Once again the ginger giant known as Mack found himself up on the fourteenth floor running through the castle he had previously found. Apparently, since his last visit, the computer had decided to beef up the security. As the axe man approached the gate, the gold band of Grandmaster's Honor flashing at his right ring finger and the bearded axe Invictus being carried in an easy grip in his hands, a squadron of green cloaked undead knights came flooding out from beneath the raised wrought iron portcullis of the castle. Even as the mobs were raising their swords and spears to attack, Mack was already in motion charging across the gap separating them as Explode Catapult triggered from his list of sword arts. The bearded axe flashed and did its deadly work as one by one the knights were reduced to pixels.

OOC: For this thread, Trooper's Respite and Grandmaster's Honor are going to be rotating back and forth between At Ready and Equipped.

With the four green cloaked knights having been dispatched, Mack knelt on the ground and retrieved a simple leather satchel with his winnings from the fight. An extra two thousand col and fourteen crafting materials were always useful things to find. It would have been nice to find some really good gear, the problem was that the best gear drops really only came from boss level monsters, which was unfortunate, but it did make sense. Pulling up his at ready items, Mack tapped the ring on his finger and the boots in his inventory. It was time to give the energy recovery boots a test to see how they did. While he waited for the recovery effect to kick in, Mack surveyed the area for any materials he might have missed.

Moving about the area of the castle that was just outside of where the portcullis could slam down, Mack scoured the area. There had to be a few materials scattered around the outside of the castle's courtyard. It would just take a few monster free minutes to locate them. That was all. Moving slowly, and occasionally jabbing at things with the butt cap of Invictus, Mack probed the ground all around the outside of the castle. Just when he was about to give up on finding anything and proceed through the open gate and into the castle proper, Mack's ears heard the distinctive metallic clunk of metal on metal, stooping quickly, the bearded man added the crafting material to his inventory.

Glancing up at his energy bar Mack grumbled a series of oaths about the recovery boost that Trooper's Respite supposedly had. So far, the boots didn't seem to be helping with his energy recovery one bit. At least not so far as the red headed behemoth could tell. Muttering a few more choice words about boosts and their lack of working the way he wanted them to work, Mack pulled up his at ready items and swapped out Trooper's Respite for Grandmaster's Honor as he continued to search for any loose crafting materials that might be hanging around just at the base of the castle's gate and walls.

Moving along the base of the wall, Mack eventually made his way back to the gate. Occasionally, the butt cap of Invictus would shoot out and tap or clank against the walls of the castle. So far, there hadn't been much that had come of doing that, but at least it was an attempt to find crafting materials. Moving slowly into the narrow gate corridor itself, Mack checked his surroundings carefully and listened closely for the sounds of either footsteps, drawn bow strings, or boiling pitch. Almost every castle in the history of ever had murder holes in the gate area that would allow archers to shoot down into advancing troops or other defenders to pour nasty boiling liquids all over advancing soldiers and Mack had no desire to be caught in such a deluge.

Making his way quickly through the gatehouse and beneath the portcullis lest it should come crashing down suddenly upon him, Mack was moving with considerably greater foot speed and noise than was prudent when traveling by himself in a castle that he knew to be inhabited by the green cloaked undead knights that seemed to be everywhere on this floor. Therefore, it was no surprise to him when a quartet of the mobs appeared at the far end of the gate house corridor. Drawing Invictus back over his right shoulder, Mack charged down the gatehouse towards the four green cloaked knights. As he neared the group Invictus flashed out and one by one each of the skeletal warriors was felled by its blade.

With more of the undead knights having been dispatched, the bearded behemoth stopped in the center of the circle where, just seconds ago he had been surrounded by skeletal warriors. Kneeling in on the dusty cobble stoned floor of the outer courtyard, the red headed man added the loot that he had gained from killing the green cloaked figures to his inventory. There, that wasn't so bad. He'd only just begun his farming run and already he was nine materials and more than four thousand col to the positive. Definitely not a bad way to get things started, not even slightly. Pulling up his at ready inventory, Mack again swapped out Grandmaster's Honor in favor of the energy retrieval boost that was offered by Trooper's Respite. Maybe this time the boots would actually do something.

