The First of Many [SP-F2](Complete)

Recommended Posts

After testing out his new shield and discovering that it was up to par, Darius would began to grind. It would be his life now that he had the means to. It was the only way he could possibly catch up to the others. Infinite grinding, over and over, for materials, Col, and skill points. It was your typical game fashion, and in reality, like life. In life, that is what you did. You ground, going to a hopeless job day after day, working endlessly for money. This and life were no different, so Darius could never complain. With that mindset, he roamed the forest looking for prospective enemies, finding them in a small clearing. A group of four bandits was just what he needed. He would crush them like he would crush everything else.

Darius cleared the treeline, stepping into the clearing. He had his weapons ready, shield raised to face the menace that stood before him. The four bandits hastily gathered themselves, jumping to their feet and confronting Darius. They called him names, threw insults, and told him they would gut him. Darius spit on the ground before them, challenging them. Being goaded, they charged forward, all four at once, and Darius stepped forward to meet them...

[After Roll Reaction:] As Darius stepped forward to meet them, the bandits fanned out, attacking him from four different spots. It seemed like he was hard pressed to defend, giving them more confidence to attack, but really, Darius wanted them to hit him. Each scored a solid hit while Darius remained defensive, not lashing out. As the bandits struck them, they found that they had taken damage in lashback thanks to Darius' thorns.

Darius laughed at the bandit's shock. They were AIs, NPCs, whatever. They weren't updated to process such things as thorns, or to properly fight or counter against it. Not that you could counter thorns. Unless you were able to kill the person in one hit, or had higher mitigation than their thorn damage. The bandits in front of him had the capability for either, so they were completely at Darius' mercy. He charged them, and like in their programming, they tried to defend themselves.

[After Roll Reaction:] As Darius charged them, the bandit he aimed for parried his attack, the rest scattering at his swinging arm, dodging the mace's blunt end and avoiding being bludgeoned.

Darius continued charging them. Their actions were basic in structure and form, and easy to follow. It was their speed that was keeping them from him. They were all armed with knives or shortswords, no armor to be thought of. They were far quicker than he as and managed to slip away from the range of his mace, alluding him and taunting as they went. They could not run forever though, and sooner or later Darius would catch one and put an end to their lives. With that respect in motion, he continued attacking, trying to catch one off guard.

[After Roll Reaction:] Yet try as he might to strike one of them, they continued to elude his reach. They were simply too quick, so Darius decided he needed to let them hit him.

Darius' temper was starting to rise and the edges of his vision started to blur. The bandits were really starting to tick him off. It wasn't even the fact that they continuously threw insults at him for not being able to hit them. It WAS because he couldn't hit them. If he couldn't hit some [censored] bandits, how would he be able to hit something of a higher tier. These were just some pathetic worms meant to be stomped underneath his foot, yet they slyly evaded decimation. With a growl, Darius intensified his attack, swinging stronger, faster, more determined. He would kill them.

[After Roll Reaction:] But Darius simply could not land a blow. They were too fast for him. If it weren't for the fact that they had gotten sick of taunting and struck him in his blind spots, the bandits probably never would have died. Instead, one by one, they killed themselves off his Thorns. In the aftermath, he got no Col, but did get 4 Materials.

Standing over the pixels of his vanquished foes, Darius spit onto what should be their corpses. It was what they got. He ground the dirt where they stood with his heel, rubbing the spit in more. He continued on. There was more to do, and he still had plenty of HP to do it with. He would find another group to fight and farm them for materials like he had the last. It was what had to be done, quite simply. It was the only way to advance in this blasphemous game created by his excellency, the creator of this world, Akihiko. With that in mind, Darius searched the forest until he came upon a group of four wolves, doing the same thing: stepping forward to meet his foe.

The wolves turned to him, barring their fangs and snarling. Darius, animal-like in his own nature, snarled back, spittle flying from his teeth onto the facemask of the helmet he wore. His anger was still palpable from the last fight and he was craving something to crush, smash, and obliterate. Nothing humiliated him more than doing terribly when it mattered, and the bandits had done just that. He had a feeling that the wolves would do the same, but without the human intelligence behind them. They just humiliated their prey so it would be easier to kill, not because it brought them enjoyment. Or did it? Darius didn't know, or care, as he charged at them and them at he.

