[PP-NK-F4] <<Avalanche>> First New Acquaintance (Solomon and Shield) [Complete]

Recommended Posts

Solomon moved to make another hit against the leg of the giant icy thing, its body being affect by several different damaging sources, all of which came from Shield. Quickly, Solomon made a successful hit against the enemy, it shaking the leg but doing almost nothing to the remaining life total. Solomon turned and stepped away from the leg, getting a small sight of shield on the other side. Solomon noticed two things as he glanced around the large icy leg. Shield hadn't been dealt any damage as the arm crashed down on him. The second thing that Solomon noticed was the health bar above the ice beast. Only a fifth of the starting health remained. Solomon had only done two damage or so, but he didn't know that as this was his first fight. He could guess that Shield had done most of the work, which he was truly grateful for.

The end of the battle was easily in sight, but Shield was trying his hardest not to let that get inside of his head. The wound on The Avalanche's leg had already closed, which meant to finish it off, Shield would either need to open a new one or else draw the creature into another attack to trigger Shield's thorns. The unfortunate thing of having two solutions to the problem was that it gave Shield the option to attempt both, and in doing so, not devoting his full attention to either.

He swung his axe, also attempting to keep his body open, but in doing so, he extended himself too far, overbalancing slightly and completely missing the attack that the elemental sent in retort. Instinctively, Shield glanced over at Solomon to check on him, but between the howl and the one or two successful hits he had gotten in, there's no way the boss would switch to the newer player any time soon.

Solomon, his silk shirt making movement extremely easy, backed took several consecutive steps away from the Avalache field boss and made a quick and deliberate step to the right side. However, he found that something was hindering his ability to move rather suddenly. He jumped with only one foot and fell over due to the snow which had engulfed his left foot completely. Solomon was basically stuck in that area, and he would surely be a target if he landed several consecutive hits in a row. The best possible option was to back out of combat. He knew that he could stand behind something while the rest of the battle continued. At the current rate, Solomon would only be pecking at the ultimate health total with barely any damage done. Solomon had made up his mind to get himself behind some form of natural barrier in the nearby area.

Battle: 3 - Miss

Avalanche: HP: 19/100, DMG: 40
MOB: 3 - Miss

Out of the corner of his eye, Shield spotted Solomon get his foot caught in the snow. He knew that the icy foe would not be interested in the other player since he had pulled so much aggro, but the combat seemed to be getting the better of him at the moment. The tank took a swing which bounced off of the boss's leg before diving out of the way of the next attack. He rolled in the snow, the cold substance pressing itself into every crevice in his armor. He came out of the roll between Solomon and the Avalanche, turning to face the would-be threat with his axe out in front of him.

The battle seemed to have reached an impasse. Although Shield would have been happy to let the boss keep striking him, it seemed to either be missing him entirely or hitting with enough precision that it avoided the damage of his thorns. Not to mention his own attacks failed to open the same bleeding wounds that had dropped its health so far in the first place.

Solomon, after having found something like an hole or slight lift in the ground, ran to it and jumped over. It was only 3' deep, which meant he could still see over the dirt while standing there. He stood there, knowing his chances of being targeted now were negligible at best, and therefore focused on something that would give him some knowledge to this game. He might be wise, but he was not knowledgeable to anything that this game had presented thus far. He opened up his profile, the name Solomon popping up in front of him in large blue letters. Under the name, there were some more tabs that he could click on, titled; Skills, equipment, and items. He touched that tab and an inventory of equipment opened up, but there was nothing there. He turned his head to look past the screen in front of him and looked directly at Shield. He wore stuff, specifically a set of metallic looking shirt with spiky things, which might not be the same thing as equipment, but he didn't have a better idea at this moment. It made the most sense if it was something you wouldn't carry, which technically shield wore and didn't carry.

Shield was becoming quite frustrated with the battle by this point. He had been through some interesting standoffs with enemies who refused to go down, but this one was irritatingly stubborn. He dug his foot into the loose ground of the snow and pushed off, sprinting towards his icy adversary. Before he could reach it though, the avalanche clapped its great hands together and icy shards shot out in all directions, spiderwebbing into thick crystals which then solidified into one solid surface: a great, icy shield.

This is bad...

Shield swung and took off a little chunk of the remaining health, but before he could stick the attack, the elemental countered, thrusting the shield at the end of its arm directly into Shield's chest, tossing him into the nearest snow drift. He took no damage from the strike, but in real life, it would have winded him, without a doubt.

Solomon swiped his finger up a tab and decided to check out the tab labeled Skills. When he clicked on that tab with his index finger, he found it also oddly empty. There were slots, but there were only two and there was a lot of open space beneath. Were there meant to be more skill slots? He quickly thought about his past memories after having started to collect them again. Nothing was mentioned about skills in any of his previous conversations with anyone, which would prove to hinder his capability of finding out. He would need to get Shield to explain the idea of skills to him, even if he would have to play a game of motions and expressions, Solomon would get the question across. He found shield to be an honorable man, even if there was some distrust about Solomon's motives when they met. Solomon knew that trust was something that must be acquired as he required it of his apparent friend Atzo, and would therefore prove to shield he could be a man of his own words. Solomon didn't change his expression on his face as he moved to the next tab, which was labeled Items.

