[F20:SP] 《Scouting the 20th Floor's Labyrinth》

Recommended Posts

At long last the lengthy process of finding the labyrinth and defeating the Guardian has come to an end. Word had gotten out that the the dungeon was now open to the public to be explored freely upon the defeat of its field boss, meaning map fragments would be the priority. It would be dangerous, that was for sure, but somebody had to fulfill this task if they ever wanted to push the frontline. He was standing at the entrance now, staring up at the tower that loomed above which threatened to pierce even the sky itself.

“Alright… I can do this.” He said while cracking a nervous grin. The preparation now was crucial in order to ensure the success of this mission do Seul opened his inventory to retrieve the food he had bought for this particular occasion. He bit into the steak and scared it down, allowing the effects to kick in before checking the rest of his equipment. This was as ready as he would ever be, so it was now or never.

Things were off to a rocky start. After entering the labyrinth Seul found himself traversing the various hallways and corridors to be a lot easier than he originally envisioned. At least until the monsters showed up. After entering a room two enormous moth mobs descended from their spots on the ceiling to attack! He quickly drew his blade, but when he swung at them they simply floated out of the way of each stroke.

The insect pair circled around him like two hungry vultures, beating their wings and spreading a downpour of sharp scales upon the player like a million tiny daggers. They didn't hit too hard, but he'd need to finish them before anymore showed up.

Seul raised his blade once more and activated the sword art Tempest, waiting for the mobs to come closer before bashing them both in the face with the pommel of his blade. They definitely didn't like that, but there also wasn't much they could do about it in their now stunned state. He just had to keep up the assault while being mindful of how much health and energy he had left. Slipping up now wasn't going to help anyone, but he also had no desire to stay in the labyrinth for longer than he actually needed. Finding the balance was the mark of a good fighter.

The moths could only hiss and make other various noises at the player while they writhed on the ground, trying to use their legs to prop up again. No damage would be sent his way this turn, but it was still weird that the one time he used Evasion the monsters were landing attacks still.

The downed creatures were still vulnerable by the time he managed to charge another sword art. Six strokes from Calamity Disaster tore through the pair of moths and reduced their health to just above the halfway point. scouting out the labyrinth was going to take forever at this rate but Seul just brushed away the thoughts as he retreated in preparation for the inevitable counterattack.

Both moths had regained feeling in their limbs and wings so they took to the air once more to rain down pain on the player who had assaulted them. After seeing the attack for the second time it was much easier to anticipate how to avoid it. Using the flat of his greatsword Seul covered his body like a makeshift umbrella while weaving past any stray scales that happened to get through his defenses. Just pushing a little further should have been enough to end the battle

Once the scales stopped falling Seul raised his sword and swung the blade around six times with the golden metal shining even brighter than it usually did. The holy properties of the sword began to take effect and increase the cutting power of the weapon, making his sword art critically wound the moths just as another pair showed up. The two original monsters were on the verge of death, but the last two were just a little above half now.

The monsters flew off again and flapped their wings, sending the scales again in the player’s direction. With even more ease than before Seul was able to dive between the daggers and avoid getting hit. This was pretty simple. He just needed to keep dodging the attacks while making his own land. That was true of most fights though.

“Alright you overgrown bugs, let's wrap this up sooner rather than later.”

Just like before Maiden’s Kiss began to shine as he charged the sword art Calamity Disaster. The moths floated into melee range and as a result were wiped out with the six slashes from the attack along with the additional holy damage. As usual they exploded into pixels once they died, leaving Seul with no energy and a rewards screen in his face.

Not a bad haul this time either. His luck had really been on the better side as of late when it came to getting good drops. Farming was never something he enjoyed doing, but having some walking around money at his disposal was starting to feel good. If he could maintain that lucky street maybe this scouting trip would turn out more lucrative than he initially thought it would be.

“Well my energy is spent. Better rest up before moving on.” He thought while placing the greatsword on his back.

Once all the loot had been gathered Seul made his way toward a section of the room he deemed safe enough to rest in. It was strange but something about walking through the labyrinth just placed his thoughts at ease. Despite this being a death game, the world the game designers created was incredibly beautiful. The things he had seen up to this point would only be found in one's own imagination, so while he still hated the man behind all this a part of him was grateful to be one of the unlucky few to see the floating castle.

