She couldn't complain much as she also took almost all of the profits resulting from this research expedition be in col or materials. She even found a dungeon entrance but decided to visit it later with someone to make sure that it will be safe for her, and also to help pass the time faster. This is one of the reasons Ariel had Claudia come with her here too, while the research she's doing may prove beneficial to the frontliner and their business if it were only for that reason the blonde would've probably refused. But having the maid next to her, even if she was only partially active in the role of a moral support, was more than worth anything else they could come with as results after this. It was past lunchtime now and all the enchanted consumables the blonde had and been provided with will now add an extra boost to her stats, quite the significant one as well. More damage, at the expense of her mitigation on top of more accuracy and a higher chance to drop more col. Luckily the last two had no drawbacks and the blonde’s only worry was the decrease in mitigation. “Are you sure about this?” she asked the crimson maid but still engaged a couple of mobs that were not so far from where they just finished resting. The blonde could tell after the initial clash that they were in par with the mobs she had fought previously. Seeing as the blonde was seeking confirmation once again, Claudia let out a soft sigh: “Yes, I’ve taken into account that replacing your armor with a vanity item greatly reduces your mitigation but that is also why you will engage only a couple of mobs and not fight a full party of them. We started with one versus one fights, now it’s time to get data from fighting more opponents at a time.” She hesitated to continue but after a perceivable pause she added. “If you take too much damage, we can swap the equipment again after defeating these two.” Despite being engaged in combat, she was sure that the blonde heard and understood her explanation. It looked like she didn’t need much to get in the zone. Claudia started worrying as she saw that the blonde’s health bar had already dropped significantly. ‘Maybe it really is hard for two handed assault spear users to fight against groups, probably any weapon class that has such a low output for the area of attack type arts.’ she started noting down her observation, constantly keeping an eye on the blonde’s health. The person in question seemed to have taken little notice of her current predicament and was slashing at her opponents mercilessly. While Claudia appreciated the enthusiasm she showed in helping her and her master, she worried about how she acted when there was nobody to supervise her. A small initiative to push herself into leveling up and gaining access to the higher tier echelon, planted itself in the maid’s mind. Would she cultivate that seed in the near future and give raise to a new frontliner? Only time would tell as for now, she was content with her work. In this moment, it included monitoring the fight the front liner was into and making notes regarding its progress and outcome. She would also add notes on what she thought needed improving or altering. She came with the idea of instead using, solely area of attack sword arts, the blonde could alternate. Hit all the mobs in the area until they were low enough to finish one by one using single target arts. She had to make several more calculations in order to assess if it would be beneficial or detrimental to the blonde’s fighting style. Ariel - The Crowned Lion 0 Posted May 31, 2020 Author #6 Report Share Posted May 31, 2020 (edited) It took her some mental acrobatics and the conclusion wasn’t absolute, the math pushed towards using area attacks to maximize energy consumption efficiency but on the other hand, if her HP was being depleted at a high velocity it would benefit her more to pick them off one by one and potentially receive less damage that way. Ultimately she could only present these options and have the player decide for herself how she wanted to act. She knew the blonde well enough to tell that she mostly let herself guided by instinct rather than a mapped out pathway. So far this way of acting seemed to have served her well considering the blonde’s achievements outside in the real world and inside the game. She almost didn’t notice that the blonde had finished off the two mobs and was now nodding pleased, supposedly looking at the loot they dropped in front of her. The maid could make a few educated guesses as to what that was but decide against voicing them and preferred to listen. “I appreciate the hard work you’re putting there. Did you get enough data from that fight? It feels weird fighting without the armor and even if I didn’t take that much damage I’d be more natural fighting with my cloak on.” she admitted and Claudia would respond first with a nod. “Yes, I’ve seen enough of that aspect. Next we’ll add some extra enemies, have you fight against a party again. So you’ll need all the help you can get, armor most of all.” added the maid with a smile. She didn’t have to explain more it seemed, as Ariel was already fidgeting with her HUD. Ariel’s mood visibly improved as she looked over her shoulders and made adjustments to her cloak until it felt like it never left her shoulders. Which technically never did as the other cloak has similar dimensions with this one. Anyway, nothing could beat the real thing and alongside her health, her spirits were also rising and Claudia could see her face brighten up with just that small of a gesture. “Okay let’s take a small rest now and have some of your health recover. I’d like you to have as much of it before engaging the new group. Ultimately she muttered, while reaching for a nearby stone. “Wouldn’t that be inefficient, if you think about the energy cost. In this day and age almost any kid would build their own computer and is familiar with the term. Her doubts about the blonde didn’t come from her lack of faith in the blonde’s mental capacities. She was unsure if the fencer was that well acquainted with technological terms. Being a bonafide ojou-sama, she assumed her PC was bought for her, ready for use from day one. She watched as Ariel first furrowed her brow then gave a slight node, showing that she understood the concept? even if not fully. Pleased with that reaction, the maid rose up and dusted herself off even if there wasn’t a visible need. “So, ready for more?” she asked with a smile. The blonde nodded and packed up