“Huh?” Rei frowned when he saw a light around the side, breaking off from the group, he ran towards it, just in time to see Takumi clasping a Glow Stone in his hand,

“Rei!” he cried out, relieved as he was turning all over to try and see if anyone was nearby, right behind him as he turned too look, was a giant spider leaping at his exposed back, Rei quickly ran forward, blade behind charging up the Sword Art, with the visibility now in his favour, he quickly slashed down at the creature, creating yet another explosive shockwave as the spider seemed to screech, thrown back into the darkness, crashing into the wall.

Rei lifted his sword back up and readied himself, if they could fight it out here, with Takumi’s Glow Stone light helping him out, the table was slightly more even than before, or so he hoped. Not far behind him, Yuta and Kenji, still close together quickly caught up,

Rei’s eyes darted around at the darkness around of him, wary of an attack,

“Takumi, can you stand?” he asked without looking,

“Y-yeah,” he nodded shakily, standing up to his feet, holding the glow stone aloft,

“Make sure you hold onto that glow stone, we’re in deep [asdas] without it,”

“Are we still going to leave?” Yuta asked to make sure,

“…” Rei was unsure, should they just fight now? “Let’s retreat slowly, and keep an eye out,”

“Yeah, alright,” Yuta nodded,

“What were you guys doing?” Takumi glanced over at him, holding hands with Kenji, hurriedly, Yuta slapped his hand away,

“W-we were trying to find each other in the dark and start feeling out way out,”

“Feeling?”

“Look! It’s not what you think!” Yuta paniked, desperately explaining,

“Right…” Even though he knew what it was, Takumi still stared, happy to mess around and keep his mind away from the problem at hand,

“Come on guys, save your jokes for later, let’s bail,” Rei sighed, he glanced over his shoulder at his friends, a small smile on his face, they were still safe,

Rei walked backwards carefully, being the rear guard as the others guided him out, during that time he had to try and endure the spider’s collective attacks and fight back as best as he could. Under the glow stone’s light, he could tell that there were probably 3 Giant Spiders, and a few spider swarms, it was hard to see if not for the giant spider’s glinting eyes, the swarm was just this black mass that encroached upon the light, it was close to being hard to tell if it was just a shadow or a mass of spiders, but their crawling was like an army and when it unnaturally surged towards them, it was unsettling enough to understand at a base level.

Rei used his Rage Blow, using the shockwave to destroy as many of the little spiders as possible as they backed off slowly, though in exchange, his energy was already in the red, this could be bad.

The giant spider leapt at him, and he once more parried it away, the fangs didn’t touch him, but just the sheer fact they made contact was enough for his Hp to drop, the hit box detection and logic of this game was horrible he sighed.

“We there yet?” he called over his shoulder,

“I think we’re walking in circles,” Yuta worried,

“You serious?”

“I’m not sure…”

“Come on guys, I’m counting on you to get us out of here,”

“we know, we know! It’s just the pressure,”

Rei unleashed a Rage Blow as the giant spider leapt at him again, in hopes that he could cleave through it, but no luck, they used their legs to block it, what the hell were those made of, metal? He cursed inwardly as he saw the sparks fly and the clang of their collision ring out continuously through the cave. He had to rest to recover his energy, but it was rising so damn slowly!

One of the spiders must have been ahead of them, up on the ceiling crawling around a pillar or turn in the cave network, since it jumped from the ceiling and landed right on top of Kenji, pinning him with a loud clang from his armour colliding with the rock, he cried out, quickly flailing around desperately to try and get the spider off him, but it had real strength and weight behind it’s virtual body, truly, it was using it’s several legs to pin down his arms and legs, it’s huge body sat on his back and it’s dripping, bulbous fangs reared up in the air with a screech as it tore into his throat.

The worst part of it is?

That he didn’t die, that he didn’t feel pain, but it felt like a huge spider was kissing his neck, that creepy sensation of the hairy mandibles caressing his neck, the thick, sticky poison slowly dripping down his cheek and the monstrous breathing of the spider right up against his ear.

