Yet another newbie quest that Oscar had completely overlooked. An NPC mother approached him in tears, crying about her daughter being missing. Even though it was merely an NPC, there was something about tears that had the tendency to turn Oscar into putty. So of course he accepted the quest. Oscar headed for the cave they mentioned, guided by his quest tracker. On his way, he decided to try and take something out for some extra loot. His pockets were kinda light after upgrading his slime farm. The sudden realization dawned on him and he headed back to town. The quest could wait. He needed money. So up he headed to the seventh floor to try and find himself some loot. After three or four kills, he would head back down to floor 2 and finish this quest up. He stepped out of Deepedge and began scanning the area for targets to put his new Sword Arts to work on. He consumed a Chili Dog with Chili Fries and a Steel-Infused Hot Dog from his inventory to boost his damage without losing any Mitigation.

Combat Encounter
Greater Golem
200 HP
60 DMG

Oscar quickly encountered a Greater Golem to test his new Sword Arts on. What made it greater than a normal golem? Probably the size. It was exactly 20% larger than your ordinary golem. Which made for a 20% larger target to hit. Oscar rushed in and drew his sword. Oscar rushed in, his blade charging with indigo light. He struck with a wild flurry of strokes that kicked up a wild whirlwind around him. The sword wound up doing less damage than the wind. The wind carved deep gashes into the golem's form. The golem attempted to attack with one mighty fist. But Oscar was too elusive. He dipped out of the way, which activated his Savvy Enhancement. He whirled around and readied his blade for the second round. Next turn he would be much more accurate. He was very content with the damage he'd done so far. Haku Senpu was such a wonderful Sword Art. It was a hefty increase to his damage and he couldn't wait to see what the next one did.

Oscar danced around the golem for a bit, getting used to his newfound skill with the game. It wasn't too long ago that he struggled to fight a boar. Now he was going toe-to-toe with a massive golem and had yet to suffer any damage for it. He ran in, stopping just shy of the golem, and launched into a whirlwind of strokes that whipped up the wind around him into a maelstrom. It slammed into the creature, carving deep gashes into it. Stone and dirt exploded out in all directions from the impact. Oscar hopped back, just narrowly avoiding the golem's counterattack and bounced up and down a bit. He was toying with the monster. He could say with relative certainty now that he had come quite a long way. He still had much further to go, but the difference was night and day now. He smiled and rushed in again, getting ready to end this with one final stroke.

It was time for his bread and butter. Ol' reliable. The sword art that had carried him through the lower levels. Han'ei. Two slashes spelled the end of the Greater Golem. It shattered into a thousand shards, leaving only the loot behind for Oscar to collect. He looted his kill, finding a decent chunk of Col, some crafting materials, and even some rare armor and a consumable. Happy with his haul, Oscar turned about and began looking for another enemy to defeat. He was riding high off of that particular fight. It was so nice to actually feel like he was doing some damage now. It had been slow progress, but he had finally made it to the point where he wasn't praying that something hit so he wouldn't have to worry about counterattacks. He had truly learned the five D's of Dodgeball now. Before long, Oscar found another Greater Golem to smack around with his sword. Today was going to be a good day.

Combat Encounter
Greater Golem
200 HP
60 DMG

With his second target acquired, Oscar drew his blade and advanced. Bloody Howl began to glow with a deep purple light as Oscar made his way towards the Greater Golem. He delivered a powerful flurry of slices, each carving a nasty gash into the creature's hide. The wind shear generated by the attack buffeted the creature and forced it to step back a single pace. It raised a mighty fist and drove it hard into Oscar's chest, knocking the wind out of him and sending him flying backwards. Somehow, Oscar was able to correct himself in midair and landed lightly on his feet. He took a moment to catch the breath that had been forced out of his lungs. The two of them had exchanged critical blows, but Oscar was faring much better than the golem was. Another hit like that and the fight would be decided next turn. Oscar just had to pray the gods of the critical hits were on his side today.

