[SP:F9] Tussle with the Tin Man! <<The Iron Guardian>>

Recommended Posts

"Cross Edge!" Soon after the move was declared the system took control of his movements and sent Seul hurling into the armored knight standing before him. Two slashes from his dagger were enough to fell his opponent and just as most hostile encounters did this skirmish ended with a pixelated rainstorm dowsing the area. He couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't done this particular quest sooner. The knights were pretty simple to beat and his objective was clear: Slay the field boss and retrieve its loot. Two days worth of traveling was already behind him anyway and  if the increase in ironclad knight activity was a sign he figured the boss wasn't too far away.

How did he even get here to begin with? It all started with the broker....

. . .

The ninth floor was quickly becoming a favorite spot of his as it seemed most of his time as of late was being spent exploring the volcanic ranges. After one such trip he was approached by a cloaked man. Of course the whole thing looked suspicious, but after some talking he was able to learn the location of a the floor's field boss. He even received the information for free... Kind of. In return the broker wanted the rare the monster dropped. At any rate Seul had no idea what the item could have been, so there was no trouble in agreeing to bring it back for a trade.

All the traveling would finally pay off as he arrived at the spawn point. From the edge of a cliff he could see the Iron Guardian walking about with its massive blade in hand. On looks alone it was quite terrifying, but if it fought anything like the iron knights then he figured it'd be an easy battle. A quick descent only gave him a brief moment to collect his thoughts before the battle was underway. One of the drawbacks to wearing such heavy armor was that the monster was somewhat limited in its movements. Seul wouldn't waste the opportunity to attack it and unleashed the Cross Edge one more, bringing its health down to about half with a single move before it could retaliate.

Following up with a second Cross Edge managed to reduce the Iron Guardian's health into the red zone. One more clean hit would ideally be enough to defeat it and the only reason he was even taking damage now was because of the thorns placed on the thing's armor. The ironclad warrior lifted its sword up above its head only to bring it down in a downward slash, but Seul lifted his shield to intercept the hit, resulting in a loud shockwave as metal met metal.

He was stuck. There had to be some method of getting the guardian to back away. He tried to use his dagger to lash out at the monster, but to no avail as the blade just barely fell short of its target. All the while the guardian was applying more pressure with its own sword on top of the boy's shield. It was a tough situation, sure, but not an entirely hopeless one. The boss hadn't even landed a hit on him yet. He just needed another moment to think things through before acting again.

"Damn it... Why's this thing so heavy?!" The weight of the sword was just starting to take its toll on him now. While no actual damage was coming from the guardian's efforts it was still a bad position to be in. He scanned the monster's body for any possible weak points, just without swinging his dagger this time. Sooner or later one of them would have to give and hopefully when that happened it would mean the end of the battle for the field boss.

Of course things were never quite that simple. As he readied the dagger to attack once more the Iron Guardian's blade had finally forced its way past his shield and slammed into his body, forcing up a large dust cloud in the surrounding area. Seul laid on the ground facing the sky and a brief glance at his health bar showed that the monster's attacks would only be for show this time around. He sighed while getting back up to his feet and in a another moment or two he knew his health would regenerate as if he had never been hit in the first place.

Just as he had imagined, his health bar was back to full in no time and he was ready to face the armored guardian once more. The player's renewed vigor seemed to make the boss take a more cautious approach to fighting him. Neither side budged as the first to strike too hastily would mean the end for the other. Well, not really in Seul's case. The coat and his mitigation were the only things keeping him alive. Both were a security blanket for him now and it was difficult to imagine using anything else.

The time for hesitation as drawing to a close. Now he just had  to land his next attack and the boss would surely fall. He didn't have time to think. He simply ran. "The first to waver is the first to die; hold nothing back!" Those would be the last words the guardian would hear before it erupted into a pixelated shower of death before his dagger. The Tri Pierce had done its job, hitting three vital points on the body of the monster to push it just beyond the point of no return.

"Alright... Now I just need to grab the banner and-" He could feel eyes watching him. What was this overwhelming killing intent tugging at his senses. Before he even knew what was going on he had spun on his heel to meet a straight sword head on, making a shallow cut into his arm as he tried to step back. The sword belonged to none other than the broker. "Hey, what the hell is your problem?!" He yelled, demanding an answer for the NPC's sudden display of violence.

