There was once a dim Shadow that wept as it crept

Who snuck up on Bahr in his bed as he slept.

He heard it's sad cry and awoke, quite perplexed

By the figure before him, deranged and unkempt.

The sound it emitted, "You must accept,"

Pointing its finger, laughing for effect.

"You're a joke - a loser - a failure - inept."

With its jagged teeth bared, stained from neglect.

But its visage did have a strange sparkle and shine,

No doubt from the object that housed its design.

A mirror in the dark, completely benign.

The Shadow, in truth, is a reflection of mine.

He resigned with a sigh and gathered his Swine,

Stood up from his bed and twisted his spine,

Let out a strained grunt before leaving the shrine

Of the solitude, darkness, and dread he'd defined.

The light from his "garden," however dim,

Felt bright, piercing, unnerving to him,

Due to the foul state that he found himself in.

A miasma of pain tearing limb from limb.

His journey brought him to the twenty-second floor,

Where the light from the sun agitated him more.

Permeated his frame, right down to the core,

And continued to raze him on his way to the shore.

"Do something, anything," his mind would implore.

One more thing for the Shadow to ignore.

It had taken his heart, placed it in a drawer.

Sealed off from the world, with no room to explore.

He cast his line to the murky depths,

The lure sank, bait sealed to its death.

And just as the worm would draw its last breath

It was swallowed whole by a fish, in its belly it kept

One, two, three tugs on the line

The rod would bow, but he hadn't the time

To worry about whether it could realign.

He pulled and he pulled, and his frame would recline.

And wouldn't you know it?

The fish was quite fine.

It was easy, simple, and repetitive.

Certainly, rarely a negative.

It didn't even need to be competitive.

It was like giving the Shadow a sedative.

As you see, Bahr had become quite sensitive

To the woes of this world; he regretted it.

The decision to enter, representative

Of the folly of man - contemplative.

What would it be like to live like back then?

Swords, monsters, and powers in exchange for a pen.

Sign away your life, put on a helmet, and when

It feels like too much, just hit "Log Out" again.

With the button erased, a quandary arose.

One that would fuel the worries and woes

Of those trapped within. Captives, I suppose.

To deal with the fate, with the world they had chose.

One more cast into the pool.

Another bite from a ghastly ghoul.

Reeled it in, with a temperament cool

And feasted his eyes on his efforts' jewel.

Nothing more than a surrogate; a distraction.

A break from all of the grief and abstraction.

To better himself, he hadn't the traction.

So instead he healed in pieces - fractions.

He simply hadn't the motivation for action.

The Shadow smirked with satisfaction.

Its hold on him, its wicked contraption.

It dulled the senses, input and reaction.

Every action Bahr took became a transaction.

Trade energy and enjoyment for misery.

Every instance of pleasure now trickery.

The slope he slid down increasingly slippery

Until he burned and spun like rotisserie.

"My depression is just so severe

That it's honestly amazing I'm still here.

Everything has disappeared, except the Shadow in the mirror.

And the message is crystal clear."

I'm living my life in fear.

A small speech meant for no one,

But it put the gears in motion.

A begrudging admission to the strange notion

That this feeling was one of twisted devotion.

He had the power to end it in his palms.

An opportunity that lay between stressors and calms.

The evil that lay in inaction to qualms.

A blast of truth; an explosion, a bomb.

But still, the Shadow held him down

And he hadn't thought ahead to keep his friends around.

People in his life that wore the companionship crown.

All forms of contact, support, he had drowned.

All he had was himself, and his Shadow, now.

It felt like swimming in epoxy.

Head above, but waves were getting choppy.

All he needed was camaraderie,

But he felt as brittle as ancient pottery.

So, instead, he cast his line.

Waited alone, biding his time.

His arms tensed, his body reclined,

Holding on to hope that things would align.

It was foolish, misguided, and futile, he knew.

He knew that with Lessa, he was not one, but two.

But still, he was still, even with the debut

Of their hope, their purpose, their love that grew.

Everything since then would cement and imbue

The sense within Bahr, “All I should need is you.”

And when it wasn’t it made him feel ill.

Both because he could not, but expected to heal.

It wasn’t her responsibility to rebuild

What was left of him before he went and got himself killed.

