[SP-F4] Servant of the Ice - The Path of the White Knight - Part 1

Recommended Posts

It was nothing but a blizzard. Endilix held his hand in front of his face to shield himself as he trudged through the snow of the Fourth Floor. It was white as far as they eye could see. Endilix had looked at his map many times, but there was honestly no real defining markers indicating where he was or how he had gotten here. Simply put, Endilix was lost.

Now it wasn't that Endilix was all that great at finding his way around the map anyway, but matters only got worse when a freak blizzard hit the area and he had been out in the middle of nowhere training against monsters anyway. Knowing his luck, he'd end up running into the Avalanche and be in for a real fight. Endilix wasn't entirely sure he could survive an encounter like that.

And so, he continued to trudge forward, his brown armor a stark contrast to the world around him and the only color in the sea of white. And still the snow pounded him, almost willing him to stop moving and freeze to death. Despite having lived on the Fourth Floor for so long, Endilix was simply just not built for this weather. He shivered, and made the decision to look for some sort of shelter.

As Endilix made his way, a thought kept popping into his mind. How does one find shelter in a blizzard anyway? I can't even see... No matter how hard he tried, this thought kept persisting in his mind. The blizzard was so bad that Endilix hadn't even seen any monsters around. And here we was, caught in the middle of it like an idiot. Another chill ran down Endilix's spine as he tried to make out shapes in the wild wind whipping snow everywhere. But there was nothing. At least, nothing that wasn't completely covered by snow and indistinguishable from the rest of the landscape.

Endilix's feet were beginning to go numb. The shifting plates of his armor were beginning to freeze together, and were more restrictive than helpful at this point. Endilix stumbled, but kept his footing. Onwards he trudged, looking for a cave, a house, a village, anything that might indicate safety from the cold around him. Another stumble, this time, he found himself kneeling in the snow, breathing heavily. His breath came out in large puffs, as he closed his eyes and tried to regain his composure. Slowly, he managed to drag himself back to his feet, opening his eyes to see the ever increasing familiarity of the white landscape around him.

And that was when he saw movement. It was slight at first, and Endilix thought it was just the wind shifting snow dunes around him. And then it moved again, this time in a larger motion. Then, the snow dunes rose, and Endilix immediately recognized the human figures of four men. Immediately, all four had daggers at the ready, and Endilix had only a moment to ready his shield and hammer before they were upon him.

The bandits moved in a cohesive unit, circling Endilix as he readied his hammer and shield. As Endilix turned to face one bandit, another would begin to advance and Endilix would need to spin around. Not to mention they were hard to see in the whirling snowstorm thanks to their all white attire. These men knew what they were doing, and it showed.

Suddenly, without warning, they all rushed the armored man and Endilix was punctured by multiple daggers, not even being able to block one due to their sudden speed. But the bandits didn't attack without a cost. Endilix's HP dropped slightly, but he was delighted to see as the plates of his armor seemed to catch the bandits and cut them back for their attack. Their HP dropped dramatically, and Endilix knew that these guys were just chumps using scare tactics.

Endilix smiled as he whirled around and gave a battle cry, slamming his hammer into the ground and causing shockwaves to pound through the snow, striking each of the bandits in turn. Their remaining sliver of health was gone in an instant, as they cried out in pain and exploded into the familiar pixels of a dead enemy. Endilix huffed and shook his head as he sheathed his hammer and shield, and looked out into the white landscape once again. As if the blizzard wasn't bad enough, now I have to deal with bandits too? he asked himself mentally as he registered the loot window that had popped up in front of him.

Endilix looked at the loot window in front of him. There was only one item, and Endilix pulled it into his inventory, and then pulled it out into his hand. It read, "Important Note" and it was crudely written in a large, childish scrawl. It read simply, "Storm is comin. Dun let anyfin neer da hideout. Ice Sculpter cant escape." Endilix couldn't help but chuckle at the misspellings of the words in combination with the simple request. If one thing never changed, it was that bandits never were very smart.

But what was the bit about an ice sculptor? Endilix supposed it must be a quest. The bandits didn't seem like players, so Endilix must have stumbled onto something hidden out in the fields of the floor that could, potentially, lead to loot. Endilix liked the idea of that, as he scanned his surroundings. It was still white, but he figured if the bandits were protecting a hideout, there must be something near that would give him a sense of direction.