“Hey!” Rei was about to turn around, but quickly swung out as another giant spider leapt at him from the darkness at the rear of the group, forcing him to focus on his own task of keeping the larger force at bay, he was recovering energy by not attacking, but because he wasn’t attacking, he wasn’t pushing them back either, their pace had to increase but now, Takumi was behind the group, stranded,

“Get off him!” Yuta cried out, running over and front kicking the spider, but it barely budged, along with it’s hp,

Takumi had instantly stopped, stepping closer to help but quickly shuddering when he remembered that they were spiders, even so, that small brief moment where the light came closer allowed them to see the hp of the monsters, they were close to death. They could do this with a few more hits.

As such, Yuta wailed on the spider, ignoring his energy rapidly decreasing and his breath getting heavier.

Rei glanced at the spider grappling with his blade, then back at his energy, he didn’t have enough, nowhere near enough to unless Rage Blow to try and finish the spider off, more over, it was a bit too tanky for him.

But even so, he had to attack now or they would be overrun. With a grunt, he pushed them away, carefully aligning his blade so it wouldn’t bounce off a rock wall and swung down with all his might, a normal attack without an art was all he could afford energy wise right now, luckily, the blade slashed deeply into the spider, cutting through it’s leg and jamming itself stuck in it’s face at a diagonal angle. He used both hands, one on the handle and the other on the blade to forcibly push the blade all the way through, successfully cutting off a chunk of the spider’s squishy head, leaving it’s head din to pieces as the spider itself collapsed onto it’s belly and shatter into pieces, one down.

Next up, he ran forward, “Takumi, give me some light!”

“R-right!” Takumi steeled himself, or rather tensed his whole body to force himself to take that step forward towards the horde made of his greatest fear, he knew full well that Kenji was pinned down, normally far past saving, but Yuta and Rei were rushing in to help, he couldn’t let himself abandon them and if more coldly and realistically speaking, he would be able of very little without them.

Yuta and Rei had their combat and game expertise, without them, he and Kenji were pretty much a fish out of water in this world.

The white light cast forward, illuminating the area, letting Rei raised his blade up over his head confidently and bring it down in a arc at the spider, he had to be careful, avoiding Yuta punching and kicking the spider and Kenji under the spider, he slashed in a graceful diagonal to horizontal arc that cleaved into the spider’s head and bisected it horizontally.

Two down, Rei watched as the glass shattered over Kenji and Yuta who quickly dragged him to his feet and pulled him away,

“T-thank you, thank you so much… thank you…” Kenji repeated, tears from his eyes falling down his face, he had lost his glasses somewhere along the way and he looked like a broken man saved from torment, though considering the idea of being nibbled on by giant spiders, it probably wasn’t too far off, it was entirely possible that all of them had gained arachnophobia by now.

Rei pondered to himself as he began to stomp on the swarms of smaller spiders, ignoring the little pin pricks of bites if grimacing a little as he did it, seeing him, the others quickly did the same, jumping up and down, grinding their heels, etc, smushing all the spiders under them

Now that he thought about it, it was probably a god send that they didn’t bleed for the floor would be littered in squished spiders and spider goo.

They had a moment to breathe even as they continued back,

“Is everyone alright?” Rei asked for confirmation,

“I’m fine, my HP anyway,” Yuta added quickly,

“No! I’m not bloody okay! I want a flamethrower just about right now!” Takumi shouted back,

“I just want out of here…” Kenji cried,

“You and me both, I wish there was magic in this game!” Rei laughed,

“Magic?” Takumi asked confused,

“Rei? I really don’t want fire spiders or poison spitting spiders,” Yuta shot back quickly,

“W-what?” Kenji too was completely lost to their conversation,

“Good point, hate to have to deal with that,” Rei sighed,

“We are definitely getting a shower after this, yeah?” Takumi hoped,

“We’re getting the best equipment we can find and then we’re going to destroy the golems,” Rei stated,

“What? N-no way am I going down here again!” Kenji cried out,

“After we destroy the golems, it’s probably best if we go to sleep and deal with the Sword Fish the next day,” Rei kept going,

“Sword Fish?” Yuta inquired,

“Yeah, apparently out last quest of the chain is fishing,” Rei shrugged as he parried a spider fang and pushed it back,

“Are you serious?” Kenji cried out incredulously,

“He’s not lying,” Takumi confirmed, “The Sword Fight hits for 50 on the first attack as well I think,”

“Again!?” Yuta sighed,

“We haven’t even fought the boss yet and we’re having trouble! We should just give up!” Kenji wailed,

“Look, we’re not giving up, it’s frustrating, yeah, but come on, so long as we pass the hurdles, it only gets better,” Rei pushed on,

“So far, I’ve been beaten into the ground by baby boars and I’ve been destroyed by giant spiders, in what way has that been going better than what we were doing before!?”

