PP F1: Secret Medicine of the Forest

Recommended Posts

Esther was taking steps. Slow steps. After her encounter with Mari - the cold hearted Pink Pker, she realized that she was completely under leveled, and under experienced. If she were to be of any help, at all, she'd need to start gaining...what was it called? Ess Pee? So she could allocate them into areas that would help not only her, but Mari and even Arc. It was these slow, but sure steps of progression that had lead her to be standing in front of the quest shop. Feebly asking every player who passed for help.

She shifted to and fro, her fingers nervously entangled in each other - when a player passed, Esther called out to them. "Uh-Uhm excuse me, can you please help me? No. Ok. Sorry to bother you...." The player completely ignored her. Esther sighed, that was number 8 for completely ignore, 2 counts of 'f**k off, and one heinous count of 'sexual favours' How long had she been at this? The woman sighed as she headed toward a nearby bench, flopping herself down on it. Laying face down on the hard surface  the young woman mumbled, groaning into the wooden surface as she started imitating the players who had turned her down in a childish tone. "Oooo look at me, I'm too busy to help. I'm too busy eating bread. I'm too busy scratching my butt!" She held up her hand, and shook it at the air in mock anger. "I SAW YOU! IS YOUR BUTT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE BETTERMENT OF AINCRAD?" Her cries were muffled by the bench - and no doubt caught the questioning attention of onlookers or players pacing by. Not that Esther cared, she was frustrated. Why didn't anyone want to help, it was just one quest.

After a long and greuling trip with Calrex on the second floor, Lowenthal walked back tot he first floor. Located there was his favorite place to relax and get something to drink. He made his way there, and pulled up a seat, and ordered his usually smoothie. Lowenthal sat there for a few hours, passing the time and letting his muscles and body recover. He sat there talking about his adventures to those who would listen.

Lowenthal noticed that a few other customers were looking at the window, and murmuring quietly. Lowenthal squinted at them, as if his ears were at all affected by his eyesight.
"She's still out there?"
"IWhat is she even trying to do?"

Lowenthal curious as to what they were talking about looked out the window himself. He could see a pink haired girl talking to other players. What she was asking was completely muffled by the building. But from her actions, it seemed that she was trying to get some help. Perhaps she was lost, or even looking for someone. Lowenthal sighed, before stepping outside. Why pink hair, it always had to be pink hair. Lowenthal gave in, and decided to see what it was she needed help with, and if he could help in anyway, he would.

Lowenthal approached the bench the woman had retreated to, most likely in frustrating defeat. Lowenthal listened to the girl's rant as she vented. Lowenthal grinned, and held back a chuckle as she cried out about butts. He let out a small cough, alerting the woman to his presence. "Ahem, I'll have you know that some people take great pride in their butts. Some of us work hard on them." Lowenthal said, jokingly to the woman.

Esther heard a cough and quickly scrambled to a seated position, "oh gosh, I'm taking up the whole bench I'll move!" In an awkward array of movement Esther finally managed to find her bearing and sit comfortably, she glanced up to see a fiendishly friendly smile, and bright eyes beneath a mop of mousy brown hair. He gave a jovial laugh as he commented on how some people take great pride in their butts. Esther glanced away, brushing a long bang of lilac hair behind her ear. "eheh..you heard that huh? People can be so frustrating sometimes you know?" She glanced back toward the man, "with how hard and how long that fellow was scratching it, he must have been working very hard." Esther cheerfully replied in response, before laughing softly at her own joke. "Oh!" She stopped laughing as she felt a sudden wave of embarrassment wash over her, the feeling became clear on her youthful facial features.

Esther quickly got up, brushing herself off, she hadn't introduced herself, and felt it quite rude.  "Here." She extended her hand toward the youth, "I'm Esther. It's a pleasure to meet you." The woman tilted her head ever so slightly to the side, as she continued to smile, a grin filled with all her bright and earnest innocence. "And you are?"

