whatever.  Or maybe it like...y'know.  It processes that there's more info to be figured out on watching us all like, run around trying to get out than it'd get by letting us out, so it keeps us here forever."  She exhaled quietly, her usual, peppy smile fading into something more akin to genuine discomfort as she looked down, the materials found there not improving her mood.

"I don't mean to be like, so negative.  I just...I want to get out of here, y'know?  Everything here is so...artificial.  I don't feel like I'm really living, while I'm in here."

  8. Between Snow and the Astr-girls, it didn't take too long to pick up the leftover dishes and trash from the main area, and before long it was looking rather nice once more.  Everything was cleaned up, leaving Astreya and Astralin without much direction on where to go next.  While the two seemingly had no problem in helping Snow continue to clean things up, once the majority of the work was done, she had shooed the two girls off to go enjoy the Onsen while she finished tidying a few other things for Baldur and bid them to go and enjoy themselves as guests here.  While there was some pushback from the blonde and brunette, before long they had agreed to just go and have some fun.

"Okay, like, maybe we'll see you later!" she called to the woman as she oriented herself on her new task, leaving the two girls to their own devices.  "So then like...onsen?" she asked, glancing to the other girl and beaming a grin toward her, even as she began to wander to where Snow had indicated they'd find it.  "And do they have like...bathing suits or are we just going in like, skinny dipping style?" she asked, mostly just seeming to think aloud rather than to have any actual investment in either side of the outcome.

    ----

The teamwork between them all was, honestly, working out great.  She had no doubt that if they continued to push and work together that they could take this thing out.  Still, Astreya was watching this creature's movements with her usual keen eye.  Oftentimes, she'd reserved that aggressive studious nature of hers for picking up how people communicated, and altering her own tonal pitches and adjustments based on what she knew, as well as her word choices, emphasis and so forth to reach an idealized version of what she felt others wanted to hear.

But for the moment, she was trying to use that against the Terra Firma, to pick out where that weakness would be, and where she should strike.  Her blade was well-balanced in her hands, and the young woman readied herself to strike, even as she saw Nari go in, followed by Jomei, the latter's rapier unable to pierce through its hide.  However, as it did, the creature was glaring death right at the fencer.

For Astreya, that was perfect as she was already moving toward the man to tank a hit for him if needed...but at the opening, she couldn't resist as she threw her weight behind the thrusting maneuver with her long, heavy blade.  It moved just past Jomei's shoulder, hidden somewhat in his shadow as the weapon ignored its armor and instead went right for its unprotected eye.

Immediately it began to screech, ripping its head back as Astreya's blade was pulled from within, and she shifted forward a step, in front of Jomei to tank a hit if needed...but it seemed it wasn't as the screech was little more than a death throe, the monstrous brute falling to the ground a second later.  Astreya blinked, before a goofy smile slid across her face.

"Like...wow!  That worked way better than I thought it was going to!" she cheered, lifting both hands up into the air in her excitement.

  10. Astreya gave a small breath as she got everything situated, even going so far as to strike at one of the other creatures that were encroaching in on her.  There weren't many of them that were left, and while she didn't have the same raw level of power that her two allies did, she could at least still do some damage, or so she expected.  The young woman wasn't exactly used to fighting enemies like this yet- usually she took one or two on at a time to keep safely away from any real threat coming toward her.

Of course, the green-haired guy to her right seemed like he'd finally had enough, and then simply began to mow through them like a lawnmower chowing down on an overgrown lawn.  She watched, somewhat in awe, somewhat in jealousy, as he took them all down, leaving nothing remaining but a spray of data that steadily began to spiral upwards and vanish in the air.  "That was like, so totally cool!" she cheered, clapping her hands after putting away her blade.

At his words though, she nodded, clenching her mailed fists tightly in her own excitement.  "Yeah!  Let's go!  If I find anything scary I'll just bring it back to you," she called as the three of them began to split up, each beginning to search down the pathways for any other Players who had been caught by these creatures.

    --

The remaining Twisted Ones were relatively few in number, leaving them without (thankfully) needing to dispatch many more before Astreya came back toward the main room with a pair of low-level characters that had just tried to start leveling themselves.  Not that she was a lot higher than them, but she still must've looked like a knight in shining armor.  "Okay!  Ready!" she called to the other two as they all arrived back in the main room.

  11. Snow time! Yule! Holidays!

Astreya was jazzed beyond jazzed at the idea of being able to romp around in the cold snow with people, and honestly the idea of doing it in a game setting like Sword Art Online was almost better somehow?

Like all of the cold and everything was simulated, you could pretty easily get warm without any real problem afterwards. The frost bite probably wasn't permanent. All of these things objectively made it better than the grand fun of playing like a child in a snow bank.

But as she arrived at the event location, she noted that there was only one other person here. She started to approach when an alert for Team B popped up in front of her face. "Team Best I think you mean," she announced to the pop-up, feeling quite proud of herself for that one.

The other person here was on Team B's side of the war field, and she grinned as she hopped forward, bereft of her usual armor, and instead she had on long gloves and tall boots of light blue, and because of the fact that she and a few others had been able to beat down that giant ice monster... She had been more naturally resistant to the cold anyway and just had on a black sundress with a scarf matching her gloves and boots.

"Heyyyyyyy! Ready to drop a glacier on the competition?" she called to the individual, nothing that she didn't recognize them... But that would change. Astreya had only met one person she hadn't befriended after all.