Moving slowly around the courtyard, Mack tapped at various of the slate grey cobble stones with the forged carbon steel butt cap of his bearded axe, Invictus. A tap here. A tap there. A tap way over in that corner. All that he was managing to turn up was a whole lot of nothing. To make matters more aggravating, his recovery enhanced boots did not seem to be giving him anything to work with at all. Did recovery actually do anything other than increase the sale value on a piece of armor. It would have been a great skill if it ever activated to give him the energy recovery boost that the enhancement claimed to have. Right now, though, the boots were increasingly looking like they were junk.

The ginger giant known as Mack continued working his way through the outer courtyard, slowly searching for crafting materials while he waited for his energy bar to fully replenish itself. These boots enchanted with the recovery enhancement really were utter garbage. "I don't know if I've ever made a bigger piece of garbage than these damned boots," Mack grumbled to himself, cursing the boots underneath his breath even as he was pulling up his at ready list of items. Tapping through the handful of items he quickly removed the Trooper's Respite and replaced them once more with the Grandmaster's Honor ring.

Sighing, Mack decided it was time to move on from the outer courtyard, obviously there wasn't going to be anything worth finding to find in the courtyard among the paving and cobble stones. So, it was time to move on to find some more of the undead knights to slaughter. Moving slowly to the gateway that separated the outer courtyard from the inner courtyard, Mack stopped and considered what waited in the second of the courtyards that was just before the doors that led into the castle itself. Standing there, flanking the door, was another squad of the green cloaked guards. "No time like the present," Mack grumbled, stepping into the open and charging across the open space as he activated Explode Catapult. Within a few seconds, it was all over.

Kneeling in the spot where all the green cloaked knights had, only so recently, been standing, Mack wrapped the fingers of his left hand around the bag of loot and eyed it. The haul was definitely starting to get better, there was no denying that. This leather bag was considerably heavier than the previous one had been. Tapping the bag, the blacksmith added the contents consisting of col and crafting materials to his inventory before standing up. Swiping a finger in the air in front of him, Mack again swapped out Grandmaster's Honor in favor of Trooper's Respite. Eventually the boots would have to do something, surely they couldn't be completely useless. Surely.

Moving slowly around the inner courtyard of the castle, which was dominated on one end by intricately carved mahogany doors that led into the castle proper, Mack slowly scanned his surroundings. If he was patient and looked around long enough, he should be able to at least come away from this area with another crafting material to use in smithing. Slowly the massive man made his way around the exterior wall that denoted the courtyard's boundaries, occasionally tapping at the rigid stone walls with the butt cap of Invictus. Eventually, all of the probing and searching paid off as one of the walls stones dislodged itself and fell to the ground with a thud. Kneeling, Mack tapped it with his finger. Sure enough, it was a crafting material and he added it to his inventory.

After adding the crafting stone to his inventory, Mack glanced up at his energy bar. It had been long enough that the bar was about three quarters full. Then, all of a sudden, the bar shot forward to being completely full again. "About damn time," the axe man muttered to himself, swiping a finger in front of him and pulling up his at ready inventory. Once again, Trooper's Respite disappeared to at ready status as Grandmaster's Honor was re-equipped. With his gear once again set for combat, the red headed behemoth made his way over to the carved wooden doors that led into the castle, crossing through the inner courtyard.

Stepping up to the intricately carved doors, this close Mack could make out that the design seemed to be one of Nordic origin of all things, Mack stopped just far enough back from the doors to be able to kick them wide open. With a growl, the hulking man put reared back and kicked the doors as hard as he could about where he thought the latch would be. As the doors flew backwards with a resounding slam as they impacted the far wall four green cloaked undead warriors looked up. Even as they glanced in the direction of the intruder, Mack was already moving, charging forward and readying Invictus to strike. Once again, the combat was brief and violent and ended with four more green cloaked warriors having been defeated.