“Now if only I had someone to share this with…”

It was an accidental stop on the train of thought, but now that it was here leaving was difficult. All of these wonderful adventures would be better if shared with others, but every time he tried things never worked out.

Only when he was part of the knights was he able to feel like part of group. Too many cons outweighed the pros of staying with them though and it wasn't like he had any desire to rejoin anytime soon. It was a selfish way of thinking, but what he really wanted was for his sword to protect him above all else. In the not too distant past countless people died because they weren't able to defend themselves. Going out like that seemed like a nightmare, one that he'd never want to experience. Ideally seeing the final floor was the ultimate goal, but with each day that passed the task only felt more unrealistic. Like everything else knows this world it was fake. Smoke and mirrors. An illusion that could easily be shattered with one mistake or by making the wrong person mad. Such was just the world he lived in.

Why was he even up here? He wasn't a scout. He had no part in the last boss fight or the actual process of finding the labyrinth. He was just one person out of the thousands of others that could be doing this right now. But still, here he was. The cold truth was that no one else wanted to have this job. If no one ever entered the dungeon that would mean the end for all of them. Players would have to kiss their old lives goodbye for good and if they couldn't even get past floor twenty what hope was there for clearing the eighty other floors? It was a lot to think about and a huge responsibility, but he would endure it all the same.

“Time to get back to it I guess.”

With his energy back and most of his health he was ready to start looking around again. Almost. First he decided to switch out a piece of his equipment; the evasion armor for the manticore mask.

At least round two was off to a better start than his first battle in the labyrinth. Rather than the last flying blade throwing moth monsters Seul was up against four praying mantis creatures with enormous scythes for arms. Using his own sword he jumped into their group and cut them each open using his strongest area of effect a sword art. Their health depleted to less than half but it was just a stroke of dumb luck that he probably wouldn't be able to pull off again anytime soon. The fickle nature of his weapon was upsetting at times, but in a pinch it was a useful item to have.

The bugs were enraged by the boys actions, taking turns to slice at him. Their movements were slow though so avoiding each bladed arm was an easy task. Now he just wanted to wrap this up sooner rather than later.

The AI of the monsters on this floor was obviously superior to that of ones found on the lower levels. As his oversized blade danced through the swarm they each took turns simply backing out of the path of Seul’s swings. It was frustrating that his movements were so easy to predict, but the same point went double for the bugs.

They might have been tougher to kill, but their choreographed attacks made sure no actual harm would come to those who fight them. As long as a player paid attention the pattern would reveal itself as the battle dragged on. This was the case here as well.

Each scythe that swung his way was easy to deflect using the flat of his sword with the attacks being nullified as the metal clashed. Rinse and repeat that process four times and he was left back at square one; just four monsters in his face and a quickly depleting energy bar floating in the corner of his vision.

  • 4 weeks later...

Once the monsters finally decided to back off it was Seul’s turn to end this. His blade began to glow a bright gold as the holy energy surged within. As he dropped into the stance for a sword art the gold mixed with the light of Calamity Disaster. Six heavy swings in every direction tore through the group of bugs with minimal resistance, leaving behind nothing but pixels and a loot reward screen once all was said and done. Before moving further the young player drove his greatsword into the dirt to serve as a temporary rest post as he mulled over the loot screen.

“Not bad.”

The fruits of his labor were… Decent. At least for now anyway. Having a bit of extra money go spend would definitely be useful and he could probably get something out of the armor and item as well. If not he could always pawn them off to someone else that'd appreciate such things.

After gathering all of the loot it was time to hit the road again. The deeper Seul wandered into the labyrinth the more dangerous his surroundings seemed to become. There was barely even any time to rest before he found himself against the next batch of enemies.

Now a group of four giant ants stood as sentries in the path. He dragged his sword behind him as he ran at their party, but when he swung they burrowed into the dirt, avoiding the attack and effectively escaping his line of sight at the same time. He took on a defensive stance while glancing around the field but then something strange began to happen. The ground shook intensely beneath his feet and probably would have knocked him over if he hadn't jumped away.

In the spot where he was previously emerged the four ants, biting at the air as if expecting their target to still be there.

“So that's how they're going to play then.” He thought while readying his weapon once again.

