[SP-F8-NK] Contemplations of a Broken Mind

Recommended Posts

Having decided to take a day to explore a new floor, Nikodemus awoke early and left his shop, locking it down and making sure it would be safe while he was out. On the outskirts of Nimbus, he wandered around for a time and prepared himself to go out and explore. Once he was ready, Nikodemus made his way to the Teleport gate in the main plaza. Standing there, Nikodemus spoke clearly. "Teleport: Florenthia!" Within a second, Nikodemus was enveloped in a blinding light and then was standing in the midst of Florenthia Village. Looking around, Nikodemus couldn't help but give a gasp at the sight of the verdant forest around him, not to mention the large tree he stood within that held the town aloft. Making his way through the large tree, Nikodemus was stunned at the massive amount of craftsmanship and architecture it took to build the village.

Reaching the bottom, he stopped long enough to equip himself with his shield and axe. He would not be caught unawares outside, and he wanted to make the most of his time exploring with little to no issues or interference. After equipping his weapon and shield, Nikodemus opened a pouch and took a small potion out. Consuming it, he felt the enhancement kick in and his blade glowed a dark green color for a moment. After finishing his preparation, Nikodemus began to venture into the deepest parts of floor 8. About him was a swamp-like terrain, small wooden and rope bridges suspended from large trunks of trees or bits of land that weren't sunk beneath the stagnant waters. Looking about, Nikodemus saw many different types of fauna thriving far off and out of his reach. Birds flitted through the trees and around the branches and through leaves. Small reptiles moved about on water logged bits of wood, forked tounges flicking the air and snatching small insects. High within the canopy, Nikodemus could here the sounds of different primates. He knew that some of them were dangerous, and others mainly harmless or afraid of anything bigger than them.

Continuing on the moldering wooden and rope bridges, Nikodemus paid them little heed. While he would have weighed in at nearly 1/4th a ton in his armor, the game had a nice compensation mechanic that made even the heaviest of weapons and armor lighter than air. As he stood amidst a small intersection where four separate pathways crossed one another, Nikodemus chose the left most path and began down it, winding ever deeper into the forest. With a grumble, Nikodemus found himself in a lesser traversed area. Thick patches of moss and slime encrusted the boards and ropes of the paths. Slipping lightly on some of the squelching moss, Nikodemus had to right to catch himself, almost resorting to slamming his large tower shield into the pathway to anchor himself. It was a thought of terror that stopped him, for if he did this, the pathway would break and crumble under the impact of the blow. Grumbling, Nikodemus made his way along the path and onto somewhat firmer land.

As he stood upon the large muddy landmass, Nikodemus took a moment to breath. The place around him was covered in thick patches of moss and vines, the water murky and almost a deep greenish brown the closer it was to the land. Turning about slowly, Nikodemus mumbled about eyes in the dark and prepared his Axe and Shield. Slowly walking along, the armored giant kept his eyes scanning left and right, and he occasionally glanced upwards at the sounds of tree branches shaking and snapping. With a bit of spite in his voice, Nikodemus finally called out. "Alright. Whatever, or whoever, is out there, show yourselves now. I have no time, nor patience in this manner." Standing still and ready for anything, Nikodemus heard the sound of branches shuffling and leaves shaking. A few feet before him, 4 large wild primates, Baboons it seemed, leapt to the ground and landed nimbly on all fours. Their snouts snuffed at the air and their razor sharp teeth dripped with saliva. Eyes the color of amber sat within their oblong skulls, and fur the color of charcoal and soot donned every inch of them save their hands and feet. Semi-human like hands were curled lightly into fists and rested in the cool muddy soil. Each hand was as large as Nikodemus, but the fingers were elongated and tipped with curved talons. The feet matched the hands, but were strong and slightly longer, giving them more power and ability to grab and hold onto things.

With the four standing before him, Nikodemus gauged the situation and knew he would come out on top, even if it took more than an hour and he had to whittle their health down by a few points a hit. Grumbling, he prepared his shield for any strikes to come, and brought his axe behind him. He wanted to deal with this quickly and dispatch of these beasts without much issue. As he prepared to fight, the first of the four primates began hooting and howling, as if speaking. Listening cautiously, Nikodemus thought he could make out words. Straining his ears, he listen more to the strange grunts and vocalizations, Nikodemus felt his blood freeze. The noises he heard were all one word, repeated over and over, made him uneasy. "Mur...Der...Er... Mur....Der...Er... Murder...Er Murder...Er. Murder...Er. Murderer. Murderer." Slowly, each other primate began to hoot and howl the same word. Looking at himself in the reflection of the water nearby, Nikodemus saw the orange cursor above his head and what he thought was blood about his armor.

