Shield gave a brief nod as Beat blew the first two of the demonic beings into data. "Nice," he said, turning his attention to the others, who were continuing to prod around him for openings, unperturbed by the nearly fatal beatings they had thus far received. The nearest of them bounded forward like a dog, rearing up and slashing Shield across the chest. Its health dipped the slightest bit leaving only a sliver of health. He sighed. "I miss my thorns."

Grudgingly, he slapped the other in the face with his shield and swung his sword, tossing a ball of energy to his companion. "Just get this over with. This is too painful." He turned his back on the remaining two, no longer concerned with their antics. "While you're cleaning them up... I'm trying to think what other creatures we might run into... There are some giants, the names of which elude me for the moment. There are generic zombies... not much of a threat... What else? There are some pretty potent magic users... some pretty gargantuan eldritch beings... What am I forgetting?" He racked his brain. There were definitely key creatures he was forgetting about, but he couldn't recall what.

With only two very weakened creatures left, Beat felt like setting his kill up just a bit. He snatched the yellow ball of energy out of the air, watching his energy bar go up as he charged towards one of reeling Bone thieves giving it a swift kick to the jaw, sending it hurtling towards its companion. The two creatures collided and crashed to the ground as Beat followed up, now directly next to them.

"Good night moon." He said as he carved the familiar pale yellow arc in front of himself, the ring cutting into the creatures before it had even expanded. He looked to Shield as he held the swordart against the bone thieves, "This was an old console game? Sounds trippy as hell." His gaze retuned to his victims with a smirk, "Bye." He released the swordart, the energy slowly cutting through each creature, turning them both into data.

Action: Searching for Chest - ID# 158828 results: Loot: 12+11=23 [Chest found]

[H:] Beat | HP: 1225/1225 | EN: 55/120 | MIT: 3 | DMG 26 | Absolute ACC: 7 | EVA: 0 | BH: 24 | Conc (0/3) | QChange (2/3)

With the first combat of the dungeon under their belts, Shield sheathed his sword and adjusted his earring. "Not that we didn't already end up with a decent haul, but it certainly couldn't hurt to have a sweep of the area to make sure there isn't more to be had." He wove back and forth across the path, keeping his eyes moving and his attention focused on any change, either from noticing telltale signs of hidden loot or the even more obvious light from his trinket.

He did not have to wait long for either. As he advanced, a shape loomed in the distance on his right. It was a great statue of an unnatural being, its body was broad but thin, like a flat worm, while its upper body consisted of a head that was a gaping set of toothy mandibles to replace what would be a normal mouth. Its two arms resembled great lobster claws, from the outside, though one was open revealing yet more teeth and what looked to be a hidden mouth contained within.

"Well, if there was any doubt what game this dungeon borrowed inspiration from, here's our smoking gun proof," he said, drawing near only to have his earring begin to shine in the dark. "And I should have guessed from the color of the bonethieves. This is one of The Ancients... see, the meta-narrative of Eternal Darkness is that all of the actions you take are small moves on a larger set of chess boards. This," he continued, pointing to the stone horror that towered over them, "is one of the beings making the moves. I believe this one is called Chattur'gha [chuh-TUR-guh]. His servants are more physically resilient and powerful than the other deities, but, fortunately, there is no additional effects to their basic attacks. No sanity loss or drains on mana like the others." He paced around the base, and sure enough, under the fluke of its flat tail, there was a stone chest whose lid was lined with jagged teeth.

Swapping Watchful Sentry [+3 LD] for Noxious Pendant and using it.

Noxious Pendant [T3]: Paralytic Immunity / Effect: Use to imbue an equipped weapon with +1 Envenom(O) and +1 Blight. (Effect ends if trinket is removed. Post action required if used in combat. Imbued stats cannot exceed normal caps.) [ID#: 109704]

Beat glanced at his energy bar, noting that it would likely be a good idea to to rest as he went though the ever growing list of loot they had built up so far. With only one fight in the dungeon down, they were looking at considerably more loot before they were finished. He slowly followed Shield and examined the giant statue as the tank described what he assumed was lore from the game, "Hmm well, I can see why. I take it sanity was a resource just like health points?" he said, somewhat genuinely interested as he leaned against the statue, watch Shield look around.

