[PP-F3] <<Worn out Welcome>> A Gift for a Friend (Kooh) - COMPLETED

Recommended Posts

Cygnus chuckled as Kooh appeared at least thankful the battle was over with. A weight felt like it had been lifted off of his shoulders. That ominous feeling was just his imagination like he thought. Just as he thought that, however, he heard the sounds of armored footsteps fast approaching. They were being ambushed! Cygnus reacted quickly to the advancing Elves, holding Gavel at the ready. He moved to parry a blow from the Captain, but their numbers overwhelmed him and he found himself grabbed from behind by one of the mobs as the others waylaid him. "Damn it! You... son of a..." He struggled against the Elf, but he had a hard time trying to dodge blows and free himself at the same time. He had never fought so many mobs before. Regardless of their circumstances, Cygnus found himself excited.

"Ah!" An involuntary gasp left Kooh as she was pushed aside, a pair of soldiers shoving past her to attack her party member.  A low, barely audible growl escaped her lips as her fingers curled into fists underneath her claw weapons.Though the brunette couldn't be called weak by any means, multiple attackers meant he was likely to be overwhelmed if their attacks continued to land.

The blonde set her eyes on one of the soldier's backs, marking her target as she prepared to attack. Lowering her stance, she took a deep breath as she visualized the pattern she had to execute. After only a moment, the girl ran up behind the elf, planting her right foot firmly as she readied a sweep to take out the soldiers legs. Before she could even attempt the attack, however, the NPC's sword arm swung back as he wound up another swing of his weapon. Unprepared for the sudden movement, the soldier's elbow made solid contact with Kooh's shoulder, shoving her off balance and forcing her to stumble backwards to stop herself from fall to the ground again.

Cygnus struggled more against the soldier's grapple, wrestling around with the Elf. "Get off me!" The warrior roared, smashing his head into the soldier's face. With a growl, the soldier retaliated, slashing Cygnus across the chest with his sword. He tried his best to parry the blows from the rest of the mobs, but they were just too fast and their numbers were too great. His HP bar began to dwindle under the onslaught. A bead of sweat formed on his brow. He was beginning to get nervous. The Dark Elves began gaining ground, pushing him back towards the trees. Cygnus lunged to try to get behind the group, but the Captain stepped in the way, bashing him upside the head with a massive black and gold shield.

As Cygnus dealt with his attackers, Kooh had stumbled back from the group. As she did, she would fall into the 18-inch blade of a black leather clad Dark Elf's dirk as he stood behind her, as if waiting for her to fall right onto his blade. He wore goggles and a mask that hid the rest of his face. He had a short white mohawk on his head. As he stabbed Kooh, he leaned forward and whispered in here ear. "Hey. Come here often?" A light chuckle following after. He then planted his boot firmly in her back, sending her forward onto the ground.

Just as she caught her balance, Kooh felt a solid force pushing up behind her. An uncomfortable tingling sensation spread throughout her body, centered in her midsection as her HP bar slowly began to drain. The girl was stunned for a moment, looking down at her body when her eyes widened in realization as they rested on the tip of the long dagger's blade. A bright red gash glowed around the blade that had run her through, and before she could bring herself to turn her head in search of her attacker, another solid force pushed sharply against her shoulderblade, sending the girl to the ground.

She had managed to react just quickly enough to brace herself against the dirt path with her arms, skidding slightly across the ground. After she'd landed, the blonde reactively clutched her stomach with her right arm, her breaths short with the shock of the attack. Her health now inched into the yellow as she lay panicked on the ground, but as the threat of her attacker still loomed over her, Kooh seemed to snap to attention, pushing herself to her side with her free arm while her eyes finally settled on the masked elf.

Meanwhile, Cygnus' battle was just as rough as the elf soldiers dragged out the combat, coming at him with another onslaught of critical attacks. The man's armor could stand up to the brunt of their strikes, but as the two players were now separated with their health bars dropping it was becoming a battle of attrition that was weighing in the elves' favor.

Cygnus's eyes widened as he saw Kooh fall to the ground after being stabbed by the masked elf. He just had to get to her. He just had to. He looked at his own health bar as it dwindled away, almost into yellow. He could hardly withstand their assault. The warrior desperately tried to parry and dodge but their attacks always seemed to find him. He began to grow more nervous, almost fearful.  What could he do if they couldn't manage to land a blow? He grunted as the captain ran him through with his blade , then tried his damndest to put some more distance between himself and his enemies.

