[SP-F11] Getting an Upgrade!

Recommended Posts

"..." Hydra stood motionless as he examined the floor. The spearman hadn't been here properly, he had only ever passed through, and right now he was feeling a mixture of emotions. The forests surrounding the floor certainly didn't look appealing, however the main settlement was a sight to behold in contrast, despite the fact he could only view it from the outside. "I suppose I should get to work then." He finally mumbled turning to head into the forest.

A nearby merchant had warned him these places were crawling with antmen, weak in body and mind but had enough venom to kill him within a few turns if he faced too many at once. The brunette really didn't fancy that so he would pick his battles carefully. "Mmm mmm mm I hope this is worth it, I don't know how many materials I am going to need." Hydra thought to himself. In any case he must of only walked for five minutes before he sighted a small nest. Carefully he equipped Lyrica's fang and tapped his spear against a trunk to attract any of the creatures.

There was a brief silence, only to be followed by the sound of scuttling. After a few minutes two of the creatures popped there heads out instantly spotting Hydra. For whatever reason it was only the pair of them, Hydra would take it slowly to begin with so this was an ideal scenario for him.

Hydra had totally underestimated his opponent, in fact he had never encountered anything like it. As he raised his spear to activate his charge skill, within a blink of an eye they were already upon him. Their heads savagely biting into his armor. Hydra let out a yelp staggering backwards and slammed into a tree.

Glancing upwards he watched his hp gauge drop by practically a third. "What on earth are these things?" Hydra said his voice quaking slightly. Slowly the young adventurer staggered back to his feet clutching his arm which had been bitten badly. Thankfully the various enhancements on his armor activated which helped reduce the damage a little.

Hydra then charged however his lunge had been significantly weakened thanks to the previous attack and his spear cut through the air cleanly, however without coming into contact with either of the targets. "Damn." Hydra cursed backing out a little. He couldn't let himself be hit by these things again.

Hydra kept a careful eye on both creatures which were now hissing at him in an odd way. The spearman had decided to let them move first as perhaps he would be better able to read their movements. "Don't run whatever you do." He mumbled to himself. For a moment it looked like they were retreating, however Hydra quickly realised they were trying to surprise him.

"Not this time!" He practically shouted as he begun to spin his spear as quickly as possible around his body. The brunette's <Tribal Fury> was one of his most fancy looking sword arts, making him appear almost to be dancing as his spear whipped him around into some sort of frantic cyclone. The antmen unfortunately couldn't break past this blade flurry and both immediately shattered into crystals.

It took a moment for Hydra to stop spinning, he quickly checked himself for any more damage and finally let out a sigh of relief to see he was uninjured. The creatures here were actually dangerous, the young brunette would need to proceed with caution from now on. "Ah finally some materials." He spoke to himself in a light hearted cheery tone as he leant down to pick them up.

After killing his first two opponents the spearman began to wander through the forest searching for more. "Actually I could be searching around for any ordinary materials. I don't just need to kill antmen." He pondered. Thinking this the spearman glanced around his general vicinity. Mostly all that he could see was an endless stretch of woodland. Letting out a sigh all the young adventurer reluctantly continued onward.

After a while of walking the brunette eventually picked up on the sound of a stream running nearby. "May as well investigate it."Carefully Hydra begun  walk towards the sound of the noise. No materials appeared however he had certainly uncovered an uplift in the environment. A small stream ran through the forest with various types of wild vegetation covering its banks. Different flours, various types of stone. Even a small amount of sunlight filtered down illuminating a shallow pool.

Hydra paused for a moment to take it in before continuing his search for any materials nearby. He would start with the stones as these would more likely come in handy for a blacksmith than the flowers.

Hydra crouched down and examined the nearest stone, it was smooth in shape and grey in color. Nothing was that unusual about it. He slowly rolled it out his hand and continued down the river examining each one, a few had been colored and eroded by the weather. Others coated in clumps of moss however there was nothing that special about them.

