What the hell was Koga doing out in the middle of a floor at night...alone, no less. The simple answer would be he just hadn't been able to sleep. The truthful answer would be nightmares. Ever since this death-game started, he'd been getting them almost every night. The same one, over and over again. Every night, Koga relived the Sword Art Online: Day 1.

The moon shone over the grassy plains as the man tried to calm his fraying nerves. He knew full well the dangers involved with coming out here right now. He supposed he didn't really care that much. Who gave a damn if he died choking on his own blood after a boar gored him? Who cared if he killed a thousand boars either? No one. Because he here was, a level one noob who couldn't even...who couldn't even...

Koga's eyes burned as he fought back the tears he knew were about to come. With a tight grip on the pommel of his weapon, his knuckles turned white, and his head hung low. They couldn't be dead, right? I mean, this was all just some long, drawn out nightmare that he was bound to wake up from eventually. But two years later, and he still hadn't woken up.

Eventually, Koga recovered his wits, and he wiped away the stray tears with the sleeve of his coat. With a deep breath he resolved himself to keep moving forward. He needed to do something. Anything...preferably kill something...

A long time ago, back in the real world, Koga discovered that combat was extremely cathartic. In SAO, it was more so. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Maybe it was the focus that he had during it. Or maybe it was the overcoming of the challenge. He didn't know, all he did know was that it was his one escape in this world. Thankfully there were many things to kill in Aincrad. And just as many things that wanted to kill him.

The latter fact had never bothered Koga. The thing that scared him was losing others he'd come to care about. Maybe that was part of the reason he'd refused to adventure out with others and try to free everyone from this damned game. He knew he'd get close to those he fought with. And he knew they'd die eventually.

Boar

Spoiler

HP5 (13 -8) // DMG: 3

It didn't take long for Koga to find something to kill. Boars roamed Floor One constantly, as prolific as rabbits. Besides that, he knew of a few good farming grounds. As soon as he arrived at his favored spot, the man waited until one separated from the others, enough that if he initiated combat, he wouldn't be stuck fighting more than one. As soon as he'd accomplished that, Koga did his best to remain unnoticed by his target, until finally, he charged, his saber glowing a crimson red as he charged the beast. The boar, caught unawares, could do little to avoid the glowing blade as it crashed into its side, draining its HP bar into the yellow.

The boar attempted to retaliate, and it was almost successful. It turned, and attempted to strike Koga with its tusks, but unfortunately for the boar, Koga was quick, and was able to step out of the way, even before the attack was launched.

Boar

Spoiler

HP5  // DMG: 3

Koga readied another attack against the boar, figuring that the poor beast had suffered enough damage to be out of its virtual wits for a moment, but boy was Koga wrong. As Koga raised his saber, the boar leapt at him, striking him right in the sternum. The man fell backwards from the force of the blow, the wind being knocked out of him. Damn, that hurt. Koga had never been struck that hard before by anything in this game. Which wasn't saying especially much, given how low his HP was right now, but that was still a solid twenty-five percent off his health. He wouldn't be able to survive many more blows like that if he didn't end this soon. Koga struggled to find his breath as he got back onto his, glaring at the boar all the while...this guys was going down...Koga wouldn't let something as stupid as a boar kill him.

Boar

Spoiler

HP: 2 (5 -3)  // DMG: 3

The boar got ready to charge Koga again. The posture gave the boar away long before the pawing of the dirt, of the heavy breathing. Koga was ready this time. The man let the boar attempt to strike, rushing forward at him, aiming to skewer Koga on its damned tusks. Not today. Koga span on his heels, avoiding the boar's charge. Koga's blade flashed silver in the moonlight as he brought it down in a vertical strike, right in the boar's hind quarters, eliciting a squeal from it as it careened past him. Easy enough. The boar's HP bar had gone red now, it was on it's last legs. One more hit, Koga reckoned. One more hit, and this stupid boar would be dead. One more hit, and maybe finally, Koga wouldn't feel so sorry for himself, or for his friends. For Hikaru. For Tsukiko, he could kill this pathetic creature.

HP: 0 (2 -2)  // DMG: 3

Koga wasted no time in closing the distance between himself and the boar. The feeble beast was still scrambling to its feet when Koga stood next to it. The man turned his sword over in his grip, the blade pointing downwards as he lifted the weapon high above his head. And then it was over. The boar burst into a thousand tiny blue fragments and was no more. The loot reward dialogue appeared before Koga, informing him of his winnings. The man dismissed the message. barely glancing at it. Who the hell cared about the loot anyways...he still felt like crap...how foolish was he to think that killing a stupid boar redeemed him of his failings...Did he really believe Hikaru or Tsukiko could be brought back just by killing the worthless mobs that spawned in on the first floor of this death-game? No. Most player by now could kill a boar with a snap of their fingers. Who exactly did he think he was, to aspire to make it to the frontlines?

He should just go home, Koga figured. I mean really, what was the point of what he was doing at this point? The frontliners were so many levels ahead of him, they'd probably clear the game before he even go close to where they were now. It was a useless effort...

