"—Two extra espresso shots on the usual drink, please."

Early morning. She'd gone down to find that the lights were already on. It always looked a little cold outside at this time, Arabelle observed, but the fire burning in the hearth and the earthen colors of the interior seemed to encase her in such a comfortable warmth that she sometimes felt as if she were in her own little world — one that was far-removed from the scene outside. 

"You aren't fond of bitter things," Mishiro remarked.

She turned from the window and met her dull gray eyes. Ever impassive, ever unreadable to her closest friend, the girl behind the bar resumed her routine morning preparations after she had made her remark. 

"And I am still not."

Arabelle thought she reminded Mishiro of something; a smile had nearly broken through the expression the other always held in delicate balance. Crossing her legs, she sliced down on the fluffy pancake the girl had made for her and she took to curiously watching Mishiro roast her coffee.

"I see. Is there any particular reason you're up this early?"

"What other reason can I have when I'm this close to my wonderful Shiro-chan? I'm keeping you company."

"I hardly consider sitting in my cafe at 3 AM and demanding extra caffeine as 'company.'"

"You have to be a bit lonely at this hour, I believe."

"And you appear as though you need more sleep. Unless you have something pressing to deal with, I'd recommend returning to your guest room. There isn't anything too interesting for you here that you can't see in the morning." 

"She's really trying to chase me away..." Arabelle mumbled to no one in particular. She propped an elbow on her table, playing with the rest of her pancake. "Shiro-chan, what do you do when you can't sleep?"

"I count sheep."

She said, in such a flat and monotonous tone that Arabelle almost thought she was being serious.

"Pffftt. That came out of nowhere!"

"Is that so? I just thought I should take this conversation with the same amount of seriousness as you do." Soft steps pattered against the hardwood floor as Mishiro rounded the bar and approached her windowside table. "Your coffee." She carefully set down a steaming hot mug along with three white packets in front of her. "Three espresso shots, and extra sugar packets. All on the house."

"Thank you!" Arabelle said gratefully. "I really needed a good drink to go down with these... consumables."

"Consumables?"

She made a wave of her hand and before the other player's eyes, an uncoordinated assortment of items appeared on the table: a beef jerky, a lemon-flavored treat, and three hotdogs... of questionable flavor combinations.

"I see," Mishiro said monotonously. "Enjoy your meal."

Arabelle was struggling to maintain her perfect composure by the last hotdog, and the very thought that she would have to do this two more times for the buff was almost enough to kill her motivation entirely. She wanted to follow Mishiro's suggestion and sleep. Perhaps the entire day would do, but the girl had a suspicion hotdogs would start haunting her dreams too.

"You look pale," a concerned Mishiro observed from behind the bar. She rested an arm on the counter's wooden surface, momentarily turning her eyes away from a half-finished craft. "Are you sure you're feeling well enough to leave?" 

She smiled and waved a hand dismissively. "I'm doing lovely, thank you very much."

"The... absurd amount of buffs you forced down earlier speaks louder than any of your reassurances." She caught the other girl staring at the empty plate and mug, and the discarded wrappers on the table, unable to mask the disbelief seeping through the cracks in her perfect expression. "I thought you would surrender halfway through."

"But I didn't." Arabelle pulled herself up, sliding the chair under the table. "Like the previous two instances. So I'm leaving to take full advantage of these buffs!"

No convincing her. The barista got the memo. She turned back to her work, lacking the inclination to push any further. "Buy smaller meals. Not only are they faster to consume, they also do wonders for preserving your appetite." Again, gray eyes flicked back in her direction. "I am a little concerned for your combat performance in this state. Is there anything else I can do to help you now?"

The small purple-haired girl smiled coyly and strolled over to the bar, tucking her hands behind her back and feigning a maidenly embarrassment. "Perhaps a—"

All possible emotion melted from Mishiro's face.

"No."

And the rejection hurt even more than these silly bunnies' attacks! Arabelle pouted lightly at the memory of earlier and tore one off, then slammed her knee on a nearby tree, forcing the other attacking mob to let go. She found her balance, checking her enemies' HP bars in turn (all halved) as she flourished her weapon in preparation for a second attack. Internally, she still grumbled. 

Ice Queen indeed...

She liked to think that this first group of Easter Bunnies faced the worst of her unspoken frustrations — that they would be instantly obliterated as the scythe wielder vented it all out on a blind killing spree. But in reality, adrenaline or any other sort of similar things caused the precision gained from a calm and collected state to drop.