He was met with only a smile as the man lazily twirled his sword by its hilt. Did he really follow him all the way there just to kill him for a stupid item? It was ridiculous. "Just take the thing if you want it that badly!"

"What do you think I'm doing?"

The broker asked as he rushed forward with blade in hand. Seul brought his shield up to intercept but the NPC's superior speed allowed the man to land a clean hit on the boy... But the damage was too low to actually matter and the coat healed the scratch seconds later anyway. All he could do was grit his teeth while retreating backwards away from the relentless slashes. Through gritted teeth the player was doing his best to convince the man to stop. "If you keep this up I'll be forced to fight back!"

"AHAHAHA! As if you could hurt me!"

Even for a NPC the guy seemed to be quite confident in his own abilities despite just witnessing his attacks be rendered useless by the player's superior defense. Seul chalked it up to just being the nature of his programming in the end. This time when the broker swung his sword the shield found its way to stop it in its tracks. "Well, you asked for this." The dagger began to emit a bright light before unleashing the full power of the cross edge, knocking the man off his feet and his health to a dangerously low level.

The broker was on the ground now, trying to back away as he stepped closer and closer with his dagger in hand. If the NPC wasn't spooked before then he certainly was now. It didn't look like he'd be going down without a fight though. Seul sat on the man's stomach to try and restrain him, but as he did the guy struggled, lashing out with his sword and cutting the player's shoulder in the process. This only served to anger him more though as the tiny wound healed up shortly after.

Against all odds the broker was still struggling for life. The man lashed out again but produced the same results as last time. This time however his battle healing skill activated after the blade hit the player. Seul raised an eyebrow in response. Was this guy just stalling until he could heal himself? It was sort of sad to watch. Even though the guy wasn't actually alive he still clung on to his life just like anyone else would. It made him second guess killing him. If only for a moment.

Enough was enough though. In one final desperate move the broker flung his blade straight for the boy's neck but Seul's shield blocked just before it could pierce his throat. Before the man could press his attacks any further the player plunged his dagger into the NPC's forehead, tracing out an infinity symbol before pulling away. A shower of pixels erupted seconds later and with that the deed was done. The banner was his and his alone. Now he just needed to find his way back home.

Another hard fought battle. Another achievement to write down in his journal. With a heavy sigh he made his way back toward the town of Vulcan. Why would anyone do this to them all? Trapping them in such a place. What purpose did it serve? There were so many questions and not enough answers to accompany them. Maybe one day he'd be lucky enough to find out, but until then he had to live with this reality. What kind of man was the creator of the game? Only someone with a twisted mind would think to do something like this. Probably.

ID# 64253 |  LD: 1 (Wow)

Seul let his eyes lazily glance around the area in search of materials to gather for his shop, but everything seemed to be... Unusable. This was one of the reasons why he never really enjoyed crafting in games like these. Aside from the fact that his job was useless, getting the items to craft with was a serious hassle in itself. He preferred the life of a fighter; traveling the world and making a living by slaying the creatures that stood in his way. It was a lot simpler than trying to sell things.

Perhaps if he tried another area he'd have more luck. Rather than stick around he walked further ahead until he came across a large stone to the side of the path. With his dagger he was able to chisel out one of the crystals growing within the rock and snag it as a material. Maybe his luck was starting to turn around. If he kept up the search he'd probably be able to find at least one more material to add to his stock back at the shop. With that in mind he continued to look.

By now he could see the town on the horizon, but it didn't look like there were any other gathering spots around. A real shame too as he was just starting to get his momentum for scavenging back. Oh well, at least he still had another successful quest under his belt. With any luck he'd be able to dish out a few more quests to push him to level forty in no time. The thought excited him to no end. It finally seemed like he was making it into the big leagues.

ID# 64268 | LD: 6 (No Dungeon)

Part of him halfway expected to find a sub dungeon on his walk back to town, but it would seem he wasn't that lucky after all. No secret passages opened up before him and in no time at all he was already standing at the town's gate. One last look to the outside world proved pointless as he was still unable to uncover anything of value. "Guess I should work on my search skills..." He mumbled under his breath before turning to continue his walk further into town.
