Fine. The game wanted to spawn a horde of Zombies? Koga would kill a horde of Zombies, or die trying. Let's see who came out on top. The man had already unequipped his armor, standing in the nighttime breeze in just his boots, pants and shirt. The man summoned up his inventory menu and scrolled through it momentarily. All his other consumables were grayed out, unable to be used except those he'd just bought at a vendor. He took the Fairy Floss out of it and devoured it. Perfect. He was ready to go. Now to just find a group of Zombies. Ah, over there...a group of three Zombies were chasing after a couple of NPCs. Perfect. The sound of boots on crashing against the dirt echoed in his ears. As he drew closer, the Zombies heard his approach, and Koga let out a loud battle cry. His weapon glowed crimson as he charged Tsuji Kaze. The weapon flashed outwards, the tip cutting deep into the melting flesh of the first Zombie. Undeterred thanks to it's literally dead virtual nerve endings, the Zombie advanced further, swinging its arms wildly, one connecting with Koga's shoulder. Koga grunted with the impact of the blow, as the other two came upon him. One bit Koga's arm as he brought it up to defend against it, and the other slammed its arms into his side. That hurt...or it would've if the NerveGear didn't numb his senses. The man pushed the three Zombies away and steadied himself. He wasn't gonna be able to sustain this kind of damage for ever... Thank god these things healed as much HP as they did. The man cracked the beverage open and began to down it. Ugh, it tasted absolutely vile. But, on the bright side, Koga watched as his health regenerated back to full. Alright, perfect. The three Zombies weren't done with him though. That was fine because Koga wasn't done with them either. Not by a long shot...they had a lot to atone for. The first and third attacked him at the same time, but Koga had the speed that these shambling morons didn't. he stepped to the side of the first attack, and then the second. The second Zombie saw it's oppurtunity once more and attempted to bite him just as before, but this time, Koga saw it coming. The man grabbed the Zombie by the throat and held it at arms length before shoving it away. Damn these things...damn them for surely causing the deaths of so many players tonight...damn them all! His blade shone bright, crimson and eager for blood with the power of Tsuji Kaze just before he slashed outwards again, slicing effortlessly through the first Zombie's flesh and dropping it's health into the yellow. The Zombie retaliated, lashing out at Koga, who ducked beneath the strike. The third as well attempted to strike Koga. Already low to the ground, he rolled forward and sprang to his feet behind the three Zombies, "C'mon! Hit me!" he shouted, full of rage. These damned mobs...Kayaba's creations. Kayabe who was responsible for his friends names going up on the Memorial Wall. He was gonna kill them...the second Zombie took Koga's invitation, digging its nails into his chest, scratching at him. Okay, maybe it wasn't the best idea to shout at these things to come at him, but what did it matter now? Who knew if this nightmare would ever end? It charged at Koga, it's arms outstretched towards him as if to strangle him. Koga ducked beneath it once more, his weapon flashing crimson as it lashed out at the Zombie, Tsuji Kaze drinking its share of health once more. The second Zombie had its turn at Koga, flailing violently but passing by the man as he stepped to the side...right into the third Zombie. The Zombie wrapped its arms around Koga as it sank its rotting teeth into the man's neck. Koga cried out as he grabbed the Zombie by its head and flipped the undead being over his shoulder. Images flashed through Koga's mind. He and his friends looking around the plains. Fighting some low-level Boars alongside them. Hikaru disappearing with no reason... Koga tried to shake the images from his mind and focus on the fight before him. They were gone. Gone and he did could do nothing now. The man stepped back as the Zombies seemed to attempt to gather their bearings themselves. Once they had, the first Zombie attacked again, just as it had before. Koga didn't waste his energy this time, stepping to the side and slashing quickly, his blade glinting in the moonlight as it bit into the Zombies side. The second Zombie launched itself at Koga, and tackled him to the ground. The man pushed it off, just in time to see the third pounce at him. Koga rolled to the side, avoiding the attack and getting back onto his feet. He needed to heal up again...The man backed away from the Zombies as the two who had taken Koga to the ground got to their feet. These things were tough. Much tougher than he'd expected. He was certain he'd win. He had to win. There wasn't another option for Koga anymore. Win or die. And Koga wasn't about to die to a few Zombies. He still wasn't used to the taste of this stuff. But enough about the disgusting cider, the Zombies were still on the attac. Koga had misjudged the distance between himself and the first Zombie. It reached out with a hand and swatted the empty Spider Cider bottle out of Koga's hand, the glass vessel exploding into blue fragments in mid air. Damn it. Koga dodged the attack from the second attack. He nearly stepped into the arms of of the third Zombie, but the man ducked, right beneath it's arms, only narrowly escaping. The man made a short