Hearing the hoots and howls as words began to set Nikodemus' mind on edge. His insanity strained against the bonds of his psyche and made him shake with anger and fear. Somewhere deep within his mind he knew the words were not real, that his insanity and the recent events leading to the death of Cassin and him gaining his orange cursor were what was causing this hallucination. But that part of his mind was quickly shut into a cage of impenetrable iron and hidden with the darkness of his madness. Seeing the hallucination, Nikodemus thought the beasts chanted the word 'Murderer' over and over, point accusitory fingers his way and slamming their palms on the muddy ground in spiteful gest and a sign of judgement being passed.

With his axe ready, he felt the threads of his sanity being plucked, and then snapped as if with a thin knife. With a howl of pure madness, Nikodemus charged a Sword Art and then loosed his axe in a deadly throw. As the handle left his hand, he activated the Sword Art <Tomahawk Thrust> and send the blade on it's whirling path of scything death. As it spun through the air, each Wild Baboon tried to leap at Nikodemus and avoid the blade. To their dismay, each had leapt into the blades path. Nikodemus had telegraphed their moves and knew they would leap for him. The blade whirled in with a vicious arc and slammed, blade first, through each Baboon. As it did, it passed through their digital bodies and exited the other side, leaving a burning red gash of pixelated data in them. Once the blade had sliced through each beast, it rebounded from a tree and returned to Nikodemus' outstretched hand. Catching it, he watched all four Wild Baboons fall to the ground and burst into pixels, vanishing from sight.

Having dealt with the four Wild Baboons, Nikodemus began to storm through the marshy jungles. With his anger and insanity unbridled, the armored giant cared little at the moment for anything save what he came to do, albeit in a strange, insane manor. Coming through a small bit of scrub brush and undergrowth, Nikodemus stopped abruptly and growled. Four more Wild Baboons stood before him, their yellow eyes and dirty stained teeth pointed directly at him. Grumbling, he took his axe up once more and charged forward. As the beasts leapt for him, Nikodemus activated his Sword Art <Tomahawk Thrust> once more and adjusted it's flight path, hurling the blade away from both him and the baboons. Each beast came in and began clawing at his armor, their talons doing little to him. Laughing, he felt a few hits made minor cuts in his skin as the claws got around armor. With a rattling of chain links, Nikodemus' axe came whirling around a tree and slammed into each Baboon, one by one, before landing in his hand once more. As it hit each Baboon, they were sliced through completely and burst into pixels before they could register the blade. With each of the beasts dealt with, Nikodemus sighed and re-sheathed his weapon. Moving on once more, he made his way through the brambles and brush around him.

Moving through the jungle of floor 8, Nikodemus kept his eyes about. He had encountered 2 groups of angry monkeys with a bone to pick with him, and in his current state, he was not a person to be harassed. Moving through the flora, Nikodemus stopped occasionally to rest his legs for a moment, leaning on a tree or rock. His broken mind wandered from away from him from time to time and caused him to reflect on the events of his adventure with Hydra. He had found himself on floor 5, entering into a quest to find a mans brother. He did just that, and was cornered by thieves. Hydra had followed him and saved his hide, and Nikodemus repaid that debt by slaying the man he sought to save. He had not started the quest with the intent to do so. No, instead he had turned to that route when the man, Cassin, had spoken of betraying his brother and selling him up the river to the thieves. In anger at the betrayal, Nikodemus lost his mind and murdered the man. Due to Hydra using his weapon on the man to stop him from fleeing, when Nikodemus struck the killing blow, it turned both into Orange Players. This was a new stain upon his soul that Nikodemus knew he'd have to live with forever. Because of this event, he had begun his journey to helping people, but knew the Orange Cursor above his head was as much a large sign for people to steer clear of him.