The new development of the icy barrier was troubling. The Avalanche now had a barrier to protect it from not only attacks, but also from thorns. If it could continue to attack without striking Shield directly, he was going to have a very hard time knocking off that last little bit of health. He narrowed his eyes, squinting through the untidy hair that drifted across his vision in the slight, stirring breeze.

He charged again, closing the distance he had been thrown only to meet the barrier part way. It was massive. Easily twice his height and half of that distance wide, vaguely kite shaped but faceted like a great ice crystal, which it more or less was. There was no way to get around it, and his attack bounced harmlessly off of it. The crystal shield thrust into the tank, tossing him once again, though he was prepared for the shield bash and despite being thrown back, landing on all fours rather than on his back.

Opening his items tab, Solomon thought he would gaze at yet another empty screen. And in the end, Solomon was by no means wrong. He had nothing besides a vanity item, which was a paper with a weird symbol on it. Words that he could read, but would later find that it was written in a different language, were inside and above the lines. Solomon just closed the menu tab entirely and refocused on how the battle was going. When he looked, now unobstructed by his menu screen, the giant Icy boss thing was still very much alive and still hurling attacks at Shield. Surprisingly the health had dropped a little bit from when he looked away, but it was only a small ways away from it's demise. Solomon shrugged his shoulders as he sat down, putting one piece of his developing puzzle with the next. He would figure out everything that happened, both inside and outside of this "game" and make sense of it in his own way.

Okay, Mr. statistician... think! What are the ins and outs of the new situation?

Shield assessed the new defenses that the boss had adopted and how it seemed to be putting it to use. It was more or less a defensive battering ram, and although it was capable of great force, it was clumsy, primarily for defense, not offense.

Aim is an issue for the boss. It can't see me and hit me at the exact same moment. It has to aim and then hit. That means it's likely either going to more or less miss, or it's going to connect hard. Not much middle ground. Still, it can't hurt me. I'll just have to be persistent.

With that, he leaped into action once again. The Avalanche shrank behind the barrier in preparation for the attack. Shield rolled to the side, coming up along the side of the actual shield, ready and swinging. The elemental leaped back, dancing out of view of the attack, unable to connect with the weak counterattack it had made in its retreat.

As he sat down, he tried to recall bits and pieces from several months, if not a year ago. As he had vivid memories pop back into his head, one caught his attention. Ren had said something about logging on. Solomon didn't know what that meant, but it was certainly a start. He tried to further focus his memories on that day, when Atzo and Ren had met up again. Ren had apparently received the call about the crash before he logged on. Logged onto what? Solomon suddenly perked up, his head held high in the sky. He placed words together from that day, making some sense of his current situation. I gotten a call before i logged on saying you both were in a big wreck... In here or in real life? I may have thrown another player... Solomon stood up, his hands at both sides. He was not in his original world, but had been somehow transported into a similar existence. The people were no longer referred to as people but players and this was a space separate from the "real world". Solomon turned toward Shield, who was still in combat with the icy boss.

The last attack had not landed, but he pressed his attack a second time, ducking around the opposite side of the shield. With a quick swipe, he shaved off yet another fraction of the remaining health.

This is too slow. I need to get in a good hit or get him to attack me with something other than the-

The very shield he had dodged around crashed into him, lifting him off of his feet once again and throwing him almost as far back as the first snow drift he had landed in. This time, however, he did not have as soft of a landing.

I'm really glad pain is deactivated here...

Struggling back to his feet, Shield assessed the new offensive strategy as best he could.

This is still child's play for it. The shield makes it too easy to keep a safe distance... So I have to get rid of it.

Solomon placed a hand on the dirt and swiftly lifted his body weight over the dirt pile, which was also covered in a layer of snow, and then began to walk to Shield while he was still focused in combat. Solomon would have to explain his sudden understanding and in some cases, lack there of, so that Shield could give him the information back that he needed. He already was forming words from his original vocabulary that would hint at this given situation. "Shield, I dwelt on earth, but that is no longer so. Therefore, what will happen at the end of life? What exists? Do we age?" Solomon tightened his muscles when as he continued to speak. His vision was covered in a black canvas, but he would still continue. "What is skill in this game?" Solomon stood several feet away from Shield, making sure that there wasn't any sudden change on his green bar.

As the boss approached cautiously, still protective of its remaining hit points, Shield attacked the barrier directly, sinking the blade of his axe into it. A crack traced its way along the bottom corner where he had struck. It did not break, but that did not discourage his satisfaction.

It's got durability, just like any other item in the game. Good.

