[SP-F4] Duel at Dusk (Night's King)

Recommended Posts

Atop a mountain outside a fortress, a dark cloaked player stood. An orange crystal spun over the figure's head, a dagger hidden from view in their sleeve. This player was Hidden, most wanted player in all of Aincrad. The bounty on her head exceeded all others, as Adrian was still unknown by most. She trained in private, building her levels slowly when she could. She only left her hiding hole under the cover of darkness. She had teamed herself up with Adrian, but was told to await his next move. He was plotting something, and most likely he was ensuring that he would not fail. Many players stayed away from her, but there were few that tried to bring up a squabble. She put them down quickly and ensured they would never bother them again. Fear was something she was to ensue on this world. From fear, came respect. Despite framing her, it was almost helpful for the bounty to be on her head. Her Fiance, Sey, never understood why she liked it. He wanted to clear her name. She wanted to build upon it. Despite Domarus's... faults, she still intended to build an empire with her at the top. Opening the door to the fortress, she would step inside, breathing in the chilly air. It was time to finish yet another quest.

She stepped to the middle of the room, looking on ahead at the stairway that would lead to the throne room of the fortress. Why Kayaba thought that this was a thought out quest, she couldn't guess. If he was going to trap her inside of this, at least give her a little bit of fun. Give her some story to delve into. He occasionally made edits to the stats and quests, as if they were in a beta version of the game. He should have finished the world before they started. She watched as four enemies began to approach her. Hardly giving them any thought, she let her eyes travel the room, searching for any traps and vantage points. The enemies would barrel at her, wielding an axe of bone. As the first began to approach her, she ducked under the swing and leap upward, aiming attack downward at its exposed head and body. She sent a flurry of attacks downward, but much to her surprise the Wight had put the axe in a defensive position, blocking her attacks. Landing on the ground, she would kick backwards to prevent being countered.

The Frost Wight resumed its attack, charging her with its axe. It had gotten the luck the first time. She was on a lower leveled floor, she gave her attack far too much slack. Letting out her air in small breaths, she would anticipate her enemies slash and twist away from the attack when it came. As she dodged its attack, she would push off the ground, using Accel Raid once more to send a flurry of strikes at her opponent. Her dagger's normal orange light would be overcome with a solid black light. Thrusting her blade into her opponent, it would slide through almost all forms of defense, attacking the foe more directly. As she pulled away from her attack, a shock was sent though the opponents body and left an open gash to make it bleed. The attack itself would kill her opponent, leaving nothing but data shards. The next Frost Wight would begin its attack and she would sigh.

Weaklings were far too boring to fight with. She was use to facing creatures and players equal and far above her level. While she lost, she had taken on Itzal, and while she hadn't stood a chance she put a good number on him. Her fighting style worried that of Hestia. Hestia warned to not take her alone 1 on 1 and not to attempt unless they were Tier Three. Most of the time, she didn't fight to her maximum capabilities. She had the option of fighting with Umbra, but she refrained from it more ties than not. If she gave her full power all the time, what mystery would be left to her? The Frost Wight finally reached her, attempting to split her down the middle with its axe. She ducked under the attack, and came back up with her dagger in reverse grip. The long gash would shatter the enemy into data crystals and leave two opponents left to fight. "If you all could just... stand aside? That would be great"

To her distaste, the remaining Frost Wights did not seem to want to follower her request. The third Frost Wight charged after her, axe in hand. Letting out a sigh, she would drop her arm to her side, allowing the Frost Wight to come closer. As the enemy got into range, it would slash its axe in a sweeping motion. She would leap up, deflecting the blade and spin quickly in a circle, cycling a dark storm of death at the top of her opponent. Her Dagger ripped through her opponents body, killing it almost instantly. As she dropped to the ground, she noticed a long gash on her stomach. The axe must have met its mark after her blade slipped off. She shot a dangerous glare at the oncoming opponent. She was trying to be perfect about this, but she allowed herself to be hit by something that pitiful. It took a small chunk her health out, but nothing that she couldn't handle. One final enemy remained before the big boss.