"Ooo nice find!" He said excitedly as Shield found another treasure chest, "This is going to be a very lucrative trip I think!" He slid down the leg of the giant statue and scanned the room with his eyes, enjoying the small rest, "What did you use mana for in this game? Obviously magic, but I could see this sort of game maybe being like hack and slash." As he spoke, he opened his menu again and swapped back to his noxious pendant, giving it a tap to restore its potent effect on his weapon, the blade of his spear turning multiple shades of sickly purple and green before returning to normal.

"Very much so, it was," Shield confirmed, kneeling down beside the chest. He took out his ring of keys and began sorting through them. "If you ran out of sanity entirely, anything that lost you more would then cut into your health, and you ran the risk of hallucinating when you entered rooms if it wasn't well managed. The three main deities had a sort of rock-paper-scissors mechanic, where the 'health' creatures and god had advantage over the 'sanity' ones who had advantage over the 'mana' ones, who then in turn had power over the 'health' ones again. If your main opponent was Xel'lotath, you could expect to be constantly low on sanity if you didn't actively recover it, and any time you entered a room, you could count on it being upside down with you walking on the ceiling or having your head fall of and start quoting Shakespeare."

He held out the key that he decided on and held it to the lock. It clicked open, and the chest let out an unearthly wail as it opened. "Not a bad haul. Some decent armor at the very least." He closed the display for the chest's items and stood up to his full height. "In any case, you did have spells, but it was a little atypical and unique. You discovered spells by arranging runes on a spell circle, and eventually you could find codexes for each rune to tell you what it meant. Eventually, you start to see that the spells you cast are actually constructing rudimentary sentences that invoke the name of the deity whose power you are using. For example, the 'Magickal Attack' spell targeting health was spoken - once translated, mind you - as 'Chattur'gha, attack area.' It sounds more complicated than it is, but basically, it's a big game of magical rock-paper-scissors where your scissors are the size of a small moon and can drive an entire civilization mad."

Energy Recovery: 2/2 [Energy restores to full!]
Quick Change: Recharged

Beat giggled as he imagined how something like that would work in a setting like Sword Art Online, "Can you imagine a game like that now? In VR? I think it would have to come with a safety warning of some kind." He shivered as his imagination got a little closer than he wanted to painting a realistic picture in his mind, "I wonder if they could even allow people to play without toning it down. That seems to cross the realm of distorting reality to the point that your brain changes."

I wonder what we'll be like once we get out of here. It will certainly be an adjustment for sure.

Beat continue to listen intently, barely acknowledging the report on what Shield had found in the chest, recognizing some of the elements Shield described from things he had heard of before. "So, is this sort of like or related to the Cthulu mythos?" He stood up slowly, giving his energy bar a glance as it reached maximum once again, "Cuz that stuff is trippy like this Eternal Darkness thing sounds to be."

"Well, now that's the million dollar question," Shield said, lifting his hand palm up as though holding the question lightly in his hand. "They never outright say it, but the game seems to borrow heavily from the aesthetic and themes of H.P. Lovecraft. The game even opens with a quote from Edgar Allen Poe, who, depending on who you ask, was either an inspiration or a rival to Lovecraft." He glanced over at Beat. "So yes, it's very likely they are related, and extremely coincidental if they are not."

As they walked and talked, Shield was not paying attention to his footfalls, a childlike sense of wonderment having stumbled upon a chance to experience a beloved game in a new and exciting way. After a particularly heavy footfall, he heart a series of trilling chirps from the shadows to their left. He recognized the sound instantly. "No... don't tell me they have-" The darkness lit up as a small creature the size of a terrier began to pulsate with an eerie red glow and sent out shock waves of red light in pulses. They washed over the players and the room vanished from view.

Chattur'gha Trapper

They appeared on a platform of stone, and around them on all sides, there was a drifting sea of mist that rolled around to fill the void that extended seemingly endlessly below them. Like little islands, other nearby islands stood stoic and still in the misty ocean. "Trappers... They don't harm you, but man do they get in the way. Should have expected something like this." Out in the darkness in the direction of the other platforms, there came an echoing roar. "...and that would be a Horror. That's what those giants are called... They have a ranged lightning attack, so we need to close the distance fast." He charged up a ball of red light and tossed it to Beat. "Go find them, tiger. I'm sure there will be more than one. We'll likely need to go through them to find the teleporter out."

