[SP-F6] Not as Calm as The Brochure Said... <<Calming the Soul>> COMPLETE

Recommended Posts

There was a quest in Aincrad that seemed to vanish. Either the system got rid of it, or people just stopped taking it. Its name was just gone from people's mouths for the longest time. All of a sudden, however, people started to talk about it again in large numbers. When it was first around, Jomei had ignored it. However, from what he heard others talking about, it seemed as though the quest was now more difficult, and proved much more of a challenge. Jomei did not care about what the others were saying though, what the quest entailed and what the reward was. All Jomei truly cared about was the name.. 'Calming the Soul.'

During the rescue of Piera and Lee from the unknown group on Floor Four, Jomei needed to take drastic measures in order to complete that mission. An attempt to simply stun a guard had gone terribly, and Jomei ended up needed to end that man's life in hopes of getting back without being caught and surviving. He knew the guard he killed was a player killer, and had done more than Jomei had.. but to him he was still a living person with a family on the outside, waiting for him. And Jomei took him away from them.

He took in a shaky deep breath as he continued forward through the rain forest on Floor Six.

On top of that, two of his friends were gone. Murdered by two of his other friends that he had once held in high regard.. though apparently one of them was being used as a pawn, and did not have any control over what he did. That made it worse for him though, that one person, Opal, who he was once very close with, had gone and betrayed all of them, betrayed his friendship and trust.

He clenched his fists and grit his teeth at the memory.

But what killed him the most now was the news he had learned from Opal during their last meeting.. After the boss fight. After the deed had been done. Opal had taken advantage of Jomei during an emotional, drunken night, which made him completely willing to it. He did not remember what had happened the morning after, but when Opal repeated it, the memories rushed back to him of the night. He was disgusted in himself, which added another reason as to why he needed to take this quest. Before he loses himself completely and causes any harm to himself..

Jomei heard the sound of rushing water from just beyond the foliage in front of him. Stepping forward and pushing the green filled branches out of the way, his eyes fell upon a waterfall. He scanned the water fall, looking from where the water fell and the trees that surrounded it, down to where it fell over rocks and boulders gently without splashing about, and finally into a pool that was crystal clear, unlike any other river he had seen on this floor. According to the quest description, this must be the place he needed to be. In the center of the pool, led there by small stepping stones, was a large flat rock. The surface was covered with a green moss, and looked dry, completely untouched from the water around it. Slowly, the man crossed the stones and stood on the mossy rock, before sitting down with his legs crossed.

Immediately, Jomei felt a relaxing sensation pass through his body. All of his muscles loosened as he slowly exhaled. The lids of his eyes gently shut, cutting off his vision entirely so he could put more focus on his other senses. He listened to the sound of the water falling into the pool, and felt the cool mist that surrounded the area on his skin. The smell of the green trees and buses around him, a refreshing sensation. And in an instant, it was all gone. Replaced by.. nothing. Jomei opened his eyes to see that he was no longer sitting in front of a waterfall in the forests of Floor Six. He did not know where he was now, and it did not look like anything in this area.

He now sat on a marble floor, the tiles were large and created the square room. Above him, were rafters that held up the ceiling, creating boxes that ran the same way the tiles on the floor did. through the smaller boxes within the rafter's created by caging of some sort, Jomei saw a jade colored ceiling. Bringing his eyes back down, he saw that the room was being held up by tall black bars, running around the entire perimeter of the strange room. They seemed almost prison cell like, though they were spaced out enough for Jomei to easily walk through.

Jomei stood up and looked around at the room he was in. "Where.. am I?" He walked forward towards the edge of the room where the tiles ended. As he got closer, he noticed that it was raining.. only it was not just raining. It was more like a monsoon, his visibility was cut off by the heavy rain and winds, and the sky, as far as he could see, was dark. Looking down, he noticed that it was a straight drop down into nothingness. Why did he not hear the sound of the rain earlier? He stepped backwards towards the center once again, and the sound of the storm subsided, as if it was not raining at all.

Once he stood back in the center of the room, Jomei looked down towards his feet, shocked by what he saw. On the ground, extended about six feet out in front of him, was his shadow, staring back at him. The strange thing about it was that there was no light to create it. Jomei's eyes widened and he gasped when the shadow began to move on its own and climb out of the ground to stand in front of him. Jomei only looked in horror as the figure, that took the exact same shape as Jomei, only pitch black, stared at him with a single, small white circle for an eye.