The final Frost Wight would charge her, why they decided to wait to attack one at a time, she didn't know. Her lack of AOE attacks appreciated that. As the enemy got into battling range, she would step into to meet her opponent. Without worrying to dodge any attack, she unleashed her attack directly at her opponents chest, attempting to strike it before it got the chance to make its attack. Her dagger made contact with its chest, swiftly ending its life. Satisfied with her work, she sheathed her dagger within her sleeve and looked back to the large staircase that led to the boss. She should probably let some of her energy regenerate before taking on such a foe. Her build wasn't made to take direct damage from a boss. She needed to be quick and precise with all of her movements. If she could land a status on the boss, then perhaps she could pull it off rather easily. It would take a good few attacks to finish it off however.

The long wait for Adrian to return to her was almost grueling. He had promised to help her get on Itzal's level, but he was too busy with his own things. She didn't have to match Itzal's game level, just skill level. If she could move as fast as him, she would be able to dodge his attacks and counter. Whittle him down that way. Itzal was lacking in defenses, so if she could dodge his attacks and then attack she could beat him. Hestia was a different story. Her tank build allowed her to take minimal damage along with healing constantly. She would have to activate phase almost constantly to deal significant damage. She also had to somehow increase Umbra's ability. Itzal's familiar was quick and powerful and had a electric affinity. Unless it was dark, Umbra would stand little chance against the dragon. The darkness would match their abilities, but the chances of engaging in that battle were slim. If only she were already on their level. Having to lay low all the time did her no help.

It had even been a while since she used her Elucia allias. She just did not have the mood to go into the towns, even if there was info brokers that could tell her what was going on throughout the floors. As far as she knew, most info brokers worked with Hikoru, someone who would know the name Elucia. He could then relay this information to Hestia or Itzal. She wasn't ready for a fight with them yet. She had tried before but lost rather sorely. If Hikoru himself wanted to fight her, she wasn't even ready to fight him. A unique skill user and someone she based her attack patterns off. He would almost be able to predict her patterns because they were very similar to his own. The quick attacks, fast movement, quick retreats. All of it came from him.She had watched him take on the treants using those. Of course, she couldn't attack from the shadows like he did yet and when push came to shove she could fight differently but she didn't even want to risk the chance.

Beginning to walk over to the staircase, she would look up. Immediately, she felt colder as an ominous atmosphere crept down. This was definitely where the boss was. Slowly walking up one stair at a time, it would be half of a minute before she reached the top. A large room affronted her eyes, frozen banners hung across the walls and suits of armor stood around the perimeter. Had she not known what the quest entailed she would have guessed that the suits of armor would also attack her. At the end of a long red carpet was a throne. Seating this throne, a tall man, crown atop his head. His skin was a pale blue as if he had died from hypothermia. This figure would stand and pull out an axe half as large as he. Finally, the figure would raise his hand and her arms would immediately feel sightly heavier. "If you are done, I'd like to just get this over with. I do have things to do other than this" The Night's King would charge her and the final battle would commence.

She walked forward as the Night's King barreled forward. He stood about a foot taller than her and as he got close he slashed his axe with a mighty force down at her. She leapt backwards, the axe creating a crack in the ground as it hit. Instead of giving her a moment to react, the Night's King lifted the axe and begun to attack again. Unsheathing her dagger, she would begin to fight. She activated Eternal Cyclone becoming a whirlwind of darkness that struck her opponent thirteen times in a matter of two seconds. However, the Night's King did not falter at all and slammed his axe into her side sending her flying. As she hit the ground she would enter a roll and get back onto her feet. The Night's King was already after her again, his attack pattern limited but constant. If she took too many more hits she would fall first. She needed to get a critical or evade his attacks.