“It’s better than wallowing in self pity, despair and all of that crap,”

“I don’t think so!”

“Then why don’t you go and join the kids on the street freezing to death then!?”

“You’re forgetting your reasons for doing things!” Rei grunted as he pushed the spider back and struck it with his blade, cutting deeply, draining the health bar, but not enough, he grimaced as he kicked the spider to give himself some room to manoeuvre his weapon. The small spider swarm were mostly gone, only one giant spider left and it was putting up the last fight for it’s life,

“Weren’t you supposed to be trying to help those kids? Getting stronger, earning money, so that those kids could have a safe haven?”

“I was just being self-righteous okay!? I know that’s what you wanted to say!”

“Both of you calm down…” Yuta tried but was quickly overwritten,

“Yeah, you’re a dumbass nice guy who only does it for attention and pity, you not getting any over here, Kenji!” Rei shouted back, “Live or Die, make your choice! Even if we were being selfish, we can still help those kids, for self-satisfaction or whatever, those kids will still appreciate it,”

Rei saw the next spider coming, instead of using it’s fangs, it was really going all out on using it’s metal pipe like legs to swat at him, causing him to have to parry against two weapons instead of one, even whilst avoiding their bite,

“We can make a different, no, we will make a difference, but we can only help if we get stronger, sure that might mean that fighting spiders is unnecessary, but it’s the meaning behind it, what’s the point of wallowing in fear and hiding away, wasting your life away, stop being lazy! Stop waiting for someone to save you!”

He pushed the spider back, seeing an opening, he lunged forward and bisected the spider horizontally with a slash, causing it to finally shatter. No more enemies left, but they could still hear more coming, Rei grabbed Kenji and dragged him out of the cave, only a few meters away, they were met with blinding rays of light and a huge open view of the clouds, a godly vision after the darkness in the cave,

“We have to act,” Rei stated, “No one will save us but ourselves, but those kids? They don’t know better, we have to move our asses and help them out, they, like we just were, are still wallowing in dark cave with no exit in sight, we can be that exit for them. At least, we can be a area of light.”

As they hauled their asses out of the cave and began to make the long journey back something surprised them when they got to the top, their energy slowly recovering along with their health, as if nothing never happened.

It was like a consolation prize or something but the whole party was mentally exhausted after the spider caves and were reeling from their argument, more than anyone else, Rei was cringing at the things he had just said, it was all contradictory and false after all.

But they were pushed out of their minds when they found the chest, a large, gold and red treasure chest like you would normally find in games. It wasn’t here before…

Taking a peek, they soon found a number of items,

A pitiful amount of Col, a handful of Tier one materials, a rare, unidentified weapon, and two rare unidentified consumables.

The unidentified items were in the shape of some odd glowing cube with a question mark inside it, the cube was animated and would float and spin in their hands.

They were of course extremely curious about it, even sharing a surprised glance at each other devoid of any anger, taking the items, Rei mentally made a note to go visit Ceres shop again, with her info, it might be good to try and bring her some business. Once they had that sorted out, they’d go deal with the equipment problem and then they would go back into the spider caves with a vengeance.

That’s when he realised,

“Crap, we have a timer on the quest,”

“What?” the others looked at him in shock.

“We’re being timed, if we head back, we’ll fail the quest and have to do it all over again.” Rei sighed,

“You mean…. The spiders will respawn?” Yuta grimaced,

“Most likely…” Rei nodded,

“Wait, what?  What are you on about?” Takumi cried out, feeling panic rising in his chest, if he had to deal with that again…

It was obvious what their choices were, they had to push on, their HP and Energy were nearly back at full, glancing at each other, fire in their eyes, they gave a loud mighty roar to rouse their spirits as they charged down the path recklessly, rushing back into the cave. Rei lifted up his arm and held aloft the glow stone to light up their path, they tried to avoid retracing their steps, searching the places they specifically haven’t been to yet.