Amaterasu ignited, a rising pillar of flame that even seemed to dwarf its user. Arabelle guided it on a path that ideally would have blasted through the rest of these trash mobs' HP bar, but she moved a moment too soon and the farthest bunny evaded a killing blow. It kicked her with its hind legs before it scampered off in the direction of the opposite side of the [Garden], terrified, and she waved away the black flames crackling at the edge of her vision, auto-looted the three dead mobs, and was on the fleeing bunny's heels in hot pursuit.

Arabelle wasn't going to have a repeat of last time. With the mob's HP resting at the halfway point, the small purple-haired girl charged up her scythe with her strongest AoE sword art even if she was only aiming at one target. A little wasteful, she knew, but she had no choice but to regenerate all of her energy out of combat either way. Arabelle ran, tailing the fluffy mob as it tried to find a burrow to jump into, and sped up into a sweeping attack as soon as it was in range.

Her blade passed clean through and sliced its body in half. She gave a showy twirl as her momentum slowed, then she came to a stop amid shimmering bits of chocolate eggs and loot. The girl picked it up, frowning as she checked its stats on a window. What was it with her and looting nothing but these unidentified rare trinkets and armor?

Well, the first round of mobs gave a rather disappointing haul, but Arabelle wasn't going to let those hotdogs go to waste now. As soon as the game registered her in an out of combat state, she was going around and looking about the [Garden] for materials and chocolate eggs to gather. Preferably both. Dematerializing her scythe with a casual wave of her hand, she moved to another part of the area and spotted a yellow glow emanating from a conspicuous-looking crate near the edge of the orchard. Farming materials left behind by an NPC, perhaps?

She didn't give it much more thought; it was free materials! Nearing the crate, the girl slid off the rest of the lid and coughed at the amount of dust the movement kicked up. Ew. Bad idea. But curiosity took ahold of her and she peeked in anyway, and found glowing bolts of cloth amid farming tools she couldn't name. Arabelle reached in and pulled up the first one, dusted it off as she covered her nose, then did the same for the second. Beneath the materials were three completely out-of-place treats.

It wasn't like the three kids were picky. If they hadn't been limited by the event mechanics, Arabelle was sure they would have devoured anything with at least an overdose of sugar. She shuddered, a little squeamish at the thought of them happily munching on eggs she looted from bunny corpses and dug up from the ground.

Speaking of. There was still a yellow glow in front of her. The small purple-haired girl had completely circled the crate, looking at each of its sides, and even peered back into its contents to no avail. She didn't immediately chalk it up to a glitch; [Detection] may not show yellow material glows if one's rank was too low, but it had never falsely highlighted an area in her vision. Arabelle gripped the edges of the wood and shifting her entire weight into it, she pushed the heavy crate forward to reveal chocolate eggs and a few precious stones buried underneath.

The amount she'd collected from under the crate was a little more than her previous and Arabelle felt a little proud of herself for finding the hidden bundle of goodies. She pushed harder and slid the large crate further onward to reveal the hole in the ground it had concealed underneath. Empty for now, but she kept it easily accessible in case the festive event materials were to respawn within the duration of her stay.

What a silly childish thing to be proud of, but everything about this event was a little childish. The small purple-haired girl sure had to hold back a snicker when she witnessed the most intimidating orange cursors, frontliners, running about the fields on a quaint little egg hunt. With her energy now back to full, she tossed one last glance at the crate and the hole and went a little further in search for more.

Four fluffy white bunnies in her sights. ...Well, more than four. Arabelle had walked straight into an undisturbed portion of the [Garden] and there were even more than yesterday's numbers. They were positively cramming up the place, sniffing about every plant in the vicinity, their movement scripts causing them to bump into each other and get into little squabbles as they went on their incessant search for Easter eggs.

She walked forward and slammed the blunt end of her scythe on the ground. Most of them startled and in a chaos of thumping paws, precious chocolate eggs dropping and shattering, and little squeaks of fright, the bunnies all ran for their burrows. Not all of them would reach their destination, however. Before the collective retreat started, Arabelle had ignited her blade with a [Sword Art] and cleaved through the mass, allowing random targeting to choose her unlucky opponents for this round.

