Today Bahr was on the seventh floor. Why, you ask? Well, because he was hunting a dangerous and powerful monster, of course. Haven't you seen enough of these solo threads to figure that out by now? He can't get enough of field bosses!

Today's target was the Amphes Serpens - a dual-headed snake that could swim through land like the Sand Shark and even fly a bit, too. Rumor had it that, in addition to a healthy helping of experience, the field boss dropped a powerful venom that could make the user more powerful. Warriors who challenged the beast had to be cautious, however, as the Amphes Serpens would use the very same venom against them in combat. All in all, it seemed like a fairly exciting quest.

Outfitted for the quest and ready to begin, Bahr entered the seventh floor via teleport gate and started toward the edge of town, knowing that the reptilian monster waited just beyond its boundary.

It wasn't long before Bahr came upon the creature's spawning ground. Looking around and seeing no such field boss, Bahr decided to take a seat in the sand and wait for something to happen. Given that it could swim through sand just like the Sand Shark, he wouldn't be surprised if it decided to use the same method of attack that that thing had.

Sure enough, a few minutes later the hideous twin-headed snake made its appearance, bursting from the sand and diving toward Bahr. In a flash, he was on his feet his sword held out in front of him back handed, stopping the monster's teeth right before the sank into Bahr's body.

"Come now, do you really think this is the first time I've seen a trick like that?" he inquired coldly as he pushed the monster off of him, charging up his sword. When the Sword Art was ready, he dashed forward, the natural colors of his irises replaced by the multicolored splendor of a nebula dotted with countless white speckles. He tore into the beast with a single mighty swing, causing it to shriek out in agony upon impact.

Bahr was so satisfied with the first hit he had managed against the monster that he felt like it needed another. No matter how many times he used it, the Sword Art had absolutely intoxicating power. He felt like he could conquer the entire world with one hand, so long as the other gripped his trusty blade. Prepping to go in for another attack, he charged his blade, leapt toward the enemy, and promptly caught a face full of sand that ruined the accuracy of his attack. He whiffed his sword through the air flippantly, failing to connect with anything, while the serpent made its move.

With its tail, it grabbed Bahr and flung him high into the air. He spun uncontrollably as a result, the bodily turbine only ceasing once the creature caught Bahr in its mouth, its teeth piercing deep into his torso. He gasped and gagged as an involuntary physical response before the snake spat him out back into the sand. He glanced at his status panel as he stood and noticed that he had been inflicted with a poison. Great.

Enraged by the humiliation his opponent had just put him through, Bahr charged up his sword as he dashed forward once again. But this time, he managed to see the tail coming through the whirling sand. H leaned back just enough for the tail to whiff over his body, jumping back before it came back around for a second swipe. He disengaged his Sword Art, knowing that he had missed the appropriate timing to use it.

Despite the fact that things weren't exactly going Bahr's way, he had actually been having fun with the fight so far. It was a legitimate challenge for him, not something he could just breeze through without a second thought. He had putting everything he had into the fight, and he knew it was only about to get better. Finally, the Amphis Serpens used a technique Bahr had been eagerly anticipating. It dove into the sand and became imperceptible, forcing Bahr to brace his sword and assume a defensive stance.

When he had fought the Sand Shark, Bahr had resorted to waiting patiently when it went underground for it to resurface so he could attack it again. He had planned on using this same method against Amphis Serpens, but something felt different this time around. He felt confident that while it was underground was the ideal time to strike. It was just a hunch, but Bahr's gut instinct hadn't let him down in the past. Moreover, the poison that the field body hand inflicted on him earlier was starting to take its toll, chipping away at him with every passing second. He needed to end this now.

Not far off, he saw the sand begin to stir in a line heading straight for him. He charged up his sword and went on the defensive, lurching forward with nebulae for irises and slamming his slan of metal into the sand right where it had been stirring. The resulting hit caused a furious geyser to erupt from the point of impact, leaving a crater in the sand in its wake where the Amphis Serpens could be found. It was a direct hit.