whatever was left on the ground. She eyed her health that regened for quite a bit. “Let’s do this!” she claimed with enthusiasm. They descended in the dark cave once more and encountered another type of monster; eight thin legs, robust bodies and multiple sets of teeth. The maid involuntarily winced and stopped in her tracks at the first fight of the group of spiders. Despite the superior amount of bodies, the blonde only took it as having an easier time hitting the mobs that were also lunging towards her in an attempt to remove the intruder in their lair. At some distance from the fight, Claudia tried to muster all the courage she had to step forward and study the fight. Like your average girl, she disliked bugs but didn’t show such aversion as she had now for the unnaturally large spiders that Ariel had engaged in combat. Similarly to the blonde, her life was decided for her since she was little by her parents and masters. She was to become the retainer of her parents’ mansters’ youngest born, which was Dracul, and grow alongside him but always in the position of servitude. It was her family tradition and its members didn’t have an option to protest when they were little, nor would they do so years later after that type of lifestyle has been indoctrinated into them. What was the reason behind this small exposition? Well, in addition to increasing the word count, the author hopes to explain why she would steel her resolve and advance forwards not by conquering her fears but by not wanting to embarrass her master with her cowardice behaviour. That didn’t mean that all her personal feelings and thoughts magically disappeared, only that her sense of duty was stronger and overshadowed them. Now, in a position where she could see the fight occurring, she internally prayed that the mobs wouldn’t unexpectedly change their focus from the blonde frontliner to her. On this high floor, her means of self protecting were dangerously low. This is also among the reasons why she had volunteered herself to conduct this research instead of her brother who was even less prepared than her. In case things went south, she had teleportation crystals on herself and she made sure to also give Ariel a pair before reaching this floor. Somehow, that though helped calm, her tensed nerves and distraught heart, enough that the noteboard and the pen in her hands stopped shaking. She would be able to see that the blonde and the spiders were already halfway through battle, judging after the mobs’ half depleted health bars. It seemed that while the cape didn’t directly affect her strength from a mechanical point of view, she could tell that the blonde mind was centered, fully concentrated on her task and more importantly, that made her avoid incoming blows and getting hit, diminishing her health bar. In fact she noted that her health started rising once more, the passive effect of her battle healing boosted by the additional passive armor enhancement that worked in a similar fashion. It was only now that the blonde heard a loud sigh, as all of Claudia’s tension seemed to fade along with the virtual bodies of the blonde’s former opponents. “What’s wrong?” Asked Ariel, turning around to check on the maid. Of course the maid would shake her head and deny that anything would be out of ordinary, which in itself wouldn’t be a lie now that the source of her inner turmoils were vanquished. Being the first time in a while to fight a full group, she didn’t know what to expect. Ariel tried fighting like this before but was unprepared and it nearly cost her her life in the process. She had to run away from the last mob, having run out of energy before being able to finish it off and her health was in the red zone so she couldn’t afford to chip away at its health with basic attacks. But that didn’t happen today, she managed to win against this floor’s toughest mobs and even with more HP than she started. She eyed another group of mobs and after a quick check that she had plenty of energy, she engaged them with her AoE attack. If she were to have something to complain about it would be her lack of area damage output, the spear falling short in that department. It was a trade she came to terms with when she picked the new weapon; that didn’t mean she liked it. For a while now she had thought of getting a second weapon skill to compensate in that regard but there were just a couple of weapons that actually were worth getting for their AoE and the blonde didn’t see herself wielding any of them. At some point she was thinking of getting the katana skill as she wanted to include it in her curriculum but there were more pressing matters to attend to before having the SP to invest in such a thing. She always tended to be a little more pragmatic about her choices, style coming second after use. With such thoughts in mind the blonde would once again strike the mobs, relieving them of another chunk of their health bars. However it was not enough to change the emerald color from her health bar. The armor did its job, Claudia was approximating that it negated about a third of the incoming damage. That combined with the fact that she was healing another third after every hit thanks to the armor’s enhancements and her battle healing skill; the blonde was now taking only a third of the damage she had received previously. After that simple change of equipment, the odds that stacked in Ariel’s favor seemed to have doubled if not tripled. It looked like the blonde was also aware of it; or the armor had some kind of placebo effect on her. The lioness’ expression exhumed confidence in her skills and determination to cull any who stood against her. She had managed to avoid all the thirty two hairy legs that came her way and dealt yet another devastating blow. Claudia took note of her energy reserves, she was starting once again to deplete them and if she didn’t finish this group in the next couple of moves the blonde would be stripped of the ability to use sword arts; having to resume herself to basic hits that while they were powerful by themselves, it would take a considerable number of them to finish off the spiders. Luckily, her energy was still good so she would rain destruction and bring them close to death. “Almost done.” she chimed, prompting a nod from Claudia who could verify her claim. She started tallying up the rewards the blonde got until now as her observation work was almost done. A significant amount of col was gathered on top of several unidentified items.