Oscar advanced again, delivering a second Haku Senpu to the golem. Between that and his bleed effect, the golem shattered into a thousand shards that were scattered to the wind. Oscar collected his loot - Col, some materials, and a trinket - and decided to head back down to floor 2 while his health and energy regenerated. He really needed to finish that quest at some point today. As much as he would have like to stay up here and drop a bunch of rocks like they were, well, a bunch of rocks, he had a job to do. So back to Deepedge he went. He wove through the streets until he reached the teleport platform. Just a quick laser light show later and he was back in Urbus. Invigorated by his fight, Oscar strode confidently towards the gate and - by extension - the quest tracker. That child would be rescued lickety-split. Then he could go back to farming Golems up on floor seven.

Oscar made his way through the forest, careful to avoid any wolves or bears. His first obstacle was that the shortest path between him and the cave took him through the area where the Venom Snapper spawned. Even though he was stronger now, Oscar had no desire to tango with that thing or its minions again. So he had to make a large loop off course in order to avoid the area. Once he was safely through, Oscar happily strolled on along. The cave was still a fair distance away from him, but it was okay. Provided him plenty of time to regenerate his energy for the bats that totally weren't in the cave. Oscar whistled a tune as the made his way through the forest, pushing aside pushes and young trees alive as he carved his own path through the thick brush. He was a survivalist at heart, so this locale was right up his alley. He enjoyed hiking through the woods with an extreme passion.

It didn't take an exceptionally long amount of time for Oscar to reach the cave marked on his map. He knew a young NPC girl would be inside of it. He also knew that there were probably bats and that he would take a penalty to his attacks due to the darkness. But Oscar entered anyway. This was a level 2 quest. What threat could it possibly pose to him. He was pretty sure his wounds would heal faster than they could make them. Well, not right now anyway. He still needed to invest in the Battle Healing skill to make that claim. In any case, Oscar pushed into the darkness, feeling his way through with his feet and hands instead of his eyes. The dim light made such an area dangerous. There could be pitfalls or falling rocks that he simply wouldn't be able to see. Despite this, Oscar would continue onward. Traps be darned, Oscar would save this little NPC girl.

Oscar slowly made his way through the cave. He kept his hand on the wall for guidance and slowly shuffled his feet forward to check for any pitfalls. Thankfully, the ground beneath his feet didn't give way to any holes or crevices. It was a welcome change from the last cave he explored. In the darkness, he saw a glimmering spot on the wall. He pressed his hand to it and the gathering progress bar began to fill. After a few moments, it was completely filled and Oscar had gathered a crafting material. He pressed forward and, in the distance, began to hear the faint sobs of a little girl. He followed the sound and, eventually, the tunnel opened up into a large chamber. It was almost pitch black in here. "Psst," Oscar hissed, trying to get the child's attention quietly. "Are you okay? Follow my voice. I'm here to get you out of here."

Oscar heard the flapping of wings through the darkness. Oh boy. Here we go.

He drew his blade and listened to the sound. He could barely see in front of him, much less make out the enemy flying around in the darkness. But, he needed to get this quest done, so the creature had to die. There was a loud squeal from the murk and the flapping grew closer. Oscar lashed out, attempting to use Wa Shu to dispatch the creature. His blade met only air. Thankfully, the enemy had missed it's mark as well. Oscar saw an icon appear on his status bar. Savvy had activated. The enhancement would make it much easier to his the creature next round. He readied his sword and tried in vain to peer through the darkness. His eyes weren't helping him so Oscar would have to rely on his other senses to find his enemy. He'd really have to make a point to invest in night vision at some point. Fighting in these dark caves was for the birds.

The second round had begun. Oscar was no closer to being able to find the bat in the darkness that he had been the last round. The sounds of its flapping wings echoed off of the walls of the cavern, throwing Oscar's aim off. One moment he was standing there, ready to strike. The next moment, he felt fangs digging into his shoulder. He winced in pain and attempt to use Wa Shu while the creature was still attached to him. His attack missed by a mile. He felt the creature detach itself from him and heard it ascend into the air once more. What he wouldn't give for a flashlight right about now. Heck, he'd settle for a torch. He shook his head and closed his eyes. Perhaps the lack of vision would bolster his hearing and give him just enough of an edge to deal a fatal blow to the creature. Even if it didn't, it wasn't as if his eyes were helping him much anyway. He'd take any help he could get at this point.

