[F19:SP] The Quest for Col

Recommended Posts

Floor nineteen was easily his favorite floor. Walking through the crowded streets of Ralberg felt like something out of a dream. The various gardens and fountains that littered the city only added to the overall feel of tranquility that surrounded the settlement. Seul probably could have spent an entire day exploring the place, but that wasn't why he was here now. Today wasn’t the time to play tourist and what he really made the journey for was col. Lots and lots of col. Business as a performer was slow and ironically unreliable as a way of earning a living. The only choice left (other than trying to pawn off his equipment) was hunting down the beasts that inhabited the land. Truly a task he was built to fulfill.

Why the sudden need for money? It’s simple really. The plan was to get a house; something preferably larger than a shack and located on this floor. Most players couldn't afford to own their own housing on floor eleven let alone nineteen, but some were lucky and better off for buying a place of their own. He was tired of living out of an inn room for months at a time, spending nights in the back of shop, or being forced to live out in the wilderness at a makeshift camp. This trip would see an end to all of that.

After making sure his equipment was in order he made his way through the gates and into the fields. At least he would be able to take in a little more of the scenery before having to fight as he passed by the few plots of farmland located outside of Ralberg. Some NPCs would occasionally stop their work to wave and he would respond with a wave of his own, only solidifying his desire more to live in such a peaceful place.

***

Once he was a good distance away the plains seemed to come to life with small critters scurrying about and overshadowed by the hulking monsters which would serve as his targets. It was best to start things off easy, but the fauna on this particular floor usually clustered together in packs in this area. Getting one on its own would likely have been more trouble than it was worth so fighting a couple at once was all he could do.

A small herd of distorted Bison-looking animals were grazing nearby and with any luck they'd go down easy. Seul unhooked the glowing sword on his back and got into position. The system soon took over his actions and forced him forward, hitting each of the Bison in turn for decent damage and leaving them dazed for a short period of time.

The fight was off to a good start, but letting up now would have been a mistake. Seul ran at one of the closer beasts and lashed out with his blade but the weapon bounced off a portion of the monster’s skin that seemed to be purely made of stone. No damage had been inflicted by his action and it seemed the only thing his attack was good for was pissing it off. The Bison herd finally regained feeling in their limbs and focused their red eyes on the boy; letting out a mighty, unified roar as they agreed to chase him down. They each took turns running at him, but the actions of the creatures was too choreographed and easy to avoid with a simple dodge roll.

Once the final one passed he was reduced to a kneel with his sword plunged into the dirt. The four Bison scrapped their hooves against the ground in anticipation, but we're probably in for a surprise as Seul began to run in the opposite direction. He wasn't getting killed today; at least not if he could help it.

Of course things were never that easy.

He ran for as long as his legs would carry him, but it wasn't enough. The Bison possessed an endless supply of energy or at least a lot more than that of a human since they never let up for a second in their pursuit. Each one rammed him with its horns, tearing away a chunk of his health and sending him to just above the halfway mark in the process. Seul’s eyes widened as the usually full green bar depleted, but before he could retaliate the monsters sent him hurling through the air and rolling through the dirt an extra couple of meters as he landed just to add insult to injury. Attacking wasn't an option anymore. If he wanted to survive this fight he would need to go on the defensive and wait for openings before doing anything so reckless again.

“If only she was here… Then I wouldn't need to hold back at all.”

After grabbing Maiden’s Kiss and rolling to his feet Seul entered the parry stance and waited to be attacked by the herd. His coat had healed a good portion of his health, but it wasn't anywhere near enough to recover from the damage the Bison group had done. He needed time to rest, so as long as the skill remained active the damage they dealt would be minimal at best.

Just as he had planned the monsters charged him one by one, each time ending with a parry and riposte to render their limbs useless once again. If he was going to attack this was his chance, but they seemed like they would be immobile for a little while so taking a moment to catch his breath wasn't too dangerous.

I guess I see now why people party up all the time for this sort of stuff. I don’t want to imagine what would happen if I didn't have this armor equipped.

It was time to show the Bison just who they were messing with. The greatsword began to glow even brighter than usual with a golden light, displaying the holy properties of the metal as Seul walked toward the stunned creatures. Six sweeping slashes through the group was enough to leave then all critically wounded. The fight was far from over, but at least things would be easier moving forward. Now it was just a matter of trying to out outlast their onslaught of tackles. It was easier said than done, but he couldn't afford to die in a place like this.

One thing was clear from this though: He'd need a little more help if he wanted to make some money off of hunting. The fact that there was a chance of these things not dropping any loot left a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. All of this was a gamble and risking his life for nothing didn't sit right.

With the monsters finally being able to move again he couldn't take take his chances with attacking and decided to parry yet again. It would be some time before justified riposte would trigger again and until then it was best to just protect himself against their attacks. The Bison each rammed at him and took turns getting deflected by the parry. His energy was starting to run low, but there wasn't much he could really do about that now. Flame aura would just have to lower their health a little more before he could take his chances with striking back.