Kooh's fight went from bad to worse, as the Elf closed the distance between them quickly with his dirk wielded backhanded and shoved his blade in her back again. With a sadistic laugh, he turned his grip around and pulled it out. "Well, little girl. Looks like our game is over." It was as if even through his mask, you could feel his savage grin.

Kooh felt as though her body was moving slowly, far too slowly to keep up with the rogue's swift movements. Before she could even struggle to get to her feet, the elf had stabbed through her again, sending a dull sensation through her spine to the rest of her body. The girl let out a cry as the attack struck her, sending her health plummeting again. Her garnet eyes wavered as they seemed to search the ground in front of them for something. Shortly after, an involuntary gasp left her along with the dagger. Drawing in a sharp breath, the girl gathered whatever force she could find left in her body. Turning herself on her side, Kooh brought her arm across the elf looming over her. Raking her claws across the side of the rogue's face, its mask was now torn as a trio of red slashes lingered on his face.

As a glimmer of hope could turn the tides of battle, the dark elf captain smirked in satisfaction as he stood over Cygnus, preparing for yet another strike. Taking a firm hold of his longsword, the elf brought his weapon up and across his body before swinging it back in a fast horizontal motion. Just as quickly as his blade whizzed through the air, the captain's eyes widened as his target was able to duck under his sword, the momentum carrying the weapon directly into the bark of a nearby tree. As the leader pulled at his weapon to free it, he would only scowl in dissatisfaction at the failed attack.

Cygnus ducked under the Captain's sword and smirked as it bit into the bark of a tree nearby. His smirk quickly faded however when he saw Kooh's HP. It was almost down to nothing. "Kooh! Hang on, i'm coming!" He desperately fought back as many of the strikes as possible. "God damn it! Get out of my way!" He roared, pivoting on his heel and executing his Sword Art, Eruption. Cygnus spun around, cleaving through the soldiers as though they were nothing. The Captain brought up his shield to try and block the blow, but Gavel sliced right trough the metal and cleaved the Elf in two. His targets burst into a rain of blue pixels. The warrior paid them no mind and charged forward, praying he got to Kooh before her attacker did.

The Rogue cried out as Kooh swiped her claws across his face, ripping off his mask. The Elf growled and attempted a retaliatory strike, but he was partially blinded from the blow and his attack went right past her. Cygnus had a chance to take him out now. He had to be sure to not waste it.

Kooh didn't realize she'd been holding her breath until her chest tightened. The girl lay with her back to the ground, propped up on her elbows now. She felt her right leg weakly kick against the ground in a feeble attempt to recover or disengage from the one-sided fight. The elf stared down at the girl with a twisted grin, his dagger dancing in his hand before he took a firm grip of it.

'Ah.' Kooh's expression changed as she stared at the glinting blade, eyes soon drifting over to meet the elf's. The panic, fear, and helplessness all drained from her face, leaving her blank and motionless. 'How uncool.' Her mind whispered as she waited patiently for the elf's next attack.

Cygnus didn't even stop to register his victory over the mobs. Kooh was down to her last sliver of HP, and by the looks of things, this Dark Elf was getting ready to finish the job. Cygnus continued his spin from his Sword Art, making it to where the Dark Elf was just as the mob struck to end Kooh's life, his dirk made contact with Cygnus's blade just in time, sending sparks flying. As the dark Elf looked at Cygnus in shock, probably realizing his fellows were dead, he heard the warrior hiss one phrase; "You will not have her." Without hesitation, he smashed his head against the Dark Elf's sending him sprawling to the ground. Before his back even touched the hard, dusty earth, however, Cygnus plunged his blade into his chest. The rogue let out a weak chuckle before exploding into thousands of pixels. With the battle finished, Cygnus turned around to face Kooh so he could make sure she was okay. "Are you okay? That was a close call. If I had been just a half second slower..."

'Huh?' Kooh hardly processed the scene before her. The girl's garnet eyes flickered back to life with the brunetter warrior standing over her in front of her gaze. Blinking as her mind slowly began to comprehend everything, she finally registered his words as well. "Oh. Yeah." She answered simply with little emotion present in her voice. Willing herself to move, the blonde picked herself up, getting to her feet and doing her best to rid herself of the dirt that stained her clothes and skin. Most annoying of all were the two glowing red gashes visible on her torso where the elf's dagger had driven completely through her. She scowled lightly as her hands brushed over them, but quickly caught herself and erased the expression from her face. 'How long are these things going to be here?' She thought with slight annoyance.