Oscar heard the fluttering of wings as the bat came in for another pass. This time, however he was ready. He sliced the air swiftly, feeling the resistance as his blade bit into the creature's hide. Then, he followed up with a combination of slashes from all directions. Then, he ended his onslaught with a powerful vertical chop. The bat slammed into the ground and Oscar heard the sound of the creature shattering into a million pieces. Its health was so low that there was no loot to be had. But at least the bat was dealt with. Oscar opened his eyes. Thanks to their being closed, he had adjusted to the darkness a bit better. He could just make out a figure huddled against the wall of the cavern. Oscar is had to be the child he was looking for. But before he could grab her and start to make their way out of the cave, he heard the sounds of another bat flying into the room. He groaned and readied his blade. Hopefully this wouldn't take long.

Oscar heard the bat swoop down in an attempt to sink its fangs into his shoulder. He dipped out of the way and attempted to counter attack with his weapon. His Wa Shu Sword Art hit only air. Oscar heard the creature ascend back into the sky as he swore under his breath. Night Vision would be a really great skill to have right now. But, then again, it wasn't all bad. The evaded attack had activated Savvy, which would bolster his accuracy on his next attack. Hopefully he would only need one more. It would be quite a nasty surprise if this bat was, in fact, stronger than the last one. But if it wasn't, a single Wa Shu would be sufficient enough to dispatch it. That was, perhaps, the saving grace here at least. He might not have been able to see very well, but if he managed to score a hit it would be the end of the enemy right then and there.

The bat came in for a second pass. Oscar was ready this time. He listened closely, lashing out when he heard the beating of the wings grow closer. He felt the resistance as his blade cleaved through the bat. Oscar followed up with a furious onslaught of blows that was punctuated by a powerful vertical chop. Like the last bat, this one slammed into the ground hard and shattered. Again, it was too weak to loot. But it was out of his way. Oscar would make that particular trade any day of the week. He sheathed his blade and slowly made his way over to the sobbing child. "It's okay, your mom sent me," Oscar said as he offered the child his hand. She grabbed onto his hand with her dainty extremity and together they made their way towards the entrance. With no bats to bother them, all they had to be mindful of was pitfalls and traps in the floor.

Progress was slow. Almost agonizingly so. Oscar had to make sure the way was safe not only for him, but also for the child that was clinging to his hand for dear life. Every few steps, he would stop and make sure that the path was clear of any dangers. After what felt like an eternity, Oscar could make out the faint light from the mouth of the cave. He didn't let that get him too excited. He had to continue with his slow and steady rate of travel. No sense losing it right at the finish line. Progress was even slower now. Oscar was more cautious now that he could see the light. But, eventually, the tunnel was completely illuminated. He could see nothing barring their path. So he picked up the girl and make a beeline towards the light. He was beyond gleeful to have this particular stage of the quest be over and done with. He hated caves.

“HELP ME!”

As Oscar left the cave, he heard terrified shrieks in the distance. Forgetting everything for a moment, he broke into a sprint. The quest could wait. He wasn’t going to stand around while someone was in trouble. Grass crunched under his feet as he raced across the plains. Leeroy and Jenkins kept pace with him, despite him pouring on all of the speed he could. In the distance, he could just barely make out two figures. One was lying upon the ground and the other was standing over him. The glint of a blade in the sunlight was unmistakable.

Oscar’s pupils dilated. He felt the surge of blood through his veins at the sight. Everything seemed to slow down. Everything except him, that is. Even though he was putting everything he had into it, Oscar somehow found the means to dig even deeper and pour on even more speed. The grass and flowers raced by like a blur as he bounded over the meadow that separated them. The covered this distance like a bolt of blue lightning, stopping just short of the attacker.