Sighing it seemed his eyes had deceived him. "Oh well maybe next time." It was a similar scenario with all the wild vegetation in the area, most were just ordinary colored flowers most likely for cosmetic purposes. Giving up on his search in this area Hydra now decided to move downstream in the direction of the stream. It was likely that similar types of wildlife would appear, maybe then he would have greater luck.

The brunette let out a yawn and dequipped his spear, he hadn't seen any sightings of antmen for a while. It was unlikely he would be ambushed as they tended to live near there holes. He would however proceed with caution and keep an eye out for them.

After walking a mile or so the stream had completely run dry and driven Hydra to a cliff edge which overlooked more forest. "This isn't what I was after." He said closing his eyes and drawing out a long yawn. This time there was no real way to proceed, the view looked good at least, but trying to move ahead would result in an immediate death from fall damage.

A light gust of wind rattled the spearman's hair so much so it seemingly flowed in the air. *Click Click* A sound came from behind Hydra, he turned his head and looked into the forest where he spotted a nest. "Oh..." Suddenly another pair of antmen appeared, this was no different than the last battle other than the fact Hydra hadn't completely recuperated from his wounds and he was now cornered with his back to a cliff edge.

The young adventurer quickly equipped Lyrica's Fang and entered his <charge> stance. At least he had Intel from the previous battle as to how fast these creatures were.

Hydra tried his best to strike the antmen down as he charged forward, unfortunately there reactions were far to quick and they had the advantage of the forest meaning it was easy to maneuver out the way of his spear. However Hydra was equally as prepared, by the time they were ready to make there own counter attack the young brunette had already paced a few steps backward completely avoiding the strike of there jaws.

Once again he faced the problem of his back to the cliff edge. If he could strike his opponents even just once then they would be dead. At this point in time however there was so much pressure with there awesome agility and the fact there were two of them against Hydra who had continued taking steps backwards until his back foot had hit the edge of the drop, loose bits of rubble fell to falling off the edge gave him a feeling of anxiety.

The Antmen didn't give up on there relentless pressure, they kept moving forward despite the fact Hydra was now unable to move anymore. Practically trapped. Taking in another deep breath he prepared for there attack and thankfully it worked once more. The first antman charged at him, it's jaws wide open revealing the grotesque venomous glands. Quickly the spearman pulled his body to the left which triggered the second attack... Thankfully both failed, the first flew off the edge of the cliff cut in half by Hydra's sword art and the second like before hand couldn't break past the flurry of his sword art <tribal fury>

Once he was certain both were dead he let out a light sigh and collected the materials. He sincerely hoped Khry would be able to craft him his equipment with what he gathered, after all, this was pretty difficult work. The spearman turned back on himself although headed in a different direction the the way he had come.

It didn't take long before Hydra encountered the next set of antmen, as always there were only a couple of them and they hadn't yet seemed to notice Hydra's movements. "I'll take them by surprise." He mumbled to himself. Carefully the brunette readied his <charge> stance and after taking in a deep breath activated the same sword art as before; .<Tribal Fury>.

Lashing through the air this time the spearman struck so fast even his foe didn't have time to react. Both let out a slight screech which was quickly silenced as they burst into various types of crystals. Once again Hydra received the loot of two tier 2 materials. His main objective was gather at least twenty. This way his friend Khry would most likely be able to craft something for him.

After this Hydra continued on the same path, most likely this area had become a spawn spot for creatures and it was likely he would encounter more along the way.

Not long after Hydra had taken down another pair of antmen, he had started  walking again only to hear the sound of scuttling surrounding him in the forest.  Suddenly three of the creatures jumped out from all sides. "What the?!" Surprised, the young adventurer jumped back as quickly as possible. It wasn't good enough they were about to hit him. Fortunately Hydra's amulet activated, a white bright glow emitting from it which blinded the creatures slightly.

