With its arm missing, that meant swinging in the trees was no longer an option. Shield thought he could even see this realization in its eyes as it looked up into the limbs overhead.

Need to finish this now before it gets back into the air.

He lunged, slashing with his sword. The monkey retaliated,, but only half heartedly. It needed an out, and this time the monkey was too quick for him. It turned and ran with its arms off of the ground entirely, nursing the stump of an arm where Shield had cut it short.

Swearing under his breath, Shield took off after it, try his best to get around him and cut off his escape. They were near to the clearing now, and Shield did not know if he would be able to manage to stop the advance before they were free of the trees.

Shield doubted if it would actually understand his words, but so far, taunting had proven to be a universal language so that even without understanding, he had successfully once already goaded the reluctant primate to attack.

"What a coward," he called out. "And you're supposed to be one of the strongest, aren't you? What a weak species that a guard is fleeing from one little old human."

With a wild, uncontrolled howl, the monkey rounded on him, taking a swing at his face. Shield was ready though, and drove the point of his sword deep into the palm of the attacking hand. The health of the monster depleted down to zero, and like all of the foes who had come before it, it too burst into shards and was gone. With the second fight at an end, Shield retraced his steps back to the clearing and continues along towards what was now unmistakably a tower.

Shield began to realize that he had only been concerned about enemies so far. There had been no loot to speak of from any of them, likely due to their low stats relative to his level, but still, there should at least be the potential for treasure. He opened his menus, swapping out an item here and there to boost his search range. The earring that materialized on his lobe was lifeless at the moment, the forest around him offering very little as far as opportunity to hide loot.

He began to retrace his steps back to the clearing, keeping his eyes out for any signs of a glow from the golden wire that laced into the smooth silver band of his earring. When near treasure, it lit up like a light bulb's burning filament. With the sun now completely down and night settled into the forest, it would not be hard to spot.

As soon as he found the clearing, he noticed a dim glow cast upon his shoulder. Crossing to the other side, the light increased in intensity. Although it had not dropped during the fight, the clearing that the strongest of the monkeys had been guarding seemed to have something to offer. He continued to press on until the light was shining out like midday, his body bathed practically in sunlight as far as he could see.

He glanced around, seeking the source of the light. There was very little around. The forest was dense, but sparse if you were looking for anything besides trees. Finally, the light from his earring illuminated something that was caught up in a tangle of roots at the base of a nearby tree. He stepped closer to inspect, and sure enough, there half buried in the ground, was an old, worn chest made from aged wood.

Shield let out a silent whoop of triumph, punching the air with his fist before searching through his inventory for the item he needed to increase his chances of finding superior loot. In his hand, there appeared a small, golden skeleton key. He extended it towards the lock of the chest, and it vanished in a glitter of gold and a tinkling of metal. The lid of the chest popped open, but only as far as the roots would allow. Still, it was enough to be allowed access.

The display appeared which reported the chests's contents. Shield frowned, dismissing the dialog box.

"I have had a run of bad luck," he groused, turning his back as the chest's durability expired and burst into light shards. "I haven't found any decent armor in weeks. Good thing I have a decent stock built up, or this consumable really wouldn't be worth it."

He turned towards the tower and began walking once again. As he did so, he kept his nose in his inventories, trading out loot finding gear for combat gear, finally summoning out a one-handed axe that he had not seen in some time. "Bleed might be the best bet I have for soloing whatever fight is coming," he posited aloud. "The reliability of my thorns has been limited to save the least. That, and there seems to be a certain amount of bypassed defense. It's as if their attacks have merely ignored a certain amount of my armor. I guess I can afford to shift defense into damage."

He continued along, also summoning out field rations and an extra side of food he had saved in case of emergencies. "This should help make up for whatever I lose in defense." He downed both items and turned his eyes back to the looming tower ahead. "Looks like I'm almost there."

The tower was not exactly a behemoth. It was small, but it cocked out at odd angles, hardly rising straight out of the ground, rather bending and jutting off into different directions to achieve its own sort of balance. He entered, but the landing was just that - a landing. No doors or passages. It was just a single spiral staircase up to a wooden hatch. He took the stairs carefully, but as odd as its construction seemed, it did not sway or move. It was solid. Shield made his way more quickly to the top and lifted the hatch. A sickly green light spilled out past him, and there at a cauldron, he saw a familiar bent form.

It's the same witch as before.

He carefully crept out of the passage and made to close the hatch, but as soon as he had done so, the green light cast by the bubbling cauldron turned a bright, dangerous red and the witch whirled around.

