Strange how the simplest of quests could give some of the most experience. Not a day before, Bahr had completed his fight against the Venom Snapper and three of its lackeys, the quest itself offering a minuscule amount of experience. Today, he finds a quest that offers trips the amount. The thing is, the quest he would be undertaking today was much easier than the Venom Snapper. He just had to defeat an oversized wasp that was easy in comparison to even the wolves of the last quest. Strange how things like this played out.

Following his map to the spot that the quest had indicated, he found the Field Boss not far from town. It hadn't noticed him yet, so he opened up his menu and navigated to his equipment panel, double checking everything to make sure that it was adequate. Not that he really needed to, the thing was a wimp based on its stats. He dismissed the window and sauntered confidently up to the monster, removing his weapon from its sheath on his back and getting ready for the fight.

"I actually don't have a lot of time, so let's try to make this quick."

By the time he had finished his super duper cool one-liner, the giant wasp was upon him. He flew forward at extraordinary speed, hit stinger aimed directly at Bahr's center mass. That was cool and all, but Bahr barely paid it any mind. He sidestepped the clumsy attack easily, yawning as he did so. By the time the bugged had turned around to face him again, it was already too late. Bahr had closed in and used one of his Sword Arts, Fight Blade. It connected and stunned the oversized bug, leaving it open to a followup attack.

This wasn't even fun for Bahr. With his heightened level and superior equipment, he knew that nothing in the surrounding area stood a chance. He didn't even expect this thing to survive another basic attack or two. He regarded the creature with a mixture of apathy and pity, happy that he himself were not in the same position it was. Then again, he knew better than to charge beasts so much stronger than him. Most of the time, anyways.

Without skipping a beat, Bahr charged up his sword once more. He didn't have time to play with his food - he had places to go and worthwhile mobs to destroy. The more loot he could gather, the faster he could climb through the ranks and join the Assault Team on the frontlines. More and more every day, he found himself emboldened to press forward and get there as quickly as he could so he could investigate. If he didn't, how would he ever find her?

The Straight connected with the giant bug while it was still stunned, causing it to burst into a million blue pixels. Without wasting any time, Bahr sheathed his weapon, turned around and began his trek back to town. He intended to venture to the fourth floor today and fight some of the tougher mobs there. He even planned on wearing some non-combat gear just so he could get the best drops possible.

FLOOR 4

"Teleport, Snowfrost!" he said as he approached the teleport gate, his body dematerializing almost instantly and rematerializing in a much snowier locale. He stepped away from the teleport gate, opening up his menu as he meandered through town toward the exit. He navigated to the equipment panel and swapped out his Light Armor trousers for some vanity ones that looked similar, and then equipped a special piece of equipment that he had snatched from his shop - the Gloves of Caerus. While they didn't offer anything in the way of protection, he did endow the wearer with incredible luck, which he was hoping would make the drops he got better than usual.

Before long, he had made it out of the safe zone. He looked around, trying to decide where to go. It was fortunate that he had sewn this particular jacket with a little extra insulation, otherwise he would have been freezing already and his movements would be sluggish.

There was one thing Bahr was certain of, and that was the fact that this floor was infinitely more entertaining than the ones before it. Not because there was anything particularly exciting going on. In fact, it was pretty quiet and barren, not a single other player or mob in sight. It was just the change in scenery. No more would Bahr be forced to endure the same old boring features. Trees. Plains. Forest. Hills. Rocks. Moss on rocks. Sunny weather. Green, green, and more green. Every shade of green you could possibly imagine. All of these seemed pleasant until you had seen them, every day, over and over again for actual years. He didn't mean to seem unappreciative, but he was unappreciative. Even if snow everywhere you looked would get monotonous after awhile, at least it wasn't green. The only problem with new terrain like this is that Bahr had no idea where any of the good hunting or material gathering spots were.

As he continued to roam around a bit, he relished how quiet the area was. The silence was so intense that it was almost deafening, the only thing he could hear over it being the crunching of his boots through the thick snow. He still hadn't found anything worthwhile to collect yet, but maybe that was a good thing. It gave him a chance to enjoy the serenity of the atmosphere before losing himself in the pandemonium of battle.

The occasional gust of wind would ripple through the area, its cold embrace chilling his cheeks and whipping the snow about. Even that was somehow calming, like a reminder that he was nothing more than a piece of the environment that surrounded him. He was the added element, the piece that allowed him to experience it. For the first time in awhile, he felt fortunate to be trapped in this game.

Of course, all good things must come to an end. Bahr could hear a low rumble approaching somewhere from the east. Out of nowhere, a gigantic snowball emerged from the nearby treeline, headed straight for Bahr. He managed to dodge it at the last second, and looked back up the hill to see what had caused it. But there wasn't a hill on that side. As he looked back toward the snowball, he noticed that it was moving as though it had sentience all its own. The health bar wrapped around it confirmed this theory.

