[SP-F21] A Monotonous Thing <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

Pinball didn't have anything to do anymore. He had no friends, no guild, no endgame goals or aspirations in mind, and with the exception of those he accidently stumbled upon, no quests he cared to accomplish. Was it bad that he no longer remembered when it was he sat down to rest? It felt like he never slept. He spent nearly all of his waking hours just walking, but sometimes he'd find himself on the floor, face down more often than not. Pinball wondered when the health problems would start. Even though in the back of his mind, he knew he was being fed via injection, Cardinal still subjected players to uncomfortable pangs of hunger. Was it bad that sharp stabs in his stomach felt normal to him now? No sleep, and no stopping unless he sat down to eat. That's where he found himself now, on a boulder outcropping an unusually rounded cave. He recognized this place, didn't he? He chugged a Damage potion, just to be safe.

Entering, he found himself in a smooth stone cavern he had been in before. Pinball knew this place, and he unfortunately knew it well. This was where he found the monsters that always seemed to scale themselves up to meet his level. They dropped absurdly good loot, especially when he consumed an item that had the Prosperity enhancement (which he may or may not have just done, just for the taste of a rich chocolate coin). And by God, this time there were a lot of them. It seemed like the dark little rocky field of flat stone and mushrooms were overflowing for them. Some hopped about like the ugly, stupid looking beasts they were, shooting out their tongues to [censored] up the stray firefly. Some slept on boulders or in patches of the mushrooms, and some still just sat there making noise. For what, he didn't know, but it was annoying. Pinball threw himself into a fight, smacking as many as he could see.

For the first time in a long time, Pinball found himself swinging a spear-like weapon with a killing intent. It wasn't with the cold hearted malice of a murderer, but rather the feverish panic that fell over a player when they were swarmed with mobs - except Pinball was strong, and he wasn't so easily overcome. Combat seemed hazy and blended; it felt like he spent minutes beating back and getting beaten, but truthfully only a matter of seconds had passed. Was it the severe sleep deprivation coupled by hunger that kept him from really focusing on anything, or was this just simply the bloodlust of an outnumbered fighter? Pinball had always fought like a cornered animal, so even an outside observer would have a hard time telling just what compelled him to try and slaughter the mass of frogs populating the empty, glowing cavern. Maybe he just hated their faces.

His spear struck with a vicious impact, usually ending up sending more than one Glow Frog their fair share of feet backwards. But he wouldn't let up. These monsters were programmed to attack relentlessly - they were quite literallly robots. They didn't run away from him when they took too much damage. They kept coming and coming, and they wouldn't stop attacking until their target was dead or ran too far away. And Pinball was the same. There was no thought or rhyme or method to the way he fought. Pinball jumped and tackled and kicked and threw himself this way and that, accenting Sword Arts with his own personal wavy style, Pinball fought with pure, unadulterated, animalistic instinct, and that was truer now more than ever. While he knew in the process of mindlessly grinding he was becoming exactly what he hated, there was a certain tranquility to it. Combat liberated him.

The shattering of Glow Frogs almost shocked him out of his violent trance - but it didn't. Not really. It was just more of a wake up call, a realization that he was actually here. That it wasn't a dream. There was one left in front of him. He brought his spear back like a pool cue, a bright green glow cutting through Zomekko's shadowy flame, neon green and pitch black mingling together in an intimate thrust. Sword Art activations came to him instantly now. He no longer had to think much about the input movements anymore. They came to him naturally - as natural as the sight of his HUD when he woke up in the morning. How long had he been here? As the Glow Frog burst into a pixelated cloud of blue shards, Pinball found that he almost didn't remember even taking the shot. This was his reality, and sometimes it felt like he wasn't really living in it.

Then they were gone. Pinball stood up straight, only to see a new group hopping threateningly towards him. The tired murderer acknowledged them with a weak, unenthusiastic tilt of his head, icy blue eyes tearing into them like the spear he normally wielded. He dug his foot into the ground and launched himself into the group's midst, swinging his staff as wildly as a kid played with that cool stick they always seemed to find in their backyard or the side of the road. Pinball wasn't into it this time, though. Fighting was waking him up, and was slowly becoming more and more aware of what was going on. Aimless wandering numbed him down, but complex tasks - like fighting - were a surefire way to get him back on his toes... at least until he fell asleep and/or got too tired to continue. But that was neither here nor there - right now, these frogs needed to die.

Why was he here? He had almost already forgotten. He didn't know why he was killing these frogs. Was it to grind money and experience? Did he want some sort of way to vent? Why did he need to vent? Taking your anger out on others was hardly the right way to express your emotions... and if the fighting didn't make most thoughts short-lived and fleeting, that last thought would have lingered in Pinball's mind for a long time. But alas, these Glow Frogs must pay. He hit these things so many times he hardly felt the impact anymore - but was that because he was strong, or was that because he just wasn't hitting them? He didn't really know, and he didn't really stop to find out. He planned on only stopping when he needed to, and a glance at his healthbar was the first time he realized he had even been hit.