As the snake shot one of its heads forward to attack Bahr, he didn't even flinch, the creature exploding into a cloud of blue pixels mere inches from his face, a gust of wind from its strike blowing the pixels into Bahr's face before the air settled.

Once again, Bahr had gone up against a field boss that plagued whatever floor he decided to visit that day. And once again, the battle had been entertaining - at first, anyway. And once again, the fight had ended in disappointment, with the field boss dying before Bahr felt any real sense of danger. He sighed as he dismissed the loot panel from the mob drop and sheathed his weapon against the small of his back.

How many times was he going to go through this? How many times was he going to make a mockery out of a boss that was supposed to be powerful? Was he simply being too careful when he selected his quests? It was true that he avoided quests that seemed too touch until he felt ready for them, in fact this had been one of those very quests. But when he finally took it, it was just too easy for him. It was probably due to his years of playing MMOs before this. He had grown accustomed to assessing risks and mitigating them. But was he going to get any satisfaction out of this game if he just kept taking quests he knew he could handle?

The answers to these quandaries evaded Bahr, and he found himself wandering aimlessly through the mountainous terrain of the seventh floor. It seemed that the more invested into the game he became, the less enthused by it he was. If this was how he felt, still a lowly level 24, he couldn't imagine how the frontliners felt. They probably had everything dissected down to the raw numbers, running endless calculations before challenging any bosses or progressing at all. Endless grinding against things they knew they could destroy easily.

That was how MMOs were meant to be played. The player was meant to calculate the risks and reduce them to as close to zero as physically possible. But in other MMOs, you weren't afraid to take risks. Sure, there might be a death penalty such as losing some items or even experience, but at least you got to keep playing. In this world, if your HP reached zero, you were done for. There was nothing waiting for you on the other side, in this world or the next.

It was a depressing realization, that the further Bahr got the more he would lose touch with the mysticism and splendor that this game had once provided for him. He thought back to his battle against Swine Jesus, a noble adversary that had brought Bahr to the brink of death after a hard fought battle. If only that pig could see him now. Were they ever to face off again, Bahr would undoubtably massacre the poor animal before it would even know what hit it. He wondered if Swine Jesus would be disappointed in him for losing his muse with the game. Has Swine Jesus even had a single thought pass through its minuscule brain?

Seeing his health dipping a bit low due to the poison damage and not particularly keen on saving them anymore, Bahr retrieved two T1 Potions of Uncommon Quality from his inventory and downed them both, their healing properties reinvigorating him instantly. By the time they had taken effect, the poison had finally worn off. Feeling like getting a bit of hunting in, Bahr also navigated to his equipment panel and swapped out his trousers for vanity pants, and his vanity gloves for the Gloves of Caerus.

(2) T1 Potions of uncommon quality consumed (+80 HP)

Trousers of the Bloodedge (+18 MIT | Recovery 1) removed from equipped and replaced with vanity trousers

As he wandered along, he spotted two wolves in a clearing up ahead. They were shambling about aimlessly, much like Bahr was, and much to his luck they hadn't noticed him yet. Not wanting to squander a perfect opportunity for some hunting, Bahr charged up his blade and sprung into action, dashing forward and aiming to hit both of them in one attack. His footsteps must have alerted one of them, because it manages to dash out of Bahr's range before it was struck. The other wolf, however, wasn't so lucky, taking a direct and yelping in pain.

When Bahr was through with his attack, they both sprang into action, literally, pouncing at Bahr while baring their razor sharp teeth. Bahr was able to outmaneuver them easily enough, backing off once they had finished their attack cycle to put some distance between the two parties. "Was hoping to hit them both..."

With the following attack, Bahr fared a bit better, his attack managing to connect with both targets easily. The second wolf in particular got the worst of it, bursting into a cloud of blue pixels instantly. A loot panel populated in front of Bahr, and as he was dismissing it the second wolf made its move, taking its razor sharp claws against his chest and tearing away some of his HP. Bahr managed to back up and put some space between himself and the wolf, eyes flickering to his health bar. It appeared that it had inflicted modest damage, but nothing that Bahr couldn't handle. He set his blade and prepared for the next round of attacks, peering into the wolf's eyes with murderous intent.