Finally, it was time to get some action. Bahr lunged forward and struck the snowball six times, the attacks carving through it in a way that almost seemed harmless to the snowball at first. It was only the depletion of its health bar that confirmed it was taking any damage at all. The final attack felt a bit more tangible, confirming that the creature had been stunned.

Bahr didn't want to waste any time. This is exactly what he had come here for. As soon as the final attack from Fight Blade connected and the creature was stunned, Bahr charged up his sword once more and put it against his back, jumping back-first against the snowball and ripping the blade forward and over his head as soon as it connected. The monster was surprisingly silent through all of this, probably because it was composed of snow and didn't possess vocal chords. But wait, if that were true, how was it that Avalanche had shrieked after getting hit?

Bah, there was no use worrying about silly little things like that now. Bahr jumped away from his adversary, keeping his back turned to it silently. If it were as clumsy and stupid as he thought, it would charge straight for his back the second that the stun wore off.

These ordinary mobs were so dreadfully predictable. As soon as he heard the snow scrunching up behind him, Bahr charged his blade and spun around using Back Rush once more. Unfortunately, the mob had had different plans than he expected and was actually circling around its target. Bahr silently remarked on how unusual this sort of behavior was. Typically mobs would just head straight for the target, but that wasn't the case here.

He had wasted a bit of energy, but it was no problem. Bleed damage was doing its thing, however a snowball could bleed. It had dipped into the yellow the turn before, and the Bleed damage was slowly chipping its HP away even further, even if Bahr wasn't hitting it. He readied his blade and decided to stay patient this time, studying his opponent's movements rather than jumping in straight away. It was possible that this mob had even more tricks up its sleeves.

It was a good thing that he had waited for his opponent to make a move, because it did indeed have different attack patterns than he had expected. Inexplicably, the snowball had apparently decided that now it wanted to attack him from the back. As it circled around again, Bahr charged up his blade and waited patiently for the right time to strike. Once it felt close enough, he spun around and thwacked it away with his blade, the resulting impact causing a shockwave to ripple through the area.

This time, it shrieked. Bahr wasn't sure how, but he was sure that it had shrieked. Completely bizarre, considering it hadn't made any noise beyond scrunching up the snow everywhere it had gone so far. The thing didn't even have a mouth. How was it making noises like that? Meh, it didn't really matter. Silent, loud, all mobs went down the same way.

Wanting to get this over with already, Bahr charged up his blade and released the pent up Sword Art energy in the form of a Cyclone, spinning on his heel after rushing toward the snowball. Unfortunately, his heel slipped on a patch of ice, causing him to fall spectacularly. Luckily, this same patch of ice caused the snowball to ironically miss as well, veering wildly off course and into the nearby snowbank.

Curses. Bahr had been so close to just being done with the damn thing. Now he was going to have to get up, dust himself off, charge up his sword and waste even more energy on another Sword Art. With how much energy he had expended, he was going to need to rest before taking off the next monster. How annoying. He stood and readied himself for the bizarre creature to emerge from the snowbank. As it was now, it blended in too well, and Bahr wasn't going to take his chances and miss again.

As soon as the Sentient Snowball emerged from the snowbank, Bahr was ready. He double checked his footing to assure himself that he wouldn't slip before spinning on his heel once more, carving his blade into the creature no less than four times. On the final connection, the monster burst into a cloud of blue pixels and a loot panel populated in front of Bahr. The loot wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. He resolved to search for materials for a small time before challenging another beast of similar caliber, hopefully walking away from that fight with something a little more tangible.

If Bahr had the time to invest his SP into skills that weren't combat-centric, he would. Improving his odds of getting good loot or finding materials more often seemed like an obvious benefit. But he had people he needed to keep up with if he wanted to reach the frontlines.

Having not particularly enjoyed the fight against the Sentient Snowball and finding himself desiring combat against more dynamic adversaries, Bahr decided it was time to take a stroll through the wooded area that was nearby. He entered in under the cover of the pine trees and found that the quiet was even more deafening there. Even the scrunching of the snow under his boots seemed to be dampened in decibel level. Considering the remoteness of the area and the lack of other players, Bahr found the ambiance relaxing while unnerving at the same time.

But wouldn't you know it? The place seemed to be lush with materials, free for the taking. He picked up a stick, and when it didn't explode into blue pixels, stashed it away into his inventory. It wouldn't be long until his out-of-combat timer restored his energy to full, but in the meantime, he was content to simply wander around aimlessly and pick up whatever he came across.

"I need a dollar, dollar, a dollar is what I need..." Bahr quietly sang to himself as he traversed the wooded area, trying to fill the silence up with something, anything. It's crazy how much someone can desire quiet until it becomes an unrelenting force, filling their ears with a noise all its own twice or thrice as uncomfortable as any other sound they had heard recently. Bahr actually found himself missing the hustle and bustle of the Town of Beginnings, as ironic as that was.

