"New quest line, huh?" Bahr mused as he reviewed the quest contents. "How come nobody told me?"

Bahr was fashionably behind the times, as usual. A new quest line had been added awhile ago, and he'd failed to notice. Deep down, he knew that it was nobody's fault but his own - but muttering blame to some unknown entity under his breath seemed like the easier way of coping with it.

"Guess I'll try the bear first," he declared as he dismissed the window and set off into the woods of the eighth floor. It seemed like an easy enough mob, and a decent one to get his feet wet with after taking such a long hiatus from questing. There was no reason to suspect he'd run into any trouble with it, despite his rustiness. He only hoped that he'd have the rust shaken off by the time he started getting to the more challenging mobs in the quest line.

Turns out Bahr had gained a fair bit of luck during his hiatus, because he found the bear immediately. It stood tall, towering over him, bellowing animalistic utterances the likes of which are impossible to describe through mere text alone. Its very presence caused the air to quiver, and its roar caused the snowy hair atop Bahr's head to dance. Despite its intimidated stature, Bahr looked upon his prey with utter disinterest. This wasn't a creature that actually stood a threat.

Dawn's Demise was sheathed almost as quickly as it had been rendered from it, casting a single line through the monster through which obsidian energy bubbled up before exploding. Two pieces of the creature fell from one another, and shortly thereafter dispersed into clouds of polygonal azure mist. Bahr could have said something edgy, like, "That was disappointing," but it had honestly been about what he was expecting. Instead, he simply turned around and walked away.

FLOOR 24

Without much left to do with his day, Bahr figured that heading to one of the higher floors to grind for a bit would be a good allocation of his time. So long as he were patient and didn't allow his more violent tendencies to get the better of him, it would be an efficient way to pass the time and get some loot out of the whole ordeal.

It didn't take him long to make his way up to the twenty fourth floor. It also didn't take long to find himself within a dank cave. Nor did it take long to locate some mobs. Weird, humanoid fish things. Fish Wannabes? What a fitting name.

He jumped into the lot of them and spun his blade about in a wide circular arc, the crimson energy in his blade imbued with sparks of gold and tendrils of black. One mob managed to avoid the display, though the others weren't so lucky.

Before they'd had time to react, Bahr had another Sword Art charged up. This time the gold dominated the black, and tore through two of the Fish Wannabes with holy righteousness, abolishing one of the pair. The final mob that was struck took the brunt of the smoky tendrils that leapt from Dawn's Demise and clung to its body. And the final mob? Well, it avoided damage. For a second time in a row. What are the odds? Low, probably.

While Bahr mulled over the probability of actually missing his targets, he failed to make one of them miss. It sprang forward and scratched him with its... fins... that were on its arms. It cackled at the Crimson Marauder through is grotesque gills, taunting him for being unable to avoid the attack. Did it expect that he should dodge every single attack thrown his way? What did that mean it thought of itself? Nothing more than cannon fodder?

Fitting.

Another attack, and two more of the creatures were felled. But, curiously, a third remained. And yet again, it had come away unscathed. Rather than be annoyed by the timid creature, who had yet to so much as take a swipe at Bahr, the Crimson Marauder was amused. He rose Dawn's Demise to his shoulder and let it rest, assuming a relaxed stance as he looked the humanoid fish from head to toe.

"You remind me of something," he quipped nonchalantly, narrowing his eyes as he tried to recall exactly what it reminded him of.

"Grrglerrt Khhawawah," it gurgled in response. It was trying to talk. How cute.

"Zora," Bahr concluded. "You remind me of the Zora from Legend of Zelda. Just a lot more... what's the word I'm looking for?"

"Gretsksk!"

"Yeah, grotesque. That's it. Thank you."

That was enough. Time to stop talking to the fish, and start killing it.

But when he leapt forward, it dodged his attack with such nimble grace that it actually spurred Bahr to wonder whether he'd been fighting the mob at all. When he looked about, his eye caught it again - a good ten feet away from where it had been only a moment before. Was Bahr starting to lose his edge? Or was this mob just that good? It should have been virtually indistinguishable from its brethren in every aspect. Yet, he'd failed to deal any damage to the damn thing.

Cool it, Bahr. It's just a fish.

No use getting too worked up over it. As long as he kept the pressure on, there was no way it could resist him for long. A couple good hits and it would be gone, just like the rest of them. That was the hope, anyways. Bahr had struggled with hitting mobs ever since his first outing beyond the walls of the Town of Beginnings. There was always a lot about fighting in Aincrad that felt left up to chance.

There it was. A hit. Finally. And a good one, too. Smoky obsidian tendrils that crept along the blade leapt forth and into the creature, sapping away a ridiculous quantity of its health. Another hit like that and the fish would be toast for good. Then he could move on to other ventures.