Slowly, the shadow figure raised its arm up to the side, its palm facing upwards as if gesturing Jomei to something. Moments later, from the ground, four large door grew and stood tall, each one having a different look to it.The first door Jomei recognized almost immediately, for it was made of a dark iron, white specks of snow covered the surface as if pelted by a blizzard. It was the front entrance to the PK group's stronghold on Floor Four. The door next to it was made of an unfinished wood, with spider webs taking up the top corners. The third, was a deep crimson door with black accents. The designs engraved into the wood almost looked like eyes that were crying. The final door was just a regular door, but the shadow man stood in front of it, grinning an eerily wide smile. The shadow's open hand switched to a finger extended forward, pointing directly at the first door.

As if pushed forward. Jomei found himself standing directly in front of the door, despite not moving his legs at all. His hand was also placed on the iron, ready to push it open. He took a deep breath before putting his weight against the entrance and pushing the door open. Immediately, Jomei felt the cold wind pelt at his face as the blizzard's winds tried to push through the door that he had just opened. Once he had managed to close the door behind him, he turned and shielded his face from the storm and saw the tall castle from Floor Four. Jomei began to hear the sound of grunting, as if two men were in the middle of a fight. As he turned his head, he found himself transported again to just outside of the castle window. He was left to watch two men wearing the same clothing struggling to their weapons in the snow. It did not take much for him to know that this was where he killed that guard.

He wondered, what if he could stop it? What would happen if he stopped himself from killing the other man... could that be what he needed to bring redemption to his soul? Digging his boot into the snow, Jomei ran forward with a hang extended. He hoped to jump in between the two and stop himself from killing the other guard. Jomei placed his hand on his copy's shoulder, seconds before the rapier pierced through the body of the guard. Jomei could see the sadness and regret in his own eyes. Everything had frozen, except for himself.

From the top of the castle dropped a large black figure that was balled up as it hit the snow. Slowly, it straightened its body out to reveal just how tall it was. The entity wore a ragged, hooded black robe and stood about 7 feet tall. In its hand, it held a large scythe that was even taller than the cloaked figure itself. As it stepped forward towards Jomei, its face was revealed to be a skull.

The tall skeleton began to slowly walk forward, dragging its scythe along with it in the snow. Jomei looked over his shoulder to see that the image of himself and the guard were still there, and beginning to proceed forward in time at a slow pace. Jomei turned back to the grim reaper-like enemy and saw that it was now standing directly in front of him, the jawless skull it had for a face staring him in the eyes with its cold, dark eye sockets. With a twist of its body, the scythe was cutting through the air on a direct course to Jomei. Thanks to his high levels in evasion, the Irishman ducked under the impending decapitation, the weapon slicing a thin ginger hair off of Jomei's head. In the same instant, Jomei had pulled his rapier out and jabbed it forward, using his Neutron skill. As his sword collided with the bony body, another four gold lights pierced through the reaper's robe, and the fight was finished.

Jomei popped back up to a standing position as the remaining crystals from the skeleton rained to the snow around him. It was a strangely simple fight... the Grim Brother did not have high health at all, or any armor. He did not even need to use his strongest sword art to take it out, and used a fairly low leveled one in its stead. With a sigh, the Irishman turned around one last time, to see if his vision's rapier had pierced the guard yet. He was shocked to find that nothing was there. No Jomei, no guard, not even any traces of the two being there in the first place. Placing a hand on his chest, Jomei felt a sort of relief, like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. It was.. bizarre. As he picked his head back up, he found himself back in the empty room. "Huh..?" he said to himself softly, turning around to see that the first door was now gone, leaving the other three standing  behind the shadow man.

Jomei  stood, looking at his shadow for a couple of moments. He figured this was all part of the quest.. but it was strange. It reminded him of the Gemini quest he took a long time ago.. but this was different. This was diving into his memories as if acting as a third person. He crossed his arms, not breaking contact with that one eerie white eye. "So I'm guessing that ones next." he said, gesturing at the second door with the spider webs. The shadow did not reply, only stared back. However, once Jomei turned his eyes to the door once again, he was standing directly in front of it. The Irishman scoffed at how bizarre this whole thing was. He placed his fingers in the small crack in the center of the door, pulling the door open enough for him to walk through.