It wasn't much but enough time for Hydra to get out the way and spin around. Already low on energy he readied his <Tribal Fury> Sword art once more. The spearman had taken to long in getting out the way that he had already missed his first opportunity to attack. If these three were to get the upper hand on him, he was unsure whether he would even be able to survive. Meaning that his next attack counted. Taking in a deep breath the spearman rushed forward.

Luckily the deaths of these antmen followed the same as the previous lot. A pattern was beggining to emerge with Hydra activating his <Tribal Fury> skill and cutting all his opponents apart before they had the chance to land a hit on him. As he was in the main part of the forest this time it was a little more messy however. His spear cut through various trees and vegetation spraying foliage everywhere.

After having spent nearly all his energy the young brunette fell to the floor trying to regain his breath. "I should try and avoid any more of these things for a while now." The spearman spoke with a concerned look on his face and was still taking in many deep breaths. If he were to encounter a larger group than three he might easily meet his peril. Taking an hour or so to rest the young man eventually stumbled back onto his feet. It was time to do some more searching again.

Time passed as Hydra continued to traverse through the dense forest. The trees stood towering above him, the eerie thing was despite how giant this place was there was a lack of any real life, and all that could be heard was the sound of scuttling which echoed through the place. "I should begin to search for materials soon." Hydra mumbled. The floor he walked on was uneven and beggining to pick up in gradient so that a small hill was forming. Hydra just grunted but otherwise moved onwards.

"I wonder what Allania and Nikodemus are up to these days." He thought. The last time he had seen them was when the crescent moon guild had been formed only to shortly crumble into ruin afterwards. Since then Hydra had not seen either of them. It was often in his daily routine to think back on his old friends, they just vanished. Well other than Khrysaor that is but even he didn't know where they went. Sighing to himself Hydra leant again the tree to catch his breath once more. He felt tired, then again he always felt quite tired.

When Hydra opened his eyes again the dark loomed on the horizon. "How long was I out." He ruffled his hair and glanced around. Nothing had really changed and everything was still where it was, except for an intricate pattern engraved into the tree opposite him. "Huh?" Quickly the spearman crawled over puzzled as to what it might be.

There seemed to be an opening in the trunk. Carefully the spearman levelled his head in line with the ground and took a peek inside. A grey colored object sat in the centre. Slowly Hydra reached his hand in and took the object out. It looked like a normal stone however it felt much different. Also why would it be placed in such a strange way. "I guess I can use this as a material." The spearman said storing the stone in his inventory. After this he picked himself of the ground. "I'll need to find a few more materials then I can call it a day... Perhaps more of these strange patterns are lying in wait here." He pondered beggining to look around for more.

After a while of stumbling around his general vicinity, it appeared there were no more intricate patterns carved into any of the tree trunks. Letting out a sigh the young adventurer began to stroke his chin wondering what to do next. He didn't fancy facing off any more antmen for the time being. He still needed to allow his health and energy to regenerate. "Looks like I have to keep searching." He mumbled a little fed up of the prospect. Still at least if he were able to gather enough of them then Khry would definitely be able to craft his new armor and weaponry.

Twilight had recently come out to play, whilst Hydra wasn't so fond of this place at least someone was enjoying themselves. She buzzed around happily circling the towering trees and dive bombing to the floor. It was nice to see her having so much fun and the young adventurer couldn't help but smile and feel a sense of ease.

Once Twilight had finished messing around Hydra headed deeper into the forest. Unfortunately not a whole lot of the scenery changed. The tree's themselves were growing slightly sparser, possibly indicating he was reaching the end of the woodland now. "It'll be interesting to see if there is anymore scenery to this place." A little further up ahead a few creepers caught the young adventurers eye. Slowly he wandered over and much to his expectations the creepers were just ordinary. Although they did lighten the tree up a bit reminding the spearman of christmas and how close it was getting.

