[PP | FL10] Scents of the Wild/Leeching Nightmare

Recommended Posts

The Scent of the Wild quest updated immediately. Kiluia had put this on the backburner for a few days since he read the actual details of the quest. Underground. He thought to himself. It was an underground cavern quest. The entire floor was underneath the surface. Just his luck. He sighed gently as he scrolled down the quest just to learn that they had to fight interesting monsters to finish it all off. He had already fought the Lich King with Raidou before so this Lich seemed completely tame comparative to what he had done before. A frown still formed on his face though.

He was in their kitchen reading over the details. For some reason, a burning smell was coming from his kitchen that he had ignored. Shit. He let the toast burn in the toaster. He grunted swearing under his breath as he took away the burning toast. He was upset and he didn’t tell Haine of the quest, although it was probably also updated in her quest log as well. A sigh was heard as he continued making their food for breakfast. Quail Eggs with Toast, buttered muffins, and a cup of orange juice. “Haine! Breakfast, love!” He shouted up the stairs. The penguin came waddling down out of her little room with the cub in tow. They both knew the word breakfast very well.

What was that smell?

Haine stirred awake at the sound of Kiluia shouting. In all her groggy stupor, she flipped the covers off the bed. She sniffed the air, it smelt of char. "Huh." She dragged her heavy limbs out of bed and rushed down to the kitchen, too enveloped in the situation to pay heed to her dissheveled appearance. Feet padding down the corridor to the kitchen, she calls out. "What's goin' on?!" She jumped to conclusions. Was it a house fire? Her eyes went wide and the fear was enough to stave off her drowsiness. Upon seeing that there was no threat and that all three were sitting at the dining table, her cheeks flushed the color of a fire hydrant.

She'd realized too late that she'd forgotten to freshen up. She skimmed her fingers through her wild hair, reminiscent of a lion's mane. She wore her embarrassing duck pajamas the night before. "G-Gah!" Without a word, she fled back to her room. Screw the burning home, she looked like a hot mess! She worked quick to fix her appearance.

The burning smell dissipated shortly and he sat there with the familiars only to spot his beloved in her PJ’s. No one said a word to her as she took off like a banshee before they could react. He was not sure he had seen what just happened. He looked at his familiar than at the cub. He placed their food on the ground before just staring at the entrance to their dining area. He was slightly baffled at it but he moved on. He simply sat there chewing his toast trying to keep his attention on what was going on around him. It did not work really since the creeping feeling of the underground felt like it was over his shoulder.

His eyes seemed distant and his body language rigid as the food became cold on his plate. He seemed more lost in thought than in this reality they lived in. For the entire duration that Haine was gone, he was more of a statue than anything for the time being. The familiars ate their things and began playing by throwing left over crust around trying to see who would get hit by it.

She made haste to equip her battle garb and freshen. She brushed her long blue locks and swept it into a bun. She looked in the mirror, she was at the very least presentable now. She made her way to the dining table and settled into the empty chair. "Whoops, I'm back!" To the left, she saw the two familiars playing ball with the toast crust. Pingu had scored a goal, falling backwards off the chair with the crumb caught in her beak. Haine chortled, typical Ping. She grabbed the fork and surveyed the table, the meal looked delicious as usual. She stabbed a piece of egg and was about to eat until she noted Kiluia's downcast expression.

He seemed lost in thought, his plate left all but untouched. He stared off into space. She furrowed her brows. Odd. "Kiiil." No response. She waved her hand in his face. "Love, what's got you all in wonderland?"

The penguin cheered for it's fine play of catch the crust. Kiluia still seemed distant until his thoughts were interrupted by Haine and her sing song voice. He dropped his cold toast and looked at her. "When did you get here?" He seemed surprised from her appearance."Oh.. I was just thinking about the next quest. It's a bit unnerving." He played with his fruit before taking a bite. He took a deep breath before taking another bite.

He was extremely bothered by all of it. More so than any other time. " It's underground. And I'm already not a fan of the quest location." He muttered placing his food to the floor. The two familiars  swarmed the food and gobbled it up faster than he put it down. He sighed slightly looking at her with a frown. " You already know why. But we have to do it. It'll be fast, I hope." He picked  up his plate and headed to the sink to wash it off.

He mentioned the quest and her face fell a little. She skimmed over it before, shivers crawling up her spine. It was an unpleasant memory but not one that effected her to such extent. But still, if she were given a choice, she would pass the cave in a heartbeat. She was going to inform Kiluia about finding another partner to continue the quest sometime, it just never came around.