It was a bit odd how all of these internal conflicts Bahr had immediately ceased the moment he found himself in battle. All that mattered was the moment and making the best of it. He didn't care about anything else.

With passion burning through every nerve in his body, Bahr readied his ultimate Sword Art; Galaxy Destroyer. As he leapt forward, the irises of his eyes dropped their usual coloration, which was replaced by the colors of vibrant nebulae dotted with countless white speckles. He brought the sword down on his foe in one clean, powerful motion, the attack ripping into the wolf and causing it to yelp out in distress. It attempted to retaliate, swiping its paw at Bahr weekly, but he simply took one step back and avoided the pitiful attack.

It seemed that the wolf was beginning to run out of steam. Bahr couldn't blame it, as a quick glance at his own stats informed him that he was running dangerously low on energy. He would need to finish this wolf off quickly and be on his way. Running out of stamina at a level like this was just downright embarrassing.

Since he was so low on Energy, Bahr decided that an old school approach was in order. He steadied his blade, bending slightly at the knees and charging up his blade. After a few moments of preparation, he rocketed forward toward the wold, blasting off at maximum speed. Unfortunately, he missed completely, sailing past the animal and into the treeline just past it. When he emerged from the dense foliage, the wolf was instantly upon him, pouncing at him with its claws protracted. Bahr held up his sword and caught the creature with the flat side, pushing it away and dashing back into the clearing so he had free mobility.

That had been embarrassing, but Bahr knew that he was close to putting this wolf out of its misery. Just one more clean hit and he could collect his loot and get out of there. Just a little more accurate of a strike and he was done.

Bahr centered himself before once again entering the pose necessary to activate the Sword Art. Knees bent slightly, leaned forward, sword charged. When he felt comfortable in the stance, he let go, the Sword Art carrying him forward at blistering speeds. This time, the blade buried itself right into the heart of the animal, its HP plummeting to zero instantly. The wolf burst into a cloud of blue pixels and a loot panel populated in front of Bahr.

"Wow, that's a nice chunk of change," he remarked as he noticed the col that had been dropped. By the flash of the loot panel from earlier that Bahr had seen, he estimated that he had made off with no less than 4k col from the pair of wolves, with a Perfect weapon to boot. That was a good haul.

The battle over and the victor declared, Bahr sheathed his weapon against the small of his back and began to meander along once more without any particular goal or destination in mind.

Well, that had been fun. Now what? Bahr peered around the landscape, looking for anything that seemed interesting. Honestly, all of it looked interesting. Having grown up in the plains, behind surrounded by mountains and switchbacks was enough to make his head spin. It made him feel so small! And to a man like Bahr, that was an uncomfortable feeling. He liked to feel big. Big and important. Not small and puny. Big.

Though, there wasn't really any hope for him seeming big in comparison to a mountain, was there? Perhaps he was just being silly. Well, he was definitely being silly, and a bit arrogant, but that was his business. Nobody could read his thoughts except for the very readers surveying this exact post. Aha, caught you! You thought you could get away with reading Bahr's most intimate and arrogant thoughts. Shame on you. Shame indeed. Get out of here.

Bahr was really digging his new house buffs. Just a small bit of time out of combat and his Energy was already fully replenished! He felt like he had the power to run miles, lift a boulder, and swim across the Atlantic. Could he actually do those things? Well, partially. The swimming across the Atlantic thing was definitely out the window, though. For now, at least.

Now that his Energy had been replenished, there was the matter of finding another mob to slaughter. Certainly an easy task, given the floor was crawling with wolves. The only question was whether or not he should find another pair and take them down at the same, or lure one off from a pack and take it alone. The last encounter had almost gassed him out. After mulling it over, he decided that he would be better off fighting them one at a time if he could help it. No need to overexert himself and end up in a sticky situation for no reason.