As Endilix searched his surroundings, he figured he should look over the note, just in case the bandits were stupid enough to put a map to their hideout on it. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, and so Endilix would just have to keep exploring blind. He stuffed the note back in his inventory and as he continued to trudge through the snow, Endilix could've sworn he saw a couple of torches lit up in the distance. He put his hand up to shield his face as he squinted to try to make out if his findings were correct or not. Sure enough, as his feet continued to carry him forward, there was also the outline of a small cave entrance set into a white mountain. Endilix couldn't help but smile. Easier than I thought it would be to find. Better than wandering around for hours in circles. I hope it's warm... he thought to himself as he made his way to the cave entrance.

As he got closer, the torches grew brighter against the white backdrop that was Endilix's current world. Endilix could also see some basic scaffolding built above the cave entrance and a small watchpost looking building with its own torch set close against the mountain. Endilix scanned the rudimentary wooden setups tentatively, but the wind and snow made it hard to tell if there was any danger. And then Endilix felt a gust of wind separate from the blizzard rush past his face with a "Whoosh!" Sure enough, Endilix turned to see a dagger in the snow behind him, having only narrowly missed his ear. Endilix snarled, and readied his hammer and shield, looking for the culprit.

  • 4 weeks later...

Endilix snarled as he zeroed in on the first bandit on the scaffolding. Endilix had his shield up in a defensive posture as he began to run towards the makeshift wooden structure. The snow crunched beneath his feet, and he left little piles kicked up behind him as he ran. Endilix heard a faint "Tink!" and then another, as he ran. He looked down to see two daggers in the snow, having bounced off his shield. Two bandits, at least. Endilix thought to himself as he ran.

As he reached the scaffolding, Endilix looked up to see the two men staring down at him with beady little eyes. They were fairly plump men, as haggard looking as Endilix would expect from bandits. Their clothes were torn and mismatched and their beards ragged. Endilix growled again at the two, before beginning an ascent towards them. As he climbed, the bandits pulled out a couple more daggers. But before either man could make a stab, Endilix managed to get enough of a stable position hanging off the scaffolding to ready his hammer. It glowed a dark red as Endilix readied his Sword Art. The blow knocked the bandit's knees out from under him and Endilix brought the hammer down on his head again with a sickening crunch. The bandit groaned as its HP bar dropped to half.

Endilix had been so focused on the guard he had knocked down that he hadn't been paying attention to the guard next to him, who had promptly decided to kick Endilix off of the scaffolding. Endilix received the boot to the face and in his shock lost his grip and fell with a cry, landing with a hard thud. He groaned a bit, as he rolled onto his side and got back to his feet from the decent fall, as both bandits jumped down off the scaffolding, landing catlike in front of the armored man. Armor is not good for climbing. Or falling... duly noted, he thought to himself as he readied his hammer and shield again to take on his combatants.

They each came at him, and Endilix wasn't able to block their fluid attacks as their daggers cut into his side. But he watched their HP drop as his Thorns activated, and they gave a cry as they took a step back from the man, staring at him like he was some sort of devil. Endilix grinned and took the opportunity to activate his Sword Art, his hammer glowing its signature crimson as slammed it into the ground, creating a shockwave and making one of the bandits scream to his pixelated death.

Endilix circled around with the other bandit in front of the large wooden gates to their hideout. He knew that the bandit was no danger, but he didn't want to risk the man running off and alerting his friends. He wanted to keep this one on one. But the bandit had no intention of fleeing, despite the obvious fear in his eyes. At least he has some honor, even for an NPC, Endilix thought to himself as he watched the man. Finally, he came at Endilix, but the swing was clumsy. Endilix easily parried the blow, and focused himself on the man. He zeroed in on his skull as his hammer glowed dark red, and Endilix swung his arm in two wide circles to send the bandit reeling. Endilix had managed to cause yet another sickening crunch with his blows, as the man's muffled cries from his broken jaw were all that could be heard before the shattering sound of exploding pixels.