She noted the falter in his tone and the way his brow twitched, he was struggling to overcome his emotion. "Oh... we're doing that one today?" Kil managed a few bites here and there, his appetite was not the usual. Her brows furrowed in concern as she set her fork down. "We don't have to do it, y'know?" She rested her palm on his shoulder and tilted her head. It was no use, however. His resolve was solid despite the turmoil within. He would fight himself, knowing his character. His food was stolen and devoured by those ravenous fiends. She sighed and worked to finish her own plate. She couldn't finish it all and left hers on the side of the sink. As much as she didn't want to be in that cave, she would go with him for support if that was what he wished.

He finished his dishes and anything she placed beside him to wash up as well. Did they have to do it? No, not at all. But it was something in his quest log he would rather not look at. It didn’t seem difficult to do for the duo. He sighed a bit and placed both hands down on the countertop before speaking to her. “Despite knowing where it will go, its filled with people and their undead people as well. They don’t attack people from what I hear. At least, we can go where we know that the place won’t let us disappear.”

He turned around to face her and stared into her eyes. He watched her face trying to figure out if she had an issue with it as well. It was there. It was on her face just like it was on his. “We can try it. If we can’t, we can leave or flee. I don’t care. I would rather get this done and move on with our lives.” He smiled slightly. “I would rather do this with you than anyone else though.”

Shivers crawled up her spine as she willed her composure together. Floor ten was not the type of place she'd frequent, a completely underground habitat infested with the undead. The humanoid creatures were uncanny, reminiscent of zombies. She swallowed thickly, the situation today had put her on the spot and morally she refused to back down. She would have to swallow her fears now. "Yeah, cool..." Haine trailed off, scratching the back of her head. Not cool.

They exchanged glances and she could sense that he picked up her transparent expression. His assuring words invoked determination in her. He was right, they had each other. They were more than capable of besting this foe together, the only thing in the way was their fear. She grabbed his hands and squeezed them tightly. "Of course, we can do this." A soft smile curved her lips. "On the bright side, we can collect crystals?" She giggled and slapped his shoulder lightly. She was attempting to lighten the mood and draw his attention away from his thoughts.

Despite knowing how they both felt, he would proceed with the quest. He kissed her cheek as he pulled her into their living room. “We can do whatever you want.” He gave a half smile walking towards the door. “Pingu and cubbo! Wanna come with?” This would make it a little more doable to go on this quest. Eyes of amber looked over her before squeezing her hand. It was out of reassurance that they would be fine. They knew what they were headed into. This quest had been done dozens of times over various experienced adventurers. There was nothing left to hide really.

The group of four made their way to the gate. Within the next moment, the teleport gate took them to an underground city. It was lit with bluish white flames in their lantern posts. His eyes were adjusting to the dark before looking at everyone who had arrived. “… Hmm..” He was pondering how he felt being here now. It seemed a little more reasonable since they were in a town. But the skeletons and other undead creatures threw him off. On top of that, regular adventurers were walking around talking as if it were normal. “Well damn.”

They exchanged a look of determination, it would be done regardless. With their familiars in stride, the quartet headed for the underground town. Just as the rumors were, the town was a gloomy one, as if a thick veil of smoke were blocking her vision. She peered into the darkness as the crystal's effect wore off, light transitioning into pitch black. As they walked, lanterns with a light blue flame lined the sidewalks. It were as if they were submerged in a cave, flourescent blue minerals dusting the roof of the settlement. As she adjusted to the light, shivers wracked her spine. There were the undead, civilians which looked humanoid with some grotesque state of decay to them. They were reminiscent of zombies, save for the hint of sentience they still preserved. It was disturbing to look at.

Instinctively, she found herself reaching for the closest clutch, Kiluia. She hooked her arm between his and it could've been seen as a gesture of affection were it not for the way she shrinked inward. The eerie settlement had the same affect on the familiars, Pingu laying on top of the cub and burying her face into his soft fur to evade the scenery. Miska struggled to drag the weight for two while walking in front of the couple. For a moment, the bluenette was uncharacteristically quiet, eyes darting every which way skeptically.

Looking at Haine, he squeezed her arm slightly. He reassured her that this was going to be okay. The dimly lit cover of the street was better than complete pitch black. The underground was still something that crept in the back of his mind. The creature to adventurer ratio was in favor of the undead side despite that there were indeed people walking around. He glanced down at Pingu and patted her head. “Get off the cub.” Unwillingly, Pingu slowly drug her blubbery self off of the cub. He looked over at Haine and spoke gently. “You’re doing great.” His voice was a low hushed tone. He, himself, was not convinced himself as they group walked through the town.

