[PP|F20]<<Scents: Pouncing Puma>>Black Cats Cause Bad Luck...

<<Scent of the Wild: Puma>>

The paladin stretched her back out when the two arrived at floor 20. They were five quests in on this line now and she was starting to wonder how many more there was. After their last encounter with the Colossus, she wasn't too eager to figure out what was coming next. "Nee, Night? What's next? You have the information on all the bosses for this quest line, I thought, so how many more do we have to do and what are going to fight. If it's as bad as the giant, I'm afraid to see what could be next in store."

Floor 20 took a stark contrast to the rest of the green-covered floors below it. It was a giant jungle ridden with very jungle themed enemies: Big cats, insects and probably other similarly dangerous wildlife. Perhaps the next target was something themed off the jungle itself. That would be pretty interesting.

NIGHT: what is it
Bistro: A surprise.

NIGHT was re-arranging the items in her pockets as she'd led them around Floor 20. Swap a few performer's crystals out, no anti-DoT protections needed...

"Y'know, for this one particular, my broker didn't say..."

When she was done, she slowed down to meet Yuki's side, a raised brow marking confusion on her face. "All they gave was a location. There's an ancient temple around here. I'm guessing we'll have to explore it to find our next mark."

NIGHT had an inkling that she would know what it was once she laid eyes on it, even without much detail afforded to her. Still, the lack of instruction regarding their foe put her a tad bit on edge. As the players made their way out the settlement, the question continued to burn in her mind.

I'm going to like this one...?

"If that's the case, the boss might have varying appearances? That or their just playing tricks on you. I think I'm going to to underestimate this boss without much information, so let's be careful when we see it. Don't pull any punches. If it hurts more than the Colossus, we can't take it lightly." She began to map out a strategy in her head. Most of them proved to be just split the bosses attention while Night nuked it from a flank, but still she couldn't help but worry as they made their way out of the safe zone into the field.

The quest guided them to the temple easily enough, however, from there, the objective only read "Explore the mysterious temple." She wasn't really liking this. "Everything about this is screaming my nerves. I don't like not knowing what I'm going to be fighting. Especially after what we just fought last time."

Her informants wouldn't send her anything they didn't think she could handle -- that fact was easily practiced by the private of the two she kept in touch with. As such, NIGHT wasn't too flustered about the hunt herself, though what Bistro had implied by her messages were... strange(?) to begin with. "As much as I'd appreciate a bit of strategizing... Let's just take it easy for now."

Their mysterious temple had been located somewhere south of one of the smaller villages. The outpost had been tucked away in the western ranges, cloaked in shadow and mist when they'd arrived in the light of the evening. Past a few rope bridges, they were soon upon its entrance, with stone square footpaths in the overgrown moss welcoming their way into its domain. Rows of short rocky posts marked their way inwards, adorned with various statues of four-legged beasts, crafted in an abstract, angled style.

NIGHT nearly paused at the nearest largest figure, though passed it over eventually, head turning to savour every bit of the artifact. Into the darkness of the building the duo went, and they were greet with an open hall. Various darker hall entrances lined the room, and looking upwards, vines crawled along the curved ceiling, some hanging low to obscure signs of a second floor. The center-piece of their room was a set of stairs that lead to a basement downwards, though most of that path was blotted out in black as well.

"... Well, where to?"

Yuki still didn't like this. Her unease stemmed from the jungle-like for. For some reason, her senses screamed nothing but a snake type boss again, only since they were on a higher floor, she was fearing that it would be stronger than the freakin' Hebi. Nothing scared her more than that honestly.

At the offer of the two paths, Yuki really wanted to stay to the more well lit areas, but alas, she knew that this boss would be deeper into the temple wherever the darkness was. "I have a feeling the boss will be further down, unfortunately. It looks dark down there, makes me wish I actually brought a glow stone, but again I wasn't expecting a cave exploration." The duo walked down the steps into the darkness, instinctively, Yuki summoned her weapon. She couldn't help but worry that something was going to jump them and that it was going to paralyze and eat her.

The hall was completely dark down the stairs, but still the illumination of the floor above helped them see a little further than five feet past their faces. The vines were much more dense down here as well, not to mention the roots that came out of the ceiling above them. The must be far enough under the ground to see tree roots that had made their way through the stone. "I can hardly see." The paladin complains, straining her eyes to see further in the pitch black.

It was strange. While the air outside the temple felt cool with the fading sunlight, the interior was warmer in comparison. NIGHT followed her tank with a nod, wondering if she should've invested into the Night Vision mod while she could.