"So, should we head back?" Kooh suggested, wasting little time before speaking again.

Cygnus stared at her in disbelief. She had almost died, and there she was standing there as if nothing had happened. As she asked if they were going to leave, Cygnus put up one hand as a "stop" signal. "Hold on, you are aware you almost died, right? Half a second slower, i'm serious about that, half a second, you would be dead right now." His tone was a mix of disbelief and a small amount of bubbling frustration. He was frustrated because he was so worried about her and she just shrugged it off like it was no big deal. His face had confusion and a host of other emotions etched into it. Kooh treating her near-death experience like this perplexed and almost angered him. "I was so worried, and here you are just... just..." the rest of his sentence got caught in his throat. He wasn't used to speaking like this to begin with.

Kooh blinked at the man, her attention drawn back to him with a split second of surprise at his words. Now she'd done it. The girl averted her gaze, the gears in her mind struggling to turn. Faces and phrases passed through her mind, weighing her options for what best suited the situation. Could she still salvage this? Was it worth it? Maybe. Cygnus was a "nice guy", but she couldn't exactly throw on a pair of teary eyes now.

For the first time in a while, the girl looked like she struggled for words. "Look, thanks and all," No, that wasn't right. Her lips pulled down into a small scowl. She was growing more and more frustrated with the situation and herself. "I mean," She tried to draw things out, giving herself a second more to choose the right words. A small sigh escaped her. She brought her hand up to swipe downward and summon her menu. With a few clicks, the weapons around her wrists vanished and the blonde shoved her hands into the pockets of her jacket. Still avoiding his gaze, Kooh began walking back along the trail that had led them so far out into the foggy woods. "Just don't worry about me."

As Kooh tried to walk away, Cygnus got in front of her and blocked her path. "What part of "you almost died" do you not understand?" A hint of desperation found its way into his voice. "Why is this not a big deal to you? You are aware death is permanent here, right?" He got closer. "Aren't you the tiniest bit afraid?" Even if Kooh wasn't, he was. That battle was the first time he really feared for his own life as well as someone else's. He was still processing it and that feeling of fear still had a tight hold on him. He couldn't say anything else, he just looked at Kooh with that same confused expression.

Kooh stopped short as Cygnus stepped in front of her. The girl scowled lightly at his persistence, but avered her gaze again as he began to lecture her. Her eyebrows twitched downwards in annoyance as his words continued prodding at her. The blonde finally looked back to him with a glare. "I said not to worry about me." Her tone was a mixture of serious and annoyed, and she held an air about her that Cygnus would have never seen before. If only she was a bit better with her temper, maybe he wouldn't have ever had to.

It was a shame, really. The brunette warrior had been pretty valuable, and it probably would have done well for her to keep him around. But she always knew going in that she couldn't expect anything to last, and the distressed man standing before her was no exception. She continued staring at him with sharp garnet eyes, her voice unwavering. "Let's go back to town before more of them show up." She practically commanded, continuing to dismiss the matter. As much as she would have liked to break whatever bond he'd formed with her quickly, she wasn't in a position to leave herself alone right now.

Cygnus didn't know what to do after that. Kooh's glare made him feel incredibly uncomfortable. He tried to speak, to explain to her that he was just worried for her safety and no amount of her telling him not to would change that, The two players had known each other since level one, and Cygnus had spent more time with her than anyone. It kind of hurt his feelings that she was acting like this with him. Soon, however, the sadness turned to a dull pain, and Kooh was practically declaring that they were leaving. Cygnus tried to fight her, but he was simply exhausted. Not in body, that was impossible here, but he was exhausted mentally. He didn't protest, he didn't fight her, he didn't even say anything in response. He just sheathed his sword at last and began the walk back to town. As he made the long march, the gears in his head were turning. How was she able to do this to him? He could have brushed something like that off if anyone else did it to him. He had to have a thick skin when he was a child, so Kooh merely taking a harsh tone with him shouldn't affect him this deeply. Little did he know, it was because he actually cared for the girl. More than he did a stranger. He considered her a friend. A rather close one at that. She had been with him since the beginning and helped shape who he was today, so it hurt that now she was pushing him away.Cygnus let out a defeated sigh, looking back to make sure Kooh was still following him.