There hadn't been anything particularly tantalizing about the loot he'd received from these mobs thus far. Bahr was hoping that this particularly elusive monster would provide something with a little more value. It was a stretch, but the possibility always existed. If it didn't give him anything worthwhile, he'd need to consider finding a different hunting ground. He wasn't going to subject himself to annoying combat for the sake of some measly col and mats. What else had he gotten so far. A trinket? It simply wasn't worth it.

When he killed this thing, then he would know whether or not it was worth sticking around.

He brought his sword down on the gilled freak before it could move, and shaved off of the rest of the HP in its health bar. Moments later is was a pile of azure polygonal ash, and the loo screen populated.

Total garbage. Again.

That had been a lof of effort for a lackluster quantity of col and a few mats. It was time to move on to a different hunting ground and try his hand at different mobs. If 'Fish Wannabes' weren't going to give up worthwhile spoils, perhaps whatever lurked deeper in the cave would provide something of interest. If not, perhaps he'd chosen the wrong cave altogether.

So he set off, deeper into the bowels of the rocky corridor. Glowing crystalline formations lined the walls, lighting the way. He couldn't yet see what lingered up ahead, but it was only a matter of time before he found it illuminated.

As he made his way deeper into the cave, he found his mind trailing. He wondered what everyone else was up to while he was spelunking into the abyss, chasing treasures that may or may not have been there. Had any of them fought a bear earlier in the day? Or were they holed up in their homes? Shops, perhaps? Crafting away?

What was Lessa doing? Where was Oscar? What was Oliver up to? They were invasive thoughts, but not all too unpleasant. He'd done a better job of being sociable lately, so being out on his own almost seemed strange in its own way. Not long ago, the opposite would have been true. He'd almost exclusively set out alone, because he felt that it was better that way. Socialized very little. Things had changed as he'd grown stronger.

It wasn't a bad thing. It was just surreal. He'd never anticipated that this would be his reality.

Perhaps it wasn't much of a surprise. Before, he'd gone about things in a more solitary manner because he'd had poor experiences with his former party. They'd been positive in the beginning, but as they progressed through the levels and tiers, they slowly became tainted with negativity. Bahr, too, was guilty of this. They strayed from one another, eventually fought, and now none of them even knew the others anymore. Hell, one was dead. The other had gone missing at the same time.

Sometimes he wondered about them, too.

But he tried not to. At least, not too much. He got angry when he thought about it. And if he fought while he was angry, there was a chance he would go off the deep end. No, that was his very inclination. It wasn't a chance. It may as well have been a guarantee. Fighting while he was angry was never a safe bet.

So he did his best to keep his head cool as he peered into the darkness ahead. Eventually, his eye caught a glint. No, four of them. Four monsters that almost appeared to sparkle in the dim light. Upon closer inspection, Bahr realized that he was looking at a collection of goblins. Not exactly what he was expecting. Even more curious was their skin - or lack thereof. They were adorned in scales, much like you'd find on the hide of a fish. They were otherwise indistinguishable from the goblins of the lower floors.

They seemed rare. Tantalizing. Bahr needed to slay them.

So he prepared a Sword Art and leapt forward, swinging the slab of metal viciously into the pack. But the attack only found its mark against two of the goblins. The other two evaded him as though they'd known he was coming the whole time. Bahr suffered no counterattack yet, but his blunder had him wondering whether or not he truly was beginning to lose his bite.

The goblins were surrounding him now, brandishing their mighty clubs, their eyes little more than red gleams in a cavern that seemed increasingly dim. Was the light from the crystals temporary? There was a chance that Bahr had gotten himself into a far worse predicament than he'd originally imagined.

He swung his blade. Hit three. They retaliated.

He didn't even have a chance to check the loot he got from the goblin he had slain. He found himself the subject of three harrowing bashes, one right after the other, filling his HUD with red. Were these mobs more dangerous than the last he'd come across? Was it the environment? Or was Bahr truly starting to lose it? Had he grown soft?

He needed to act quick. This would go south really quickly if he didn't bring things back to his advantage. They'd already taken about a quarter of his health.

Block the club. Kick the goblin away. Dodge the other club. Elbow check the bridge of the goblin's nose. Charge. Attack.

Success.

The blade tore through the lot with practiced ferocity, dispelling one permanently while the remaining two were reduced to a thread of remaining health. He'd managed to avoid taking this time, but for how long could he keep this up? The cave appeared to be becoming more and more dim by the minute, and it wouldn't be long before he needed to rely on senses other than sight to survive. Why hadn't he picked up Night Vision? It would have been perfect for something like this.

Whatever. He just needed to slay them before it got too dark to see. Then hope he didn't run into anything on his way out of the cave. Just one more attack, if successful, would put him in the clear and free.

Just as he'd suspected, one more attack did it. The goblins were felled, and he gazed upon his loot. Which was total garbage, just like the wave of Fish Wannabes he'd fought before. This entire cave was a crapshoot.