Rushing forward at her was the Night's King. As he came closer the smell of frozen death drew in. She retreated from the Night's King a short distance as she ran towards the wall. Leaping up, she would kick off the wall to backflip over the Night's King and land behind him. With the quick moment that his back was turned, she darted in with a full power attack. She had to hit this critical. Her weapon became enveloped in its darkness as the Phase enhancement would activate. As she reached the back of her opponent she would slash from all different directions, cutting her opponent with all of her force and power. The enemy would fall to its knees as a shock was sent though its body, immobilizing it. Her true power lied in her criticals, if she activated them it rendered a opponent useless while dealing massive damage. "Should have thought about this before you even thought to take on the Shadow Walker"

With the hard part of the battle over she took a breath. She had to admit, for a second she had been worried. The fighting tactic of the Night's King resembled that of a boar on the first floor, but its speed and attack power made up for that. The boss struggled against the venom in its body but its struggle was pointless. There was nothing that could escape the Paralytic Venom unless they were immune to it. She thrust her dagger into the Night King's shoulder blade, earning a grunt of dissatisfaction from the boss. She stepped away as the timer was running out, granting the boss free movement once more. The boss stood, looking to her. With its health in the red zone, it was sure to switch up its attack pattern. She had only one strike left to finish it off. Then she could be done and leave this frozen hell of a fourth floor. 'I should finish this like with that last Frost Wight'.

The Night's King barreled at her like a freight train, its speed building with each step. A speed that it was almost on her level. A smile came to the cloaked figure's lips. Speed was one of the things she excelled in, it was what she had put all of her pride into. Itzal was only faster for now, she would surpass her limit. Kicking off of the ground, she would move to meet her opponent. As she came into range, she would thrust her weapon forward at her targets heart with as much force as she could muster. Her dagger met its mark, breaking her opponent into shards of data crystals. Taking a breath, she would sheathe her weapon. The quest would be instantly complete, boosting her level higher. Just a bit more training and she would have enough for precision. Afterwards, she would invest into hiding or battle healing. Battle Healing would definitely do her some good.

As she turned, the sound of clapping reached her ears. The sound came from the top of the stairs, where a man dressed entirely in black stood. His eyes seemed to almost glow with a reddish tint and a fedora sat atop wavy hair. His face produced a grin that was aimed at her. She shook her head and headed towards the stairs. She was going to ignore him. "Bravo, Bravo. You handled that rather nicely sweetie" She walked forward until she came within five feet of the man. "I am not your 'sweetie'. Also, I was not putting on a show for your amusement." The man laughed. "Ah, but it was rather amusing. Learn to lighten up dear" A sound almost like a growl would quietly emit from her throat. "Do you know who I am? Do you know what I could do to you? I would just get out of the way if I were you" The man laughed once more. "I know exactly who you are. Why else do you think I followed you up this frozen mountain. As for what you could do to me... I'm not so sure Shadow Walker."

The man seemed rather sure of himself, but so did every other one of challengers. She sighed and the man would offer her a smile. "Just remember. You asked for this" she would tell him. Grasping the hand of her dagger in her sleeve, she would dart forward, using the same move she used to finish the boss. In a short second and a bright flash of orange, her attack was sent flying at the chest of the man in front of her. Surprised she was when her attacked hit something firm, her attack not blasting back the opponent. Once the aftereffect of the attack subsided, she was left thrusting into a small sword produced by the man. A chuckle escaped the man's lips. "What" she gasped. She withdrew her blade and made several attacks in a flurry as fast as she could. A tempest was created from the strikes she produced, the angry orange light of her weapon dancing like fire. Each one of her attacks stopped like the first, the fedora man seemed like it was hardly anything.

She leapt back away from the man. "How did you stop all of those?" The man chuckled. "Easily. I thought the Shadow Walker was used to fighting battles above their own ability. Isn't that why they are supposed to be so powerful?" Hidden's eyes opened wide. This man had come not to kill her. His intention was a fight to death, a battle of the ages. He expected her skill to match his when he was probably on par with Itzal. "No quips left to share? Then I guess i'll make my move". In a flash, the man was at her side, swinging his blade at her neck. She ducked to the side, but the blade grazed her cheek, cutting it open. She pushed off the ground to leap backwards, but as she did he kept right up with her. Using his fist, he would slam her into the ground. "I thought they said you were to be feared. It seems I was mistaken about you" The man sheathed his weapon and began to walk away. She picked herself up off the ground, her health at the yellow zone now. Had he actually done more than grazed her she would be in trouble.

