Now that Shield seemed to have drawn them out a little, he took a proper stance, preparing for what would inevitably be the beginning of the end. He smirked from one face to the next, admiring their nearly depleted health gauges.

"Well looks like you're finally come out of your shells," he said, prompting a protest from the shelled creature on his back. "No offense Norbert."

The turtle snorted, and with that, he sprang into action, bringing down his axe into the head of the strongest thief. The others, rallying around him, struck out with their weapons, but two of them as soon as they connected burst into a swirling mass of pixels, the last of their health having been depleted. The remaining two took a step back away from Shield, but one already had a gaping wound on its head, and only a matter of seconds before it would follow its two companions in death.

Nothing left for the dying cutthroat to lose, it rushed forward, plunging its dagger into Shield's chest and bursting into a cloud of red, swirling motes that disappeared into the air. Following his friend, the last remaining thief charged. His blade and Shield's axe both flashed in the dim light of the cave, and with one more flash of red pixels, the thief vanguard was no more.

Shield straightened up out of his combat stance and took a deep breath, glancing around for any stragglers. Seeing none, he set himself down the downward path that led deeper into the earth.

Well, if that was all of the rogues I needed to worry about, that means Cassin shouldn't be far from here...

Though he could have called out, Ali did caution him that it was by speaking rather than sneaking that he and his brother had fallen into such unfortunate circumstances.

Keeping his voice down and his footsteps soft, Shield made his way down the sloping tunnel. The light from the front, mainly provided by a few stationary oil lamps, grew dim and inconsistent, provided by the occasional sconce in recesses in the walls. The winding tunnel led him to what appeared to be a sort of common room where bedrolls and discarded bones from food littered the floor. Since the remains from food items dissipate after consumption, this was purely a cosmetic effect of the room, but it certainly added to the ambiance of the little den of thieves.

To his left, Shield heard a rustling, and what seemed to be breathing. He turned his head, and sure enough, there in a small alcove in the cave wall, a man was tied to a chair, gagged, and blindfolded. Shield rushed over to him as quietly as he could.

"Before I untie you, I need your word that you will not speak," he breathed, not wanting to make any more noise than was necessary.

The started at the sudden words and the sounds of an approaching stranger, hesitating but eventually nodding in agreement. Shield breathed a little easier knowing that the man would not create extra noise and went about untying him.

"Ali sent me," Shield said, but noticed the reaction in the man, having to cut him off with a hiss as he opened his mouth. "Do not speak. We need to get out of here."

Having untied him, the man stood and grasped Shield's hand in a silent gesture of thanks. He motioned for Cassin to join him and made his way back up the sloping path to the entrance of the cave. As they rounded the last bend into the entry way, they were forced to a halt, the exit being blocked by two returning thieves.

Shield threw out his arm to stop Cassin, staring down the familiar masked faces of those he had slain on his way in.

"Just stay back," Shield warned Cassin. "I can handle these clowns, but you need to stay out of the way."

Even as he said so, both thieves came bounding in, leaping over the overturned barrels that lined the walls to rush in behind Shield in pursuit of Cassin.

So this is all one big game of capture the flag, is it? Fine by me.

Flipping through his inventory, he summoned his axe back out and used it to clothesline the first thief that came his way. Although dealing next to no damage, it put them on the defensive. The prone thief kipped up onto his feet, and both of the attackers shifted their focus to Shield, making short, singular jabs with their daggers.

That looked like the same attack that the one thief used to stun me earlier. Clever move, but you'll have to do better than that.

Not wanting the battlefield to be uneven, Shield next took a swipe at the uninjured thief, taking the top couple of pixels off of his health gauge.

Much better... I guess...

Their stun move having failed, the thieves switched tactics, aiming for quantity over quality of attacks. They sent in a hail of strikes, each sinking harmlessly into Shield's body. The thieves exchanged glances, unsure of what else to try. Cassin finally spoke, his shock obvious through his tone.

"Stranger, are you made of steel?" he said in awe of Shield's defensive prowess.

"Well, tanks are made of metal," he said with a sigh, displeased at how little damage his opponents had sustained so far.

"Tanks?"

"You're welcome."

Shield frowned, trying to decide if a new tactic was necessary, but unfortunately, until he got lucky with an attack and his opponents got unlucky, all he could do was chip away at them.

Shield lowered his axe to his side, testing if he could bait the thieves into an attack. Though their eyes narrowed suspiciously, they were not about to turn down an opening just yet. With an upward swing, he caught the first thief under the chin with the barb of his axe, ripping a wound in the skin that proceeded to bleed out red particles, despite the fact that very little damage had registered as of yet.

Not wanting to be outdone, both thieves attempted a quick strike at Shield's rib cage, but the attacks backfired, taking chunks out of both of their health gauges. They sprang back, realizing now that they had miscalculated their opponent.