The darkness wrapped them in its gentle embrace as they entered its shadowy domain. A few times, NIGHT found herself cursing when she'd stumbled forwards, and on one occassion she'd nearly pull them both to the ground, after a miraculous trip had her reach out towards support, only to have grabbed the back of Yuki's cloak instead. At her paladin's complaint, NIGHT found herself agreeing with an annoyed hum. Right when she'd open her menus to allocate her skill points thusly, a glint of harsh light signaled their exit in the distance.

"About time..." A wave of her palm dismissed her window from view. "I'd really like to save my points for something, so let's head there first."

The two quickly made there way to the exit. Once the gleaming light had settled on them, they notice that the area seemed to be a cut of garden that was the center of the temple. It was built into a ditch, making it somewhat difficult to find, but still provided a canopy for the sun to peak through. In the center was a pool of water that seemed to have collected rain water in a structure of stone. "This is interesting. At least we can see now." The paladin said, making sure that her weapon was ready.

Once they had reached the pool of water, the stalker that had been watching them made it's move. Leaping from the shadows, the puma jumped on the paladin, slashing her back in surprise. Already ready for anything, the girl tried to strike back with her own weapon, but it was too fast for her. "[censored]. Well, at least it's not a f*cking snake."

NIGHT was too busy taking in the room. A scatter of forest leaves that managed to cover up the sunlight, with only a few dancing lights allowed to pass through their gaps. Thick bark, roots and vines winding around the room, scaling and crawling along the walls and stone pillars. What exactly was that well supposed to do or be for? As the player mused on their scene, her companion let out a yelp.

The knight whirled around, weapon drawn with a swift action. And then her eyes landed on the darting shadow.

Similarly, so did Nyanko's.

"Huunyaaahh~!!! It's a big kitty~!"

"Meeeeeeewww!!!!"

While one cry was with ferocity, the other was with absolute adoration for the creature. Oh no, how was NIGHT going to bring herself to hit the attacker now? With a big, dumb grin plastered on her face, her brows sank low as she realized the inevitable action she would have to take to defend herself and her friend.

One song crystal down, one sword art unleashed. Ahh, big kitty, please forgive me...!

Yuki recoiled at the pure loving reaction that came from Night. She didn't think about it, but the puma did resemble Nyanko quite a bit. She must absolutely adore cats then. Should have been apparent from her familiar of choice. Again, no snakes are fine in her books.

That all being said, she really hopes that Night will forgive her for trying to murder the beast before it kills her. This time, she would switch it up. She had just learned a new mod and wanted to use it in an actual fight with the gear she acquired from Shield forever ago. A full armed gauntlet that was enough to cover her body for protection like a shield, but it's enhancements favored the shield bash.

Rushing forward, the paladin reached forward with her free hand, balled it into a fist and attempted to deck the black cat in the face, and not Nyanko. It was just a little too agile for her though, stepping out of the way and clawing back at her with no problem whatsoever. Her fist connected with the stone ground, causing enough damage to send the stone's flying through cracks around her wrist. Whatever, she's just drawing aggro. Hopefully Night wouldn't falter and try to spare or something.

"Psspsspss! Kitty, kitty... come'ere~!"

"Meeeeewww!!!!"

NIGHT wasn't even thinking with her defensive stance right now. All she had was a big buster sword out in front of her -- a stick ready to intervene in case the big kitty actually tried to swipe at her while she reached out to pat it. In the time that Yuki had managed to fend off the cat's attacks and tried to land a punch against it, NIGHT was already halfway through to cornering the fluffy feline into a corner, hand outstretched as the being hissed at her.

She'd managed to get into its personal space before it tried to strike at her. Fortunately, her reaction time was just as quick, her blade flashing a blinding white and cutting its paw away from the player in the blink of an eye.

As it recoiled, NIGHT had managed to sneak in one (1) singular stroke of its matted fur against her gloved hand.

(=ↀωↀ=)✧!!

Meanwhile, Nyanko was howling for the bigger, stronger and meaner version of itself to be put to the stone. How dare it attract the sensible attention of its owner? The kitten, for one, was damn near certain it was capable of pulling off a better job at defending the player better than the puma ever could. By NIGHT's side bag did it squeal and screech for death, death and destruction, murder to be upon the evil other, the one false cat of darkness.

Yuki couldn't help but chuckle a little as the little cat familiar reacted poorly to her master's affection towards the bigger cat. However, she wasn't about to lower her defense the same way that Night was. That went against everything that she valued in combat. (Which was not ending up dead.)