After resting for a moment, Nikodemus began to move on once more. his legs strode through the brush and over puddles of water with ease, carrying his large frame. As he darted around split and falled tree trunks, large rocks, and thicker bushes that would entangle him, Nikodemus couldn't help but feel his mind wander more and more. The events of the murder of Cassin replayed, and other events from the past. Him, on floor 9, hunting for bandits. Trying to make peace with them and bring the issue to an accord. They had attacked him, and he retaliated with violence and death. Feeling worse for this, Nikodemus tried to clear his mind and push on, but no matter what, he felt the hallucinations of the Baboons howling 'Murderer' ring in his mind.

Clearing a large rock in one leap, Nikodemus landed off balance and rolled to his hands and knees. Panting in exhaustion and anger, Nikodemus glanced at himself within a puddle of water. The orange cursor was naught to him but a glowing beacon of shame, and he felt it with every minute. Not shame for what he did. No. He felt fine and justified for the death of Cassin. But having drug Hydra down with him, that was bad. Had he been stronger, Hydra would maybe have not needed intervene and help slay the thieves. He'd have possibly stayed in the shadows and watched Nikodemus instead. He'd have stayed green. Angry, Nikodemus beat an armored fist into the ground, leaving an imprint in the soft soil. Standing, Nikodemus once more took to running through the jungles. His armor clanked as rocks and low hanging branches bounced from it. His breathes came out in gasps and pants. Every muscle in his body screamed at him for rest, yet his madness pushed him further into the dark jungle of floor 8.

Moving along, Nikodemus stopped momentarily. his insanity had once more grabbed him and he could do nothing to stop it. Grabbing his head, he began to sing 'Elfenlied", a germanic poem turned into a song. Reciting the words over and over, he tried to calm himself, but it failed. His insanity raged within his mind, and it fed his anger more. Starting off in a run again, Nikodemus began to hallucinate worse. All around him, from the shadows of large trees, standing beside rocks, Hip deep in waters, sitting atop low hanging branches, everywhere, stood Cassin and Ali. They chanted 'Murderer' and held mirrors up, reflecting the Orange Cursor back at him. Howling in anger, Nikodemus charged on, drawing his axe and hacking at every hallucination he saw. His blade sliced through thin air and dispelled some of the illusions he saw, but it wasn't enough. He kept seeing and hearing them in his madness. Slowly, the battle rage he had come to know in his youth came over him. The edges of his vision turned red and black, and he felt the anger burning within him and boiling over.

Coming into view of more Wild Baboons, Nikodemus stopped and prepared his sword art once more. Using his <Concentration> skill to target each one perfectly, Nikodemus charged forward and activated his Sword Art <Tomahawk Thrust> once more. Hurling the blade, it followed a specific path past the beasts as they charged him. Once more they beat against his armor, barely scratching him. This time, their scratching activated his armors <Thorns> effect, sending a pulse of damage into each beast and hurting it. As their HP bars depleted into the red, the axe spun through the tress, having rebounded from a large trunk and turned it's flight path, and sliced through each Wild Baboon. As it exited the last one, Nikodemus caught the blade and was once more moving as each beast burst into pixels and fell.

Crossing over another large body of swamp like water, Nikodemus came to another large land mass that was mostly mud. In the midst of the landmass, four more large Baboons sat digging through the mad for large grubs. Not wanting to deal with them, Nikodemus prepared his Sword Art <Tomahawk Thrust> and then loosed his sword once again. The blade flicked through the air and arced around the beasts, then came in from their left flank and sliced through them again. Each Baboon howled as it burst into pixels and vanished. Catching his axe once more, Nikodemus rolled his shoulders. His armor's <Regen> effect kicked in and healed him slightly. Moving on, Nikodemus leapt through the brush and over rocks and began to journey farther out.

Moving along Floor 8, Nikodemus began to calm down slightly. His mind began to move from the thoughts of the events of Floor 5 and the murder of Cassin, and began moving towards the memories of helping people. He knew that he had done a lot of good helping people of late, and had more plans for helping more. With each moment that passed, his mind pushed the thoughts of that orange cursor and began to rest on other things. Stopping for a moment, he let his mind dwell on the thought of his plans for helping any lower level players more and more. Reciting 'Elfenlied' once more, he began to calm more and he could grasp the broken fragments of his mind, reigning them in better.

"Bei Nacht im Dorf der Wächter rief: Elfe! Ein ganz kleines Elfchen im Walde schlief wohl um die Elfe!" Repeating the first line over and over again, Nikodemus began to sigh and feel his insanity get restrained once again. Shuddering with the feeling of his mind reeling from being lost in the dark. Grumbling and holding his head, he felt the headache pulse between his eyes. Once again, he began to move along through the brush and debated returning back to his home. Deciding to push that thought away, Nikodemus kept on deeper.