This wasn't fun anymore. He wanted to make it out alive to see her again. Living through this was proving to be more difficult than he imagined and if he made it it'd make him think twice about trying to do everything solo. The stars would just have to guide him.

Letting the battle drag on any further would be too risky. He couldn't parry this many enemies for long even with recovery equipped. Killing them was the only option. “With this blessed sword, I release you from this life!” It sounded cooler in his head. Working on a cool phrase to shout was next on the list.

The Bison drew near and this would likely be his last chance to attack before getting overwhelmed. With Calamity Disaster charged up he performed six swings through the herd, draining the last of their health with a single move. The creatures exploded into pixels around him and with that the struggle was over. All that was left was to collect the loot!

“Not bad at all.” His fears had been quelled as the rewards screen faded from his vision. The herd was actually worth quite a bit of col it seemed, but he wasn't in a rush to fight another one anytime soon.

A break was definitely needed now. A nearby hill seemed like a good place to rest or at least Seul thought so as he dragged his sword to the top. He plunged the weapon into the dirt and let out a soft sigh while watching the fields. More beast herds ran about, making the whole scene look like something out of a fantasy anime. Floor nineteen really was something. If he kept trying he would be able to get that house and be able to live out the rest of his days happily in Ralberg.

“Maybe I should keep going… The col I got from the Bison was nice, but it'll barely buy me a single room hut.”

He had heard there were ruins toward the center of the floor. It sounded like a promising place to find some sort of loot, but at what cost? Going alone would possibly lead to death.

Still, the only way to know was to try. Wandering through ruins for a while sounded like fun anyway so Seul grabbed his blade before trying to determine which way would lead to the center. It was pretty easy; he figured since the town was at the edge of the floor he just needed to keep walking along the original path he took to get to the plain and he'd eventually hit ruins.

***

After passing over a final hill, the ruins of an ancient civilization sat out in the open just begging for a brave explorer to discover what secrets lied within. A quick glance at his status showed that he wasn't exactly in the best shape to go in just yet. Maybe with a few more minutes he'd be able to survive a battle if there was a need to fight. Although excitement was running through his thoughts, rushing in recklessly just wasn't an option.

Vines and other growths had overtaken not only the crumbling outer walls but most of the buildings within the city as well; clearly showing that some sort of horrible Calamity destroyed the people of this land in a past that has long since been forgotten. Seeing the ruins in such a state was eerie, there was no argument about that, but Seul found some solace despite the overwhelming sense of loneliness exuding from the area. Walking along the dilapidated roads served as a good contrast for the bustling cities he was used to hanging around. The fact that nature ruled here rather than humanity made an experience like this only that much more alluring. At least in his own mind anyway.

***

“This looks like a residential area.”

Although they were worn down by time, the infrastructure in this section of the city didn't appear to have been too fancy to begin with. If he had to guess, this was probably where the common people lived. Now that he thought about it he'd only seen the buildings from the outside. Perhaps going inside would be worthwhile, if only to offer a place to rest for a bit before moving on. He chose a two story house that looked to be in… Acceptable condition. As long as it didn't cave in on his head while inside he would be satisfied.

Breaking into the house wasn't a challenge. The door literally fell off its hinges as he tried to pull it open. Somehow regardless of where he went, Seul seemed to cause a scene whenever he entered a new place. Aside from a few holes in the roof the house was in an okay state. The immediate room didn't look like it had anything of importance, so he decided to move upstairs to continue the search.

Upstairs was just as bad. They appeared to be bedrooms, but with the years of weather tearing away at it the rooms looked about as comfortable as sleeping outside without a campsite. Things were looking pretty bleak. Maybe it was best to just give up and head home for the day. But…

“Who's there?"

The floor had creaked behind him and as an instinct his hand shot up to grip the hilt of his blade. After spinning around he was ready for a fight, but standing in the doorway was… A little girl? She appeared to be around ten years old, but something was off about her with horns on her forehead and patches of stone where skin should have been. Like the Bison from earlier she seemed affected by whatever curse was placed on this floor.

Of course he wasn't going to hurt her. He just wanted to leave now, but stepping toward the girl was ultimately a mistake. She didn't speak and instead cried in a terrified shriek. Pounding came up the stairs and in the next moment a woman in the same state as the girl barged in, wielding a wooden sword.

Seul managed to draw his blade and use Galaxy Destroyer, ripping off more than half the woman’s health before she could advance.

The woman didn't take kindly to that at all. She motioned for the little girl to leave with a grunt before turning her attention back to the player. Seul wasn't going to let her get close, at least that was the plan anyway. He swung wide with his greatsword, but missed, plunging the weapon into the wall. Fighting in an enclosed space like this really wasn't good for huge weapon users, but there wasn't much he could do about that now aside from being careful not to bring the building down on both their heads.