Twenty six times he had flown around the Sun.

Twenty five of those, he’d felt absolutely numb.

Emotions through a lense of rage, fierce but dumb.

Increasingly wobbly Jenga tower, pressed down beneath his thumb.

Ready to give any second, stability low.

One more loss, one more fight, one more strike, one more blow.

Bullet wound against his heart, watch the orchid grow.

Push creativity out, never force it though.

“Something must be broken in my brain.

I can’t seem to cope anymore with all of this pain.

People probably think that I’m insane.

All the negativity is just a link in the chain.”

Of suffering, self entrapment, guilt and strife.

Things out of his control held him under a knife.

He felt like he had no control over his life.

Could he even keep up long enough to make that woman his wife?

He knew he had a responsibility in this.

But things beyond his grasp pushed him toward the abyss.

Where the edges of sleep and death kiss.

He let himself stand, isolated and remiss.

Life is the space between what we can control, and can’t.

“Play it right, you still lose,” its cardinal chant.

The Shadow its avatar; a crooked implant.

Produced from the self, reality with a slant.

It was his own point of view that he’d need to recant.

A vow to himself that he’d need to make.

He had to do it, too much at stake.

But the Shadow was elusive, shifty; a snake.

It wasn’t so easy a thing he could shake.

The thing was that every day when he’d wake

It would bind and constrict and subdue the intake

Of the things that he needed to see through the opaque

And sever the link past the veil, and break

Through the screen of his self-inflicted sink

Of ineptitude, unease, torment, the brink.

Break the chain, all it takes is one link

And the rest would fall, shackles broken in sync.

Despite knowing how, he couldn’t dispel the veil.

The heartache and toil and trouble a jail.

His own, manufactured while frail

Too weak to break free, efforts made to no avail.

Every day the cage swelled and grew in scale

Until all he could see was the space it would entail

An endless void, stretched with each inhale

Until the exit was unknown, a Holy Grail.

So he stayed in one place, memorized every detail,

And waited as though the exit would sail

To him on his island, perhaps guided by snail.

An attack on himself, an unyielding assail.

As the end would not come unless it was sought.

Things improving on their own was just nice thought.

But unrealistic, optimistic, simplistic

And he’d tied himself into a knot.

His air running out, adrift, direction lost.

A cosmonaut barreling through space, the cost

Of passiveness, static, inaction, frost.

He’d not realized the line he had crossed.

He had to turn back, undo the damage done.

But to which direction should he run?

From where had he come? Where had he begun?

And yet, alas, he could ask no one.

Then he saw something that caused him to frown.

A repulsive creature - no, more of a clown

Emerged from the lake, wearing water in the shape of a crown.

And here Bahr was hoping that it would just drown.

What was it supposed to be?

Certainly, it couldn't be the king of the sea?

No, that wouldn't make sense. For you see,

This is a lake, not the sea, do we agree?

Besides, it was a joke. Tiny and wee.

Hardly any larger than the size of a pea.

Likely, he could swat it away like a flea

He would kill it quick and return to fishing, that was his decree.

He drew Dawn's Demise and gave it a flick

And the poor monster's health bar plummeted in a tick.

One more hit like that and it would sink like a brick

Back into the depths with no issue, quick slick.

It did its best to retaliate, fight back

But it simply did not have any bite it its attack.

Ironic, considering it attacked with its fangs.

But where Bahr had expected pain, there was no pang.

Despite the damage it took, it hung by a thread.

Really, Bahr just wanted to put the issue to bed.

He could have walked away, moved on, but instead?

He flung his sword forward and severed its head.

The worst part was, it held no good loot.

That was insult to injury, disappointment to boot.

This interruption and delayed him from finding the root

Of the quandary that plagued him, cake it in soot.

From the beginning, he'd start over.

And look at this as just a layover.

He couldn't allow his frustration be a spillover

In the turbulence of this attempted makeover

He had questions that he needed answers to.

Some self reflection that was long overdue.

So he grabbed his rod, moved it back, then forward too.

He had time for another bite or two.

It was true, too, that time sure flew

When one stood still and let their whirling thoughts stew.

Fishing was somewhat of a custom brew

Of patience, discipline, sunlight, and deep blue.

