[F06-SP] The Gemini

Recommended Posts

If possible Val knew he would have been sweating bullets. The sixth floor was an actual jungle of suffering. Even if his face was not carved out of stone, it did not maintain the ability to display his discomfort. If he was in the real world his clothes would be stuck to his body from the sweat and humid. Val could recall the time when he was sleeping with his dad's bookie and his dad walked in. He was sure the silence that followed was more comfortable than the current heat. At least with his dad he was able to explain it off as ancient gladiator training.

Val took the immolation potion out of his bag. He was planning on fighting some tigers that was said to drop decent materials to forge a strong spear. If not for that temptation he would not bother being on a floor this high up, as he had plenty still to do on the first floor. He chugged the potion like it was beer at a frat house.

Valentine was putzing around gathering materials and supplies for his excursion. The potion would last for a day so he had time. It was not long that he walked out of a cafe for breakfast when a person spoke to him.

"You look pretty strong." A creepy hooded figure informed him. Val was going to walk off as he had no time for creepers and would be player killers. A flash of thought popped into his head as he remembered talking to a sempai in his guild about a hidden quest on this floor. It started off in the same way with the hooded figure and everything. Val stood still to see if the NPC would continue. "I'm looking to test my skills. If you beat me, I'll teach you a hidden skill. What do you say?" Sure enough the lines were said. Valentine had no hesitation as he answer.

"Sure. Let's go."

Valentine had no hesitation as he followed the NPC. The NPC did not walk for too long. It left the safety of the safe zone to place Val in a deserted spot. Val was only a little nervous as he walked. He left the safety of the zone but understood no risk happened without reward. If he would have ignored the quest he would have missed out on a valuable chance. If it was to get one step to achieving his goals he would walk on glass and eat poison.

The NPC was just walking as Valentine tried to gleam clues from it. The information Val was told was that the NPC shapeshifted into a copy. A copy that had the ability to be on par with the original. As far as he knew at least half the people that took on the quest failed. It was even rumored that the higher your level the harder the quest was.

The area the Gemini stopped moving before lowering the hood and turning around. Valentine was so greatly shocked it actually showed on his face. Few things have shocked him this much since he entered SAO. This could be counted amongst the handful. The reason why he was so shocked was because he never understood how good he looked. Val could not be considered the type to be conceited. He never looked in a mirror since coming online. It was why seeing how great he looked shocked him.

The Gemini used that moment of surprise and took the initiative in the exchange. Valentine was quickly bashed in the head with his own spear. He was shocked by how the technique had actually hurt. His heath slid down in a great amount. The Gemini even copied his stony expression and did not smile. The immolation potion took effect as a small flame appeared on the Gemini's body before going out. The health taking a small dip from the NPC.

The Gemini was moving really fast. It was enlightening to see the differences in spear tactics and techniques. Val could feel his spearmanship increase with every exchange. Valentine went in for a stab when the Gemini twirled its body, getting closer within range. The Gemini jabbed forward at a frightening speed as Valentine got stabbed in the throat. If this was a battle in the real world Valentine would have died at that moment. The amount of damage Val took was immense.

Val moved to retaliate when he noticed his body was not responding. The throat stab inflicted him with a paralysis he was temporarily unable to move. He vision was tinged with yellow and a weird sound could be heard. Valentine was never inflicted with the paralysis status so he was bewildered. The Gemini did not notice right away and pulled back as if to prepare for Val to counterstrike.

The respite did not last long before the NPC Gemini figured it out. When it did not see Valentine movie it was ready to go again. The effect that was afflicting Valentine was lifted. Only for the Gemini's spear to be back at his chest. The spear lifted him in an arc before slamming him back down on his head. The damage that Valentine sustained from the attack was immense.

It would almost be suffice to say that Valentine would have been a goner before the match even started if it was not for his armor. The armor not only soaked soaked up damage it also allowed him to heal slowly over time. It was the saving grace that kept his health up. Valentine heard the rumors but did not believe the battle was going to be this hard. If not for the immolation potion he took before the fight. The Gemini NPC would have sustained zero damage.