He had fought so hard to escape that place, and now he found himself wanting nothing more than to go back. It was this damn silence that was doing it. He felt so utterly conflicted. On the one hand, he had gotten the change he desire. On the other hand, this change had made him so uncomfortable. Was he just being picky? Yes, that was probably it.

He had been so spoiled by his cushy life in the Town of Beginnings that, while it bored him, he had grown accustomed to that sort of easy living. Of course a place like this was grinding his gears, it was designed to make him uncomfortable. Did he just expect to march off into higher, tougher, more dangerous floors and feel completely at home? He mentally kicked himself for having been so foolish. It wasn't like he could turn back now, but every day another piece of him wanted to.

But if he did that, he would never get the answers he was looking for. It was a dreadful paradox. There were peole fighting and dying on the frontlines every day so noobs like him could afford to live that easy lifestyle in the Town of Beginnings and still live to see the outside world. Bahr wanted that outside world. But more than that, he wanted to see his friend again. He needed to see his friend again.

Bahr noticed that his energy had finally fully replenished. Not a moment to see, because as he was looking at his stats panel, he almost hadn't noticed the razor sharp icicle that was flying straight toward him. He managed to narrowly dodge the attack, looking for its source and finding an odd fairy of sorts. It wasn't particularly remarkable in terms of intimidation, but it was a nice change of pace from something as simple as a giant snowball. It was small, about the size of Bahr's head, and white and light blue in coloration.

Within seconds, Bahr was upon it, swinging his charged blade with as much raw tenacity as he could muster. He carved through the creature no less than six times, the final stunning it for the next rotation of attacks. How odd that a creature so small could be so durable. Though Bahr knew it wouldn't stay that way for long.

With the creature stunned, Bahr followed through with his usual way of inflicting damage. He turned away from his target and placed his sword against his back, jumping back into the target and ripping the sword forward once it connected with the monster. Bahr then jumped forward as the creature shrieked, keeping his back turned toward it and waiting for its follow up.

It was sad that battle had become so monotonous, predictable, and routine for Bahr at this point. He had only been actually pursuing combat vrey recently, all things considered, and he already has his own pattern of attacks just as the many mobs that spawned throughout the game. He wondered what the frontliners were like, and whether they had all also developed their own attack patterns that they used time after time after time.

Just as he predicted, the Woodland Ice Sprite went in for the straightforward attack against Bahr's back. Bahr knew that this creature used projectile attacks as opposed to melee, so he was going to need to get creative about how he used this Sword Art when it came to retaliation. Charging up his blade once more, he rapidly spun around and thrust it into the ground, flat side facing the sprite. By the grace of dumb luck, the sprite's attack connected with the flat side of the blade, the icicle shattering harmlessly against it. Without skipping a beat, Bahr dashed int front of his still charged sword, reaching back over his head with both ands and gripping the hilt. He then lurched his arms forward, dislodging the blade from the ground and slamming it down into the sprite. It shrieked loudly as the blade carved through it, but Bahr didn't mind that at all. It was still somehow better than the deafening silence that had surrounded him just moments before.

As the creature's health bar dipped into the yellow, Bahr found himself pleased with the results. Just a couple more good hits like that and he'd have more loot on his hands. The Woodland Ice Sprite started going round, having apparently not learned its lesson from just moments before. Bahr charged his blade once more and, when the timing felt right, turned around and slammed it into the ground behind him to deflect the projectile.

Except this time, it wasn't a projectile.

The sprite had wised up and held onto its icicle this time, maneuvering around the blade after he planted it and stabbed Bahr directly in the shoulder. It must have had magical properties to it, because it hurt like hell for being such a small wound inflicted by such a small creature. He kicked the flat side of his blade closest to the ground, dislodging it while simultaneously grabbing the hilt with both hands and swinging the giant slab of metal in a wide arc above his head to connect with the small creature, sending it reeling back.

This time, Bahr wanted to go on the offensive before the little bastard had time to mount another surprise attack. He charged up his blade once more as the sprite proceeded to flutter about, spinning on his heel and holding out the blade as soon as the creature dared to enter his striking distance. Luckily, all four hits of the attack managed to carve into the opponent, the fourth slicing it clear in half and causing it to disappear, leaving a puff of blue pixels in its wake.

Bahr investigated his loot panel and his eyes lit up. The results were much more favorable this time around. The col was less, but the tangible rewards were much better. Perfect armor? He had spent far too long trying to make it on his own at the shop. And he had succeeded, but there was no telling what sorts of unique enhancements this drop could have. Satisfied with the result, he closed the panel and started making his way out of the forest, excited to get back to Dagger's shop and have him check it out.