Koga hadn't really noticed at what point he'd turned around and started to walk back to the Town of Beginnings. In the distance he could see the flickering lights of candles through windows, hundreds of lives of players, and even more of NPCs. Even in the game, the world continued on without a single thought for those who lived or died in it. It didn't seem quite fair, that no one except him remembered his two fallen friends. He was the only one left who had any memory of them, at least in this world. It just didn't seem quite fair...Would anyone remember him, Koga wondered. Probably not.

As Koga walked, he remembered the Memorial Wall that sat in the Town of Beginnings. On it was inscribed the name of every player who had died since this death game started...and how they'd died. Koga had visited it a few times before. Each time had been exceedingly difficult. He'd searched for his friends names each time. Near the beginning of the wall, within the first one hundred names, was the username 'Musashi'. That had been Hikaru. Cause of Death: Disconnected. Masato remembered the boy fondly. He'd always been the excitable one, happy go lucky, and optimistic. He'd chosen his username after the master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. He'd wanted to play a samurai in the game. Further down the wall was the name 'Venus'. That username had belonged to Tsukiko. She'd chosen it for her love of space. She always said that Venus was the most beautiful of the planetary bodies, at least in her eyes. 'In her eyes' had always been one of her stipulations when voicing her opinions. Cause of Death: Wolf...A long as that wall stood someone would remember them. Even if Koga died, and Masato with him, someone would read their names on the wall, and for a moment they'd be alive again.

Well, it looked like Koga would have to wait before visiting his friends at the Monument. A Boar crossed paths with the player, turning and staring him down. If Koga didn't know any better he'd have thought that the Boar had something out specifically for him. With a tired sigh, Koga drew his weapon again. At this point...he just wanted to go home. To collapse on his bed in the inn and call it a night. No rest for the weary though.

Koga decided to make the first move. His blade glowed crimson for a moment as he moved forward, a Rage Blow ready to strike. The Boar had other ideas however. The creature rushed forward just as Koga closed the distance between them, forcing him to break off from his attack and dodge to avoid the Boar. Damn...that wasn't a good start. Koga hand lost the upper hand now. No Sword Arts for a little while.

The Boar refused to give Koga much time to think about what his next move was going to be, already charging towards the man. Koga spun on his heels, the Boar going past him as he swung his blade, chasing after the creature. His blade cut through nothing but the air, whistling as it did so. Okay, maybe being offensive wasn't the strategy to go with right here. He was going to have to play defensively, at least until his energy restored. Koga switched up his stance, planting his feet firmly on the ground and raising his sword, prepared to block or deflect whatever it was that the Boar would throw at him next. The swordsman had places to be, and he wasn't about to let some two bit mob stop him from getting there. His friends were still waiting for him. And he had things that needed to be said. Things he should've said a long time ago.

The two combatants circled each other for a time. Koga carefully watched the Boar's movements, looking for anything to tell him when the Boar intended to attack him. If the Boar was even capable of doing so, it was probably watching him with the same intentions. Koga wasn't going to be the one to attack this time. That decision might've been a mistake though. The Boar, having grown impatient, charged forward and Koga moved his blade to defend. But he misjudged how quickly the Boar would run at him. It was slower than he'd expected, and Koga's block did little but prevent absolute minimal damage. The Boar collided with the man's leg, draining a small amount of HP from his health gauge. 'Well Koga...git gud scrub...' was about all Koga had thought before steadying himself as the Boar backed off a moment to avoid the possibility of retaliation. Not this time buddy...

The last of Koga's energy ticked to full. Perfect. The man's weight shifted forward, and then he was moving. The swords man's saber began to glow crimson as he charged a Rage Blow. He wasn't going to miss this time. No way in hell. The Boar tried to run at Koga again, but this time the man was ready for it. He side stepped the Boar's attack before bringing his blade down on the Boar's back. A bright red mark appeared on the creature's back and it's health bar went yellow. Nice.

"Oof!"

Koga felt the Boar's tusks dig into his stomach as it flung it's head side to side. The man felt his back hit the ground and contorted his body to roll out of the fall and pop back onto his feet, his sword presented before him, ready to defend, expecting another attack. It didn't come. Alright then...Koga could work with that.

Koga had about had enough of this Boar. It was in his way, and it needed to be gone. Seeing as it didn't want to just walk away, there was only one thing left to do. Kill the damn thing.

The Boar huffed and pawed the earth as it stared down at Koga, still furious at the man for having struck him. In Koga's defense, the Boar had hit him first so...don't fight what you can't beat. The Boar charged again, and Koga let it come towards him. There was no blocking this time. No sword arts either. Just a good old fashioned enraged strike. Just as the Boar was about to strike Koga, the man stepped out of the way, and swung his blade. The squelching sound of metal cleaving through flesh echoed through his ear. A brief burst of light, and Koga knew he'd killed his foe.

The man silently sheathed his sword and resumed his journey back to the Town of Beginnings. He was done here.