Endilix huffed a bit as he stood in the wind and snow. It whirled around him with a howl, and he wasn't sure just how long he would be able to take it. He had two reasons for wanting to be in that cave. One, to complete the quest. And two, to stop freezing to death. The latter ended up being most important, as Endilix picked up his feet and made his way for the large wooden doors. He walked up close, and inspected the doors. They were makeshift, and appeared to be rather downtrodden. Endilix wondered if they actually kept any cold out of the cave. It was a minor solace though, as Endilix felt the warmth of the nearby torches shining on his face, and gave a light shiver from the conflicting warmth of his face and cold of his body. He gave another sigh, his air puffing out in a large cloud in front of him, as he put a hand on the door and made to push. But it didn't budge. The doors were locked.

Endilix gave a grunt as he attempted to push on the door once again. In frustration he even ended up attempting to ram it with his shoulder, but nothing gave. He gave a cry of anger as he kicked the wooden barricade. It was certainly more sturdy than it looked, and perhaps that was the impression they wished to give. Endilix turned away from the entrance and crossed his arms, trying to think if there was something he had missed. Endilix shook his head, "No key, it didn't pop up in a loot window when I killed the guards. Must be barred from the other end. I could try knocking... but that could just draw attention." Endilix continued to mumble to himself in this way, until he heard a wooden sliding sound from behind him. Endilix's ears perked up and he spun around, just in time to see a man open the door, and he looked just as confused to see Endilix standing there as Endilix was that he had opened the door. The man stood there dumbfounded for a long moment, before finally simply uttering, "Wassat? Who're you?"

Endilix didn't give the man at the door any time to react. He growled and rushed forward like a football player trying to make a tackle. The man had a split second to react, and he attempted to close the door when he realized what was happening, but Endilix had too much forward momentum. He went barreling into the door, and knocked the man onto his butt as Endilix continued to charge into the dimly lit hideout cave. It was spacious at the opening, and Endilix was a bit surprised at the size at first. And then he heard the man behind him begin to shout. "INTRUDER! WE HAVE AN INTRUDER!" he heard the man cry, and almost as if on cue, he heard tables and chairs all shuffling and being knocked over. Endilix continued to charge forth, but he wasn't fast enough, as three men jumped out in front of him with wide grins on their faces. Endilix cursed under his breath as he screeched to a halt, and readied his hammer and shield. He started to back away, before bumping into the man who had been behind him. Endilix turned as the man glowered down at him, a large smile forming on his face as well. There was a single gold tooth shining in the mouth of the larger pot bellied man. "An' jus' where do ya think yer goin' little pest? Ain't nobody knocks me on my ass and gets away wit' it."

Endilix sighed and looked around him at the men circling him. He had hoped to be fast enough to get into the stronghold and avoid most combat, but considering the way he had barged in, it had probably been too much to ask for. He shrugged, and rolled his shoulders, as he waited to see what the bandits would do. The large man was the first to come in, seemingly the leader of the small group. He held in his hand a whip and he cracked it, a fierce frown on his face. He clanged his whip against Endilix's shield, as Endilix managed to block each of his blows entirely. The other bandits tried to come in for blows with their daggers as they saw the opportunity, but Endilix was able to turn the blades with his hammer. Endilix grunted, tired already from this fight of 4-on-1 and readied himself to go on the offensive.

The large man with the whip was relentless in his onslaught, continuously sending the whip down on Endilix's shield, until he was beginning to wear down. Endilix was being beaten down so relentlessly by the man that his HP bar was actually beginning to suffer the effects of the blows, as he watched it begin to tick down. Taking advantage of Endilix's worn down state, the other thieves came in to cut into Endilix's armor, and he simply wasn't able to turn the blows in time, as he was too focused on the large man beating down on him. The only solace Endilix was able to take from the situation was the HP drain caused by his Thorns buff on each of his attackers, but they didn't seem to care. Endilix made a poor swing as he made to continue blocking each of the large man's blows, but it was entirely ineffective, as his breathing began to get heavy.

Endilix steeled himself, and attempted to dig his feet into the dirt of the cave against the man's blows, but they were relentless, and Endilix could gain no ground. But he used his position to gain a bit of favor, as the whip tirelessly clanged against the shield like a bad drum beat. Endilix was more ready for the outlying bandits this time, as he swung his hammer in an attempt to retaliate, instead of just turning their blades. The bandits all seemed to back off, letting their leader continue his onslaught realizing that Endilix was more alert than tired. Endilix just shook his head, and growled at the man banging on his shield. The large man simply cried out in return, and the relentless banging kept on ringing throughout the cave.