The edge of town started to grow closer with the lack of creatures started to disappear. The path before diverged into several places. The trick here was that the path with light was the way to go. Everyone would often think that a creepy place shouldn’t have light right? Cliché. They started to traverse the stone path that lead down a bend. It was cooler as they were headed toward the river. They were on the right path but would have to keep going in order to make it there. “Not gonna lie.. I don’t like the underground…”

His touch was comforting in the midst of all this eeriness. She leaned closer to him, surely in his personal space. The undead staggered by, and one in particular came too close to comfort. She squeaked and stirred Kiluia in the opposite direction, veering off to the edge of the sidewalk. The strange thing spared not a glance at her with its cloudy eyes, she could not tell where it was looking at exactly. All of the undead seemed to wander without an agenda, completely uninterested by the sparse human life around. She didn't speak the whole way through town.

Once they'd reached the outskirts, the population thinned out. She relaxed her stiff shoulders and let out a shaky sigh. "Y-Yeah we got this... we got this." She pat the young man's shoulder and mustered a bright smile, however there was an edge of uncertainty to it. All that mattered was that she had a point to prove to herself, she would not back down from a challenge when presented to her. They moved down the lit path to the river, the air thickening as it grew humid. Wisps of fog drifted about the air, shrouding the horizon. "D-Do you have a flashlight or something..?" She mumbled.

He looked at her and shook his head. “ I don’t think flashlights are even in the game.” There was the night vision ability but he didn’t have that perk. Nor did she for that matter.  He pointed at the blue lanterns and then the blue resonating crystals. “All we have to is follow this path down. That’s what everyone is saying really.” The air was cooling even further now. The flow of water could be heard to. It was something that the game mechanics copied over here from the real world. He looked at her once more and then back down at the familiars. “Just stay close. Let’s not disturb anything until we see the quest monster.”

His eyes focused on the dark and the sound of rushing water began to grow louder. His right hand clenched into a ball as they progressed down the worn path. It was a good thing the marker was on their map. A blink was given as he heard different sounds.

"Oh yeah, you're right." Her downcast gaze signified her disappointment. So they would have to try their luck in the dark? She did not come prepared for this. She could only hope that the final destination provided enough lighting through the flourescent crystals lining the walls. The path on the way there had just enough lighting for them to get a gist of where they were, it was not pitch black - thankfully. She noted the cooling air, a shiver crawling up her spine. The vapor left an odd sensation as inhaled it, a cool feeling radiating off her forehead. The flow of water served to quell her anxiety, as the white noise was filled with something more than just the sounds of their footsteps and the howling wind.

"Okay..."

The typically vivacious young woman was brought to silence as she directed her energy at keeping her composure. She knew the other was going through his own struggle, she would not add to it under her watch. She took deep breaths and tried not to hyperventilate at the sound of something skulking about. She wouldn't have been so nervous if she could see well enough.

He glanced over at her once before the view of rushing water came into their sights. The skulking sound were warriors of the undead. As far as he could tell, there was only 4 of them. However, there was another dangerous creature lurking about from their view. It was on the edge of the water and barely seen. It seemed they would have to get through the four first before entering the fray with the other main boss.

He gave a sigh as he stood up from behind the brush. He looked at her and spoke gently. “We can do this if we do it the right way okay?” He gave her a reassuring smile. They were going to press through this challenge like any other challenge they had done so in the past. He placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it gently as well. “Pingu. Cubbo. Stay here. I don’t want you two getting hurt. That would be distracting for us.” The familiars gladly stayed frozen in their spot. It was actually funny.

From the shadows emerged four monstrous leeches, attracted to the sounds of their footsteps. They were grotesque and oversized, surrounding a haunting figure, their king. She swallowed thickly as she took in the sight, a hollowed skeleton dressed in a tattered cloak. Its movements staggered as it walked, closer, with its little minions skulking forward. Haine turned to Miska to try and call him over, but he was in his corner petrified. She frowned, but she was not too concerned. This thing? Piece of cake.

She took a heavy breath and closed her eyes, nodding as Kiluia pat her shoulder in assurance. "Alright." She materialized her glaive, catching it between her hands. "Step aside, love! Things are about to get gruesome here." She shot him a wink and fixed her stance, letting the leech advance halfway. It was then when she sprinted forth, pivoting on her heels as she sliced the worms in half. Spillage littered the floor and a bit of it splashed back on her. "Blech, gross!" She shrieked and worked to wipe it off, all but forgetting the looming threat before her.