Lowenthal shook his hands in front of him. "No no, it's fine. I'm not looking for a spot to sit." Lowenthal said, with an attempt to make the woman in front of him more comfortable and less erratic. Lowenthal ran his hand through his hair. "Yeah, people can be real butts at times." Lowenthal said, unable to force himself to laugh at the poor attempt of a joke he made. At least she was able to recover with her own joke.

Lowenthal took a step back as she stood, allowing her plenty of room to stand, as he took her hand to shake it. "Esther?" Lowenthal repeated, making sure he managed to get the pronunciation correct. "I'm Lowenthal. And the feeling is mutual. Hard to find like minded people who share in butt related humour." Lowenthal said, releasing the woman's hand. "But butts is not what I'm here for. Obviously you need a hand with something, and if able, I'm more than willing to lend a hand." He said with confidence in his voice.

"Lowenthal..." Esther repeated slowly in turn, as though committing it to memory, somehow - having never met the youth, the name seemed familiar. Where had she heard it before. Her soft fingers wrapped around his palm, "Lo...wen..thal..." She repeated, trying to pick where she had heard the name. It was on the tip of her tongue, at the very fringes of her mind, but she just couldn't pick it. Esther shook her head. It didn't matter right now. "You have calloused hands." Esther exclaimed, as Lowenthal released her hand, Esther took hold of it again, bringing it closer to her face - tracing around the hardened lines on his palm. "Are you a strong fighter?" She asked, finally letting go of his hand.

Esther smiled, and even offered a small laugh toward Lowenthal as he made another joke, after having spent most of her time the last few days with Arc and Mari, it was refreshing to see a kind face, a warm smile and to enjoy light hearted jokes. It reminded Esther that Aincrad hadn't sucked the joy out of everyone, and it made her fight all the more possible. "Yes, I do need help you see... uhm...where do I begin? Ah!"

Just as she did with Lycan, Esther bought up her HUD in front of Lowenthal, and showed him her menu and inventory. The option to pick a starter weapon still flashed before her. "As you can see, I haven't picked a starter weapon - and I don't want to. I'm really bad with games, and fighting is not in my nature." Esther laughed, "You could  call it utterly insane, but its my way of doing things - and I refuse to change that. The thing is..." Esther closed her HUD. "I've met a few people, who have in a way helped push me in the right direction, and I want to do quests to better myself. I want to help people, not hurt them, but to do that, I need to better myself first. You know?"

Lowenthal nodded. "I'd say that I'm good enough of one. Fighting on the frontlines tends to push you sometimes." He said, rubbing his hand as Esther returned it. He hadn't even noticed them become so worn. And they'd never look like this again, once he'd beat SAO and returned everyone to the real world. His attention returned to her as she spoke again. She brought up her HUD and displayed her stats and skills. Surprisingly, she had no weapon skill allocated. That, was something new. Lowenthal scratched his head. "You can always allocate your points into a different skill. Like First Aid, or Search and Detect." Lowenthal suggested. "Hell, maybe even an armor skill. Focus on keeping you alive and safe, for time when I can't be there." Lowenthal said, smiling.

"Yes, but that's why I want to get more Ess Peeh." Esther said, as she innocently mispronounced the term. "If I have more Esss Peeeh I can start putting them in areas that might be useful." She thought about it, what skill should be her first one, defence and first aid did sound like the logical solution, but then...she thought about Mari, and how the pink haired PKer.  "I am thinking....maybe search and detect, that helps you get materials right? I want to get lots of them."

Esther took a few steps forward, and turned on her heel to face Lowenthal, "That's why  I need help. I accepted what I think is meant to be the easiest quest ' Secret Medicine of the Forest - so, Mr Butt Loving Lowenthal, will you help me with that?" Esther felt content, this man seemed genuinely nice. He was a frontliner, but it didn't seem that the ire and stress of the frontlines got to him. Esther wanted to comment on it, she wanted to question how he remained so positive, but she held her tongue. Now was not the time, what she was more curious about, was seeing how a frontliner would fight.