His eyes flicked to the man’s health bar. Esker. He’d remember that. Then he stepped forward, digging his left foot into the dirt. He cocked his right fist back and then threw it forward, pouring all of his strength and weight into the punch. His fist connected with the man’s cheek, sending him sprawling into the dirt. He felt relief. For the time being, the man on the ground was safe. He turned his attention to him, disregarding the assailant for the time being.

“Are you oka-” Oscar was cut short by the malicious sneer on the man’s face. He rose to his full height and drew an Assault Spear. Oscar was confused as to what was going on. Wasn’t this guy under attack? Then he saw the health bar. It was full. Oscar had been so focused on the attacker that he didn’t bother to look at health bars. The gears were turning. He had to get to the bottom of what was going on here.

“Hey Esker, you okay?” The man - Loman - asked.

Esker rose to his feet with a chuckle. He rubbed his cheek before pointing his rapier at Oscar. “Yeah, I’m good. That plan never fails. I bet he didn’t even look at the cursors.”

It was true, he didn’t. His eyes flicked between Esker and Loman. Both had green cursors. Which meant…

“Look at that Esker, his cursor’s Orange. We’d be doing the game a favor by getting rid of him,” Loman stated sarcastically.

Things were starting to fall into place. Oscar had fallen into a trap. Loman was never in any danger. They just wanted to bait him into going orange so they could attack him with impunity. Something crossed his mind, however. Something Esker said.

That plan never fails.

A sudden coldness swept over Oscar. His deer-in-the-headlights expression had given way to a steely, defiant one. He just had one question for these guys. “How many people have you pulled this on?”

Loman laughed and shrugged his shoulders. “What does it matter. You’re gonna join ‘em soon enough.”

Enough, then.

Loman and Esker charged at Oscar, their weapons at the ready. Oscar didn’t move to draw his blade. He stood motionless as they advanced. He remained stock still as their weapons penetrated his body. He looked up at his health bar and smirked. It had barely budged. Both hands shot up and trapped their weapons, holding them firmly within his body. There was too much adrenaline to feel pain. Too much rage to particularly care if he did.

“Right before you guys attacked, a thought occurred. You prey on lower leveled players. So, I took a bit of a gamble that you two weren’t very high leveled yourselves.” He took this moment to reveal his own level. 18. Far higher than what they were probably used to dealing with. After all, this was close to a quest area. A low one at that. They probably lied in wait to trick unsuspecting newer players. Trick and kill them.

“Looks like I was right.”

The smug sneers on their faces quickly were quickly replaced with slack-jawed horror. They tried in vain to pry their weapons free of Oscar’s body, but his grip kept them firmly trapped. A flash of annoyance spread across Oscar’s features as he pulled their weapons deeper into his body. Esker and Loman, as a result, were pitched forward until both of them were inches away from Oscar’s face.

“You two are scum. And do you know what happens to scum?” He pushed them away. Both of them went sprawling to the ground as Oscar drew Bloody Howl. He approached Esker first, the ebon blade glinting in the sunlight. He raised his sword to strike. “It gets wiped away.” Bloody Howl took on an azure glow as Oscar brought it down upon the defenseless Esker. Loman watched in horror as - in a single strike- Esker’s health was almost completely depleted. Esker grasped for Loman, pleading for help.

Oscar sheathed his sword. He had made his point. He wanted to kill them. Every fiber of his being screamed for it. But he wasn’t going to stay orange forever over these two fools. But he would keep them in line. He sent the two of them friend requests. “Accept them,” he commanded through grit teeth. The two of them couldn’t press the button fast enough. Their names propagated on his list and, with it, their map data.

“I’ll be watching you. If I see you both back here, I’ll come back. If I even get an inkling that you guys are pulling this trick again, I’ll come back. If you remove me from your list, I will find you. I think you know what happens if I do.” He jerked his head in the direction of town. “Now get lost.”