So again and again he flicked the pole.

Casting his line as he bore his soul

To himself, his Shadow, his pet, the bowl

Of water before him, shine-worthy extol.

He’d really had no idea the toll

That waiting and waiting and not having a goal

Could inflict upon him, turn heart into coal.

His soul on vacation, an endless stroll

Through the knoll of grass in an endless field.

Shadows and dark clouds and rain it would yield.

Himself and his stillness his only shield.

Without braving the storm, he could keep the pain sealed.

But yield, it would not.

And end, it would not.

Take a break, it would not.

Improve, it would not.

Without input, no stop.

It was up to him to come out on top.

One step forward, even a hop

Could get his feet wet and join the ranks of Aesop.

Tell the stories of his putrid struggle,

The good and the bad

To one who might need to juggle

The same very same quandaries he’d had.

It was up to him, and him alone.

To unearth the root, to pick the bone.

To heal, repair, repent and atone.

And soften his heart, which had hardened to stone.

If not, he’d continue to be a dull drone.

Shambling about, the occasional groan.

He hadn’t anticipated how the Shadow had grown.

But his path had been lit, and its consequences shown.

He had to focus on the things he could control

To claw his way right back out of the hole

That he’d dug and he’d dug and he’d dug like a mole.

Then, finally, he could make once again himself whole.

Control was an anchor, it kept him from drifting.

A gift to himself, and a gift worth gifting.

He owed himself an outlook more uplifting

Than standing idle, aside from occasional shifting.

Life is nowhere close to spectator sport.

For the spectator, the Shadow is life’s cruel retort.

To vanquish it, one would need the unconditional support

Of their friends, themself, and their base, a fort.

But how would he start? What could he do?

What came first in the self improvement queue?

A dilemma of its own, for certain that was true.

Make the wrong move, and setbacks would ensue.

Which was a troublesome thought, one he let stew.

For a setback or two could serve as the screw.

To secure the coffin, a screw in lieu

Of the typical nail - harder to undo.

But without taking the risk, he could never renew.

It circled back to fear, which continued to accrue.

Improvement or circling the drain, a choice that you

Or your family or neighbor wouldn’t fancy to chew.

In the meantime, simple fishing would do.

Where exactly to start, he hadn’t a clue.

But with enough time to think, perhaps he could skew

The entangled lines of confusion to true.

The truth, a beacon, a hope, a statue.

Somewhere between what was right and was taboo.

Unmoving, strong, undeniably just.

The truth, as it turns out, was what you could trust.

Trust in the truth, and only yourself.

Everything else could remain on the shelf.

You are the only person you can truly know

Despite the seeds of trust in your friends that you sow.

What goes on in their head; their mental metro

Has a custom rhythm, its own tempo.

And there isn’t a way to be totally sure

That what goes on in there is totally pure.

Every thought that they have could be tinted with humor.

Or perhaps more professional, reserved and mature.

The one way that one can fully ensure

Total trust in another would be to infiltrate the contours.

The wrinkles that line and detail their brain.

The thoughts and proclivities that fill that plain.

In the case of depression, they go against the grain

And they scrape and they scrape until you circle the drain.

But doing so to one of your friends

Is surely impossible, you can only notice the trends.

If taken of guard, give yourself a cleanse

And allow yourself time as your own brain mends.

Perhaps that was the beginning, a hopeful start.

Improve his own brain and change his outlook - smart.

If he would correct the runways of his mind he could chart

A course from the brain all the way to his heart.

Many might think that the two exist apart,

But that’s not quite true, as the brain can outsmart

What the heart says is true, when it decides to impart

The “wisdom” of the Shadow; restart into dark.

Staying the course is what would be key

To fleeing to freedom, returning to glee.

Good things in threes and mob slaying sprees

And that lovable idiot from the Big Lebowski - Donny.

“You’re out of your element.”

A quote to behold

When you’re old and there’s mold in a mould on your soul

And your soul takes a roll down the hill to the knoll

And becomes unwhole from the lack of the joy the Shadow stole.

With careful consideration, the brain can patrol

And unroll the soul that rolled to the knoll

And unravel the mould of mold that took hold

And return it to its original state of old.

Pulled between two directions, one hope and one dread

And one false step could result in him dead.