Lowenthal tilted his head. Why was she enunciating it like that? Lowenthal cleared his throat. "Whilst, Search and Detect helps you with finding materials, at most you'll only find at one time is one. However, there is a new skill that was found recently that lets you find more than just the one. It's a bit of an investment, but it increases it from one material to three." Lowenthal explained, looking at his own skill list. He didn't have the mentioned skill, but it was available to him to purchase.

Lowenthal crossed his arms, in thought. "Medicine of the Forest? Man, it' been a long time." Lowenthal looked away, staring off into the distance. "I wonder how he's doing." He said quietly to himself. He returned back to normal, looking at Esther. "Well, shouldn't be terribly trifling." Lowenthal remembered the quest. Only thing to it was slay a few Nepents and get on with your day. Nothing terribly too difficult. Then again, this was the first floor and he was currently frontlining. He would be surprised if anything did happen to challenge him. "Alright, you've got yourself a deal. I'll give you hand." Lowenthal said, accepting the woman's request.

Esther blinked, "Wait what?" Her eyes lit up with pure fascination, and the woman grasped onto the material of his white jacket, petite hands gripping it tight. "What is this skill! Does this mean I can get more materials for Alchemy? How does it work? What do I need to do to get it?" Skills were a new concept for Esther, she hadn't really looked into them too much, she never thought she had a need to. Now, with both Arc and Mari in the forefront of her mind, she wanted to do everything in her power to help them. To bring smiles to their faces. Materials seemed to be a quick sure fire way to do that for Mari at least. Arc, well, Esthers solution for him was flowers, and a lot of playing follow the leader- aka follow the Arc.

Esther let go, as Lowenthal mentioned the quest, "Ah...right...yes, that comes first." She muttered, giving an awkward laugh as she rubbed the back of her head, "I think I got a little carried away there, I'm sorry. One thing at a time right?" Esther said, the statement was a confirmation for herself, she had to remember not to be so damn nosy and pushy with people, it was nice enough for him to help her with the quest. "He? Who is he?" Esther asked, as she began to walk toward the town exit, Lowenthal seemed pensive as he mentioned his 'mystery person'

Esther already forgot her vow to be nosy, she couldn't deny who she was.

Lowenthal let out an audible gasp as Esther gripped his jacket. "It doesn't take anything special." Lowenthal said quickly. "All it needs, is to be bought and it works fine." Lowenthal removed himself from the woman's grasp, straightening his jacket back out to it's normal uncreasedness. "Alchemist huh? Well, at least you'll be busy. Come around every new boss fight, there comes about twenty people wanting a whole lot of potions and crystals.Lowenthal bit his lip when Esther had brought up 'he'.

"Well, I did that quest with someone. A long time ago. And it's because of him that I'm here now, out adventuring, fighting the good fight, and helping young damsels in distress." Lowenthal said, boasting slightly. "It's been so long, that I've forgotten his name." Lowenthal said glumly. "But you're right, focus on one thing at a time. Let's get this quest started, shall we?" Lowenthal said.

Lowenthal stated that it would be easy to put get the skill, but for Esther, it wasn't. Anything past the most basic menu confused her. "Well, maybe the manly Lowenthal will have to help me later~" She mused in a sing-song voice as she walked. Soon the two were out of town, and began down the path toward the forest. Esther could see the quest marker on her map, and was just heading in the general direction of it. With a quest name like 'Secret Medicine Of The Forest' it was only natural to assume that the quest took place in the forest.

Esther was in good spirits, and had started humming to herself between her questions. She was honestly enjoying Lowenthal's company, having someone in high spirits put her in the same mind set. "Mm hmm, I'm going to be an Alchemist, and sell everything to everyone really cheap. To people who can't afford it, I want to give things away for free. I just want to help people...and an Alchemist seemed like the best course of action for that."

As they neared the forest, Esther bought the conversation back to this 'he' person, she was trying to be respectful, and not bring it up again, but - her nosy attitude just continued to get the best of her. "You may not remember his name now, but hey, maybe doing this quest will kick start your memory!" Esther said as she gave him a light slap on the back. "like a cup of hot coffee or something, yeh?"  She turned her attention to the forest, "I think the quest thing is near here, but I'm not sure what exactly to do now, the quest wants monsters to be slain right...OH!"