Well, this was unexpected. Whilst whimsically meandering along, Bahe had been accosted by a bear. He wasn't sure what kind it was, but it sure was big. Like, massive big. Big enough that its paw was the size of his head. It didn't appear hostile at first, but Bahr knew better. Anything that big with a red cursor was definitely hostile. As the bear approach him, it bared its fangs and stood up on its hind legs, roaring at Bahr. He readied his blade and got to work.

It was that time again. Time for his strongest attack. His sword adopted a multi-colored glow as his irises dropped their usual shade and morphed into a nebula dotted with countless tiny white specks. When the attack was ready, he dashed forward, delivering a single devastating slash to the bear. It ripped through its flesh, plummeting its health to near half in a single hit. The bear reared back and groaned in agony as Bahr backed off and waited for it's likely hostile response.

Drunk off of the power of the first attack, Bahr immediately charged up another. His sword began to glow with a multicolored hue and his eyes once again adopted the coloration of a nebula dotted with countless tiny white specks. As he charged up his attack, the bear leapt forth, raking its razor sharp claws against Bahr's left arm. The attack had connected and drained some of his HP, but it didn't stop Bahr from making his attack connect. Once again he slashed forth with intense ferocity, the blade ripping effortlessly through the bear.

It reeled back in agony, roaring again. The roar was weak, and a cursory glance at the creature's health bar revealed that it was now in the red, only pixels away from full depletion. Bahr grinned as he gripped the hilt of his blade tightly, getting ready for the next attack. Judging by how much was left, he probably didn't even need to use a Sword Art for the final attack. He could practically breathe on the thing and kill it.

With a single swipe of his blade, the last of the bear's HP was depleted, exterminating the digital mammal and causing it to burst into a cloud of tiny blue pixels. A loot panel populated in front of Bahr, and he looked upon it with a satisfied expression. Even more col, and a perfect trinket to boot. Bahr felt fortunate to be making off with such a nice haul after a rather unsatisfying boss fight.

Fighting the bear had reminded Bahr of the time he had drowned one in maple syrup. It was only a baby bear, but it had decided to mess up his tent while he was out camping and steal his food. Only Bahr's copious collection of assorted syrup containers remained. He had tracked down the bear cub, detaining it by its scruff as he poured each and every last drop of syrup into a large bowl. He dunked the bear's head inside of the bowl and held it there until it stopped resisting. It was a truly horrible day. For the syrup, not the bear. The bear could go to hell. But it was wrong of Bahr to misuse syrup for such a violent act of retribution. Bahr ate his pancakes dry as penance from that day forward.

Did you actually believe that? That was simply a dream that he had had once. Bahr could never be so cruel.

It was starting to get late. The rays of sunshine peeking through the sides of Aincrad had adopted a scarlet hue, cascading into the seventh floor like a warm blanket. He looked toward the rendered sun and raised his hand in front of his eyes, squinting to adjust to the tangerine glow. Before long it would be dark. He hoped he could make it back home before that happened.

Since he hadn't really been checking where he was going, he opened his menu and navigated to the map. Yikes. He was pretty far out from any of the nearby towns. It would have been quicker to bring a Teleport Crystal, but he hadn't brought one, like an amateur. Without any other option, he started hoofing it back to the nearest town. It would be a miracle if he made it before sundown. That being said, it wasn't like he was rushing.

As he meandered along, something under a tree down the path caught his eye. It glinted briefly in the sun, its metallic sheen casting a beam of light into his retinas. He grimaced as the ray of light hit him and held out a hand, but it was already gone. Curious. He hadn't counted on finding any materials in this area, but Bahr was frequently surprised by what he found on floors like this. He adjusted his course slightly, heading toward the source of the glint to see what he had found.

When he approached, he couldn't believe his eyes. A treasure chest! How long had it been since he found one? Too long, considering he even felt the need to ask. Although, with how smoothly the day had gone, it could have been a mimic sent to ruin his good time. If it was, there was a very good chance he would run out of energy before the fight was over. It if wasn't, he would be heading home with even more loot. It was a gamble he had to see through.