The road back wasn't terribly long. Koga could see the rooftops, just barely, illuminated only by the light of the floor's ceiling. If there was one thing Koga couldn't deny, it was that the floors of Aincrad were varied and beautiful. Even though Koga hadn't seen many of them so far, the one's he had all had their own kind of charm. Floor one, for example, reminded him a lot of your fantasy town, which he supposed was the point. A little bit like Rohan from Tolkien's series. Endless plains surrounding a quaint, but grand town. And just like a grand town, there were hundreds of player living there, and even more NPCs. Even if Aincrad didn't exist beyond a bunch of rendered bits and bytes, it was still a world of its own. If it weren't for Kayaba's mad plan, Koga would say it was a world with living in.

These Boars really didn't wanna leave Koga alone tonight...couldn't they have picked any other time? The man supposed he should at least be thankful for the Col and loot, if nothing else. And there really was nothing else. Koga drew his saber and readied himself to fight another Boar, for what seemed like tenth time tonight.

The Boar circled Koga like it was hungry for a bite out of him. Koga didn't recall Boar's being carnivorous or omnivores...Unfortunately for the Boar, Koga was a carnivore, and Boar was starting to sound mighty tasty. The man wasted no time in rushing in towards the Boar, his blade held off to the side, ready to strike as he passed. The Boar decided now was a good time to attack as well, turning this combat into a jousting match. One where Koga had the upper hand apparently. The saber glowed crimson with a Rage Blow as the two approached, and with a quick slash, the Boar's health gauge went yellow. That was a better start.

The Boar skidded through the dirt after Koga had hit it the first time. Koga wasn't about to waste this perfectly good chance. The man rushed in with blade raised. No sword arts this time though, Koga didn't have the energy for that. The man's blade sank into the Boar's side, leaving behind only a single pixel of health for the Boar. Lucky critter.

Koga stepped back from the beast. Well, at least this was going to be a quick fight. The man was beginning to wonder if the Boars ever dropped bacon. Maybe he could find a cook to fry it up for him. Man, Koga really missed bacon. And making toast in the bacon grease. God, few things tasted better than that.

Hey Koga, might wanna pay attention, the Boar is attacking. The man hopped out of the way just in time. Right, kill bacon first, boar later.

Why waste his time? The Boar had missed Koga and now left himself completely open. An easy kill. Koga wasted no time in dashing towards the Boar with his sword aimed right for the creature's torso. The animal was impaled on Koga's saber, and moments later, disappeared behind a curtain of blue, pixelized fragments that burst from the Boar itself.

The man stood, sheathed his weapon, and dusted his hands. Finally...hopefully the rest of the walk to town would be peaceful. No more interruptions...That would be nice now, wouldn't it?

The only sound as Koga walked was indeed the wind blowing across the plains, and the ground beneath his feet. Nice, indeed. If only Koga could've seen that earlier. Honestly, what had possessed the boy to stay cooped up for almost two years? No way Hikaru or Tsukiko would've wanted that for him. He was so stupid sometimes. Get it together son.

Silence. Finally. It had been quiet since Koga's last scuffle with a Boar. He'd been walking for about...twenty? minutes now. Just how far had the man walked since he left the inn this morning? Not only that, but it looked like the sun would start to rise soon. Already the sky was starting to brighten.

At least the town wasn't too far out now. Maybe another five or ten minute's walk. And another five after that, he'd be at the Monument of Life. Koga hadn't visited the Monument in quite some time. He'd only been there once. And it hadn't been a fun trip. The man had brought flowers, and left them at the foot of the Monument. It had been about a week after Tsukiko had died. He'd gone, found his friend's names on the wall, and left soon after. In all honesty, Koga wasn't quite certain that visiting again was the best idea. But, still. It was something he should do.

The Town of Beginnings wasn't quite awake yet. Light was just beginning to slip between the mountain peaks, illuminating the white washed building in a pale light. Some NPCs, Bakers and Blacksmiths mostly, were just beginning to get ready for the day. White smoke poured out from a chimney here, and a chimney there. It honestly was quite the lovely sight.

The Black Iron Palace loomed in the distance, like an ever present sentinel. Or perhaps a knight, clad in dark armor. Whatever the case, there it was, awash with that pale morning light. And that was Koga's destination.

A thousand and more players had already been scratched off the monument. Would Koga join them one day? It wasn't exactly like it was an astronomical possibility. Quite the opposite. And given Koga's ambitions to reach the frontlines, he was pretty sprinting right towards death. Funny, how that worked. To keep himself to get out of this place alive, he had to risk dying. Ironic.

There it was. The Monument of Life. The great stone slab stood proudly in the center of the room, its polished faced commemorating players both dead and alive. Thousand plus names, scratched through with a cause of death and other information besides them. Among those names 'Musashi'. Besides it, a simple statement. 'Disconnected'. Masato took a deep breath as he finally found the name and cause of death. "Hey Hikaru," Masato said. Masato was...well he wasn't not religious. But he wouldn't say he was an extremely religious person either. Still...he hoped, no, he believed his voice would reach his friend.

"It's bee a long time bud. Sorry I haven't visited...I was uh...ah who am I kidding, you know me better than that. I was hiding in my room. Go figure, huh? I let you down, I think. I didn't enjoy this game. At least, until now. You really woulda liked this game I think. It's right up your alley. One hell of a world to explore. And I'm gonna try and see it all. Next time I see you...I'll tell you all about it."