"Welcome, my pretty!" she shrieked, clapping her long, spindly hands. Two guards appeared beside her, and before he knew it, all three of them were closing on on Shield. He brandished his axe, slashing at the witch. His blade cut through the clawed hand that she had reached out with, and she flinched. Her guards, however, swung with their halberds, each taking pieces out of Shield's health bar, but not nearly as much as they lost as a result.

The hand that had been cut continued to leech out red pixels. It as closing up, but slowly. Shield took another swing. This time, it was the witch who gained the upper hand, cackling as her long nails dragged along Shield's chest, but she quickly gasped and stumbled back, her hand now covered is scratches and glowing scorch marks.

"How dare you!?" cried the witch's shrill voice. Her guards continued pressuring Shield, trying to back him up to create distance from their charge, but their attacks did not harm him enough to retreat, and the one who managed to hit once again took far more damage than Shield.

"Looks like you miscalculated who had the upper hand in this fight," he growled, now taking it in turn to advance as the guards in their tall, furry black hats began to back away, their weapons out to try to create distance.

Shield pushed their spears aside, walking between them and cutting once again through the frail, cloaked figure of the witch. She let out a wail of anger and pain, flailing out with both of her long-nailed hands to try to repel her attacker. At the same time, the guards tried to use their weapons to separate Shield from their mistress, grunting and chanting some deep-voiced song of battle, but they only succeeded in racking up more damage from Shield's thorns.

The fight had only just begun and it was already far more successful than either of the skirmishes with the flying nuisances that Shield had thus far ground his way through. "Give up and hand over the item, and we can be done with this!" Shield challenged her, knowing that intimidation tactics would likely not prevail. Still, if it meant wrapping up this irritating mission quicker, it was worth at least trying.

"Never!" screeched the witch. Shield slashed again, cutting her across the shoulder and opening another glowing red wound, even more red pixels wafting out as the other wound began to close.

"I kinda figured, but it was at least worth a try," he sighed. The witch slashed for his face, but she missed outright, her nails swiping through empty air in front of his face. Her guards attempted to cover for her, jabbing at Shield with the pointed tips of their pole arms, but despite chipping away a little further at Shield's perpetually regenerating health, they managed to do very little aside from further harm themselves.

Shield turned to look at them properly, and he could already see that one of them had fallen below half health. "Hey, witchy. It looks like your boys night not last too much longer." He glanced back at hear health, seeing how she was only just above half health as well.

"Looks like you're not going to last much longer than them," Shield teased. He took a swipe, but the witch's rage was beginning to get the better of her. She slapped his weapon away and stabbed forward with her claws, sinking them into Shield's stomach. She smiled a crooked toothed smile for a moment before wincing, looking down at her hand to see more scrapes and burns. She screamed, stumbling back as she pulled at her hair. Her health bar dropped into the yellow.

The winkies that served as her guards closed in into the gap as she stumbled away, blocking off Shield from their mistress. The cut at him, and Shield merely watched as their health continued to drop, the healthier of the two reduced to his yellow gauge while the lesser dropped down further and into the red. "Tick tock, guards. You're only speeding up your own clock."

Despite their best efforts to protect the witch, Shield nudged his way through the guards with his shield and struck another blow to her. While each attack did next to nothing on its own, his axe was doing its job perfectly, opening fresh wounds one after the other as the witch continued to bleed out. It was a slow process, but suddenly, her gauge changed color, as did the color of her eyes.

The coal black orbs burned a bright red, and she reached inside of her robes to produce a twisted, glinting dagger of black obsidian. She let out a devilish cry and slashed at Shield. Immediately, he saw a new symbol on his status bar. As the winkies continued to fruitlessly slash at him, he looked closer at the sumbol.

"A green droplet," he wondered aloud. "Poison?"

Sure enough, his health regeneration slowed as something began sapping health out of him at a higher rate than their weapons had dealt on their own.

He felt one of the halberds pierce him, and with a rumbling shout, the first of the guards burst into shards of light. Using the opening to his advantage, Shield swung for the witch who did not even bother avoiding the attack. He opened a fresh, bleeding wound, but she did not flinch. Her eyes merely burned into him, her hatred palpable as she snarled at him and slashed with her dagger.

Shield was not interested in being poisoned to death any time soon, so he jumped back, avoiding the attack. The second guard closed in, swiping at his head, but he lifted his sword arm, allowing the attack to cleave through his arm. The wound immediately closed, while meanwhile the owner of the halberd that had struck the blow now dipped into the red himself.

"Tick tock, tick tock," Shield continued to mock. He held up his Shield, advancing slowly on the witch once again.

To drive home his point, Shield lunged forward, slashing at the witch with one clean chop of his axe. Again, bright red pixels spilled out into the air. With a deafening scream, the witch cried out, "Enough!" She brought down her dagger, stabbing it into Shield's neck. Immediately, his body seized up. The witch smiled her toothy grin and stepped back. "It's time you learned some manners! You forget whose workshop this is!"