    (WC 265)

  12. "Oh yeah, totally!" Astreya called, giving another wide smile toward the other woman.  She and Astralin were both fairly outgoing, helpful individuals so it just stood to reason that they'd both be willing to help with this.  Of course, Astreya had already managed to pick up a few dishes before the other woman could speak and she wondered if maybe she'd overstepped her boundaries (this wasn't her home or her party at all, of course) but the other woman seemed to relax after a moment, advising them to just take stuff to the back and they'd deal with it tomorrow.

Given that this was, in fact, a game world, there was an interesting concept around 'cleaning up' in what was actually needed, but as she went to the back, Astreya began to pick up a few more things, the girl humming to herself as she followed along, approaching the back before Snow (as she identified herself) popped out afterward and Astreya couldn't help but to give a beaming smile in response.  "Hey, nice to meet you!  I'm Astreya," the girl called out, still balancing several dishes.  Astralin wasn't too far behind  her, and while Astreya didn't mind introducing her too, she knew that Astralin was about as bubbly as she was, and she made the decision to let Astralin introduce herself as she handed the stacks of plates to Snow.

"I've never been in an onsen before but like, I think that could totally be pretty fun, right?" she verified, looking between the two she was with.

    ----------------------

"It's an AI?" Astreya responded, the girl a little incredulous, despite herself.  Not really because she didn't believe Nari, but more that she really just didn't know.  "Like, putting something that can like, learn and junk and give it control and stuff.  I dunno, like, that might be, but it sounds like science fiction.  Then again," she spoke, pausing slightly as she watched Nari and the wolf both, the girl seeking to find a way to strike the beast and put an end to this fight, "this whole game kinda feels like one big science fiction thingy, sometimes," she admitted, the gears in her head starting to turn a little bit.

If Nari was correct and it was an actual AI, that... made Astreya actually a lot more uncomfortable here than she had originally expected.  The thought that she was at the whims of a person- that it was another human being pulling the strings here was awful.  That a person had forcibly put all of these people into this world for whatever reason he might have... but he was human.  He had his reasons, no matter how strange they felt to everyone else.  But an AI was... alien.  It didn't think in the same factors.  Sure it learned, but it...didn't operate the same.

"I like, know what book you're talking about but I've totally never read it," she spoke, watching Nari move, and as the woman darted forward, the wolf avoided the strike...and came right into Astreya's waiting blow, the powerful two-handed strike rending the wolf into data and casting it aside.  "But like... even if it can like, think, and like learn and even feel- it's totally not going to do those things like we do, y'know?" she spoke, not even sure if she could properly put her thoughts into words, right now.

The gears were turning in her head at an alarming pace as she tried to piece this all together in a way that she herself could understand.

    Ignoring Item Drops

    -------------------------------

The young woman gave a small breath as she shifted around, once the dogs were up and off of them again, giving her room to move and to breathe.  There was sudden movement from Nari as she began to eye up one of the other creatures, ignoring their weak attempts to snap and bite at her.  Astreya's whirlwind of frost and steel had caused her to take on most of the targeting, but that was fine.  She knew that her friend was setting up to really be a tank-like individual, but all the same, Astreya had done much the same, so the wounds she'd taken from the wolves were already healing and fading away.

But as her friend spoke, taking on an almost hoplite stance, waiting for the wolf to show its weak spot before she attacked, Astreya couldn't help but to wonder.  "But like...aren't they just coded like that?" she asked, shifting around her friend, using the cover provided by Nari's attack on the one that went down to shift, stepping around the girl and coming out from behind her.  Astreya's movements were fluid, and while she had no actual, practical experience with a weapon, being in here as long as she had- it had honed her instincts.

She spun, the movements very nearly describable as 'graceful' as the weapon was hefted high up over head before it was brought down with considerable prejudice upon one of the wolves, crushing it as much as it had cut, dropping its health bar to zero in an instant.  "But like...quest NPCs always totally act the same, right?  I've helped, like, a buncha newbies through the first quests and like, those are always the same," she mused, before a sudden curse came from her lips as the remaining wolf bit at her leg.

"Get off me you jerk!" she hissed, kicking her leg out and forcing the creature back.  But now it was down to a two-on-one.  "But yeah like.  I dunno.  I feel bad for the NPCs since they're stuck here too but like... do they even notice?  Isn't this just like, the real world to them?"

    ---------------------

Astreya glanced up over at Nari as she hefted her blade back up to a fighting position, before her gaze moved to Nemo briefly.  He seemed a little less invested in things as a whole than when she'd been here with Bismuth- but that was nothing to worry about.  If he wasn't reacting to the killing of the animals here, that just meant it was that much easier for them to get through this without incident.

As Nari finished, she went after one of the ones still standing even as Astreya gripped her weapon, ready to go in again, when Nari's words caught her off-guard.  "Lonely?" she asked, tilting her head to the side, the opening now clear for her to follow-up.  "I don't know if like... can the NPCs get lonely?" she asked, more unsure of herself than actually entertaining the thought.  She knew there were those here that really treated the NPCs like people, but... whether or not that was just a symptom of being trapped in here for so long, she didn't know.

She shifted, the movement from the fog-stained blade starting to grow as she whirled it once around herself before she actually used the weight of it to come up off the ground, slamming the weapon down amongst the throng of Mossy Wolves, creating a small radius of impact as there was the particle effects of ice and snow that came from the weapon, the one that Nari had struck staying down, even as the others leapt at her.

"Augh, back off!" she growled at the wolves, attempting to shake them off even as she backed off a bit, putting some distance in between, and giving her battle healing time to kick in.  "I'm gonna totally beat you guys into the ground!" she threatened.