"I'll need to gather some gifts for the friends I have left here." The young adventurer suddenly realized. He imagined the suicide rate might pick up around this time of year. Unfortunately it was no longer rare to hear of players throwing themselves of bridges, cliffs or finding other ways to put them out there misery. Hydra doubted that anyone he knew would have gone down that path but then again it was always a possibility.

Hydra decided he would search out some more antmen after this, however for now he would try to find one more material. Taking yet another look at his HP and energy gauge it appeared they had both fully replenished. "Thank goodness." Hydra said letting out a breath of air. Apparently the closer one got to the mountains the more antmen he risked appearing, so every little bit counted.

*Crack* "Err?" Hydra glanced down at his foot, it appeared he had just snapped a twig. Squinting the spearman suddenly realized that it was no ordinary piece of wood. This was colored black, compared to the deep brown the rest of the forest was coated in. Slowly reaching down the spearman picked the inanimate object up. It felt incredibly light although he wasn't entirely sure what it was. "No matter I can use this as a material." Hydra mumbled placing it into his inventory.

(My bad, was at 481 hp not 500 on last post.)

After another few miles of walking Hydra eventually reached the base of the mountains. "Wow..." There were many mountain ranges in SAO however each unique and different in its own way, there was even a volcanic floor only two below this one. As usual these giants just loomed over the whole floor giving him the chills. Suddenly the sound of scuttling came from behind him. "Oh no." Hydra sighed and turned to face the antmen who had probably just spawned in. Three of them stood before him ready to attack.

Thankfully Hydra no longer needed to worry about the cover of the forest. He was out in the open. Reading the antmen's attacks quite well he dodged all of them. There relentlessness meant he struggled to get his own attack in however. The brunette would need to find the ideal time to strike his foes, the question was when that opening would present itself.

Readying himself the Antmen charged him once more. Hydra avoided the attack from each one and that was when an opportunity presented itself he counter attacked. Twirling his spear above his head he then ran in between the three antmen killing them all instantly. These things were as fragile as they looked to the spearman, "I suppose they become more powerful with strength in numbers."

As quickly as possible he collected the three materials that had been dropped before continuing on to follow the base of the mountain. The setting sun on the horizon indicated that the day way drawing to an end and he would need to return to the second floor soon. "I still need more." Hydra said in a tired and drawn out voice despite the fact he had been sleeping not long before hand. Suddenly up ahead a group of three more Antmen suddenly appeared. Hydra gritted his teeth and continued moving forward.

These antmen were incredibly fast, however Hydra just managed to evade the attacks they were trying to dish out. This time he was also fortunate to be able to counter attack right off the bat. The young adventurer activated <Tribal Fury> again killing all the antmen in an instance. "Good fight" He said beginning to get out of breath once more.

After two fights his energy had already depleted by over half. I should try and get back soon he commented upon seeing the shadows around him growing. Not that there weer many shadows, it was hard to see much in the forest thanks to the tree's covers. Although it didn't really impede his vision at all. What Hydra did take note of, was the fact he just faced two groups of antmen at once. There rate of spawn and amount was increasing. Getting a little worried at the prospect Hydra turned around heading back towards the forest and the teleport gate.

The walk back was quiet, Hydra didn't encounter any more of the antmen although he did feel a little nervous as it was getting dark. "What if these things are nocturnal." He pondered thinking back to a documentary on ants trying to recall the information. Trying to shake the worry off he continued going deep into the forest. Once again the dreaded sound of scuttling echoed through the forest.

Hydra readied his spear, the fights in the forest were far harder than out in the open. Closing his eyes he tried to senses the antmen's movement. At first he felt nothing but suddenly all three jumped out from above. "An ambush?!" Hydra quickly rolled backwards as all three hit the floor with a thud. Ant's could fall from huge heights and remain unharmed. "Curses." Hydra said. Lashing out with Lyrica's fang, his blade was quick but not accurate and missed all three.