Beat knew a moderate  amount of Lovecraft lore, so he was paying more attention to Shield's words than his surroundings, by the time he recognized the sound of the trapper, they were being bathed in red light, "Ahh what the hell!?" His eyes quickly readjusted to the new environment they were in, flinching at the roar of the horrors Shield described, "Nasty little buggers," He started as he snatched the red orb out of the air, "I suppose if you don't conisder whisking us away into an alternate dimentions with monsters in it harm, I guess they do no harm."

Now to follow those roars.

Given their size, the horrors were not hard to track down and Beat needed only to leap across several platforms before finally reaching a much larger platform where four giant, three headed monstrosities stood, glaring at him, "oooh you're so mean! Come get some!" His charge skill activated, making him a red streak as he appeared in between them instantly, releasing his signature area of effect swordart, "Weeping Moon!"

The attack cut into each of the giants, though their sheer mass prevented them from being pushed back more than the couple of steps they took backwards in surprise. Beat's Pendant shimmered again and one of the horrors took a knee as it's health bar turned a sickly purple, it's health beginning to drain away.

Shield stayed on Beat's heels, keeping close pace behind him. He was easily the heavier of the two players, so he was careful to let Beat test out footing before he sprung to the next spot. As the field opened up slightly around Beat, Shield aimed his voice over his head right at the Horrors. "YOU CREEPS SPENT TOO MUCH TIME PICKING ON SCHOLARS AND ARCHITECTS! LET'S SEE HOW YOU HANDLE BATTLE-HARDENED WARRIORS!"

He landed behind Beat and raised his shield high overhead, sheltering the two of them from the hail of over-sized fists that rained down on them. Most of the attacks skipped off of the shield harmlessly despite the shock. One though caught an edge and turned the shield, leaving two attacks unguarded. They winged Shield slightly, but he did not stumble, letting his legs absorb the blow to stay upright. "They're certainly something to behold in person. And I thought they were intimidating in blocky CGI," he said with a slight smirk. "Too bad for them we're not the ones who should be worried."

Beat grinned as he charged another sword art into his spear, "Oh yeah, sucks for them." He said, sarcasm dripping from his words, "Heads up!" Beat leaped out from under the cover of his partner's shield and spun, releasing the pale yellow wave of energy that caught each of the creatures in the midsection while passing harmlessly through Shield. The creatures were forced to end their assault on Beat's partner, being pushed back by the attack until it finally dissipated, roaring in defiance as they began to walk back towards their prey.

"They take a hit well, I have to say." Beat remarked, noting the health of the three that had not been subjected to his DOTs. "Well, one more like that should do it." Beat said, with a layer of boredom in his voice, "What else can we expect to see in this place? Any guess as to what a final boss could look like?"

It wouldn't increase the rate at which he could chain them, and he knew as such, but it was tiresome to sit and wait as it took its sweet time. With a few forceful swings, he managed to urge the light to gather more quickly, launching the orb out to watch it circle back towards Beat.

A little practice and I bet I can get that down to one swing...

The horrors were back, not discouraged by the beatings they had received thus far. Their fists lifted high into the air, and Shield had his defenses up ready for another barrage. This time, only one attack snuck through, catching him, across the shoulder. Again, his legs bowed but did not buckle.

"There are a number of options," he mused in response to Beat's question. "The Horrors were the low-level tough fights, but as your magic expanded and the game progressed, they began throwing tougher enemies at you, as you would expect. Next up the totem pole was either the Guardian or the Gatekeeper. The former for Chattur'gha was more or less a mass of legs and claws vaguely resembling a crab or scorpion but with a potent collection of spells at its disposal, and the latter being a creature with a bare skull for a head, leathery looking wings that are tough as iron but it drape like a cape around its shoulders when folded, and a scorpion-like bladed tail. There was also a vampire, which looked nothing like Edward or Dracula. It was inhuman and bent, more like the dog monsters from Ghostbusters than anything truly bipedal.

"As far as an actual boss... That would be the Black Guardian. Each god had one. Chattur'gha's was much like a miniature version of himself, with two large mouths that functioned as toothy claws at the end of each arm and a head that was little more than a sightless mouth itself."

With each of the Horrors within kill range, particularly the one that was limping considerably worse thanks to catching one of the previous waves particularly badly, Beat simply sauntered between them, halting their assault as they glared down at him. His spear shimmered as he considered Shield's reply, "hmm, so lots of teeth, mouths and legs. This game was weird, but creative I guess."