"They strike you, and yet they are the ones harmed?" Cassin gasped, his hands digging into his own thick, curly hair. "What sorcery is this, my friend? Are you some sort of dark  or evil wizard?"

"Only with numbers," he replied, keeping his eyes forward, unfortunately missing the look of confusion that Cassin gave him in response.

Capitalizing on the hesitation of his opponents, Shield stepped forward, striking at the thief who had yet to bleed any, seeing as he was currently the hardier of the two. His axe swept through the sneak's arm, but did no amount of lasting damage to the target. With Shield pressing the attack, the thieves fell back and regrouped, switching sides as they rushed in to counter attack.

Their knives flashed in the light from the dim oil candles, striking numerous times, but each strike failing to do any lasting damage except to the dealers. Four of the eyes on Shield were lined with anger, their owners enraged at how little impact their attacks had. The other two were full of shock, still likely believing Shield to be some sort of sorcerer.

Shield's eyes darted to the exit then back to Cassin behind him before coming back to the rogues that blocked their path. He was not worried for his own safety. It was the tag along NPC that worried him. There were a number of games that he had played where NPCs had the fragility of a water balloon, perishing as soon as any hit was landed on them regardless of the strength of it. Making a break for it without finishing the enemies off seemed risky, so he focused his efforts on the thieves.

He waded forward, brandishing his axe in wide, sweeping motions to target the weaker of the two thieves, but he proved too nimble to be caught by any of these attempts. He and his comrade struck back at Shield, but the axe had created too much of a buffer for them to be able to push through and land an actual blow.

This wasn't working. Shield knew that he wasn't going to be able to deal proper damage to them unless they were landing their hits. His axe was an effective weapon, but only so in his hands if he was making very precise hits. He decided to try to draw them into an attack, acting as if he was going to try to make a break between them by rushing forward. The thieves' eyes narrowed as Shield kicked off towards the exit. They wound up their dagger hands and struck with rapid succession, driving the points into Shield as many times as possible.

Shield stopped in his tracks, watching their health slowly dwindle, and the first of the two dropped below the fated half way point into the yellow. Knowing his best bet was to keep the battle balanced, he turned to the other, whose hands were still busy throwing knife jabs, and took advantage of his focus, using the distraction as cover to make his own attack. The barb of his axe flashed in the oil light before disappearing into the thief's temple.

The ferocity and precision of the strike with his axe and the damage that both had sustained drove the thieves back, each one leaping towards the barrel-lined wall on their side of the cave. Shield looked back and forth between them, his stern jaw set as he tried to calculate if an escape would be possible. He lunged, swiping at the thief on his right. It returned the attempted strike, but it was unwilling to let Shield get close enough to make either attack a real threat. The remaining thief tried to sneak up from behind him, but as soon as Shield turned back around, it made a panicked swipe at his face and leaped away again.

As much as Shield wished that an early escape would be possible, it was unlikely. The thieves may have been weak, but they were quick. There was no guarantee of being able to get his charge out safely without a stray dagger popping his potentially fragile frame. As if they had read his mind, the thieves began creeping side ways, their eyes still trained on Shield, moving themselves closer to their once prisoner, Cassin.

"Oh, no you don't" Shield growled, jumping back to block their routes to the innocent bystander.

The thieves leaped into the air, springing off of their corresponding walls to circumvent the defense that Shield had mounted in their path. Shield pushed Cassin to the ground, standing over him to be able to offer protection from all angles. The still bleeding thief managed to veer off course, bounding away back towards the entrance to prevent any escape. The second was less fortunate, catching the edge of Shield's axe before it could manage to divert his momentum away from the original target.

With still no vocal sounds to speak of, the thief fell to all fours and scrambled out of reach, running like a monkey, hunched on all fours until it was back in the company of his remaining ally. He sat there, crouched, with his dagger out in front in defense.

With a safe distance between the combatants now, Shield reached down and helped Cassin to his feet. The man brushed himself off, still visibly shaken from being pushed to the ground so suddenly.

"Are you okay?" Shield asked, looking him up and down, worried that he may have accidentally cut into the few hit points the NPC likely had to begin with.

"I am right as rain," replied Cassin. "You I shall be even righter than that once we are out of here. If only there were- My friend! Behind you!"

In the moment Shield had taken to assess Cassin's condition, he had taken his eyes from the entrance. Turning around just in time to see them close the last of the distance, two daggers began a three strike volley. Each blow hit, but as Shield might have predicted, only his attackers felt the sting from them. Still, they did not retreat, instead, pushing Shield to the ground and vaulting over him.

Shield swung wildly as he fell, failing to connect, as did the unfocused counter attacks as the bandits left Shield behind altogether, running beyond the edge of his vision as he toppled. There was a shout followed by calls for help. Hitting the ground, Shield scrambled back up into a seated position leaning back on his hands. He sat up just in time to see the last of Cassin's face disappear around the bend in the corridor, the captive being carried like a sack of potatoes.