The Cardinal system must have been on his side today since his damage seemed to be much higher than usual.at first he was hesitant to use the sacred sword for this particular task given its usual low output, but with how quickly he was tearing apart the monsters in the labyrinth his regrets just disappeared.

Six wide sword swings cut into the group of ants, knocking them all below the halfway mark and into the yellow zone on their health bars. Unlike the other monsters they weren't going to just let this slide though. They each took turns gnawing at a different body part for little damage thanks to his high defense and to make the deal even sweeter they were hurt further by the flame aura of his manticore mask adding literal insult to their existing injuries.

Another swing and another miss. He really didn't mind since there was no real risk given he was out healing the damage they could cause. After his attack failed the giant ants returned to bite at him again, just bringing his health back down to where it had been previously. Did they even realize that they were being hurt the more they attacked him? It was silly. Any rational being would have given up at this point but sometimes monsters did not need a reason to do the things they did.

It wasn't something he allowed often but since this was going nowhere fast he allowed his thoughts to wander in the midst of the battle. Mainly to the other frontliners and if any if them had gotten any progress with exploring this place. If they had there surely would have been news about it, right? Probably. Maybe it would have been best to ask once he was done here.

As a whole progress on the frontline had come to a screeching halt after the last boss fight ended. He wasn't entirely sure why though given he didn't show up to the latest floor raid. There were other things he needed to take care of and with him deciding to leave from the knights it seemed best to avoid a fight to give the dust of that choice to settle.

He returned to reality for a brief moment to attempt another attack on the ants but missed. Again. It was starting to feel like he might have spoken too soon about having good fortune now that he was on a missing streak against these stupid monsters. They were incredibly close to dying and couldn't even hurt him if they wanted to so the tedious nature of the fight was starting to whittle down what little patience he had left to spare.

“Now you're just pissing me off.” He said in a flat tone while letting his weapon show off its now well known glow. It would take the last of his remaining energy to unleash Calamity Disaster on the swarm of ants, but would be well worth it as none would survive the devastating six hit critical combo from the greatsword. The ants all exploded one after the other as their health bars depleted to zero, leaving behind just col in their wake this time around. If he kept up this pace be the richest man in Aincrad by the time he was done in the labyrinth. Wouldn't that be something?

For now it was best if he took a break from searching. Even if he wasn't in harm’s way he wouldn't get very far with just nine energy at his disposal. With that in mind finding a safe place to relax was priority number one on the list now.

Further down the path part of the wall had caved in to create a small room that seemed to be void of any monsters. This was where Seul would choose to rest and after entering he went to the far wall to plop down. He was facing the entrance of course as it would have been easy for someone (or something) to come in and take him by surprise of he wasn't careful. Things in this section of the labyrinth seemed relatively quiet though so he was able to ease up just a little while watching his energy bar trickle back to full.

How much further would he need to go just to help find the boss room? He was not sure. Not that there was any other urgent matter he needed to handle at the moment, he just didn't like the idea of being out on the frontier by himself.

The game always seemed eager to throw a curveball at the players and usually when that happened people died. That fact was partially the reason Seul never attended never before seen events and things of that nature. The floor raids generally all operated under the same mechanics with a little deviation every now and then but it came to something like the Rovian Wars event his reluctance (and laziness) were made clear. It might have been cowardly to shy away from things so often, but in his mind it was better to live to fight another day than it was to die as a martyr. Becoming another name on the Monument of Life was not something that would help anyone in the long run. He needed to survive to make sure that others made it out too… Like Anemone. A girl like her getting trapped in this world was something he couldn't stand to watch.

The least he could do was make sure she made it out alive. Then again would she even trust him now that he's orange? They hadn't really talked since the Valentine's day event, but he was sure that she'd understand if the situation was explained in a calm manner.

“Alright… I guess this is enough.” He said as the last of his energy restored to full. It was time to get a move on again and take out some more of the nasty critters that lurked inside this dungeon. After getting to the mouth of the room he peaked around the corner in both directions in turn. Nothing. The cost was clear making it the perfect time to go. He figured everything might get more difficult from here on out so it was best to be prepared for the worse in case of abnormally strong enemies or traps. If luck held out though maybe he'd be able to find a treasure chest.
