Shield didn't even manage to make it to the teleportation plaza of Vulcan before he was accosted by an NPC. A haggered man in damaged armor sped from the crowd, his beard wagging with his limping steps. He grabbed the stalwart player by the shoulders.

"Please, sir!" he wheezed. "Bandits-"

Oh, for crying out loud! If there are two things I've seen entirely too much of lately, it's bandits and the ninth floor!

"They're over by the great spire! They've been terrorizing innocents who just wish to find the spoils of the lava plans!" he panted, gesturing towards the spire that Shield had inspected not an hour ago for dungeons. "Please, you must do something!"

A quest window sprang to life, and with a sigh, he hit the "Accept" button. The NPC fell at his feet kissing his boots, which although was a gesture of gratitude in class literature, it turns out is incredibly uncomfortable in modern practice. He peeled himself away from the bowing and scraping warrior before opening up the message board for the floor, sending out an invitation to see if any other players wanted to join him.

If I'm going to be doing more of the same, I may as well do it with someone who wants some experience.

Firing the message off with all of the necessary details including his location, he leaned his back against the wrought iron gate that was the safe zone exit, waiting for a response.

@Aoda

A raven-haired man entered the main settlement of the ninth floor, glancing about at all of his surroundings. Everytime he met with his acquaintance he seemed to be on an abnormally high floor for his level. Dressed in his Emerald Harbinger's cloak, which he found slightly odd to wear, Aoda stepped through the town. The raven wings on it's back seemed a little stupid to him. This animal thing's gotta stop. The lad thought, pulling down the hood of the outfit. At least the symbol was interesting-looking. It consisted of a variety of intricate shapes and objects surrounding a large sun and crescent moon.

His blade, Mangekyo, sat idly on his back, prepared for a battle between anything they duo would need to fight. The noirette searched the scene for Shield, the man who had messaged him. Upon opening it, Aoda read through the quest's description and everything else which he found could be important in the future. It seemed as if they would be fighting a group of bandits. Simple enough, right?

Despite the fact that Shield left his location in the message, Aoda was still having trouble finding his position. Over time, he eventually managed to discover the gate he was supposedly standing buy. As stated, there he was, Aincrad's Immovable Object, leaning against the metal exit. Moving towards the man, he spoke. "Shield. How's it going?"

Shield spotted Aoda, remembering him from their fight with the snake boss on a higher floor. There had been no other responses to his message, so it was safe to assume this is the only one coming. There was not much sense in waiting around for more people.

"It will be excellent once I can be done with this floor," he said with a sigh. "Plenty of worthwhile rewards, but in all honesty, I'm getting a little weary of it. Glad to see you're still in one piece."

He gave the other player a thump on the shoulder with his open hand before turning to the overcast plains and the distant glow of magma and motioning for Aoda to follow him. Maze-like paths wove through the pools of lava that dotted the vast rocky plains. If he had not just gotten back from walking them, Shield would have had a much harder time navigating them, but his now passing familiarity cut the travel time in half.

The rocky spire loomed in the distance long before they reached it, standing out as a black claw that extended above the plains. As the base of it finally came into view, Shield began to make out makeshift tents and moving figures where there had been none earlier.

"Must have spawned in response to taking the quest," he thought aloud before turning to Aoda. "I'm heading in. Same drill as before. Once I howl, you'll be safe. Just hold back until I draw their fire."

Keeping low, he sped forward, hoping to give them as little time to prepare as possible. As he drew near, one bandit began slapping the nearest shoulder and pointing in Shield's direction just as he broke through the edge of the camp. As the other bandits became aware, he was already on top of them. He pulled air into his lungs and let out a roar.

"I'm sick to death of you low-lifes!" rang his voice across the rocky, partly molten plains. "Draw steel!"

Drawing steel is precisely what they did. Four daggers lanced into Shield's chest, but despite the strikes hitting vital spots, the damage barely registered. It was moments like this that had earned Shield his nickname long before he joined Sword Art Online.

"You as well. Of course, I wouldn't expect you to go down so easily." He gave a grin as the man nudged his shoulder. Following the man's order, Aoda walked with him, taking a peak at their hot surroundings as they traversed the fiery terrain. The floor was created to have a volcanic environment. The noirette was a fan of warm places, but this was definitely cutting it.

The tank seemed to know his way around the area, which was quite useful. He must have spent a decent amount of time on the floor if he new exactly where they were heading. "So, we'll be taking on bandits? Don't forget, this quest'll take a little while to complete if I'm our main source of damage. Even with a Sword Art, the most I can deal is 20 health points." It was a good thing the large man had a lot of mitigation. They'd need it.