If he wanted the right outcome, he would need to tread

The fine line between what’s said and unsaid.

He’d need to say the things that need said

And leave unsaid what needed unsaid

And hope, in the end, that it all led

To an outcome where blood remained unbled.

But he felt optimistic, for once he had hope

That he, too, could live such simple a trope.

The happy ending, one that was clean as soap

With everything wrapped up in a nice envelope.

Where the Shadow and Joy would run off and elope

The same, but different, each an isotope

Of a greater system of balance, one with the scope

To make life navigation less a walk across tightrope.

Both are needed, this much certain.

Joy’s jubilance and optimism and positivity to insert in

The Shadow’s self reflection, skepticism, and curtain.

You’d swear it’s something you’d see from Tim Burton.

The whole thing felt uncertain, eerie, strange.

The idea that he could possibly arrange

A deranged estrangement of midrange change

A merge of ideas from both sides of the range.

To deny his Shadow would be to deny himself.

A blow to the wellbeing of his mental health.

To do so would surely diminish the wealth

Of his spirit and mind, relegate one or the other to stealth.

And despite the plans his brain had defined

His muscles took no heed, seemingly blind.

He had a strategy, an outlook refined.

So why did he not act on what he’d outlined?

He continued to fish, lure in, lure out.

A craft that he’d now perfected, devout.

Despite his optimism, still, there was doubt

That he could spur the seeds he had sown to sprout.

What was the rush? He had the time.

No need to run in with no reason or rhyme.

If he dared to commit the crime

Of screwing this up, he’d shift the paradigm.

Further and further into the dark.

Really, the possibility was stark.

That he might, despite his efforts, fall to the shark.

The Shadow, the lark, the narc, any other nickname that may fit in the ballpark.

This time, from the murky depths, it arose.

Those who have fished will know how it goes.

A creature all black, with no face - not even a nose.

Its title, "Doubt," was what it had chose.

Bahr had already been through the highs and the lows

Of dealing with such creatures, he was one of the pros.

And he knew he could handle it, from its head to its toes

Even when limited to a writing format like prose.

He dashed in, Dawn's Demise held in his grip

And carved into the creature without so much as a quip.

He was startled when its health dipped no more than a chip

And it retaliated in kind with an unusual weapon - a whip.

It flashed into existence, and then in a clip

It cracked upon flesh, threatening to strip

What HP Bahr had, right down to the tip

Or the edge of whatever separated his life chord from its snip.

Could this shadow of Doubt set sail to his ship?

In the midst of his shock, Doubt readied again.

The whip shot forth, missed its mark, and then

Bahr dashed forward with a roar, taking ten

Long strides to his target, casting aside his zen.

It was not a monster to be trifled with.

One like this was the fourth, maybe the fifth

Such creature he had ever seen, those of lore and myth.

It served as a barrier to progress, a dark monolith.

Dawn's Demise cut deep into its spine.

Theatrics and effects blazed, complete with a shine.

It was fortunate that in the morning he'd procured his Swine

Else he would be for from what's considered to be fine.

Doubt absorbed the blow without so much as a whine

And tilted its featureless head toward Bahr, a sign

That it recognized his power, and saw the line

Between itself and him, it was really divine.

Bahr stepped back and prepared, there was much to be done

For every two hits he dealt, it need only deal one

A rival to its power, it knew none

Other than a proc of Fallen, that's how this would be won.

How grueling, how droll, how slow going, this.

Fighting this monster was the antithesis

Of what he was here for, relaxation and bliss.

To waste his time fighting, he'd surely be remiss.

But short of using powers of kinesis

There wasn't much more he could do to dismiss

The silent creature before him, not so much as a hiss

That escaped its lips, or lack thereof. Though he still felt the kiss

Of its whip as it sailed through the air once more

With ferocity that felt fit for war.

Though it missed, Bahr felt it in his core

That the monster was out for bloodshed and gore.

Another part of him felt it was a chore

To repeatedly cut it during their fight on the shore.

This was it. Could he not do any more more

Than let his life be led by violence galore?

When this battle was won, to himself he swore

That he would do better, because he had begun to abhor

The violence that plagued his life and tainted his core

And through his inner light that it tore.