[After Roll Reaction:] Yet this fight was so much like the last. The wolves were simply too fast for him, dodging his mace and tearing into his legs. As they attacked him they got the lashback from his thorns, taking damage. Not understanding why they took damage, they continued to try to tear Darius apart.

Watching as his HP went lower and lower, his life slowly draining as he drew closer to death, Darius decided he would recuperate after this fight. There was no reason to endanger himself when try to farm for mats, so he would search as he let his health regen. It was no biggy. He had plenty of time to spare as this battle, the search for the last, and the last had taken less than an hour. He had plenty more to spare and wouldn't hesitate to do so. Being brought back to the Aincrad, he remembered the four wolves circling him, looking hungry; like they wanted to eat him alive. Even if they killed him, he would shatter into pixels and they wouldn't be granted the chance. What a shame, he thought, as he charged them and they he.

[After Roll Reaction:] Yet in the brief scuffle that resulted, neither party landed a blow. The wolves could not get close enough to Darius to rake or bite him as he had kept them at bay with his mace, and he could not hit them with his mace as they scurried out of range like the overgrown rats they were.

Darius mumbled insults under his breath to the shaggy creatures that had no idea what he was saying. Why couldn't they just lay down and die. Why couldn't they just strike him and kill themselves off his thorns. Why couldn't they just get hit with his mace. He always fluctuated between whether or not he had the worst luck in all of Aincrad. His popular theory was that his excellency, the great creator of this world, Akihiko, decided to grant Darius with a dash of good luck only to keep him going. It always seemed like he got to do a few things right, then everything messed up for the longest of time. That was why he hated the notion of luck. Too many relied on something that wouldn't come. Or so he thought, again engaging the wolves.

[After Roll Reaction:] Almost as if reflecting on that very theory, the wolves closed in on him, attacking him from all directions. The ones that raked his sides and back simply died from the affect of thorns, while the one in front of him, while striking him, got struck with his mace in a clean blow, crushing it to the ground where it then took the thorn damage from attacking him, shattering to pixels. A notification came up saying he got 90x4 Col and 4 Materials for defeating the wolves. With a stern nod, he moved on.

Now that Darius was near half his HP, he decided it would be a good time to stop and regen some of his HP. And by stop, he means continue looking for materials. Materials was how this world ran, so that meant you always had to be getting more and more. Unfortunately there was no easy way to come by them unless you fought for them or looked for them. Looking took a great deal of time to only find a few, but fighting for them was a dangerous occupation and could end up with you dead, and all your materials being meaningless. With that in mind, Darius searched for what he could.

Yet try as Darius might, he found nothing. It did not discourage him, finding nothing. Already he had made more than he could in two days of searching and he had only been about for an hour and a half. All he needed now was a regen item and he could fight indefinetly, gaining a near constant supply of materials. What a day it would be when he could grind for fifty materials in a day. It would be wonderful, and with his determination he knew he could do it. With that many materials he could afford almost anything and have days worth of crafts. Hopeful, he continued searching.

But as the previous hour had went, Darius found nothing. This solidified is idea that when he got regen items he would just endlessly grind. It would be a simple solution to a complex problem. He wouldn't have to wait for energy to regenerate as he would use none and the regen items would always keep him at full health. He laughed to himself. A little discomfort now to avoid a great deal later was worth it. Soon he wouldn't ever have to search for materials again. That day couldn't come soon enough, and determined, he continued searching.

And may his excellency, the creator of this world, Akihiko, be praised. He was given a shred of good luck on his search, finding a material in the form of a beautiful and rare flower, which Darius picked without an afterthought. In the real world, probably every player in Aincrad would be fined. Running around killing animals, monsters, and law breakers, picking up odd and probably endangered plants, mixing together ungodly amounts of non-mixable things to see if they could make a potion. All those things brought to mind more than one charge that could be placed on someone. Laughing to himself, Darius continued looking.