Endilix couldn't take much more of this man and his incessant whipping. He seemed tireless, and there was no break in his constant onslaught. Endilix was able to keep himself in a position to keep the bandits at bay, and they seemed fine with watching from the sidelines as their leader continue to pound away at the man's shield. But Endilix had had enough, as his hammer began to glow a bright, dark red. He gave a cry, and while the thieves made an attempt to get out of the way, Endilix managed to catch a break between whippings to slam the hammer into the ground. He huffed as he watched the dust settle, and while the thieves seemed fairly shaken by the blow, the large man with the whip only gave a laugh that resonated deep from his gut. "It's gon' take more than that, boy," he said, as his HP bar barely dropped a tick. And the thieves began to converge once more as Endilix cursed under his breath.

Endilix growled at the large man as he was taunted. But he wouldn't be goaded into being stupid. Endilix waited for the large man's onslaught to resume, but instead the portly man simply smacked his large belly and said, "C'mon boy. Gimme yer best!" Endilix was happy to oblige as the den thieves watched on in silence, their leader taking the reigns of the battle for his own. Endilix's hammer glowed dark red once more, as he brought his hammer around in two heavy blows into the man's gut, and he heard the man give an "Ooof!" with each smash. But once all was said and done, and Endilix took a step back, the man simply gave a guttural laugh once again and said, "That almost tickled!" Endilix simply growled again as the thieves joined in the laughter.

Endilix couldn't even make a dent in the man that was challenging him, and he made it clear. The only reason that Endilix had managed to be successful was because of his Thorns buff, but did he truly expect these thieves to be dumb enough to break themselves upon Endilix? The answer came at the laugh of the large pot-bellied man as he readied his whip and said, "C'mon boys, let's show 'im how true men fight!" And then they all converged on him at once, slashing and whipping, and it was all Endilix could do to back away. While his health still only marginally dropped, it was the stress of the onslaught that truly got to him, with multiple enemies all wailing on him at once.

But it wasn't without a cost, as the three thieves all gave a cry as Endilix's thorns buff kicked in and they exploded in a shower of pixels. The large pot-bellied man simply gave another guttural laugh as his HP dropped once more. "Useless dregs. Don't think I don't understand what's goin' on here, boy," the man said waving his whip at Endilix. "You got that magic fancy armor, that does damage when we hit it. I getcha. Can't even fight like a man."

And before Endilix could give a retort, the large man pulled out a smoke bomb, and threw it at the ground, as smoke filled up the chamber that they stood in. Endilix coughed at the smoke, and tried to keep an eye on the man in the fog, but doing so burned his eyes and all he saw was the water filling his vision.

Endilix gave an angry snarl as the smoke cleared and he looked around for the portly man. But, as Endilix expected, he was nowhere to be seen in the dimly lit open chamber of this thieves den. Endilix gave a cry of frustration as he threw his hammer to the ground. It landed with a hard thud and he looked around, waiting for more thieves to pop out. But none came. "He was probably the leader..." Endilix muttered to himself, "and I couldn't even finish the job." Endilix cursed the idea that the only reason he was successful was because of his Thorns buff, and it appeared that even NPCs were sometimes smart enough to not kill themselves on it. Endilix slowly made his way over to his hammer, looking it over with a sigh. "I need more power in my swing. I'll have to look into better skills."

Endilix mulled over his weakness as he hefted his hammer. For as sharp as the spikes on his hammerhead were, he would get nowhere dealing damage if he didn't invest properly. Endilix supposed he was in a good place with his tanking. He didn't die, and that was a start. But he would need to have offensive power. What good was a tank if they only didn't die? Sometimes Endilix would be alone, and he'd need to make sure he could defend himself in Aincrad with offense. Not to mention his Thorns wouldn't get him everywhere, especially if NPCs were capable of free thought to the point of running away. Endilix plopped down into a nearby chair with a sigh. "I still have a quest to do. I hope. But I'm so drained after that fight. He did no damage... but it was so tiring just continuously getting beaten on..." he muttered to himself.
