[PP-08] <<Ferocious Foe>> w/ Baldur

Recommended Posts

Cordelia grunted, briefly nodding her head before she dashed back into the battle, darting left and right before she delivered a Tsuji Kaze on one of the sahagins, her katana extending as she executed the long ranged attack.

"Alright, one more!"

She looked over to Baldur and nodded her head.

All she could really think about at the moment was just the idea of going home and passing out on her bed. She wasn't sure if Oscar had stayed home today. . . maybe she would've know if she had woken him up, but considering how many times he had left and let her sleep, she thought that she should return the favor. . . except now it was way past noon and he had probably wondered where she had gone off to this time.

Darn.

She had lost track of time, and honestly, she thought she would've been home sooner. At least she was gaining something from doing this dungeon with Baldur, though she still felt a small ball of guilt in her stomach.

Now there was one left. The lone Sahuagin didn't stand a chance. Baldur could it right here, and right now, but always lingering in the back of Baldur's mind was the awareness that they were in a dungeon, and nothing was ever what it seemed. The last labyrinth they were had a huge wandering monster problem, and it seemed like they were taking on new opponents constantly. They'd finish one and a new one would wander by.

So Baldur waited a hearbeat for the Sahuagin Bandit to make the first move. It struck at him as the other had always tried, with a simple thrust of its trident at Baldur's mid-section, so the Samurai was ready for the blow. He could feel the width of the weapon now, unlike a sword or an axe. As it came at him, Baldur took a half step backwards, it was all he needed to just barely get out of the weapon's range. It looked almost as if the trident would land, but Baldur was already in the stance for <<San Ge>> letting the pre-motion tug at his limbs until the moment the Sahuagin's animation started to reset and then the gaijin let it loose, and his form blurred with the speed of the system assist, weaving around the monster as he rained blows, ending with a powerful downward slice that cut it in twain from head to toe, shatting it into thousands of polygons that rained down on them.

With a smile and what appeared to be a ritualized motion, Baldur swept the blade to the side, as if it had blood on it he wanted to get off, and then slowly sheathed the blade, ending with him standing almost casually as if nothing had happened.

"Well, that was much more satisfying than the bear. A bit more of a grizzly fight, wouldn't you say?"

He gave Cordelia a wink before heading forward.

"Do you have any kids, Baldur? I feel like you're a natural at this," Cordelia commented, giving him a deadpanned look before following after him.

He must be. Right? He seemed like just a fatherly figure in general. She furrowed her brows. Now she was just curious to know his answer, because damn, he played the part almost too well.

"Anyway, we only have to fight a few more before we can go on with our day, right?" She asked, tilting her head at him as she caught up to his side. It wasn't like she didn't enjoy being around Baldur, well, maybe that was a lie at the moment, but in general! She just wanted to go home and take a nap.

That was weird.

She never really napped a lot, but so much drama had been stirring up recently and she just wanted to simply sleep it off. Probably not the best solution, but it was something at least.

"We should pretty much just have one more. There's usually just some trash and then one semi-harder mob at the end. We'll be able to take it out pretty quickly between the two of us."

Baldur paused as they walked into a new room. It was much larger than the others they had been in, and taking up much of the central area of the chamber was a large, natural looking spring... or it would look natural if there didn't appear to be a lot of bodies, drained of all their moisture, trying to claw their way out of it. It was as if something had pulled them in and drained them while they tried to crawl away. None of them seemed to have completely escaped the pool, human or Sahuagin.

With a great splash, a woman emerged from the pool, wearing rotting clothes, and had seaweed in her hair. She appeared very attractive, and the way she walked was sensual to the extreme, and that was when Baldur suspected what she was. When his eyes focused on... her the name popped up.

<<Rusalka>>

There were a handful of such legends in the world, of women bear-ly wearing any clothes, and luring stupid men to their deaths.

At first, her smile was demure, flirty, and she had a 'come-hither' look, but that was spoiled when suddenly her teeth were revealed to be rows and rows akin to a shark, and when she opened her hands, they had long, claw like fingernails.

"Here we go!"