Alright. Time to get out.

The walls weren't literally closing in, but it sure felt like it. And the minerals that lined the walls were beginning to lose their luminescence. How many other players had fallen victim to this trap? A cave that lures you in before snuffing out all light and leaving you helpless against the mobs that inhabit it. The higher floors truly weren't messing around.

He couldn't even see the light at the end of the tunnel yet. He'd gone deep, and it was a long road back. He prayed he'd make it before all light was gone. If he couldn't make it before then, there was no telling what sort of hell he would have to endure.

He saw something up ahead. A succession of glints. They looked familiar. Were they...? It couldn't be.

It was. An ambush.

More Scaled Goblins had filed in between him and the exit, blocking his path. As the lights continued to dim, he noticed for the first time that their eyes were glowing. They would be able to see once all light receded from the cave, while Bahr would be left helpless.

It was obvious that these little trolls were far more coordinated than the goblins that Bahr had encountered on the lower floors, as made evident not only by the ambush they had set up, but by the way they attacked. Once again, three thick clubs found their way against Bahr's flesh, pounding the life force out of him. He fought back - weakly - only striking two of them.

How the hell had he gotten himself into this mess?

He wasn't ready when they came in for their next assault. He was barely able to maneuver around their clubs. In fact, he wasn't capable to avoiding all of them. One of the crude weapons met its mark right against his forehead, leaving a crimson gridded imprint of the location of impact.

Bahr retaliated with a crude attack of his own, only managing to strike two of the goons while the others made it away unscathed. He panted with exhaustion, peering into the darkness that lay beyond their ugly forms. He could swear he saw a dull, white glow on the far end. Was that the exit? He didn't know for sure.

Not like he could escape right now if he wanted to, anyways. The goblins had done a fantastic job of controlling the exchange, and still stood between him and the only way out. Were he to make a break for it, they would catch him. And after only a few good thwacks from each of them, he'd be toast.

It was getting darker. He needed to get the hell out of there. This next attack would decide everything.

He just needed to focus.

...

And then it happened.

The single most ferocious attack that had ever sprung forth from Bahr's palm. The perfect intermixing of gold, obsidian, and crimson. Equal parts of every flavor, exploding forth in the single deadliest wave of raw damage Aincrad had ever seen. Two of the goblins died. The other two hung on by the slimmest thread of health imaginable. The force of the energy lurched ahead with such unrivaled fury that it left permanent scars along the walls, forever a reminder of what happened here. Like a bell, the very structure of the floating castle rung a deep toll. Kingdom had come.

These goblins had seen the face of their god. And in its wake, they wept. There was no longer any hope for them.

He had the momentum, and the light was on its last legs. This was his chance to end things before they turned south permanently.

Bahr had always found Tempest to be a strange Sword Art. His sword would typically begin crackling with electric energy, which was unique among the Sword Arts Bahr had seen used. But now that he'd put Holy on his blade, the electricity seemed dozens of times more intense. It filled the cave with light, so that Bahr could see again and make sure his attack hit its mark. He leapt forward, planted the pommel of the weapon between the eyes of one of the goblins with a mighty roar, and the explosion of power to erupted forth afterward ran from the point of impact and into the furthest reaches of the cave. Whatever had been there was now dead.

Now nothing stood before Bahr and his freedom.

As Bahr made his way toward the exit of the cave, he reviewed his spoils for the day.

What an abysmal cave. Truly, the worst hunting experience he'd ever had. Not only had he legitimately feared for his life in the first time in recent memory, but he hadn't gotten anything of value out of it. Rare trinkets? A consumable? The trip hadn't been worth it whatsoever. He'd have been better served quitting while he was ahead, after killing the bear. Then he'd have never been forced to endure such a terrible cave.

Hunting on the twenty fourth floor? Not again any time soon. It wasn't a matter of pride. It wasn't even a matter of self preservation. He just simply didn't deserve to go through hell for nothing. There was no apparent value in it. When was he going to use a trinket? The only ones he'd ever wear were the Eagle's Eye and the Neutron Star Enamel Pin that Lessa had given him for Christmas.

Finally, he was out. Just in time to watch the sunset. Was the luminescence of the crystals in the cave timed with the rise and set of the sun? Who knows? It wasn't like he'd be back any time soon to explore the possibility.

He was exhausted. He avoided any mobs that lurked on the surface as he made his way back to town, doing his best not to end up in another skirmish that may drain out the rest of his energy and leave him half dead. For nothing. He just needed to make sure he kept reminding himself of that. He'd almost gotten himself into serious trouble, without a teleportation crystal or health restoration items, for measly trinkets.

Never again.

He made his way to town. To the teleportation plaza. Announced his destination. Wound up on the tenth floor. And then, he began the long trudge to his estate.

The Banshee better hope it didn't make a peep that night. He'd force feed it so much damage it'd delay its respawns.