The man let out a heavy sigh as he took in his surroundings and remembered where he was now. The room he was in was dark, with many familiar faces scattered about. He continued to walk forward towards the vision of himself, which was currently talking to Zandra, his eyes kept on the entrance to the cavern. Standing next to himself, he waited for the blonde haired man that would start the whole show. As if on cue, the vision of Oikawa charged in from around the corner, darting straight to Zel. All he knew was that he needed to stop Oikawa so he could clear this door as well. Quickly, Jomei sprinted forward so that he could intercept Oikawa's run. Tapping him on the shoulder, the image froze, just as it had earlier. But no.. that was not all. He had nearly forgotten about the one hiding in the shadows. Turning his attention to Ssendom, Jomei noticed the familiar woman wearing white and crimson emerging from the darkness. Using his charge skill, Jomei rushed towards the woman as fast as he could. The visions were moving slower than usual, but not slow enough. Just as Opal's katana touched Dom's shoulder armor, Jomei grabbed the blade, stopping the woman's attack. "Alright.. now wheres this door's boss..."

With a creaky groan, the door to the alleged boss room opened slowly. The Irishman turned his body to look at what was causing it to do so. From the open crack in the door, a long slender arm with a black sleeve poked through, wrapping its cold, dead fingers around the door. The skin on this boss looked slightly more alive, rather than just a skeleton like the last one. Once the door was open enough, the entity came through and revealed itself to Jomei. Similar to the last fight, this enemy wore a long black robe, this one tighter to its body to show its slender, female figure. Its face was not a human face, it was more profound with ram horns sticking off of the sides. It, like its brother before, wielded a large scythe, though this one was more jagged and serrated. Jomei ripped his rapier from its scabbard and walked towards his new enemy.

Jomei's walk turning into a jog, and then into a sprint as he rushed forward at the tall cloaked figure that just stood there, mockingly. As his body lowered to the ground with his run, he pulled his blade back so it was ready to pierce forward at any moment. Now only feet away, Jomei jabbed his rapier at the scythed-creature; it's body curved around the rapier and disappeared in smoke. A chill went down his spine as he felt its presence staring at him from behind. Without turning to look, Jomei dove forward and hit the ground with a roll. Behind him, all he heard was the sound of the metal weapon crashing into the ground.

The swordsman quickly spun around and placed himself in a crouched position, one palm pressed to the floor as his body came to a halt from his roll. He watched as the dust settled around the cloaked woman, where her scythe had collided with the stone floor. He saw that it had gone deep into the earth, creating cracks around the point of impact. Easily, the Grim Sister pulled its weapon from the ground and pointed it forward at Jomei.

He would end this just as quickly as the latter fight.

Raising up to his feet, Jomei did a quick backwards handspring before landing in a runners position. Pushing off his back foot, Jomei ran forwards with his <Charge> skill. His sword began to glow gold as he took off like a bullet, a cloud of dust kicking up behind him as he shot forward, his body looking like to blur. His rapier, as well as his body, pierced straight through the tall boss, creating a gaping hole in its chest, red and white lights around the rim. With a mumbled groan, the body collapsed and shattered as it hit the floor. Jomei flipped his body around and landed on the floor.

Once Jomei hit the ground, he spun his body around to see that everyone in the room was gone. All of the players who were waiting for access to the boss' lair, vanished, leaving Jomei as the the only one in the room. He closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh. "Why?" he spoke out, as if someone else were in the room with him.

As he turned once again, he opened his eyes. He was in the room with the four doors, now two, once again. He was speaking to the shadow who guarded the doors.  It stood there, still with that same expression on its face, tilting its head to the side like an animal trying to understand what was just said to it. "Is this really what it is going to take to cleanse myself of these.. nightmares? Living through them all over again?" As he asked his question, he felt another weight lift from his shoulders. More regret from not doing anything to protect Dom and Zel, or avenging their deaths, faded away. Of course, that bit of regret would always be there.. but it did not eat away at his mind anymore.

A small breath of air slowly escaped from his lips, carrying some of the stresses that kept him up at night with them. His question for the shadowed gatekeeper would remain unanswered with words, as Jomei simply looked at it with an understanding glare. There were still two more doors that Jomei needed to clear to finish this quest, and hopefully clear his mind. As he stepped towards the door that stood third in line, he felt his body freeze, and his eyes shot to the shadowed man, who had now appeared in front of him. It had one finger up, waving back and forth as if telling Jomei that his choice was incorrect. It would seem Jomei's next door to enter would be the one that seemed to have nothing special about it, aside from... a golden number three on the door. How had he not noticed it before? With a heavy weight in his gut, Jomei grabbed the door handle and slowly turned it.