He had to leave before the child could return with back up! He tried making a break for his weapon but the woman tackled him to the floor instead, driving her own sword into his gut as he laid there. Despite being made of wood the blade managed to deal a good amount of damage while keeping him pinned at the same time.

Using what strength he had he wrapped his fingers around the sharpened piece of wood. There was no pain (something he was honestly thankful for) so pulling the weapon out was a relatively easy task. Once he was free next on the list was the woman who was still currently on top of him. He kicked with his legs and swatted near her face with a few punches, eventually driving her off altogether.

There wasn't any time to rest though. Seul sprang to his feet and ran for his sword, releasing it from its spot in the wall and instead directing it toward the woman. She was low on health but showed no sign of stopping her assault any time soon. In the time the player spent regaining his footing the woman managed to grab her sword as well. They were at a standstill and would remain so until she made the first move. She lunged at him in a downward swing but he simply blocked the strike with the flat of Maiden’s Kiss.

Seul attacked with an upward swing but the woman jumped out of the way of his weapon before running toward him. She made a forward stabbing motion with her sword. Twisting away from her allowed him to dodge the attack, but once again they were placed at a stalemate while trying to land hits on each other. How she was surviving this long was beyond him. Usually he was good at fighting enemies one on one, but he just chalked this instance up to it being the floors learning curve.

Floor nineteen was one of the highest level floors after all. If anything it would have been a surprise to not have difficult mobs to fight. He was a frontliner, so being able to fight up on the frontline was a necessity from here out. Once he was done here maybe he'd have to actually return back to town just to play things safe.

Seul swung again, this time at a horizontal angle, but the woman was just too fast. Sometimes he hated not having accuracy, but there was nothing he could really do to improve the situation aside from getting the precision mod. Even then the increase would only be finite at best. Just another wacky design of the fame developers he figured to limit characters from being all powerful. Well, as long as he was wble to keep himself alive he would try nit to complain too much.

The woman of course wouldn't let his failed attack pass by without trying to retaliate. She got in close and made another stab with her sword, only to have it get knocked away by his superior sized blade. Neither side was going to land a hit at this rate. The player just needed to get in one more lucky hit in order to end this anyway, so it was obvious she wasn't going down without putting up a fight.

“Enough!”

The fight had drawn on long enough. Seul was done playing around now. The sword in his hands flared to life with a golden light, signaling what was to come. Pivoting on his heel, Seul spun around with his blade outstretched like a whirlwind. The woman attempted to guard but it was already too late. The sword art, Cyclone, powered up by the holy properties of Maiden’s Kiss tore into her body four consecutive times and finished off the remainder of her health in the process. Soon after she exploded into a shower of pixels, leaving the room silent once again.

He let out a heavy sigh while dropping his sword to the floor. It had been a hard fought battle, but once again he came out on top. Too bad no one was there to see it all unfold. Not that showing off was his main objective, still it was nice to be recognized every now and then.

“Guess it's time to call it quits for today.”

He said out loud to himself while placing his sword back on his back. Overall he had obtained a pretty good haul from hunting down the monsters on this floor, more than he was used to receiving at any given time. It wasn't as much as he hoped to gain, but it was a nice start toward saving his col for a house.

Seul made his way toward the door frame of the bedroom and carried himself down the stairs to the entrance. It was still day time out, but it had felt like he had been gone for hours now. Getting back to Ralberg before nightfall would take priority above all else since the monsters during the day proved to be enough of a challenge as it was. The creepy stalkers of the night would probably give him a real run for his money, especially with the lack of visability.

Glancing around the street showed that it was still as deserted as the last time he was outside. At least it looked that way. If the ambush from that girl and the woman was anything to go by there were probably more of their kind lurking about the ruins. It wouldn't surprise him at this point if thousands of them lived within the city’s walls. When he got back to town he'd have to look into just what had happened to this place to cause it to become this way.

With the coast clear though he stepped into the light and began to retrace his steps in the direction he thought the gates were. With everything in disarray it was hard to tell if he was going the right way, but he figured if he just kept walking he'd hit the perimeter of the settlement eventually. When that happened he'd just have to follow along the wall to the exit.

The sun had touched down on the horizon by the time he located the town gates. With a final parting look back at the ruins he stepped into the fields and began the walk back to town. Even though the environment wasn't the friendliest one found within the float castle he was convinced it was on the nicer end of the spectrum. The beauty of the land alone was enough to make him want to just live there for the rest of his days. Maybe after he retired from the frontlines he would actually make it a reality.

“I wonder if Anemone would live with me if I asked her to. I mean we've only been out once, but it shouldn't be too weird, right? Right? ...Ah, what am I freakin’ saying? Of course it'd be weird you dumb, dummy! If you keep thinking weird things like that you're going to scare her away and she'll never talk to you again.”