run away from the three Zombies. He wasn't about to make the same mistake again. Koga readied his sword once more as he stared down the three undead. No, not again. They kept advancing on Koga, even as his blade glowed crimson. Han'ei, a quick two slashes, and the blade of Kuiaratame carved through the first Zombie. Koga had lost count of how many times he had hit this one, and it still wasn't dead. But it's healthbar had gone red. He was getting closer to the first checkpoint. Almost there. That lone thought was what distracted Koga from the thoughts that threatened to burst forth to the forefront of his mind. He pushed them back down, dodging and skirting around the three Zombies, doing his best to keep all three in his vision. He had learned long ago that that was the best way to handle multiple foes. Hopefully more Zombies wouldn't be drawn by the sound of his fight. Koga didn't know if he could handle anymore than these three. He may not have been the strongest player in SAO, or the best fighter in the real world, but he definitely trumped these three Zombies. HIs blade glowed crimson again as the man readied another Han'ei. The blade struck, taking mere chip damage off the first Zombie's health. This was taking too long... The first Zombie reeled backwards from Koga's attack, but the first two were undeterred. They leapt at Koga, and although he managed to keep his footing, one bit into his arm, and the other his leg. The man flailed, throwing them off, for a moment at least. The black-clad man pushed against the earth and jumped backwards, putting distance between himself and the Zombies once more. As quickly as he moved away, they'd move forward once more, slowly closing the gap again. If he chose, he could probably run away, but what was the point? Hikaru, one of his oldest friends. They'd know each other since they were kids. Koga could remember playing Red Rover with him in elementary school. Walking to school with him for years. Tears threatened to start streaming as Koga dodged around the second Zombie's attack. It was all Kayaba's fault...This death game was his...the consequences were his... Koga felt the third Zombie slam into him, his health almost falling into the yellow. The man gathered his sense, his blade glowing a terrible crimson, Han'ei, charging within it. Koga screamed out as he blindly lashed out with his blade. His blows cleaved cleanly through the first Zombie, the enemy bursting into a cloud of blue shards. The man panted, the first of his enemies defeated...gone. Gone just like Hikaru. But the Zombie could always respawn. Hikaru couldn't...not anymore. The man backed off from the Zombies and equipped his Shaded Coat. His stats instantly went up as the blue glow engulfed him and Koga readied his weapon again. The Zombies attempted to take advantage of Koga's momentary vulnerability, but with a speed he hadn't displayed before, Koga skirted around them. The Zombies missed by a wild margin, and Koga smirked a little. yeah, this felt right now. He could do this, he could pull through this fight and come out on top. He just had to concentrate and forget the past for a moment. He had to forget about Hikaru and Tsukiko...but how could he forget? How could he forget his friends after everything that had happened. He couldn't...he just couldn't... Having his armor equipped didn't change that. The man pulled out another Spider Cider...man he was never gonna get used to this taste...he might actually throw the rest of these out after today. His healthbar returned to full for the third time this fight...but it didn't matter this time. Koga was tackled to the ground by the Zombies, their rotting stench filling his nostrils as his vision was obscured by the sight of decaying teeth and flesh. "Get off me!" the man shouted as he thrashed on the ground attempting to throw the Zombies off. They bit and clawed at him, his health bar slowly draining once more. Tsukiko... An image of the girl he'd once had a crush on appeared in his mind. He couldn't die...not yet...not when he still had a job to do... "I said, get off!" Koga managed to throw the two Zombies off and scramble to his feet. The second launched itself at him from a mere foot away. Koga barely had the time to dodge out of the way. He could feel the wind pass by him as he moved away. The third Zombie was hot on his heels, arms flailing. Off balance from the first dodge, Koga had to spin on his heels just to stay on his feet. His blade glowed crimson as Koga charged a Tsuji Kaze attack. His blade lanced out and cut into the flesh of the second Zombie, draining a good deal of it's health. Okay, he wasn't dead...he could do this. Four hits for each Zombie, Koga reasoned. Or at least thereabouts...he could do this, as long as he didn't panic and kept on his toes, he was going to be fine. These Zombies were no match for Koga, or at least that's what he told himself. Tsukiko kept invading Koga's mind. She'd always been kind to him. Supported him. When his relationship with his family had fallen through, she'd been there. When everyone else told him he wouldn't make it as a developer, she was the only one who believed he could do it. He was the man he was now because of her. And she was dead. Dead from this world and that. Killed by a worthless Boar. He couldn't forgive himself for letting her die. Koga's blood boiled with each new memory. Without thinking, he began to channel Tsuji Kaze. The second Zombie drew