Once again, Mack dropped two one knee in the midst of the area where he had again dispatched a foursome of undead green cloaked enemies. With his right hand wrapped around the haft of Invictus, Mack plucked up the four crafting materials from the kills. Standing back up, he tapped through his at ready items and equipped Trooper's Respite to replace Grandmaster's Honor. Finally, the boots' damn enchantment worked right, and his energy shot straight up into a more acceptable zone. Craning his neck back, Mack considered his surroundings for a moment, taking in the high vaulted ceilings, columns, and walls that were covered in intricate friezes depicting hunting and pastoral scenes.

Mack had just given up on checking all of the pillars of the room for loose crafting materials as a bad job when the sound of doors being thrown open at the other end of the hall caught his attention. Mack's head snapped around to the sight of four green cloaked undead knights as they shoved the doors open and came streaming into the entry hall, tattered cloaks flapping from the rapidity of their approach. Well, if they were intent on marching to their deaths, who was the ginger giant to argue with that logic. Drawing Invictus back over his right shoulder, Mack charged them down and delivered a series of punishing blows to each until they were nothing more than free floating atoms.

Finishing the fight with the freshly spawned knights in their tattered emerald cloaks, Mack peered at his energy bar through narrowed eyes. One lousy energy point. Oh well, at least he had managed to refill the bar far enough to deal with the knights when they had spawned all in one fell swoop instead of piecemeal, or having to use energy boost items. That would have been embarrassing, not that anyone else would have ever found out about it. That would not have been a story that the giant red-head would have been willing to share. Kneeling on the spot, he secured the crafting materials and col that the mobs had dropped, adding them to his inventory. Maybe the recovery boosting boots weren't so worthless after all.

Wandering around the entrance hall, Mack kept a wary eye on his energy bar. In its current almost depleted state he was a bit vulnerable at the moment, though his armor could more than handle the attacks from the green clad knights if more of them spawned. As he moved he noticed that his energy was also recovering more speedily than it normally did. Perhaps the recovery enhancement was somehow tied into how depleted the energy bar actually was. It definitely seemed that he was getting greater benefits from the boots at the moment. Slowly, Mack checked the entrance hall for any hidden crafting materials and, finding nothing, the ginger giant grew angry. If he couldn't find a crafting material, he would simply make one. Wrapping his hand around a torch bracket the blacksmith gave an almighty heave and wrenched it free from the wall. There, one crafting material. Sort of.

"Well, that worked so well let's try it again," Mack muttered to himself, still holding the golden torch bracket in his hand for a moment before adding it to his inventory. Looking around with dark flashing eyes, the axe man finally spotted what he was looking for. It would bring every guard in the whole damn castle running, but if had to give him a crafting material. It just had to. If a torch bracket was good, surely and entire chandelier was infinitely better. Moving to the wall where the chandelier was secured, Mack promptly swung Invictus into the anchor rope and gravity did the rest. Down came the glittering chandelier with an almighty crash and in seconds Mack was right there pawing through the wreckage in search of a crafting material. Sure enough, he hefted the body of the chandelier and added it to his inventory. Apparently, he wasn't being destructive enough in his ordinary environmental material searches.

Sure enough, if you severed the anchor rope on a chandelier in an castle that was controlled by computer generated characters and allowed the chandelier to go crashing to the ground it would cause enemies to spawn. In this case, a quartet of green cloaked undead knights. Mack, however, had accurately predicted that outcome and he was ready for it. As the guards came streaming through the doors at the far end of the hall, the red-headed man was already charging towards them with Invictus at the ready. Leaping into the air, Mack came down in the midst of the knights, a shock wave of force slamming into them seconds before the heavy bearded axe robbed them of their remaining health points, reducing the monsters to pixels.