“I can’t believe we’re back here,” Takumi sighed,

“Yeah, but let’s no wait for the spiders to respawn, yeah?” Rei gave a weary smile,

“I…I… really can’t handle this place much longer,” Kenji breathed heavily, they had just escaped trauma and were now diving right back in, it was of no surprise then how badly this would affect them.

But soon, they came across a large cavern, it was considered large since the light of the glow stone was not able to reach any of the cave walls, as they wandered forward in the truly empty darkness, they came across a strange, stone altar.

On it was a silver cup with 4 green gems inside.

“Is this it?” Takumi wondered, picking up the beautiful gem and looking at its different angles with his fingers, “An emerald of some kind?”

Suddenly, his quest logged update, `Retrieve the Gem` was scored out and a new one came into view,

`Defeat the Guardian,`

“Uh, guys-“ before Takumi could finished, there behind them, a large stone brick golem stopped into the view of the glows stone.

They collectively cursed as the rest nabbed the gems as well and promptly cursed again when now they were dealing with 4 separate Golems.

“This is gonna take a while,” Rei sighed, slumping over exhausted, but his face bore a wide grin,

“W-w-what are we going to do?” Takumi cried out, “I really don’t think a spear’s going to work on it,”

“Just… give it a go!” Rei shouted back, he was about to run towards the Golem when Yuta cried out,

“Drink your potions!”

“Oh, right!” Rei hurriedly summoned the Safeguard Potion, whilst it was unnaturally blue, he downed it, it tasted… like bubblegum, strange but not unpleasant, drinking it as fast as he could until not a drop was left, the glass shattered in his hands into particles of light as his body glowed blue, a ethereal shield appearing in front of him.

Rei rushed forward, emboldened by the fire of battle more than anything, there was nothing he liked more than a fight, his eagerness for battle seemed to spur Yuta on, he couldn’t let his best friend outshine him forever, he was keenly aware he had always been chasing behind Rei, but in this world, where combat skills were put to the test, he wanted to prove himself, he’s always felt a sense of inferiority to him.

He felt inferior to Rei in a lot of ways, he was inferior to Takumi who was far smarter than him, he always chased after the two in school, but here on the field, here a few years later, he wanted to prove himself.

Two sides of the battlefield was lit up with lights, Rei’s blue light crashed like an ocean wave against the golem, rocking them backwards with the explosive force and the grey light flashed twice in rapid succession, leaving two laser like streaks as Yuta jammed his dagger into the Golem’s Achilles heels.

Two sides of the battle were engage in heated combat, leaving Takumi and Kenji staring at their respective opponents,

“Attacks work!” Rei shouted over, “Our weapons can cut through them!”

“Yeah! These guys are easier than the spiders!” Yuta shouted back over in confirmation,

Still, Takumi and Kenji were not exactly enthused, they backed up, ending up colliding with each other. Startled, they shot shocked glances at each other, relaxing when they realised it was an ally, when they looked back forward, the golems were already upon them, swinging their weapons straight at them.

Raising their shields, the attack seemed to ping off harmlessly as the Safeguard potion did it’s job, the ethereal shield pulsed with a explosion of blue light particles, the counter force made a show of nearly toppling the golems, making them stumble back, lives on the line, the pair jumped off the platform and plunged their weapons into the stunned golems, pleasant surprised when despite all realistic explanations, their steel weapons had no trouble cutting into their enemy’s stone composition.

Yuta knew he had a lot of areas where he was much weaker than others, he felt that keenly when Rei helped him deal with bullies back in school, he was made aware of his disparity when he kept failing his tests whilst Takumi kept getting perfect scores, he was nowhere near as talented as the others, but he got where he was with hard work. He studied, hours on end just so he could pass all his exams. He exercised regularly, to keep his body fit so he would be able to at least stand up for himself. At the same time he was self conscious about his appearance.

He glanced at Rei who missed his Sword Art and proceeded to hurried block the next attack from the golem with his blade.

Rei never seemed to care about, even though they’ve been friends for nearly 10 years now, he could never truly read him. On the surface level, he could easily see what he was thinking.