Another strike from the guard's pole arm pierced his body, and he could see out of the corner of his eye how low the winkie's health had fallen. He only had one more hit in him and he would be finished. Likewise, the witch was clearly on her last legs. Her long, wiry hair a veritable rat's nest as she heaved and panted out of exhaustion. With his body stuck in place, Shield had no means by which to retaliate. Seeing her opportunity, the witch ambled over to a shelf and ran her long finger along a series of bottles, pausing on one which she pulled out and examined. With a sharp, piercing cackle, she wheeled around and smashed the bottle at Shield's feet. Flames leaped up, swirling around his body and further stalling his battle healing's ability to keep him healed up.

"You are nothing, you wriggly little worm!" taunted the witch from behind a wall of flames. "You may have gotten in some lucky hits, but it stops now! My magic and my potions are more than enough for you."

Behind him, Shield felt one more lancing blow, and a cry of pain, followed by the familiar sound of death as the winkie behind him was reduced to zero hit points. Finally, the flickering paralysis symbol faded altogether and Shield walked out of the swirling flames. "Well, I should hope so. Clearly your guards aren't."

Shield took a swing at the witch. She fell back, crawling away from him as he advanced. His burn and poison effects ran out, and his health finally began to rise without obstacle. The witch swiped with her dagger, but her heart was not in it.

"Your guards are dead," he growled. The witch began hurling things at him, but they all merely crashed to the ground in front of him. One by one, he stepped over them to close the gap. "You're nearly dead yourself." He backed her into a corner. She scrambled to her feet, clutching at the wall behind her as she shook her head. The fire in her eyes was fading now, and they were slowly returning to the dull black from before.

"You lost this fight a long time ago," Shield said darkly, brandishing his axe off to his side. "It just took you until now to realize it. You relied too much on your guards to save you, but they could not even save themselves."

Rummaging in her robes, the witch pulled out and uncorked another bottle like the one she had thrown before. She held it out with a shaking hand. "D... Don't come any closer!" she said as boldly as she could, which is to say, not at all. "This... this will-"

"It will do nothing more than the last one did," Shield interrupted. He called her bluff, slicing through the bottle and her as well. Fire erupted all around them. The witch was unharmed by it, but she was harmed by the bleeding which his attack had triggered. She looked for a way out, but she found nothing. She cried out wailing for help that would never come. "This is over. Give up. Hand over the item."

She shook her head. "No! It's my prized brew! It's not meant for anyone else!"

"I'm not interested in what it was made for," Shield barked. "It's mine now. Hand it over."

The flames died away, as did the last of the witch's health. Shield took one last swing at her, and her form vanished. Her empty robes drifted to the floor and the customary congratulatory banner sprang to life in the middle of the brewing station. He dismissed, it, inspecting the drops from the fight and smiling to himself. "About time I managed to get a hold of one of these," he sighed. "It's been far too long since I could use anything to help me in my work."

He made for the hatch, letting it close behind him with a snap. The tower was silent behind him as he left. There were no calls of flying monkeys either above him or behind him. For now, at least, it was peaceful. The night was cool and refreshing, and Shield had a slight spring in his step. He had missed the feeling of having aspirations in his line of work. He hadn't felt it in months. Now, here it was, like it had never left.

"I can't wait to give my loot a proper inspection."

As he walked, he remembered the hidden chest from before. It hadn't been a big haul, but there could still be more out there. He changed out his gear, dismissing the axe once again and pulling out his familiar wristband, earring, and pendant. The first of the items was actually no longer necessary. It had accompanied him since his first days in Aincrad, but with so few skill slots left, he was running out of places to invest points. His search skill was practically maxed.

"I suppose after that, I'll need to either save up for my next slot or else just keep investing in skill mods for the things I already have unlocked," he thought to himself, though that being said, he had unlocked a few skills that did not take up slots. Perhaps he could invest in them instead. Either way, he was forced to make some rather drastic choices at this point in his build.

With his earring in place, he swept back and forth, following the rough trail he had used on the way there, but covering as much space as possible. Eventually, his earring picked something up, lighting up in the dark like a beacon. He tracked the something by the brightness of his trinket, watching it grow brighter and brighter until finally he came to a moss covered log. He knelt down, inspecting the log. He knocked on it. It wasn't hollow. Still, there must be something there of value.

He leaned closer, inspecting the moss itself. "I suppose things like this are commonly used in alchemy," he mused. "Some of it may have even gone into the witch's potions that she used on me." He tapped a thick patch of the stuff, and sure enough, an item menu appeared. He selected the option to store the moss and straightened back up as a the log was left bare, now simply a lump of slowly decomposing wood.