Since her Shield Bash was on cool down, she would have to resort to her regular sword arts instead. The golden, white lance hummed with a soft pink energy. The creature was already annoyed with the two enough with Night's constant swooning. It swiped at them both, missing Night, but nailing the tank across the best with it's claw. Her HP was getting close to half now, which was making her a bit nervous. She would be glad when the thing was put down for good, but maybe Night will feel differently about that. Surely she wouldn't falter and let her get closer to death for a big cat.

On the contrary. NIGHT was practically cuddling the cat at this point. How did things get so out of hand? While the puma was ready to slip away into the shadows, even as it gave the party of two a warning strike that seared across Yuki's form rather vehemently, the dark-clad player had latched onto it from behind, hands grappling the kitty! and pulling it down onto the floor. It was almost as though it'd been bested in its evasive performance, and though it tried to snipe back with another attack of its own, in a scary performance of absolute pacifism, NIGHT had caught its paw as it swung, the woman dangerously more interested in examining its appendage.

"Omigosh!!! Look at your toebeans mister!!!"

Her words had been interrupted by both a furious low growl and a high-pitched shrieking from both cats on scene.

"Look! They're so big! Wow!!!" NIGHT squished the darkened paw pads, completely and absentmindedly involved in peppering all her love onto her enemy. "Heehee... Toebeans~❤︎"

Night, basically spooning the over sized Nyanko at this point, was able to catch the beast before it stealthed away from them. That was good at least. She wished she would just finish the thing off at this point, any longer the she prolonged this fight was longer that the beast had to suffer under that a suddenly amazing vice grip.

While she had the moment, Yuki wouldn't waste her attack. She lit up her sword art and attempted to stab the pinned monster to the ground. Unfortunately, even with it being downed and pinned it was able to dodge her attack. It clawed at her leg, causing her to fall on to Night and giving it the moment that it needed to be freed from the girls insane choke hold. It didn't waste any time at clawing the living sh*t out of Yuki's back while she tried to recover from the fall.

"W-woah, hey...!"

As Yuki collided into NIGHT, the trapped woman had essentially freed her baby and allowed the rugged creature to escape. Nyanko was having enough of this. When Suterusu bounced backwards, having struck its prey enough times for the moment, the tiny familiar came waddling and skipping out of NIGHT's bag, mewling loudly at its spotted predecessor.

"Mew!! Meeewww!!!"

The player was busy uprighting the paladin, but the moment she'd caught sight of the puma raising its deft paw in the air just as her kitten was about to reach him, she'd left her position so quickly that Yuki might've stumbled from her boost away. One scoop of the darkness of fury and one dodge roll away from their opponent had left the slinking wildcat batting nothing but air. Instead, as NIGHT bounced back on her heels, Jack's Executioner was at her ready in one hand, and Nyanko in her arm on the other.

A quick swing, and (sadly) the big kitty was nothing more than just data crystals. NIGHT sighed, returning her sword to its sheathe, before looking over to her kitten with genuine concern, lending he the soft pats he genuinely needed.

... On the other hand, poor Yuki...

!!! Disclaimer: On roll #153873, post link was to #12 in this thread instead of #14. Reason: I'd forgotten Stealth Detection was a post action. Whoops. Won't do it again.

STEALTH: Every three rounds, «Suterusu» will enter stealth. An LD rating is not needed to be rolled for this, and it has a base stealth of 18. If the player is unable to find «Suterusu», «Suterusu» will leap from stealth and attack, gaining a +50 damage for the attack. Also, if a 9-10 is rolled, it gains a Partial Phase, ignoring 25% of Mitigation. This will happen every 4 turns.
CUNNING DODGE: On a player's natural attack roll of 9, it is not guaranteed as a hit, and is still affected by Evasion and Accuracy.

When the two girls go their feet, Night attempted to help the paladin to her feet, but when the tiny familiar jumped free of her kit Night's crip on Yuki ceased causing her to fall to the ground, again. She laid there quietly, still feeling a bit of the painful claw marks stinging her back. She didn't need to attack it anyway, she was going to kill it or Yuki would just tank another attack until her companion realized that she was about to die.

As she fanfare played, signifying their triumph over the beast, Yuki continued with her face laying against the stone. The girl sighed quietly as the pain in her back finally settled enough to stop stinging. She slowly got herself up into a sitting position as Night looked rather upset that she had to kill the big fluffy, albeit terrifying, opponent. She couldn't really muster much to say other than: "So... You seem to really like cats. A lot."

"Huh?" NIGHT looked over to Yuki, absent minded in her movements as Nyanko mewled for her attention once again. "Just a little bit. Why?"