And everything was a blur. Blurred and blurry - like a blur. Pinball darted here and dashed there, his spear swinging out and reacting to the Glow Frog's hops and lashes of the tongue with his own colorful - albeit muffled by shadow - strikes of his Weeping Moon Sword Art. These weren't very tought - weren't very tough at all! But somehow, apparently, they were putting up more of a fight than most things he fought. Maybe it was just the fact that it was one versus four that was tipping the scales in their favor - or maybe sleep was messing with his mind or maybe he was just out of practice. But if he knew one thing for certain, and certain he was, was that these Glow Frogs weren't going to be alive in about thirty seconds. Twenty nine. Twenty eight. Twenty seven. Twenty six. Twenty five.

His health bar wasn't something he paid too much attention to. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing was debatable - was it because his health pool was so large he didn't have to worry about getting hit by mobs like these, even if he was being swarmed in a group like that? Or did he just not care? One explanation was far more worrisome than the other. As his staff lashed out another time, Pinball was bathed in an explosion of light, color, and shadow, leaving a single Glow Frog left standing - or sitting, rather. It didn't matter. It wouldn't be here for much longer. Pinball spared a moment to look the creature up and down, disgusted. Such an ugly thing, wasn't it? Bulging eyes and slimy skin, disgustingly developed legs, and a little lantern on its forehead like it was one of those fish he didn't know the name of. Gross.

But after just two bouts with groups of four Glow Frogs each, Pinball was left tired and beaten, his energy practically depleted. But still, hordes of the monsters swarmed the hollow cavern, as overpopulated as a popular food chain. Pinball was going to come back to them in a moment - first, he needed to rest. He hopped up onto a nearby boulder with a single, powerful bound. Effortlessly and dexterously he landed, as light as a feather. Zomekko seperated from his weapon and reformed into a ghostly cat, but Pinball didn't notice or he didn't care. He had stopped paying too much attention to his familiar for a long time now. She - no, it - was just a means to an end, and getting rid of her also got rid of the damage he put out so easily. She was a necessity, and nothing more. Pinball sat down and took a short breather. Already his energy was jumping up.

As he rested, it became quickly apparent to the insomniac that his health was in a much worse spot than his energy could ever really be. When did that happen? How did it happen? To be completely truthful, Pinball didn't even remember being hit by one of the Glow Frogs in the first place. Was his tiredness effecting his attention? Or, again, did he just not care to pay attention to that sort of thing? Maybe he didn't. After all, he had come this far, right? He wasn't going to be dying anytime soon. Unfortunately. Pinball frowned and shook his head. His HP Regen wasn't as powerful as his EN Recovery, that was for sure, so he would have to wait a bit longer for that to catch up a bit before he could throw himself back into the fray. He watched the Glow Frogs mill about some more, the miniature abominations hopping to and fro without a care.

They'd all be gone soon, the frogs. In a way, weren't they the most disgusting monsters in the game? No, not the game - this was his reality. Which meant that the Glow Frogs were the most disgusting creations in existence, and that they needed to be purged immediately. Pinball almost wished there were guns in the game. He used to play all sorts of first person shooters, and god, would it be satisfying to just mow down the horde of them, racking up loot and watching them disintegrate into nothing but clouds of blue pixels, carried away by the drafty cave breeze. That was sort of funny to think about, wasn't it? He would have laughed, but it actually wasn't that funny. And he was tired. Oh, so tired. A couple of winks would be priceless, but this wasn't the time to sleep. He'd be eaten alive by frogs and he wouldn't realize it was happening until his brain was fried.

Without another thought about mowing down hordes of amphibians with an automatic, Pinball leaped off of the boulder from which he had perched and threw himself back into the fight. If he couldn't shoot him, he'd just have to hit them all - really, really hard. Like, really hard. Four rapid spear strikes collided with four individual frogs, battering them ruthlessly and relentlessly, and leaving most of them a bit more worse off than they were when they had full health - understandably. Pinball was practically a force of nature, and he wouldn't let up his hitherto endless assault. He wouldn't stop until he was practically dead on his feet or this cave was completely devoid of Glow Frogs - if the little mutants thought they could invade his comfy space, then they were sorely mistaken. Pinball was going to be having absolutely none of it, and his Weeping Moon was what he had to show for it. Maybe they would get the message and just die already.