Baldur and the Rusalka charged at one another at the same time. The samurai only a moment quicker as the monster flung itself at him, trying to latch on with her claws, and bite down on her with a mouth that now gaped large enough to consume his shoulder, but the blinding white and gold light of Baldur's sword exploded forth from the saya as he draw the blade in a single, flowing motion that didn't pause his charge. The blade tore into her neck, flinging her into the ground so hard she bounced off of it, but by then Baldur was already in the <<San Ge>> sword stance, and he became a blurr of blue, orange, and white that flashed around her, cutting red ribbons in her form with the after light of his strikes.

Cordelia's gaze flickered from one spot to another as she looked around the new room. She shuddered. It felt too big.

Her hand slithered down to her sheathed katana almost like a shield as her gray eyes travelled over to the. . . pond. She opened her mouth, only to snap it shut firmly.

The thoughts that were usually scurrying from one place to another in her head seemed to have vanished instantly when she made out the morbid figures that littered the small body of water. It felt. . . strangely serene, like something out of a painting on her family's wall. Accompanied by the lack of sound, the room made her feel at ease.

Strands of her ivory hair fell over her face as she looked down at her feet. "[Doo-doo]," she murmured under her breath, shaking her head violently. What a strange feeling to have at a time like this.

Cordelia stiffened, once again her thoughts scurrying off to their dark corners as the sound of water clashing against water rang out through the air. The player looked up, her mouth almost falling agape as she watched a jaw-dropping lady make her appearance from the pool of water.

Her gaze hardened. All thoughts on the mood of the room suddenly changed to a kill-on-sight mentality.

Taking out Haunted Verdict once again, she dashed forward. . . only to trip on a slight crack barely noticeable to the naked eye.

There goes the serious mood.

Steel glinted in Baldur's eyes as the samurai focused on the monster like the two of them were the only ones in the world. Baldur taught all of his kohai the state of concentration and control he called Mushin. It was something he had learned in real life through sports, but ultimately mastered through years of martial arts practice outside of the game, and it carried into the game as well. In the west, it was often called 'being in the zone' though it wasn't something that was practiced, just something that happened when you were 'on fire' in the good way.

Baldur and the Rusalka circled each other for a moment, but Baldur could almost sense the movements of the AI construct. He didn't watch for twitching claws, or the shuffle of a foot, he felt the presence of his opponent. He was calm, still, giving nothing away as the circled for a moment. Baldur was buying time for Cordelia to get back to her feet, and positioning the creature of Russian myth between the two of them. Baldur had threat, and so exposing its back to Cordelia would hopefully help her land a stronger attack. Her energy gave her enough left for one.

When the Rusalka made a move, Baldur was ready for it, moving to engage at the same time it did. It slashed the air in an X in front of it, and claw marks rend the air towards Baldur but the Samurai dropped down low, ducking under the center of the cross cut, and as he stepped forward to close the distance the stomp of his foot echoed through the room in time with the loud kiai he released, the two reverberating with the power of his strike as he brought his sword art to bear on the Rusalka. The final overhead chop sent the creature flying back several steps towards Cordelia.

"You got this!"

@Cordelia

"I don't got this!" She cried, watching as the mob came hurtling towards her.

The creature came crashing into her, which sent both of them tumbling and tumbling. . . and tumbling until the two eventually broke apart.

The girl scrambled back up her feet. She wasn't aware that she was suddenly playing football with a swamp-lake-looking-lady.

She looked over to Baldur and gave him a nervous smile. "Whoops?" She turned her attention back to the Rusalka, who was just getting back to her feet as well. . . feet? She was pretty sure they were feet anyway.

"I suppose the unlucky bug bit me in the ass today," Cordelia sighed, shaking her head. Seriously, she had been doing so well on the quests before this, barely missing at all, and now look at her! She was letting Baldur do all the work, again. First the bear and now this. . . fish lady? Life just wasn't on her side today, she guessed.

Baldur watched as the Rusalka and Cordelia tumbled down to the floor, cursing himself for launching the monster towards her when Cordelia wasn't ready for such a maneuver. What was going on? She had done so well against the Ki'raion, but it seemed that luck was not with her this time. The samurai did not fault her too much. He had dragged her up to a floor she was not comfortable with, and threw her against foes more challenging than she was used to. He had thrown off her groove, in an effort to push her out of her comfort zone.