Yet once again, Darius could not find resources. It was a recurring trend that managed to happen with him when he looked. He normally didn't find anything for four or five hours, find something that spiked his hopes, then didn't find anything for four or five hours. It was a terrible trend really, and whoever came up with such a trend is a terrible person. Walking through the forest was rather boring and there wasn't much to see. A tree here, a bush there, a scant patch of sun through a empty setion in the canopy. Good thing he had searching for materials to keep him occupied, and reflecting that, he searched.

And even again, for god knows how many hours in a row, Darius was unable to find a resource. It was becoming more and more dull. He almost contemplated going to battle until he was almost dead, but that would be too risky in order to get just a few mats. Maybe if it was the boss he might risk his life, but bandits and wolves weren't a boss. They weren't qualified to kill him. They weren't glorified enough to do him any real harm and that is the way it would stay. Seething with hatred for the dullness of endlessly searching for materials, Darius continued his search, hoping he might find something.

Howdy do dah, look at that though. Darius, in his extensive search throughout the forest, could find absolutely nothing that counted as a material. Not any of the dozens of things he gathered, flipped over, or thought might count as a material. This was really messed up, like a cruel joke played against him by the cruel creator of this cruel game. How hard could it be to find materials. It was literally ridiculous. You could look for five or six days and if you had bad enough luck, end up empty handed. Compared to simply fighting mobs, which guaranteed you the ability to gain materials, searching was a pathetic excuse. If it weren't for the fact that he had to regen HP, Darius wouldn't even bother searching, but he did anyways.

Darius' HP was almost back up to full. That meant he would be able to go back to fighting soon. God bless. Searching endlessly for materials and finding none was wearing thin on his patience, which was reflected in the small area of smashed trees and torn up sapling that was left in his wake. He truly and utterly was sick of looking for materials to no avail, especially since he had such a better way to farm them now but he couldn't do to health restraints. If it weren't for the fact that he had to wait for all of his equipment to be made he could be farming endlessly. He spat, cursing the cheap crafting system of the game, looking one last time for materials.

He wouldn't even mention the results of his last search. Anyone already watching could've guessed what would happen a hundred years in advance. Instead, Darius went looking for more things to kill. Things to kill was always nice, and exactly what he needed to take his seething rage and dissipate it. Crushing some skulls would do just nicely, and while reflecting on the fact that they would probably still be faster than him like before, he went and search for another group of bandits. It took him a good couple of minutes before he found any, not even hesitating or making an entrance. He simply ran in at them.

Darius wanted to smash, pulverize, decimate and crush any and all of the curr that stood before him. Continuously failing over and over again while trying to search for materials had angered him beyond reason, only because he as easy to anger. The edges of his vision blurred and an unquenchable rage filled him. The bandits used the same exact tactics as before, fan out and attack all sides. It was pathetic. Nothing ever changed. Nothing ever shifted, over and over. Such a bland life this was. Not that his life before was any better. Each had its ups and downs. Regardless, they would fight each other.

[AFTER DICE ROLL:] And a great, brief scuffle it was. The bandit that managed to be in front of Darius' mace was met with a crushing blow, caused by a critical, while the others stabbed him in the sides. The one knocked back by his attacked managed to sneak a slice in on Darius' arm before being struck. Darius thorns damaged all.

One more brief scuffle and he could finish the scraps that were before them. A real player would be startled that they had taken thorn damage, trying to avoid attacking him if they could, but these weren't real players. It was AI, NPCs, some crap program meant to try to thwart Darius. Their efforts would be useless though, as one more hit on him and they would die. Their programming made them mindlessly attack Darius, which was exactly what he wanted, despite the fact that it seemed they missed or refused to attack when he needed them to. They went at each other again.

[AFTER ROLL REACTION:] And scuffle they did. Being attacked on all sides it was all Darius could do to strike one before being hit by the bandit's shortsword, the rest of his allies stabbing Darius in the sides. All took thorn damage and all died, exploding into pixels.