"Alright boys," He started with a grin while reeling his now fully charged spear back, "It's been fun, but I have a guardian gatekeepers guy to kill...I guess..." He unleashed his attack in a nearly instantaneous full turn, the pale yellow wave expanding and catching each of the horrors in the midsection and passing through them. A couple of them staggered forward momentarily before falling in twain just before shattering, but two of them were obliterated upon contact with the wave, shattering into pixels as it travelled.

With the last of the horrors defeated, they could finally focus on getting out of the trapper dimension. Although the fog obscured distant floating islands, there were only so many to see in the first place. It was only a hop, skip and a jump to the exit. "This was much more time consuming to navigate in the console version. You had to time the changing colors of different teleporters to get to this island before." On the ground before them was a simple glowing circle casting a faint cylinder of light upward and a small stream of motes of light drifting upwards. "Then again, there also wasn't a jump button. It was a puzzle horror hack-n-slash, not a platformer, after all." This that, Shield stepped into the circle and was gone.

He arrived back in the dungeon proper, though unlike in Eternal Darkness, they were not brought back to where they had left from. They were in a cathedral. Stained glass windows rose up on either side of them, though there were no pews. It was just plain, black and white tile stretching across the ground, framed on either side by high stone walls with flying buttresses and stone forms typical of gothic architecture.

"I know this cathedral. And I think I misjudged what we'd be fighting and when." Ahead of them, there stood a stone gateway back into the depths of the cathedral, but before they had a chance to make for it, the ground between the players and the exit erupted, and a great being emerged from the hole, now wreathed in stone and tile debris, whose head was split in three like the petals of a flower bud. It opened its many jaw flaps, each lined with teeth, and let out a guttural rumble. Around them, three separate seven-pointed summoning circles appeared, surrounded by glowing red runes, and a growling voice overtook the air, chanting out the spell that brought into being three bat-winged creatures with scythe-like bladed tails hooked up over their heads.

Shield quickly slashed his blade, forcing an orb of red light from its tip before the maelstrom began. It collided with Beat, boosting his damage once again. "This may not seem like much in SAO, but in Eternal Darkness, this encounter would be a suicide mission every time!"

As they teleported to the cathedral Beat's memories of Dark Souls suddenly came back to him, "You know, this reminds me a little bit of Dark Souls." He leaped away from the creature that burst through the floor and eyed each creature as he reflexively charged his spear. Realizing he was on the back foot, Beat dug his foot into the tile and kicked forward, his red charge skill propelling him forward.

"If you're so eager, let's see what you've got!"

With and twist in the air, Beat unleashed his pale yellow sword art, the ring of energy flying out at blistering speed, knocking two of the spider-like creatures down and catching the third gatekeeper in the midsection and driving it into the Guardian, both creatures suffering the full effects of his weapon. Beat grinned at the two off color health bars that were slowly draining, "Nice! That should shorten this fight considerably."

Shield looked up in wonder at the split-mouthed guardian. "This fight was always intimidating to begin with, but man, just having this thing looming over us sets the hairs on the back of my neck on end." Behind him, he saw the gatekeepers turn their eyes towards Beat, a red hatred emanating from the empty sockets of their skulls. "Oh, we're not gonna stand for that."

He leaped back into the center of the cathedral, taking a long, deep breath and puffing out his chest. "HEY, YOU CREEPS! WHY DON'T YOU PICK ON SOMEONE WHO KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT YOUR ILK!" Red beams of light swiveled, aiming now at Shield. The tall, lumbering creatures made their way towards the tank, their tails pulling back to strike. As they convened on Shield, their wings unfurled, enshrouding him on three sides. Two foot long blades sped towards Shield, clashing with his armor and cutting into his arms and shoulders. Behind him, Shield sensed one of the great claws of the guardian lifting over his head. This was the attack he was worried about. He held his shield overhead, bracing it against his forearms as the claw came crashing down onto him. His knees gave under the weight, but they did not give out altogether. He stood there, knees bent, straining against the force as he sheltered himself from the blow.

"Little help?" he managed to squeak out.

Beat watched as Shield strained against the weight of the Black Guardian's claw. The damage was inconsequential, but it was still impressive to see monsters that could inflict any sort of real damage on the sturdy tank. Beat ran forward and torqued his body as he leaped into the air and wiped his spear across the whole group, a pale, yellow wave flying forward and crashing into them.