Esther quickly bought up her menu, and sent Lowenthal a party invitation, mentally thanking Lycan for showing her how to do so. "This would help right?"

Lowenthal blushed and chuckled. "Handsome? ANd help with out?" He asked to himself, his voice trailing off. Instead of pressing the question, he followed suit and escorted the woman out of town to her quest objective. The forest. Well, part of it was in the forest. The other part was actually delivering the medicine. Both of which were easy back then, but now should be easier than breathing.

"Not a bad cause to rally behind. God only knows how many people actually need the help. But you'll have compition in that department. Mainly Opal, Rain, Zandra. Opal's gone into hiding recently, so she's mostly a personal alchemist who makes things for herself. Then Rain and Zandra are pretty damn good alchemists at that. And God only knows how long Mari's been off the map." Lowenthal said, naming off a few of the notable alchemists in Aincrad. Lowenthal stopped walking as the party invite shot up in his face. "Aha! Maybe I will." Lowenthal said accepting the invite. His level and HP now visible to the woman beside him. "Party invite never hurt anyone. Well, that I know of." Lowenthal said chuckling.

Lowenthal began to rattle of the names of various Alchemists, none of which she heard of before. "I don't mind." She said earnestly. "I'm not doing this for fame, or for glory. I'm not doing this to be the most well known Alchemist or anything like that. I just figure, if I can help one person, then that makes it all worthwhile. Even if me being an alchemist helps the people around me, just those few people, then it's a brilliant success in my eyes."

Lowenthal accepted Esther's invite and her eyes grew wide. "oh wooow! You really are part of the frontlines...I mean, not that I thought you were lying or anything but you have like thousands of Ache Pees and Levels." Esther hadn't seen someone so strong before. She was utterly amazed at Lowenthals skill, she was thankful that fate had pushed the two together. With him on her side, this quest would be done in no time.

It was then, that Lowenthal mentioned a name that Esther did  know. Mari.

Esther's face lit up, and she clasped her hands together, repeating the name with unrivalled admiration. "Mari..."  She gushed. "Mari is the one who is going to help me. Ahhh~ You should see her potions, her skills, it's amazing. Those beautiful pools of blue, those delicate, long fingers...she's been through hell and yet she's still standing strong. It's so..so....delightfully elegant."  The way Esther spoke of Mari, her breathless words, her gushing compliments - it would make anyone who know Mari think Esther was insane, or under some sort of hypnotic suggestion, if not both.  Esther didn't have a problem talking about Mari with Lowenthal, how was Esther to know that Lowenthal was the very one Mari warned against?

Lowenthal stopped walking alongside Esther as she began to seemingly fan girl over the pink haired alchemist. His happy expression turned into one of concern. He looked under the health bar of Esther, and couldn't see that she was under the effects of any potions, or whatever else Mari may have up her sleeve. "So, you've met her too huh?" Lowenthal said, touching his hip where his dagger rested. He cursed himself for not noticing sooner. He had most likely fallen into a trap set by Mari herself. No, that wasn't like her. She wouldn't send some, woman out to act as bait. But then again, Lowe had been frequenting safe zones more and more often. And what better way to lure him out then with a 'oh please help me mr handsome knight'. Lowenthal removed his hand from his waist, and took a deep breath. "Look, Esther. Mari is, something but quite what you idolize her to be. She's manipulative, and those around her change. Always for the worst." Lowenthal said. "Take me for example." Lowenthal said holding his arms out. "Couple of years ago, I was honest, true, and hell even more handsome than now. But Mari changed it. I was like you in a sense. Mari took over my mind, not because of her looks or her talents. But her behavior. i wanted to know, how she kept moving on. After murdering her own daughter, to go on a kill another eight people." Lowenthal ran his hand though his hair.

"To summarize, it came to a point where I attacked her unprovoked. I almost killed her in my anger. And I've regretted it ever since." Lowenthal admitted. "So, just be careful around her. Don't let her make you someone you're not." Lowenthal said again. "But I've probably talked to much, let's just get back to your quest." He said, walking forward.