Too caught off-guard due to their attempted retreat, the Easter Bunnies caught in her first [Sword Art] couldn't even fight back before she came back in with a second. Arabelle sliced neatly through three of the creatures who were still on the ground and twirled her scythe behind her to deliver a crushing blow to the one that was bunching up its little legs to attack her. A satisfying snap, and it perished — marking the cleanest run she ever had since the start of the Easter event.

"Hehe~."

She couldn't help but be a little smug over her total victor over four ~~helpless~~ mobs at her loot minimum. Though she knew she was simply at the perfect level for farming with minimal buffs, a large part of it could be attributed to skill too! Arabelle looked down and found the loot reserved for her in yellow spots on the ground. Eager to see her rewards, she picked up each one of them in turn.

Fifteen chocolate eggs, the usual amount of col, and an abundance of materials and unidentifieds. Walking away from the spot where the bunnies had died, she found and gathered more.

Arabelle was seeing a bright future for her shop, and as for her favorite merchant, she was going to have a field day with all of this. Though, thinking back, An's expression after she brought the second batch of loot in for identifications... didn't she look a little hassled? An had that tendency, but the merchant girl had also been grateful for the opportunity to gain more EXP. That was the downside to merchants: while they had the ability to bring forth equipment with enhancements far out of reach from any ordinary crafter, they relied on others to level up and players often chose merchants who were at maximum rank already. Who wouldn't? They had better chances for uniques, and that was all everyone wanted out of unidentifieds these days.

Now that she thought about it, it almost sounded as if she were doing An some sort of charity. That wasn't wrong. And it wasn't the only way she helped the girl who fondly addressed her 'Senpai.' Was it out of pity? Was it for her own convenience? Amusement? She won't tell. But there was a small pleasure she derived from seeing the amateur merchant's face light uo whenever she entered the messy little shop, either with business or just to talk... Like seeing Arabelle was just enough to make her day somehow. Her simple mood was infectious sometimes. 

From the level one player Mishiro brought into the Halloween circus tent, unaware of what was to come, to the clumsy and overly sensitive but determined merchant slowly but surely climbing up the ranks and growing her own loyal customer base... it really was an odd series of events that led her to this. It kind of felt like fate, she thought as she stumbled over a cluster of materials and Easter eggs.

Quiet. That was the only way she could describe the clearing once populated by an overly large amount of Easter Bunnies. Apparently, they hid themselves within their burrows at the sight of combat now — and she wouldn't blame them for running. It was a natural instinct replicated by Aincrad's programming. They fell so easily at the tip of her blade, after all. Her mind wandered back once again to the unnaturally large number she saw earlier, but she dismissed the thought when she realized what the fleeing creatures left in their wake.

Eggs. A lot of them. It made sense: they gathered the festive event item for whatever reason, had lots of them stored... in their paws and somewhere in their fluffy pelts, and she rembered seeing them drop everything they were doing when they ran earlier. The sweets were beginning to fade though and as Arabelle rushed to pick one up before its durability completely dropped, it solidified and registered as a gathered item in her inventory.

Now she wondered how she was supposed to kill them. Perhaps she shouldn't have scared them all off into hiding earlier, but that was inevitable no matter how she looked at it. With SAO's advanced enemy behavior, skittish mobs like these would probably run and hide as soon as they saw some of their friends fleeing, and there was no way Arabelle was going to completely isolate a group of four mobs with their earlier numbers. She lingered around the area for a moment, aimless. Should she move to a different [Garden]?

Oh, easy solution, here it comes! Perhaps long enough had already passed; a brave group of four bunnies ventured out of their hiding places. Checking if it was safe, maybe? Well, unfortunately for them, it wasn't. She was more than ready to attack. Twirling around Amaterasu with a triumphant smirk, she halved three rabbit's HP bars in one [Sword Art].

Okay, maaaybe they were prepared too.

In the course of her attack, one had leaped back once — but it remained close enough that she instinctively overextended herself to reach it — then suddenly kicked off the ground a second time, completely evading her first [Sword Art]. Meanwhile, the other three bunnies had been quick to surround her, and they threw themselves forward to attack her in unison. Arabelle evaded one, but couldn't do much about the rest.

Had these creatures actually gone out with the full intention of fighting her? Arabelle couldn't see any more reason for their preparedness, and she had to giggle at the thought. She was really posing that much danger to them, huh? The girl spun around, sending both attacking mobs back into range, and she charged up another [Sword Art]. She cut through all four, making extra sure to hit the one that had doged earlier, and three exploded into clouds of data.