"Get off of him!"

The guardian roared in pain as he lifted his claw off of Shield, while the Gatekeepers were blown back a few feet before regaining their balance and shouting in an unknown language at the spear wielding glass cannon. Beat grinned at them and gave them the finger in response to their taunts, "Don't worry, you'll be done soon enough." He was surprised to see the monsters acknowledging him directly, but it was clear that it was more for flavor and suspense rather than an actual game function.

Shield felt the relief immediately, kneeling and rolling to the side to get away from the heat for a moment. Once free, he came up to his feet, swinging his sword in one motion and sending another red orb Beat's direction. "Here's a big thank you from me to you, little guy!" he called out, turning to face the guardian once again. "These things get nastier every time I fight them. That's what happens when dungeon difficulty scales off of level, but level gain has diminishing returns." He puffed out his cheeks, bracing himself for the next volleys. "Guess there will come a point someday when I won't be able to tank without backup."

The gatekeepers lumbered once again, marching around him as though pacing to an internal funeral dirge. The guardian mean while was pulling back a claw, brandishing it once again as almost a club which he swung horizontal to the ground to attempt to sweep the tank off his feet. The scythe-like tails of the gatekeepers came one after another, their shrouds lifting and spreading like great steel wings, hopping out of the way just as the big bad was about to connect. Like the last blow, Shield held his ground, bracing his shield ad the impact rang through his body. Unlike the last blow, there was not a crushing weight continuing to press down on him. "Last attack was better," he grunted, thumbing his nose and glowering at the unholy spawn that towered over them.

Beat eyed Shield's health pool as the demonic creatures coordinated their assault against him. It was true that between Lilith and his battle healing, here weren't a lot of creature that actually posed a meaningful threat to one of the toughest players in the game. Still, given what they had managed to do, Beat wondered how true Shield's assessment really was. Sure, it would take a while, but even these damage numbers surely had some potential. The younger player ran to Shield's side before charging his attack as one of the creatures leaped in to attack once again.

"Oh no you don't!"

Beat jumped into the air and spun, once again releasing his signature area of effect sword art. The ring of energy expanded, catching the leaping one hard in the face, knocking it on its back along with a healthy collection of DOTs. The others suffered the usual damage, but it was good that Beat now had three creatures suffering his critical effects.

"You know...there might be something to a dot build..." He said out loud.

"In all honesty, you're probably in a better position than every other player in Aincrad to build one," he said, pointing at Beat's pendant. "That little beauty right there lets you dedicate two whole item slots to DoTs. Nobody else can manage that. The only options they have to increase are the same ones available to you as well, such as Toxic Venom and such," he said.

The guardian and a few of the gatekeepers were getting restless. Shield knew that look. When attention began to shift off of himself, he could instinctively feel the energy of the battlefield changing. "Hold that thought," he said, holding up a finger. He turned and marched up into the big bad's face, or rather its mouth since the other features that might adorn a proper face were missing. He squared his shoulders and expanded his chest, inflating them to their full capacity. "EXCUSE ME, UGLY, BUT YOUR JOB ISN'T FINISHED! WHAT'S THE MATTER? CAN'T HANDLE THE TASK OF PUTTING DOWN THE BIG ONE, SO YOU GIVE UP?"

Eyes and mouths snapped their attention to Shield, the former glowing red and boring their light into Shield's face. At once, they struck. The maw of one of the guardian's claws opened and clamped its teeth down on Shield, holding him in place while the ads struck with their tail blades, screeching and snarling with hatred at his challenge.

"Okay, two more and the small fry should be done. I can focus down the big guy afterwards." He said as he analyzed their health bars, making educated guesses that he felt were pretty accurate given his experience.

"Let's end this!" He shouted as he charged forward, his ring of lunar might shimmering within his weapon, waiting to be unleashed. He leaped into the air and spun once, drawing a circle around himself with his spear, the pent up energy following the blade of his weapon. The ring hummed and sat in place for a moment before expanding outward, catching all of the creatures hard, destroying one and adding his critical effects to the remaining two Gatekeepers.

Beat landed and grinned as he watched the two gatekeepers' health bars drain. He turned a malicious gaze towards the Black Guardian, "Looks like my time table has moved up. You're mine now!."