Seeing his beloved strike down all four of those monsters, it seemed like the barrier that as protecting the Lich released. So that’s how it works…He thought in his head as he lowered his stance. “My turn!” He shouted and took off. Focusing on the lich made the surroundings become faded in his vision. All eyes were on the creepy ass creature that had been the primary focus of his attack. He dashed from left to right looking at the directions of the eyes of the Lich. He wanted to ensure that the creature had no idea he would attack from. With the next moment, he was in front of the creature but the next he had launched an attack from behind the Lich. His hand pulled back in a yellow glow and came crashing down on its cranium.  (Allmight -14 EN)

The creature grabbed upon Kiluia’s clothing and he felt his life force dwindle a bit. He blinked as he pulled away after the stinging sensation subsided. He frowned a little as he spoke to her. “It restored a little health but nothing we can’t handle.” She would have to finish him off.

Haine, pushing aside her disgust from the leech guts, cheered for her love. "Yeah, show em' who's boss!" She pumped her fist and returned to the mess on her. Eeeeeh. She equipped a rag and wiped herself down, relaxing a little since the monster was on its last limbs. Big mistake. Her eyes narrowed upon the edgy skeleton king as she growled. The thing had leeched onto Kiluia, draining a minuscule portion of his health.

"Hey, hands off! Mine!" She bit back, activating her most powerful sword art in arsenal. The Lich had the audacity to touch him? That provided more than enough momentum for her to deliver the final blow. She charged her glaive and rushed in, vaulting herself into the air. She tackled the skeleton to the ground simultaneously, delivering a powerful crush to its cranium. The sharp end cut clean through its head, embedding itself into the mossy bog beneath. "Hmph."

She lifted herself off the creature and watched it materialize. Her spear, due to her sheer brute force, was a struggle to remove from the soil. She grunted and leaned back, pulling at the hilt with all her might. With a fling of dirt her way, the glaive came flying back as it landed beside her head. She fell backwards with a squeak. She stored the weapon away and pushed herself off the ground, dusting her hands.

On the flip of a dime, her threatening aura transitioned into a happy-go-lucky one. She hummed and made her way over to him. She placed her palms on his shoulders and stood on her tip toes, planting a soft kiss on his lips. She pulled away, her hands sliding down to his chest. "You okay, love? It wasn't as hard as I thought." Her eyes closed as the skin around them crinkled.

Unceremoniously, the two familiars came crashing in between them. She flinched at the sudden ruckus. "What now?" Miska was scratching at her pant leg, seeking attention. She sighed and knelt down, swooping the cub into her arms. "Don't be scared, Mees. We'll protect you," she cooed, planting a kiss on his soft forehead. He was too adorable, sometimes she forgot he was her aid in combat and not just a cute pet.

He shook his head. He didn’t wanna stick around on this floor more than he had to. His eyes would look down at the statue that was dropped by the quest monster and he handed her reward. He spoke in a soft tone. “I would rather leave now.” He frowned slightly. They did make short work of the Lich this time. It was the fact that they were underground that bothered him. He slowly walked with her and spoke in a soft tone. “You did a great job.” He would squeeze her hands. He leaned in and kissed her lips before walking back toward the gate. He glanced at the pathway as it was lit up even brighter. It seemed that the evil was tinkering with the lanterns in the area.

The town was in sight as he sighed in a sign of relief. The growing masses of undead and skeletons were beginning to go toward the gate and he looked at Haine. “Good timing too. Looks like its about lunch time.” He spoke gently.

She could sense the tension rebuilding in him, now that the distraction was over and the target was eliminated. He spoke little but kissed her lips, squeezing her hands and reassuring her. She smiled softly and pulled away. They walked back to town in silence, and all the while her eyes were peeled for anything suspicious among the bogs. As they advanced, the cool air and fogged thinned out. The sound of the rushing river subsided and the lights grew a slight bit brighter, a sign that the town was encroaching. Upon seeing the gate, she let out a relaxed sigh.

They had made it unscathed and faced their fears after all. Would she come here again unless absolutely necessary? Absolutely not. Her stomach growled on cue, just before he mentioned lunch. "Yes please! I'm starving." Nonetheless, the quartet left as soon as possible. They'd accomplished enough for the morning.