The Irishman pushed open the mahogany door and emerged into a dimly lit inn room. He stood on the opposite side of the front entrance, the door in perfect view to see when the past version of Jomei would step through and into a world of regret he would easily forget for awhile. On the bed next to him, laid the curvy woman, wearing only her undergarments, a site that would normally swoon any man, made Jomei sick to his stomach. With a scowl as if smelling something horrid, Jomei turned away to look at the door, where he saw himself step in. Jomei felt his heart drop when he saw the look on his own drunk face. At first, it almost seemed as if he did not want to do this, but there was also an uncertainty in his eyes. With his hands in his pockets, Jomei walked forward towards himself, already knowing that seconds later, Opal would spring from the bed and close the door behind Jomei. As the woman rushed forward, the Irishman placed a finger on Opal's forehead as she reached for the door. "Not this time.." he said softly, glaring into her lustful eyes.

He looked around the room, expecting the next boss to come from the shadows. Yet nothing stirred. He turned and walked out into the hallway of the inn and looked left and right. Nothing out of the ordinary.. expect.. The hallways were longer, endless even. Rooms lined the walls for what seemed miles, usually only about six rooms after number three. He looked back and forth, the same on each side of him. The lights then flickered, and he saw another dark entity at the end of the hall. It was not nearly as tall as the last two he had fought, in fact, it did not look similar to those two at all.  It was a woman, her hair looked like long white webs, stained with blood. Her clothing was dark and revealing, her bare legs slipping through the slits in her dress with each step. She stared at Jomei with bedroom-like eyes, a long tongue licking at her lips. She stopped walking forward and began to laugh as eight long, bony spider legs emerged from her back. The end of each leg a long scythe like weapon. As they pressed into the ground and walls, she was lifted up so her bare feet longer touched the floor.

The spider like woman placed her dainty hands on her chest, her eyes looking over Jomei, her mouth only slightly open. The lustful woman seemed like she did not want to attack, but more to charm Jomei and cause him to give into her temptations. Jomei smirked, pulling his rapier from its scabbard and spinning it in his hand. "I already saw what happens when I give into my lust.. so thats not going to work on me." he pointed at the door next to him with the number 3 on it.

His sword began to glow a gold aura before he Charged forward, he rapier dragging on the wood floor as he ran. The woman held her ground, her legs dangling as six of her spider legs jabbed into the walls and ceiling around her, leaving her two "front" legs tapping on the floor beside her. Once Jomei was feet in front of her, the woman's sensual face turned to a crazed grin with a shrill scream, stabbing her scythe-legs at Jomei. Easily, he sidestepped the two attacks before crashing his shoulder into the woman's abdomen. The shock knocked her down from the wall and back onto the floor. As her feet touched the ground again, Jomei caught her in his own trap and initiated his Over Radiation. His blade cut into the woman multiple times before she let out a pained moan and fell to the ground, her body turning into white crystals.

Jomei loosened the grip on his rapier so it hung on the tips of his fingers. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath before opening them once again. As he expected, he was standing in the mostly empty room just again. He noticed something oddly different though that he had not noticed his past two trips here. The sky outside of the room. Before, it was completely blurred and white until he walked to the edge and saw it was storming. Now, there was no longer a storm, no rain, no wind. The skies were gray, but he could see outward over fields of wet grass, met then by endless forest. His mind felt more at ease than ever this past month, but he knew he was not finished just yet. His eyes jolted over to the last door that stood there, the shadow man no longer guarding it. What did it mean? The Irishman walked up to the door without being forced this time and opened it.

The door.. was empty. There was no new room on the other side. It led straight back to the room he had been standing in moments ago. The only difference, was the shadow. It was stained in the door way just as Jomei was, looking curiously from the other side. His stance seemed much more human like and sane, rather than slouched over and staring soullessly. Now it seemed to be just like what it once was; a shadow. Slowly the shadow man raised his hand, so his palm was open and facing Jomei. Before Jomei could react, he was sent flying backwards, tumbling on the ground. Quickly, he regained his composure and slowed his sliding to look at the thing that had just pushed him.

The shadow grabbed at the sides of the door and stepped through. As it entered Jomei's side of the door, the shadow's skin began to move about like pitch black flames, its eyes and eerie smile doing the same, just white. It held its hand out to the side once again, this time, shadows snaked around his arm and extended outwards, creating a long pitch black scythe. It stared at Jomei with lifeless eyes before rushing forward at him.