Esther stopped in her merry walk as Lowenthal stopped, his words made it sound like he had met Mari before, he touched his hip - although Esther didn't exactly realise it was where his weapon was. Her eyes were set on his. "Lowe, are you ok?" Esther asked, concern evident in her voice. Lowenthal turned serious, and it was as though his very aura had sapped the happy, airy, whimsical feelings from the air. Esther shifted on her feet, feeling uneasy. She was about to question it, but that's when he began to speak. Her eyes grew wide, as she finally realised where she had heard his name before. Lowenthals words were heavy, and held serious implications. Esther's chest tightened, she bit her lower lip. This wasn't right. What he was saying...it wasn't right...or fair...

"Mm....now I remember where I've heard your name..." Esther tilted her head to the side, pausing in their stead as she crossed her arms. "You know, Mari warned me about you too, although - for everything bad you have to say about her, she had very little bad things to say about you, she didn't even mention that you were the one who attacked her, if you hadn't of said anything - I don't think I would have put the two together." Esther mused, her brow furrowed. She didn't like hearing negative things about Mari, especially in such a selective way. "She said it'd be best if I stayed away from someone named Lowenthal. When I asked why, she shrugged, and said 'people do regrettable things.' I told her I would make my own choice, and she just told me to be wary. I don't think she's manipulating me. You weren't there, you didn't see her face, you didn't see her bloodshot eyes, or her quivering lips. She doesn't look like someone who is out to actively manipulate people. She just looks like someone who has given up."

Esther approached Lowenthal, pushing in front of him so she could poke him hard in the chest as she spoke in a stern voice. "Because people like you blame your shortcomings on another person.  No one person can evoke such changes in someone else without them letting it happen. You say she is manipulative, but you say such..." Esther paused, how Lowenthal had stated Mari killed her own daughter with such blatant and cruel honesty, without giving Esther the details of the incident. The lilac haired woman averted her gaze from Lowenthal as she hugged herself. her voice faltered, "You...you so simply say the things she's done - but you leave out the details. Before she let me any closer to her - she told me these things. She told me them in detail, as I sat there bawling my eyes out, asking her to stop. She insisted, stating that if I were to be anywhere near her - I need to know her previous sins."

Esther went quiet, closing her eyes, she squeezed herself tighter. It wasn't a pleasant memory for her, but it must have been even worse for Mari. Esther knew, that one of the reasons Mari was so brazenly open with her, was purely because Arc was there too - because of his relationship with this Thom person, still. Didn't that show that Mari was at least trying?  "You call her manipulative, but aren't you doing the same thing, without filling in the facts - you're manipulating my interpretation of her." Esther shook her head, "I'm not going to let anyone change me for the worst. If anything. I only wish to help Mari through the darkness that she's flung herself into."

Esther opened her eyes again, her arms falling to her sides, she took a few deep breaths to calm herself. "I will make my own decisions. I will make my own judgements. They won't always be good ones, but they will be mine. Not yours, not Mari's. Mine."

Esther began walking in front of Lowenthal, in hopes that he didn't realise how much the encounter, and the words had shaken her. "You say you regret it. Maybe one day you should apologise to her." Esther said, looking forward.

Lowenthal scoffed as the woman pushed her way in front of him. That's not how it was supposed to work. She was supposed to feel bad, and slowly trail along, where he was supposed to say something witty to lighten the mood and they could move on. But no, she had to be like him. Lowenthal stayed silent as she spoke, trying to listen and understand the meaning behind every word. That all failed when she said that Mari had nothing bad to say about him. "She, didn't?" Lowenthal stuttered, trying to make sense of it. Lowenthal was taken aback again, as she then explained what he had just done.

Lowenthal stood there silent for a moment, before letting out a single chuckle. "huah, yeah. Sounds like something she'd day." Lowenthal said. "Minus the condescending eye roll and the head tilt, sounded exactly like Mari." Lowenthal said again. "And, sorry. As I'm sure she's mentioned. I'm kind of a blathering idiot, who's not good with words." Lowenthal chuckled again. "But, I can't apologize to her yet. I'm not, strong enough. Killing floor bosses is easy, gathering the courage to apologize is harder." Lowenthal admitted.