Arriving at the camp, Shield explained the plan. It was the same as usual. He took their damage and Aoda would try his best to deal enough to kill all four of the opponents. Suddenly, the tank spoke in a booming voice, activating his "Howl" skill. Each of the bandits took notice of this and their aggros immediately locked onto him.

Their knives sank into his armor, but did only the smallest degree of damage to him. This was Aoda's chance to start attacking the enemies. He entered the battle, his blade glowing blood red as he activated a Sword Art, "Farrant Full Moon". He chose an AoE ability, in order to get the most out of his energy used. The blade cut through all four of the bandits, but didn't stop them from targeting the armored player behind him. Aoda backed up, choosing a safe place behind Shield, in case something unexpected happened. I've got enough for one more of these. I should save some energy, just in case.

The battle already well underway, Shield was able to relax a little, falling back a little ways, drawing the bandits away from Aoda so that he would have a clear shot at their backs. As they got closer, he took a swipe at the nearest one with his axe, but the target faded back out of reach before he could complete the swing.

In retort to his attack, four daggers blazed to life, their edges catching fiery glints in the light of the lava pools that surrounded the little rocky oasis around the spire. One by one, the blades cut into him, this time, their wielders taking a chunk of damage from Shield's treacherous, barbed armor. The stumbled back, nursing their hands.

"I wouldn't worry terribly about this fight taking too long," he called out to Aoda, rolling his axe-side wrist as he stared down the now nearly half dead bandits. "If given enough time, they practically kill themselves."

Aoda hadn't taken the man's thorns into account. Looks like he wouldn't be their main source of damage after all. With the bandits dazed from their previous attack, the lad thought it would be the perfect time to strike. He raised his blade, activating the same Sword Art he had used only moments before. The bandits hadn't even noticed him by the time his blade cut through each of them. Gotta love area of effect, right? Luckily, the damage was enhanced, due to a critical strike. Pretty quickly, they'd be finished with the fight and ready to move on.

Although they struggled to get back up, the group of opponents stumbled onto their feet again, readying themselves for another rush against the dank tank. "Get ready, they're coming for round two." He said to his comrade, preparing himself as well. Shield was a capable player who had surely already recognized the incoming attack from the bandits.

Despite it draining the last of his energy, Aoda had managed to put a considerable dent in their remaining health. They had dropped into the yellow portion of their health bar, which was honestly more than Shield could have asked for.

"Well done!" he called out.

Unfortunately, he was not the only one who had noticed the effect of the attack. The bandits had begun to realize that damage was coming at them from two sides, and that one source of damage was too dangerous to attack. Their eyes shifted one pair at a time from Shield to Aoda. In response to the sudden shift in attention, Shield filled up his lungs and belted out a new challenge.

"What's the matter?" he bellowed, rustling the hair of the brigands. "You afraid of the big bad tank?"

Narrowing their eyes, they turned their knives away from Aoda onto him. Once again, their damage barely registered, and even as they did, the rogues took far more damage than he had, nearly dropping them to zero.

Aoda watched as "the big bad tank" drew the attention from the bandits to himself, causing all of the damage that would have inflicted the noirette to be redirected towards him. All four of their opponents were near death, but unfortunately the neither of the players had it in them to take each of them out in one move. It would take a little more time, although it not nearly as much as he'd expected when they began the quest. With Sword Arts involved, their health was reduced drastically. If only he had the energy for one more.

Instead, he lunged at the closest bandit and slashed into him with his curved sword, lowering it's health a little bit more. One more attack and there would be one less enemy to worry about.

Due to Shield's <<Howl>> skill, the bandits didn't even stop to look at Aoda. They just kept on marching forward, determined to attack the tank, who was barely able to be scratched by the mobs.

Only thin slivers remained of each bandit's health. However, Shield knew better than to count the combat as over. He remembered a particular case five floors below that had resulted in a stalemate for nearly a solid minute of combat. As he wound up and swung, it seemed as if he might be doomed to repeat that same ending. His axe sailed through the air and met with nothing, the metal singing slightly as it cut through the empty space where a bandit had once stood.

The surrounding foes saw his failed attack and pounced, flailing with their weapons, but between the experienced player's armor and shield, the small blades were turned aside, failing to penetrate his defenses.

"Stay sharp," Shield reminded Aoda as he tightened the grip on his shield. "They're close, but there's no telling what it will take to properly end this. It's never over until you see little glowing shards."