After moving through the jungle deeper and deeper, Nikodemus no longer felt the headache as bad. His mind was no longer reeling from being trapped in the insanity and being lost for so long. Trying to keep himself aware of his surroundings, Nikodemus looked about but saw nothing. Deciding to take a break, he sat down and began to count off the things he needed to do to fulfill his plans. "Need to get more Col and Materials. Need to make some more stuff. Need to get in touch with some people. Need to get some more experience under my belt. Need to find out how to rid myself of this damned cursor... That is important. Definitely!" After he had ticked off the items he needed to do, he smiled and stood. Moving on, Nikodemus made his way deeper.

Walking over a large pathway, Nikodemus once more found himself on a landmass of muddy soil that was the crossroads between 4 paths. The two side paths looked the most used so Nikodemus didn;'t wish to go over them. Instead he chose the one before him. With a smile, he thought of the first time he had helped someone out. He enjoyed the feeling of being useful and helping another play as he had been helped. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge. Looking about, he knew he would return and continue his work. The orange cursor would not be a literal curse over his head. He was determined of that. With a smile, he began to cross the pathway and wondered what awaited him beyond.

As he crossed the bridge-like pathway to the halfway point, Nikodemus realized to late he had been ambushed. Bursting from the waters and leaping from trees covering in vines and leaves, Nikodemus was surrounded on both sides by Wild Baboons. They hooted and howled, throwing sticks and chunks of wood about. "Ah COME ON! I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!" Angry, Nikodemus looked about, but saw no escape. Growling, he resorted to slaying them. Powering his <Tomahawk Thrust>, Nikodemus loosed his axe in one direction. The blade whirled end over end and soared through the air, then rebounded from a rock and came past the group of Baboons behind him, hitting both and turning them to pixels. The blade then whirled off, hit a tree, bounced back, and slammed into both Baboons before him. As they both burst, He caught the blade and resheathed it. "Stupid monkeys...."

Before Nikodemus could step from the pathway, four more of the Wild Baboons came loping down the way he was headed. Seeing this as a sign to turn around and return, Nikodemus prepared to do so, but was caught unaware by a thrown branch. Feeling it hit him square in the knee, he grunted and turned back. "Fine. We'll do it your way." Growling, Nikodemus tossed his axe forward, activating his <Tomahawk Thrust> one last time. The blade whirled end over and and went through each ape as it did, then bounced back and returned to his hand. Catching it, he felt the surging crush of ape bodies smash into him. Bracing himself, he held strong, feeling each beast burst into pixels one by one. When they were gone, Nikodemus grumbled, turned, and began running back the way he came, ready to be home.

Moving across the path back the way he came, Nikodemus once more cut through the brush and small trees. Deciding he did not wish to push forward anymore due to the fact that he was getting to close to a point where mobs were spawning in numbers too great for him. suspecting a field boss or some other thing, Nikodemus knew he needed to return, or die. Slipping through some tight packed trees, Nikodemus moved along at a quick speed. He was feeling much better, and he wanted to get back to Florenthia and then to his shop. Creeping around trees here and there, Nikodemus smiled as he came past and back onto another of the paths he had taken previously.

Going across the pathway, Nikodemus smirked and kept running forward. Smiling he ran and leapt over and through brush and trees. Slipping past a rock, he came to another pathway and began running down it. Being careful not to slip and fall on any moss or wet boards, Nikodemus made his way through the jungle and across the water filled swamps. As he crossed each one, he moved on faster and kept cutting the distance to Florenthia down. Passing many different fauna, he didn't stop to see if any of them were hostile. As he made it to where he knew the half way point was, Nikodemus stopped for a moment and took a breather,

Resting for a minute, he smiled and then began to run again. Moving past places he had fought Wild Baboons at, he made sure to not slow near them. After passing them he did not stop. Instead he kept moving. coming to the second pathway he had crossed, he began to trace his way back. Coming to the first path he had went down, he turned on it and made his way back to the base of the tree where Florenthia sat. Climbing up it, he came to the first merchant area and continued upwards. As he climbed the large tree, he began was glad to be back in a safe zone. Reaching the main plaza where the teleport gate was, he stopped and sighed a deep breath, relaxing for a moment.