Shield growled, pulling himself back onto his feet and sprinting down the hall after them. occasionally, he would see flashes of a loose-fitting pant-leg or the hand belonging to the thief that took up the rear, but it was only a matter of time until he caught them. This was not a big tunnel. Unless he had missed a hidden passage along the way before.

That question was answered for him as soon as he found the common room at the end of the tunnel. As he rushed into the room, a tapestry on the far wall swished back into place. Cursing again under his breath, he rushed at the wall, bursting through the fabric into a dark corridor. There were knives waiting for him in the dark, and he retorted with his axe, but the darkness obscured their vision enough that no one person was able to land a solid hit, that is until a flash of red light erupted in the wake of one of Shield's blind slashes.

The only other thing that Shield could distinguish in the dark aside from the retreating font of red was the voice of Cassin, which continued to cry out and wail as someone picked him back up and made off into the darkness. Stumbling along the way, Shield ran his axe along the wall, using it as a guide to make sure he was not straying too far to one side or another in the dark.

As Shield stumbled after them in the dark, his foot caught on a stray stone, and with his eyes unable to see the world around him, the only thing he was able to see were the stars that burst into his vision as his face cracked against the ground. Apparently, his fall was clearly audible in the dark, because a moment later the thieves were on top of him like hungry wolves.

He flailed out in the darkness, lights still winking in front of his eyes, but the only weapons that found flesh were daggers, and their owners were already bounding away invisibly through the dark before Shield had a chance to regain his feet.

"Cowards!" he bellowed after them.

The close echo of his voice trailed down the hall and vanished, and he hoisted himself back onto his feet to resume his pursuit through the pitch black of the tunnel.

A light danced in and out of view as the dark tunnel twisted and turned. Shapes of fleeing thieves ran across it here and there, and there was an occasional flash of red. Shield guessed that he had struck one thief across the face and that the bleed damage was only visible as it glanced back to see hos close Shield was.

The light danced closer and closer, lending highlights to the once shapeless cave walls. They were rough and uneven, either hewn from the bedrock or naturally occurring, but definitely not worked with any degree of skill or finesse.

As Shield burst out into the light, two daggers came crashing down on him with whirlwind speed. He struck out blindly, his eyes unable to adjust to the light even enough to tell what direction the strikes came from. It was not until the thieves had completed their sword art that he could make heads or tails of their positioning, and exactly as one might have guessed, they seem to have simply been waiting on either side of the door.

On order to set up their ambush, however, they had to set down Cassin, who seemed to be scrambling to his feet on the other side of the room. This space seemed to be a barracks, lined along the walls with makeshift hammocks that seemed to be made of cheep and fraying canvas. Shield took a quick inventory of the area, counting out exactly six hammocks lining the walls. He turned back to the thieves and grinned.

"So, in your attempt to give me the slip and buy yourselves some time, you made a little slip up," Shield said.

The rogues made to reclaim Cassin, but Shield swiped across their path with his axe to cut them off. They parried the attack with their knives, but otherwise halted.

"Six beds," Shield said, straightening up to his full height as he regarded the remaining foes, both of whom were already in the red. "I already killed four. That means nobody else can come and save you."

The thieves looked at one another and then back at Shield. Their eyes continued on to Cassin who was on the far side of Shield. The tank held out his shield arm, using the broad surface to block their view.

"You two don't need to worry about anything behind me," he growled. "The thing you have to worry about is right in between you and your target."

He snapped his wrist, using the momentum to rotate his axe in his hand so that the blade spun around the axis of the haft. As he solidified his grip, axe head facing forward, he held out the weapon towards the last remaining foes.

"Come and get me."

Two sets of eyes narrowed and two daggers flashed, unleashing the same barrage of attacks as before. This time, though, Shield was ready. He threw out his chest, grazing both assailants with his barbed armor, and the weaker of the two burst, exploding into red pixels that swirled around  where the thief had stood and then were gone. Shield made a swipe that missed the remaining one and smiled.

In the stillness left after the death of the penultimate bandit, an ear splitting scream of rage tore the air. Shield was taken aback. It had come from the thief. This was the first vocalization he had heard from them, and he had spent no small amount of time fighting the brigands. The cowled man charged at Shield. He lashed out with his axe, but the blade went through without slowing the attacker in the least.

The dagger that it brought somehow seemed fiercer, or perhaps it was the eyes that backed it. with each thrust, another growl of hatred forced its way from the sneak's throat. Shield couldn't believe what he was seeing. It had eschewed all caution, and as such, took the full punishment from Shield's armor, which slowly drained away all but its last remaining pixels of red in its health bar.

"What is going on?" Shield asked himself aloud.