Hidden looked at the fedora man as he slowly walked away. "Who are you?" The man would turn, a sneer on his face. "The strong ask the questions. Not the weak" She bit her lip from giving him a retort. She understood she had no chance of beating this guy. She watched as the man reached the staircase once more before turning back to her. "You being weak is unforgivable. I expected someone that could compete on my level. Until you can defeat me, I will make your life far more miserable than it is. You will survive or you will die. Its your call" The man would snap his fingers and a light-haired boy would step up the stairs. They would speak quietly and the boy would brandish a sword at her. "Alright Shadow Walker. This will be a fight to the death. Defeat him and I will let you know who I am" Her eyes widened. Was he really sending someone else to fight her? She was at half of her health so he stood a good chance, but why even risk it?

The boy would charge at her with a sword of blue hue. However, unlike the Fedora Man, she could see his movements coming. The boy was quick, but not to the extent where she couldn't keep up. As the boy got close, he slashed at her. Unlike the Night's King, the slashes weren't wild. They held precision and were much harder to dodge. Although she managed to dodge them, the next one came before she even got the chance to counter or move away. Stuck on the defensive, she was almost certain this battle was a loss. However, she wasn't yet fighting at her fullest power. "Umbra" she whispered underneath her breath. Out of her shadow came slipped a creature that transformed into three-dimensional shape. A small shadow fox had been awakened from her slumber. After perceiving her situation, Umbra leapt into the battle, ramming into the boy. In the split second of surprise, Hidden leapt away, finally given enough room to breath. Umbra moved to sit beside her feet. "Got a familiar working for you huh?"

Hidden payed no attention to the boys words. This was fight and she needed to take the advantage while she still could. Her next step was to try something she and Umbra had practiced for a little while but hadn't exactly perfected. Thanks to her all black attire, it was easy to mock her. "Shadow self" she commanded her familiar. The familiar merged back into her shadow and Hidden remained completely still. After a second, her opponent would perceive her darting toward him at full speed. Luckily, the speed made the boy slash at the shadow, splitting the illusion of her that was Umbra in half. It would take a minute for Umbra to regenerate, however she already had everything she needed. As soon as Umbra had taken her form and charged, she charged a few steps behind, attacking as soon as the boy's sword sailed through Umbra. Her dagger met its mark, the angry orange glow flying into his chest. He was pushed back a few feet, but her onslaught didn't stop. She couldn't stop until the boy could fight no more. Everyone stopped when their health was really low.

She pressed on with the attack her dagger an orange flash of destruction. The boy tried to block with his weapon, but a quick thrust of her dagger sent his sword skidding across the ground. She activated her strongest sword art, Eternal Cyclone. Within thirty seconds her opponent was covered in slash marks and his health reduced to a few remaining pixels along with her energy. "Alright. I win. Now you sit here while I go get some answers" she told the boy. Turning to the Fedora Man, she would begin to shout. "Now. What is your na-"a sword pierced her body, protruding from her chest. "Don't ever turn your back to the enemy. Say, I've never heard of you having mercy before. Why start now?" Flipping her dagger in her hand, she would stab the boy in the side and he would crumble to data pixels. His attack had dealt significant damage, leaving her also in the red. Breathing heavily, she realized she had just killed her first player. She glared over at the Fedora Man who had a smug smile left on his face. "First. Why did you have him fight me? If you wanted me dead, you could have done it yourself" The man would chuckle. "I am waiting for someone worthy of the title Shadow Walker. Everything is going as I want. With you having killed Lapis, your name will be on the death board. The Aincrad Police Department will be searching for you even more" Her eyes widened. How far had he thought ahead? He managed to beat her and then make her conditions even worse. Hestia would eat something like this up, her being a murderer as well as jail breaking a psycho. "Tell me your name. I am going to hunt you down until you die by my hand or natural causes" A sneer came to the lips of the Fedora Man.

"Me? Well I am just a man, passing misfortune wherever I go. However, you can call me Risque" With that, the turned and walked down the stairs, leaving her in silence.