Esther shook her head, still walking forward. "Mmm no, she didn't say any of those things, I think you hurt her pretty bad Lowe, even so - her warning away from you. I think it was more for me than for her to try and insult you." She heard the stutter in his voice, the realisation that maybe, the Mari he spoke about was just a misconception. That she really wasn't as bad as everyone thought.

"That's better." Esther said, as she heard him earnestly speak on what he had done to Mari - how his tone sounded as though he hadn't realized what he had done. Esther gave a small nod, affirming that what she had said was the right thing to do, Esther had to admit she was a little worried that it may have been too harsh, and if the conversation had gone any worse she would have apologised for the severity of her words. Instead, the happy go lucky man accepted what he had done was wrong. Esther turned back to face him with a small smile. "That sounds like the Lowenthal that I met today." She said, as she stuck out her hand to him again. "The handsome hero, Lowenthal - will one day apologise to Mari, and I'll stick around to make sure you keep that promise. Deal?"

The two were deep into the forest, Esther did not see, it, how could she? She had her back turned to the Nepent  which was quickly advancing on her, instead her eyes were on Lowenthal, brightly sparkling as they smiled along with her. Esther was just....content that the conversation had gone well, that she was able to make her own choices on who she spoke to, and how they had been the right ones.

Lowenthal smiled. "Yeah. Thanks, I really needed this talk." He admitted to her. He couldn't explain it, but he felt as though she was supposed to meet him today. Like it was some sort of destiny. Ever since that fight with Mari, he had been feeling completely awful. And as it would just so happen, some stranger screaming about butts would come into his life and make everything better. He had to keep this meeting a secret from Shizuka. Lowenthal blushed and rubbed the back of his neck.

Lowenthal heard the rustle of a creature behind them, and his attention gazed to it. A lone nepent had tried to sneak up on them. But he would rue the day he tried to intervene. Lowenthal quickly drew and dagger and charged at the plant monster almost seamlessly, pushing Esther out of the way of the monster's attack. "Watch it!" He cried, as he stood between her and the Nepent. "Alright, get ready. I didn't get a hit on it, so it still may come after you." Lowe explained, preparing himself for a fight.

Lowenthal mentioned that he needed the talk. Esther wasn't sure why, he didn't seem like he had all that much on his mind, still - at his words - Esther's smile only grew. "You're welcome, Lowe. I'm so happy I could help you. Even if it was just a little bit. That's what I wanna do, just - slowly help everyone, just a little bit. I want it to spread." Her smile faded, as she thought about the rumors on the higher floors. "I hear rumors about things that happen on the higher floors - and they don't sound nice - so its honestly a relief to see you still so full of life."

They weren't able to continue their conversation, Lowenthal had pushed Esther out the way, she rolled onto the ground, only to glance up to see a gross plant like creature with long tendrils, they sweeped over the two players, in preparation for a battle. Esther felt her heart begin to pound in her chest. She had never been up close to a mob like this before, passing boars was one thing but this?

"This is gross!"

Lowenthal focused on the tentacle. How long had it been since he had actually fought these things? Lowenthal took a peek behind him when he heard Esther cry out. "I know! Isn't it exciting?" Lowenthal said, reversing the grip on his dagger. Sometimes, fighting seemed to be the only thing he was good at nowadays. Fighting came as a second nature, as easy as breathing. The Nepent brought one of it's vines back, such an obvious tell now. Lowenthal took a step forward, ducking down beneath the attack as it went wide above him. Lowenthal's dagger glowed orange as his sword art began. He slashed thrice quickly, the air current becoming a weapon themselves as they tore into the Nepent. The Nepent grew three large red lines across it's body before crumpling down into blue pixels. LD: 15 (+1 Material) Lowenthal took the dropped itme in hand, and offered it to Esther. "Here, you're gonna need this in the future." Lowenthal said to her.