closer. Too close. "Just die!" Koga cried out his blade flashing through the air leaving a trail of bloody red light behind it as it cleaved through the Zombie's chest. He hardly noticed the Burn and Blight icons appear next to the Zombie's healthbar, rapidly draining its health until it burst into blue fragments, carried away on the wind. The last Zombie moved towards Koga, and as the red left Koga's vision, he moved out of the way of the Zombie's attack. His vision was blurred, and almost tripped over himself as he did so. Not now. He had to finish this first. The man charged his Tsuji Kaze again. The weapon glowed. He lashed outwards blindly. His vision still blurred, his attack sailed through the air, hitting nothing. The Zombie fared far better. The rotten foe swung at Koga, hitting him in the side of the head. Koga stumbled a step or two before recovering his footing. Damn it. He couldn't fight like this. He was so close...but...the last one was still at full health...how much longer would this take? The man looked through the welling tears at the distorted image of the Zombie approaching him. He could do this. Just...just a few hits, that's all it would take. He could finish this fight, he could avenge his friends. He had to! He wasn't about to die without doing so. He had to stop being Masato now. He had to be Koga. What could Masato have done for Tsukiko? What could he have done to save her? He could have stepped in front of the Boar that killed her. He could have knocked her out of the way. He could have killed it sooner. So many things that he could've done, but hadn't. Just like he could've hit his foe now. The Zombie charged at Koga again as Koga channeled another Tsuji Kaze. The man let loose his attack a moment too late, the Zombie's nails biting into Koga's shoulder before his attack could connect. The swordsman backed away frantically. Why couldn't he hit this thing? Why couldn't he kill it? Why couldn't he just pull himself together? Why couldn't he get these damning thoughts out of his head long enough to just not die? Why did any of this have to happen anyways. Why was he stuck here, why were any of them here?! There was nothing left to do but fight anyways. Koga pulled his blade to his side once more. It glowed again, just as it always did, as he channeled another Tsuji Kaze. He lashed out and struck the Zombie. He did it! He finally hit this last damned Zombie. But the Zombie didn't seem to care about Koga's small victory. It kept walking forward and fell upon his, sinking it decaying teeth into his shoulder draining the man's healthbar. It was about to go into the yellow for the first time this whole fight! No! The man pushed the Zombie away, and stepped backwards, putting as much distance as he could between himself and it. He wouldn't give this bastard the satisfaction. The Zombie stumbled backwards and Koga attempted to focus on his next move. He was going to have to heal. Even if, in the yellow, he was still safe, he didn't wanna risk it. The swordsman reached for another Spider Cider and cracked it open and began to drink. As his health restored, Koga coughed, tossing away the glass bottle. As it hit the ground it dissipated into blue shards, just like his friends once had done. He wasn't going to join them though. Not today at least. The Zombie wasn't so sure of that fact however. It flailed and thrashed and Koga had almost made it away when he got clipped by one of the Zombie's flailing appendages. The grotesque undead creature didn't seem satisified however, forcing Koga backwards, and to stay on his toes. The man skirted, ducked, dodged under and around the remainder of the Zombie's attacks. This was quickly becoming an exercise of reducing the damage he took, not dealing damage. Something had to change, but Koga didn't know what. He was frustrated, angry, and had no way to solve either of his problems right now. Koga had to let go of his anger. At the game, at Kayaba, at himself. For a long time, spite was the only thing that Koga had had to help him push forward. Yukiko had come along and changed all that, showing him that spite would one day haunt him. That he could lean on others. For the two years since Tsukiko's death, he'd forgotten that...but now? Images of Noct, his partner. The woman he had come to love. He had her. He didn't need spite anymore. A sense of clarity washed over Koga. He breathed deep and watched the Zombie's movements. He saw the attack coming long before it was executed. The man shifted his weight, allowing the Zombie to pass by him. Koga's blade glowed crimson once more. It lashed out at the Zombie, executing a Tsuji Kaze and draining the first of the Zombie's health. He had a long way to go before he finished this Zombie off. With any luck, he'd be able to proc his damage over time effects soon, but he wasn't willing to bank on that. The Zombie moved in to attack again, and Koga dodged swiftly to the side. The Zombie, shambling and rotten, practically falling apart, telegraphed its attacks so well, Koga saw it coming from a mile away. Effortless. He just needed to keep it up. Keep it up and deliver the last few finishing blows. The Zombie attempted another attack, and Koga ducked beneath it. It was almost child's play now. This new found sense of clarity made things seem so much clearer. He could see again. And not just because the tears were gone, but his rage no longer clouded his mind. No longer was he blind.