This next attack was sure to bring the mini group of Glow Frogs to their knees. His staff glowed with a violent intensity that would have lit up the cave like a beacon if it were not for the swath of shadow that swirled around and consumed his weapon in its icy entirety. The Glow Frogs watched, amazed, their tongues lolling out and off the sides of their mouths as heavenly judgement rained down on them in the form of a skinny kid with a really long, glowing stick. Every single one of the little Glow Frogs were beaten down to the red, with the exception of one he had missed and continued to stare dumbly at Pinball, more or less oblivious of the boy's struggles. That was annoying, he knew, but it would be as dead as the rest of them in just a moment. Pinball spun his spear to his side.

Here came the finisher! In another flash of light, and shadow, Glow Frogs burst into clouds of nothingness, carried away like so many leaves in the wind, leaving only a rewards screen behind. Pinball didn't pay much attention to that, though. He was racking up numbers like nobody's business, but his primary goal was to finish off and purge the Glow Frogs from the face of Aincrad. Well on his way to that goal, dead in another moment they were - with the second exception of the same oblivious Glow Frog. Annoyed, Pinball ran up and punted it like a football, and then ran after it as it soared through the air. He hopped from boulder to boulder, hitting the ground and rolling only to pop back up like a jack in the box and leap into the air like he was flying. It was on one such jump, fall, roll, and pop up that Pinball...

....brought his spear back and then thrust it forward. In an explosion of colored blue light and globules of evanescent shadow, Pinball's wooden staff smacked the belly of the Glow Frog. The monster seemed to double in size as the energy was transferred to the mob in the form of damage, and then it exploded like the rest, leaving Pinball free falling through a fresh, pixellated cloud. Pinball hit the ground in the roll, landing in front of another, delightfully oblivious group of Glow Frogs. Wasting no time, Pinball rested his spear on his shoulder and ran forward in bounds, aiming to close the distance in just a minute. They were next, and after that? Well, who knew? Maybe he really would kill every single one of them here. Wouldn't that be hilarious? Where did all the Glow Frogs go, they would ask. At that, Pinball did smile. A bit of a smug smile, actually. Was Pinball even all there? That wasn't funny at all. What the hell is this rant?

With that group purged, another squabble of amphibians took its place, their colorful head lanterns lighting up and almost blinding the spear wielding swordsman. He frowned again, because he's a very frowny kind of guy, and then let himself fight some more. In an instant Weeping Moon was activated, and in an instant the Glow Frogs were beaten back without mercy, their health immediately and almost instantly dropped down to nearly half. In the first hit, these mobs were usually dropped to that very thin line between green and yellow - breathing on them would probably put them in the danger zone, at that point. But Pinball used a weapon to do a lot more than breathe on them, and that killing intent was made a bit more obvious as he mentally and physically prepared himself for his next hurried exchange with the monsters - others were already closing in, and he had to finish this fight up and finish it up fast.

In the middle of the fight, it felt like time slowed. It always did. As if his whole world was condensed and focused on that one, singular moment - on the brink of life and death, nothing mattered other than that bloody and vicious struggle. You were going to live or die, and if you wanted to live, the other would have to die. There was no arguing or bargaining with the rules of life, and there were never any complaints from either side of the party once everything was said and done... for, uh, obvious reasons. Pinball was fighting frogs - arguably his worst enemy, next to the corrupt and twisted perceptions of the masses. Which of the two was the greater evil was honestly debatable, except they weren't. It was like Pinball's life in Aincrad was a story, and someone was just rushing to fill out the paragraphs right now. That's what it felt like. It didn't usually. Normally.

When Pinball snapped out of his bloodied trance, there were only two Glow Frogs left standing - or, rather, hopping. Wasn't that simply superb! Only two more of these wretched monsters to deal with, and he could finally just sort of chill out and heal up some more. The more and more he fought, the slower it felt like time passed, and the more and more his will to continue destroying the cavern full of glowing frogs deteriorated. Why had he even started fighting them, again? He couldn't even remember that much, and if he couldn't remember why he was doing something, why was he even doing it? That would have been a good application for Pinball to take to his social life, if he had ended up dwelling on the thought. Which, again, he didn't. His attention span was practically nothing these days, and rightfully so - he needed lots more sleep and attention if he was ever going to be able to function properly again.

But for what seemed like one last time, there were only two remaining. Pinball fought like a caged animal, lashing out violently and throwing himself around this way and that to surprise and outspeed. But for the slow and clumsy Glow Frogs, it didn't matter; they weren't quick enough to react, and what hits they landed on Pinball came from either his own neglect or just pure luck. Either way, they weren't going to be killing him anytime soon, unless Pinball decided - intentionally or otherwise - that he was going to be super reckless for no reason. When had recklessness ever served him well in the first place? The answer is simple: never. As the last of the Glow Frogs were vanquished, Pinball took a step back and a deep, greedy breath of air, glancing at his health and energy for the second time on his spree. Should he continue? Should he stay, or should he go? The Clash.