The arm wielding the great barrier pulled back to strike. Shield bent his legs, preparing to leap to the side. He was counting in his head, trying to time the attack pattern to learn when the best moments to attack and to dodge would be, when Solomon appeared, speaking what seemed to be actual sentences, and even posing him questions.

"What?" Shield asked before immediately being thrown back by the force of the attack he had momentarily forgotten was coming.

He sailed through the air and crashed into a tree, shaking snow from its boughs that landed with a heavy flump at the feet of the slumped figure of the tank.

Solomon got one word out of Shield before Shield was nailed by the arm of the icy giant. Solomon just watched as shield went into the air, crashing into a tree behind them. He was almost stunned by how quick the attack had been made, not that he had any combat experience to his knowledge that ever resembled anything like this. He pivoted his body, jumping of of the way from the leg that moved faster than something that heavy should move. Solomon then took several steps forward, trying to run, but was somewhat hindered by the amount of snow beneath his feet. Looking up, he saw an extra layer of snow coming down toward him. There wasn't anything he could do before the snow smashed down on his head. However, Solomon brushed it to either side, as he would enter and exit beneath a waterfall every day for the past half a year. Looking down, Solomon could see shield had taken quite the hit, but his health bar was still a nourishing green.

Shield pulled himself out of the snow, shaking off the pillowy substance. It was moments like this that he was glad that pain didn't exist in Sword Art Online. He turned to Solomon and took a quick breath.

"That's a lot of important information," he said, trying to keep an eye on the boss, who was now advancing on them out of the corner of his vision. "I'll be able to answer more fully soon. Suffice it to say that skills make up all of your combat ability. If you have no points in any skills, everything counts as zero, or very near to it. Here."

He opened his menu and turned it towards Solomon.

"Look this over. This might answer a few questions."

With that, he dove forward in the snow, swinging his axe overhand into the center of the oncoming shield. Another crack arched through the surface, though its integrity still held.

Solomon quickly read the menu, all of the pieces in his mind for later analysis. He had no intention of reading up on this during the boss fight, but was more intrigued by watching how combat in this game took place. He quickly caught on that Shield did less damage from his attacks and more damage when he actually was struck... or at least a fair amount. Solomon looked to his weapon in his hand. He would need to choose a weapon as well, but it would have to be something more... blunt. Solomon was already making preferences based on what he saw from this combat, as it was the only form of combat he had seen where the player didn't die. Shield, therefore, had already proven his capability to him. He just needed to show that he would also be capable of great things. Solomon did not want to get in his way and decided to stay next to the tree.

As the avalanche drew back its shield arm, the tank lunged, driving his axe as deep into the shield as he could. More splintering ice, more cracks, but then suddenly, the barrier fell away, pulled back by its owner as a great fist pounded down on Shield from above. He was pinned to the ground by the attack, but the pressure was not enough to take away any of his health.

The Avalanche pulled its hand back to inspect the result of its attack, and upon seeing Shield unharmed, it let out a roar of anger, stamping its great feet against the icy ground. The trees shook, and more snow cascaded down from their otherwise barren boughs.

"Looks like someone is getting a little frustrated," he taunted the field boss.

Truth be told, so am I. This shield is not going to be easy to get through. I need a new strategy...

Solomon watched from the distance as the Avalanche smashed down upon Shield's human form. Shield was temporarily out of view from where Solomon stood, but the health bar still showed, which gave him the idea that Shield hadn't just disappeared. However, when the Avalanche raised it's mighty arm from atop of the snow, Shield was still fully healed with no obvious pixels coming from his body. Solomon sighed as he knew what would come next. The Avalanche, as if in perfect time, stomped it's large foot in rage on the ground, the trees shaking off some extra snow from their branches. Solomon raised his hand as a smaller chunk of snow fell toward his head. The pile of snow broke into several small pieces. Solomon shook his head slightly, some of the snow pixels sticking to his long blue beaded hair. He raised his arm, whipping the extra snow out from the large beaded portion. This would be a tedious action, since it required time, but hey, Solomon might just have the time to do it.

Shield looked around, trying to devise a plan with the limited resources he had available. To his right, he spotted a tree with a much thicker, sturdier trunk. It wouldn't likely break the shield on its own, but there was more than one way to put it to use. He took off at a sprint, or as close to a sprint as he could manage in the heavy snow drifts. The elemental stomped after him, hot on his heels with its long legs.

As he reached the tree, The Avalanche thrust once again with its shield. The tank ducked behind the tree, but he wrapped his axe hand around towards the front, the head of his axe pointing towards the oncoming barrier. With the trunk as a backstop, the axe head drove its way into the shield like a railroad spike, sending deep fissures across its surface, amplifying the existing cracks, and with a deafening smash, shattering the shield altogether.

Stepping from behind the trunk, Shield inched his way closer, his guard up.

"No hiding behind defenses," he said calmly, the enemy's advantage now removed. "You're gonna have to do your dirty work by hand now."