The blonde was a bit surprised that the man had stopped arguing. She couldn't afford to back down now, though, so with her hands still resting firmly in her pockets the girl followed behind Cygnus with a generous distance between them.

Not daring to make a sound, Kooh heaved a mental sigh. 'Guess I was bound to mess up sooner or later.' She tried shrugging it off. 'Still... It was a shame it had to be him.' The girl stared at Cygnus' back as he walked ahead of her, feeling a twinge of regret. 'Why did I slip up? If I'd have tried a little harder I could've just swallowed my pride and it would've blown over.' Kooh replayed the scene in her mind several times, now easily coming up with the faces and emotions that would've best suited the situation.

With a small shake of her head to force the thoughts from her mind, the girl kept her eyes on the dirt path before her boots.

Cygnus and Kooh continued their silent, awkward walk. There weren't any mobs around, and that was a good thing, because Cygnus was paying no attention at all. The brunette warrior was too busy contemplating what had happened. He hadn't been in an awkward situation like this in a very long time and he wasn't handling it very well at all. He wanted to look back and see if Kooh was feeling the same way he was, but he couldn't force himself to turn his head around and look at her. He sighed. Cygnus knew he had to deal with this or else it was going to eat him up inside. Almost without warning, he stopped. He turned to Kooh, awkwardly staying silent for a moment. After a few seconds, he spoke. "Do you... want to tell me what that was about?" He cut the sentence off at the end. He didn't want to sound like a jerk. He rephrased that. "I was just worried about you, you know. You were one of the first friends I ever made here and..." He cut himself off. He wasn't good at this. "I was just afraid I was going to lose you. Then, when you acted that way, it... it hurt." He decided to leave it at that for now. He wasn't the best at opening up to someone.

Kooh nearly tripped over herself when the man stopped short, forcing her to come to a halt after him. There was still some distance left between them, but Kooh mentally groaned when Cygnus turned around to face her. She knew where this was going. As he turned and their eyes met she stared back at him harshly. Her expression was hard while she let him speak, and when his sad words ended she resisted the look of guilt that had threatened to pass over her features. She couldn't leave any room for doubt.

"Friends?" She steeled herself for the icy words that left her. "You shouldn't be so quick to trust someone so completely." She kept her eyes locked on his."I was serious when I said don't worry about me." The sharp words and hard pushes were always the worst part. But as long as she stayed firm, he'd be out of her life and she could move on. It would be quick, like a band-aid. "You don't know the first thing about me." She ended coldly,

Cygnus literally felt his heart break at Kooh's words. It appeared she didn't think of him as a friend at all. His hands balled up into fists, his teeth grinding against each other. The sadness was replaced with rage. It was a common thing he did when he was younger. Rage was always easier to deal with, or so he thought. He just stood there, staring at the ground with his fists clenched tightly. If this were real life, he would almost certainly be bleeding from just how tightly he was making a fist. What she said was true, he didn't know the first thing about her. He saw that now. But she didn't know anything about him, either. He never mentioned his fiance and how she was taken away from him just as they were starting their life together. He didn't mention his daughter, who has had god knows how many birthdays while he was in here. He finally hissed out what he wanted to say. "And I bet you think you know all there is to know about me?" He took one heavy step forward, his armor letting out an intimidating clank. "I'm not losing anyone else in my life, dammit! Miki was already taken from me and I refuse to lose you too!" He screamed out, slamming his fist into a nearby tree.

Kooh gauged his reactions carefully. Her ruby eyes scanned over Cygnus as he practically trembled with anger. 'Good.' She thought harshly. 'Just hate me and get it over with.'

She managed to keep herself from flinching at his sudden outburst. This time, she held her emotions in check, cycling through the expressions she needed. An amused smile played on her lips at his words. After she'd stayed completely still for the longest time, the blonde shifted her weight onto her left leg, relaxing her shoulders slightly. "You're right." She agreed casually, countering his rage with nonchalance. "We don't know anything about each other. Our pasts, our fears, our dreams." She emphasized the last word with dripping sarcasm. She pulled her hands from her pockets and crossed her arms over her chest. One last shove. "And maybe it should stay that way."