She didn't even notice her instinctual movements to bring her kitten over to her and kiss his forehead repeatedly until he'd stopped meowing. With gentle fingers, she massaged into the baby's fur, cooing softly. "Who's a cute kitty? Who's a brave kitty? It's Nyanko~ It's you~!"

A good few seconds passed before NIGHT slipped her familiar into her tracksuit's pocket instead -- that was where he'd preferred to be sometimes, especially when either of the two were in any moods of distress for the foreseeable future. With that settled, the player went over to her party member, pulling Yuki upwards with a hand. Only then did NIGHT notice the waning health bar her paladin held at the side of her interface, and all she could do was...

... awkward chuckle.

"Aha... Haha... u-uh... s-sorry...? -- At- At least it's dead now, right...?"

It seems that Night had just gotten a look at her health bar just as it ticked back up to full. The scratch marks faded from her body and she was feeling better almost instantly. She scratched the back of her head awkwardly. "That looked a little more than 'Just a little bit' to me. Looked like quite a bit."

Yuki was fine up to this point, as she could have taken a few more hits, though, she was beginning to worry about her companions interest with the beast overtaking her priority of the tank's safety. Her weapon formed back into the ether as the paladin turned on her heel and walked out towards the exit. She wanted to get out of here before the boss respawned and they had to fight it again.

Back in the darkness, the two walked back through the temple and made there way into the exit.

The rest of their way back towards Inti was dipped in silence. Between the shadows and the Yuki's lack of words, NIGHT was wondering if she'd hit a wrong nerve somewhere in Yuki's playbook. Was it the incredible danger NIGHT had put her friend in? Or her temporary lack of seriousness, busy fussing over their enemy in the fight? Her gaze settled on the quest objective in the corner of her interface just as she mused on it, trudging up the steps back into the first hall of the temple.

It wasn't every day she got to see a big cat up front and all at once. One barely even had the chance to look at a lion up close at a zoo back in the real world.

Still, just as easily that Nyanko piped up angry, the player figured her paladin was upset about her knight's behavior. And as NIGHT was debating on how to speak on it, her apologies all seemed half-hearted, the words, explanations all dying in her throat.

"Sorry," she'd finally managed to say. They were out in the light by now, accompanied by fog and mist. NIGHT looked away, solemn, daring not to meet her friend's gaze. "Your health was low, wasn't it? I should've focused better on the fight. I'll..." A burrowing of her familiar in her pocket reminded her of someone else she'd have to please. With a sigh, she corrected her terms. "I'll try not to get carried away with them next time."

The feeling between them was tense, something like she was feeling with Mari lately, and she definitely didn't want their relationship to reenact her last visit with the orange player. After a moment, she was about to try and divert the conversation from that when Night spoke first. An apology, that she didn't feel was entirely warranted. She didn't necessarily ignore the danger, just maybe had forgotten about her friend for a moment. Night had always been there for her when she was in danger, though so she wasn't going to fuss about it.

"Hey, there's no need to worry about that." Yuki smiled, throwing her arm over the other girls shoulder for a moment. "Honestly, I found your passion for cats kind of cute. It would be hypocritical of me to judge you for your passions when I'm guilty of it too. I didn't even trickle below 50% so I wasn't worried. We've only got one more of these quests to do, right? Let's go get it finished so I can get the statue's benefits and get a little more tougher. Then maybe we can come back and see this boss again. Give you a bit more time to look at the cat without their being much of a sense of danger for me.

The way Yuki easily passed over the issue was both a relief and a concern at the same time. NIGHT was glad to know it'd been no trouble tanking for her right when her guilty pleasures hit her most. On the other hand, her paladin wasn't cordial for the sake of keeping their bond afloat, right...? Surely Yuki would let her know if things went a little out of hand. Just as much as she'd trust NIGHT with her life, in turn her DPS put her faith back in her shield about matters like these, though whether or not Yuki realized it was another ball game entirely.

Then she realized her friend's arm was wrapped around her shoulder. Wait, did she just call her cute?

NIGHT shoved her familiar over into Yuki's hands and pulled away instinctively. "Nyanko's the cute one," she rebuked, trying to hide her scarlet face behind a darkened gloved hand. "But yeah, there's just one more on the list. I'll have my head in the game for this one, for sure."

Just as they were stepping over to the floor's teleporter, NIGHT sent Bistro a quick message.

NIGHT: tell me what it is next time
Bistro: Fine.
Bistro: But did you like it though?
NIGHT: ye
Bistro: :)