HP bar... less than half. Fallen had activated to boost her damage output and now her scythe was still emanating a darker energy. No need for the AoE then; it was as flashy as she liked her [Sword Arts] to be but it was a bit strenuous and it wasn't like there was anyone watching. Arabelle let out her breath in a huff and twisted around her scythe once again — where previously, she had been holding it in front of her for defense, she was now swinging around it to close the distance between her and her enemy and pulling her weapon with her as soon was in position, twirling it in her hands to line up for an attack, she burst through the last of the mob's remaining HP.

She came to a stop looking down at the col and materials it had left behind. After all that work, the last bunny didn't even have Easter eggs with it.

Arabelle grumbled. She wasn't the sort to throw petty fits and stomp around, but her usually light steps did come down a little heavier as she traipsed about the [Garden] in search of something to pick up. One glimmering performer crystal and three chocolate eggs later, she was still a little miffed. She wanted to fight again! To go after another group of four because the last one, while they had dealt way more damage than she would have liked and appeared strong enough for better loot drops, had been extremely disappointing and ultimately not as worth the effort she put in. But— energy.

She tired of the constant cycle of having to wait for a certain amount of time before fighting again after just one round of mobs — not the act of fighting itself. Odd, right? But through the years, she had just gotten used to it. Fighting was a part of her daily life and she came to love it as much as she did her hobby of playing the piano.

Perhaps she should invest in [Energist]. It granted an expanded energy pool, which, when paired with two slots of [Recovery], would certainly increase the duration with which she could fire off [Sword Arts] in battle. But it wasn't like [Energist] and [Recovery] were particularly impressive for her tier... she'd only seen the bonuses as minimal at best and the latter enhancement relied on, once again, a chance. 

Arabelle tilted her head and frowned slightly at a plant whose leaves were marked with the yellow of an objective. It looked unremarkable. Was this even more than a random weed? Finding that there were two of them she could gather, she gently pulled each one up from their roots anyway and both registered as a gathered material in her inventory. Whatever. Someone could identify it for her later. Walking a little ways off, she picked up another chocolate egg she found on the ground.

Alright, let's go for another! Perhaps the last gathering she would do for this day. The buff was beginning to wear off, and she didn't want to waste any more time looking at plants she didn't even know. Every second spent with these buffs had to be worth it! And after that... another round of downing two hotdogs in one meal to refresh her buffs. Oh lord. Arabelle was glad she'd gone through her inventory with Claude last night and found another way for her to farm without forcing consumables down her throat.

Her T1 weapon, her ACC trinket, An's LD trinket, and then a mitigation buff to make up for the defense she lost. She would need to craft a healing song to replace her [Regen] tonight, but that wasn't too much to ask for. Her thoughts mostly centered on her plans, she returned to the crate from earlier and found that the bolts of cloth had respawned along with a fair share of chocolate eggs.

Whatever underground congregation the Easter Bunnies had in those tunnels had apparenrly decided to send out their best fighters in convenient groups of four to deal with the threat wandering the chocolate-egg-rich fields outside. For her part, Arabelle was more than happy to play the role of the prowling Big Bad Wolf. What delicious treats you have~. Upon spotting her latest victims, Amaterasu reappeared in her hands and she prepped it for a [Sword Art].

She landed herself right within their range, bringing her scythe for a horizontal slice, twirling around with the help of her momentum, and reengaging with another wide swing. All bunnies caught, she flicked her blade up to rotate it in the air and slam it down with a thundering force. As she flipped over her scythe to pull it back up, the action naturally made her vulnerable to all four fluffy bunnies' attacks.

Well, except for one of them. 

That one kind of faceplanted on its own.

She landed back on the ground, kicking up dust as she skidded to a stop, and quickly found her balance. With all Easter Bunnies at half HP bars, Arabelle was confident to unleash [Explode Catapult] once again as they all came charging, teeth and claws bared, towards their death. She cut through their fragile figures, splitting their game-generated models in halves which visibly burst into pixels not long after as their single mob instance was marked by the System as [DEAD].

...Except for one. Again.

The poor creature had attempted to follow along the others but somehow got trampled upon. Arabelle was no expert on animal behavior but the gesture looked intentional for some reason — like a sort of scolding at its pathetic attempt of an attack. The lone surviving Easter Bunny had been the only one to miss previously... and ironically, its own failure led up to it avoiding death.