"You are not using your spear as great as you could. You lack resolve when you strike and fluidity to seek an opening. The weapon works well for you but you are lacking while using it." The voice that spoke felt like it would have came from Vals own mouth if he had opened it. The Gemini NPC was being decent while beating the digital snot out of Valentine.

Valentine barely got off the ground, with the stun from the NPC barely wearing off when another stab was coming for him. This time he did not move his body but his hands. His hands acted like a little windmill rotators making his spear the fan blades. The momentum knocked the spear aiming towards him off course. As he had the advantage Valentine rotated a second time while turning. He activated the <<heft>> spear art while in that motion. Giving damage that he directly inflicted for the first time since the battle started.

This was the kind of battle that Val was living in the game for. The Gemini NPC could have been considered a hard NPC mob boss by many to beat. Val was looking at it more like a training program. The Gemini NPC made some valid points in the deductions it had made. Val used those deductions to retaliate.  As soon as he spotted an opening his spear unhesitatingly went in for the kill. He was not worried about how he would survive just finishing off the enemy.

A crash sound was heard as both spear points found the chest of their opponent. Sending them reeling back from each other in a moment of respite. Val did not say a single syllable neither did the Gemini NPC. They looked as if they were figuring out each others weak points. Valentine was long passed the yellow health on his bar and so was the NPC.

Valentine was using his spear to attack more. The battle was fierce as well as informative. Valentine was unsure about how the NPC acted with others but it was a decent fellow with him, assuming it was a fellow. Even while fighting and his mind running on 110% to fight, he still wondered in the back of his head. If SAO had a program that could train people in the weapons they used would it not run like this. The cardinal system recorded the players information and displayed it as the avatar and other things they used. If the recorded information was played with adjustments it could show ways of improvement.

The spear was a weapon that forged a path of no retreat. Only a strong heart could dare to use its power. Valentine leapt and stabbed at the knees quickly. The NPC fell to the ground as its body was shaken. The first time Val used that move.

If Valentine paid more attention instead of trying to retreat he would have noticed the NPC was stunned. In his defense he only knew what the stunned icon looked on his screen. He was not adept enough to read the situation and figure out that his enemy was bit slow, and had the small electric arc animation from being stunned. The arcs being a dead giveaway.

Val's spear was moved around in a wide arc, the tip lunging forward as if to slash the throat. If this was not a game the throat slash would have been life ending. As it was virtual the red line made at the target only decreased the health, that was followed by a <<heft>>. By health percentages they should be closely matched with Val only having a bit more. Val was learning his lesson in the ay of the spear and only focused on killing. As long as he beat the NPC before he went down he could at least heal up after.

This time the Gemini NPC did not give Valentine any pointers with his spear techniques. They both seemed to have been focusing on each other as they stabbed, parried, and slashed. It was an intricate set of moves that was used and Valentine could say that when it came to pure spear techniques he was gradually improving to surpass the Gemini NPC. He did not try to block as much but you use offensive techniques as defensive techniques.

A spear tip came to Valentine as if it was blessed by thunder, Valentine moved the butt end of his spear to intercept. He brushed the enemies spear tip upward, put an upward rotation on his spear, and went into another <<heft>>.  A great deal of damage was given to Gemini. As its health slid down.

Valentine felt a tremble start to build in his hands. While he had more health than his opponent, his energy levels were gradually falling. Depending on how it went his next spear strike could the last exchange.

If one was looking on the situation from the outside it would be confusing. It was almost like a person cloned themselves, if Val was being watched they could even report him for glitching. The NPC and Val stared at each other with the utmost of concentration. A leaf touched the ground and the two moved in tandem. Valentine released a <<heft>> that he believed held more skill than what was normally released.

The two attacks met and it looked like time froze. The Gemini NPC was struck back as Valentine's attack hit. One health left and Val pounced before stopping the spear an inch in front of the imposters throat. "It looks like I won this one." Valentine spoke back with softened features that displayed his exhausted joy. He overcame a trial and was proud of it.

"Good job."  The Gemini responded and Valentine recieved a notification. He read it to find out about his new skill. One he looked back up the NPC was gone.