Too soon. Baldur mused.

Rushing forward, Baldur interposed himself between Cordelia and the Rusalka, just as the creature bore down on them, raking its huge claws through Baldur's midsection, and then latching it's jaws down on his shoulder.

It had been a long time since Baldur had felt an attack so viscerally. Normally, creatures and damage didn't bother him, he had become desensitized to the attacks because of the lack of pain, but the brutality of this unorthodox attack threw the samurai's normally carefully controlled demnor and he gave out a cry of alarm as his health bar slowly began to plunge past all of the health he had regenerated so far.

Drawing <<Warden's Fury>> back, Baldur drove the blade deep into the chest of the <<Rusalka>>  then put his left hand against the back of the blade and pushed as hard as he could, finally ripping the vice like grip off of his shoulder, which was now only a mess of red lines where the teeth had torn into him. Without removing his blade from the creatures form, Baldur took the stance for <<San Ge>> with his blade still buried inside of her, and suddenly the system assist flug her around like a rag doll as Baldur executed the form.

If she could snap her katana in half, she would.

Seriously.

What the [no-no word]. She. . .  she just wanted to face plant into the ground, and possibly cry. Actually, she will cry. That might not look very good in front of Baldur she opted for the other choice;

Throw her katana on the ground and give it the double birdie. "Why do you loathe me, Haunted Verdict?" She whispered, giving it the birdie one last time before she looked over to Baldur.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She squeaked, bowing to him repeatedly. "I don't know why I'm so off today, because like I have been really off today as I'm sure you could tell--" she inhaled, "and I'm not usually like this I swear, and I used to get so lucky with my holy when I first got this weapon and now it literally went to [censored]. . ." she trailed off, seeing that she probably used up all the frekin' air in her damn lungs.

Baldur did not spare a glance for Cordelia's outburst. His steel eyes stayed level with with the Rasulka. She was turning out to be a more elusive target than he was used to. Somehow she had a mystical aura that kept usually accurate Cordelia at bay and prevented the young woman from activating her swords power.

"Stay focused. We've almost got her."

Baldur was slowly backing the mythical creature towards the wall where her movements could be more controlled and limited. When she suddenly lunged forward Baldur was almost caught off guard mid step, but he was able to duck under her grasping arm and unleash his <<San Ge.>>

The force of the blow threw her form into the wall and staggered her for a moment.

"You've got this!"

"R-right!" She exclaimed, activating her own San Ge as she closed the distance between her and Rusalka.

And thank God she didn't miss. She was pretty sure she would've drowned herself in that gross pool if she did. That wasn't a joke.

Her feet skid away from the mob as she gave one last look at its healthbar. "Oh, so close," she muttered, turning her head to Baldur. "One last attack from you should be able to do it!" Cordelia called out, readjusting her grip on her katana as she gave him a sheepish smile.

Thank, god. That should be able to do that it, but damn, that was labor intensive. She wasn't sure if she had event went a boss like this before. It was weird.

Most quest bosses she had went up against we're two twice weaker, but she supposed that was because of Baldur and his stats, which wasn't exactly a bad thing, of course.

Baldur watched as Cordelia finally managed to hit. The poor girl must be so emBEARassed to have done the BEAR minimum on this quest. He had meant to take her along on this dungeon so she could fight more and contribute more after Baldur had one shot the quest mob with his own BEAR hands.

But the fight wasn't over yet. Cord had dealt a grizzly blow, but the Rasulka got her BEARings quickly and charged at Baldur BEARfooted and furious.

"Don't worry Cord, I have BEARly enough energy left to kill her. Your blow was just enough, now I'm going to BEARy her!"

Turning back to the Rasulka with a smirk, Baldur moved beary quickly, and activated <<San Ge>>. The last sight she would see.

"Whew. We BEARly made it through that. But we'll done Cordelia-chan. I feel like we went through this quest and dungeon so fast we broke the sound BEARier."