Valentine took a breather after his battle against the NPC. As far as being on floor 6 he was barely qualified, he was lucky he was able to take a look around the place. As long as he avoided the monsters he could exit the place with his life in tact. The main reason he showed up was to find materials for his songs. A lesson he was told made him believe that different influences made an impact on the qualities of his recording. A song about the life and death battle he just had was more likely to be higher quality than a song about breakfast.

Walking away from the battle Val wanted to look for the material crystals. At times he wished he could have been an alchemist. The plants for their things were everywhere. If he new how to identify them he would be bulk selling it. Compared to a crystal he has yet to find.

As Valentine searched he also used the time to explore the place around him. Players fought monsters, searched like he did, and even completed quests from what he could tell. Valentine stopped a random player with cat ears to find out somethings.

"Uhm. Where did you get those ears? They are actually pretty nice." The girl looked at him oddly. His words did not match his facial expression and gave him an odd air.

"They are a specialty of Caith Sith guild. It is more of an exclusive support item. If you join you would be able to get a pair free." She blinked her eyes at him and looked sad when he shook his head. He had to continue if he did not want to make it back to his place on the first floor empty handed. All he could find in this area was despair. So Val started to move a bit further out.

You would be surprised how much real habits and the likes affect the people in the game at times. Valentine should have been tired slugging through the denseness of trees and foliage. The large mosquitoes and air humid enough to drown in sure be a deterrent. For Val it just reminded him of Winters in Florida. He loved the beaches and owning a private resort made the trip worthwhile.

Val smacked another mosquito as he looked beneath a nearby rock. The amount of crystal materials he was able to find at the moment was equal to the amount of f***** he gave to people that worn real fox fur. His last place to look was by a bog it stuck to his shoes but gave him nothing. As bubbles started to form Val turned and power walked away. He was sure something was beneath the bog and did not want to find out what it was.

Val could not help but wonder if he should switch floors entirely. All the looking he had done so far and none were able to give him a thing. He just checked a small tree hollow to get nothing. He would not be surprised if it was judgement from the cardinal system. He would have to put his life at risk to find a treasure he believed to be remotely acceptable. If he was at a lower level it would be less deadly. While getting strong as soon  as possible was his goal it did not mean he would take pointless risks. If his death was guaranteed because he fought a monster while he was weak, he would be no different than a person committing suicide.

A small hill stood in his way from the next spot he was heading to. Valentine trekked up the heal to see a series of pathways leading into a lush forest. Valentine contemplated on which path to take.

It was a short choice as Val turned around. He was a lot of things but stupid was not one. His gut was telling him that going further would be dangerous for his health. He had already went in the direction away from the tigers we he followed the NPC. Now he was getting deeper into a place in which a single animal could rip his head off. There was a thin line between bravery and stupidity, the line was if you could come out alive with the choice.

Valentine was checking a few more piles for the necessary crystals. He was coming up short as all he could find was herbs, herbs, and more herbs. Not a single crystal with all the searching he did. It was doing nothing but wasting his time. A busy person like Val had other stuff he needed to attend to. He did not want to delay.

If the walk to where to his current location was painful the walk back was just as bad. Val had to move carefully to avoid monsters that could rip him to shreds with their claws. This including the bog he used to travel through before. Now he could see a team of experience players fighting a large crocodile. It was an intriguing fight as a man with an abnormally large shield stopped a death roll. Val almost wondered if the shield was brought just to beat the monster. He did not dwell on it for too long as he left. If the monster noticed him, even when fighting the other players it could lead to his death. If he distracted the players it could lead to their death. Either scenario would not go well.

Valentine power walked out of the way checking a few trees along the way. Just because he was making a strategic withdrawal does not mean he could stop searching.

Val stuck his hand in another hole. A day of fisting trees did not net him any gains worth note. Val should have left after defeating the Gemini NPC. That or he could have went after those tigers like he wanted to. He looked at the time on his HUD and was greatly disappointed. He accomplished nothing he really wanted to. He had to head to the first floor to change. It was about time for him to go and do important Guild stuff.

Heading back into Krycim Val was ready to take a shower and rest. If he had the time to he would have. Time was not the only thing he was missing. He was missing the will to spend money. Times were hard and he was saving up for a studio. It was the only reason he did not bother to spend money on the floor and was heading back. He got on the platform and was sent to Floor one.
