Bahr: HP: 1665/1665 | EN: 150/150 | DMG: 26 | MIT: 79 | ACC: 5 | EVA: 6 | FLN: 12 | HLY: 6 | LD: 8 | HB: 24 | BH: 83 | PHASE | PROSPERITY 3

Just as Bahr had promised the Chief, he arrived outside the western perimeter of the settlement the following day an hour before noon. Uso Tsuki would be arriving soon - no doubt with guards - and apparently it was up to Bahr to take them down before they infiltrated the city and committed the unthinkable. Bahr always felt just a little squeamish heading into fights against humanlike mobs. He knew that they weren't real people, and that they would simply respawn, but it still sank into his stomach like a stone. That being said, he was sure that once he got swept into the tempo of combat, his inhibitions would fall away.

His aim was to finish them off as quickly as possible so that he could get onto the main course of the day, which was a sub-dungeon on the twenty second floor. Whether or not he would actually have the time was still up in the air, but it wasn't going to stop him from trying. The more SP he amassed for the big showdown over the weekend, the better.

Well-Trained: Every 5 Rounds (Starting on his first turn), Purotekutā will go into the way of the oncoming successful attack, blocking all of the damage and dealing half of it back to the player. Purotekutā will not reflect any status effects that may incur on a critical attack.

Ultimate Warrior: Every 5 Rounds (Starting on his second turn) Uso-Tsuki will gain a charge against you, getting +25 Damage on a successful hit against you that turn

Almost as though on cue, a trio materialized from the brush further along the path. Bahr turned to face them and drew Dawn's Demise, prompting the party to stop upon taking note of him. "That'll be far enough, thanks," Bahr suggested. "Was wondering when you'd show. You were almost late. Afraid I'll make it difficult to keep time, too."

Bahr first strike was a light one - meant more to gauge their reaction than anything else. Though it wasn't his typical flavor of visceral brutality, Bahr still managed to close the distance from where he'd been standing to the party in near the blink of an eye. Despite this blistering approach, they were ready. Difendā folded out in front of Uso-Tsuki, and then Purotekutā folded out in front of him, catching Bahr's blade with his own and forcing the Kingslayer back.

The silence of the entire exchange felt louder than it was. No words spoken, no unflattering grunts. Just the clashing of blades and the skitter of feet across the dirt road.

Bahr's eyes narrowed as he took in the sight. Uso-Tsuki's bodyguards weren't only fiercely loyal - they were well trained. They silently gazed back as Uso-Tsuki turned and retreated back down the path from whence he came. That left only Bahr with the two bodyguards, and the thick blanket of quiet that seemed to smother the lot of them. Bahr felt like asking them about their inclination to support an assassin like Uso-Tsuki, but realized it would be an exercise in futility. He had his reasons, and so did they. Talking would only ruin the moment.

Instead, he assumed his stance, at the ready to cut them into ribbons the moment they made a move. Likewise, they simultaneously bent slightly at the knees and rose their blades, taking in their mark and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. At this point the only words spoken were those of the trees - whispers as the wind caressed their leaves.

When one of those leaves inevitably snapped from its parent branch and touched the earth below, the opposing forces sprung into action. This time, it was Difendā who moved in to take the brunt of Bahr's wrath - and he wasn't holding back anymore. It was now the full brunt of what he could manage, leveled against the bodyguard with no remorse. As Dawn's Demise settled into the pit of the man's stomach, he did not hesitate. He instead took advantage of the closeness to attempt a counterattack, plunging his blade toward Bahr's face.

But Bahr caught the sword with a single index finger. It did little more than leave a papercut in its wake.

"Yours isn't the body I want. You don't need to die for him," Bahr remarked quietly, pushing the blade away from his face and retrieving Dawn's Demise from the abdomen of his opponent. All he got was silence in response.

As it seemed they had made up their minds, Bahr decided that the time for talk was over. If they were to live by silence, they could die in silence. It was only fitting.

Which got him to thinking - were they actually mutes? There was a chance that they simply weren't able to actually talk to him, and that he was basically just being a dick about the whole thing. A possibility, but unlikely. What were the chances that Uso-Tsuki could get his hands on not one, but two mutes, have them both expertly trained, and loyal as dogs? Just seemed unlikely.

Bahr had set his sights on Difendā at this point, seeing him as the weaker of the two. Not in terms of physical strength - just in regards to how much health he had already lost. And, before any of them knew it, he was losing more. Chopped down to a mere third of his original health, in an instant.

If anything was for certain, it was that Bahr was running out of ideas for how to occupy his mind amid the fight. His enemies were elusive, sure, but he didn't feel threatened by either of them in the slightest. Even though one of them had managed to get a hit against him again, it felt like little more than a child lightly poking him with a stick. There was no sense of danger - only a sense of "artificial difficulty" in the sense that it was actually hard, it was just going to take a long time to complete.

There were worse things. But it certainly could have been better. As it stood now, Bahr was wasting colossal quantities of time on this fight. Were they to simply sit still for a moment and accept their fate at the end of Dawn's Demise, this whole thing could have been over several attempted attacks ago. Instead, one of them had two thirds of its health stripped away, and the other hadn't so much as suffered a scratch. In summary, the fight was annoying, and Bahr wanted it to be over so he could move on to the main bad guy, then to the twenty second floor for his dungeon run.

Earlier, at the beginning of the skirmish, Purotekutā had done something interesting. He had Parried one of Bahr's strikes with enough efficiency to block all of the damage from Bahr's attack. Well, it seemed that that ability was on a timer of some sort, because he had just managed to do it a second time. His blade caught Bahr's, negating even a Fallen boosted strike, and sent Bahr skittering backward. No progress had been made, and yet again Bahr was struck with the feeling that he was wasting an enormous amount of time on these goons. They weren't particularly strong, but they were just annoying enough that Bahr was struggling to put them down so he could pursue the main prize. It seemed that they were fairly adequate at their jobs as bodyguards.

Annoyed, but filled with subtle admiration, Bahr straightened his back and wound up his arm. He needed to end this little spat before they deployed another special parry and delayed things even further.

This time, when Bahr lurched forward and brought Dawn's Demise against the goods standing before him, he was actually focused. A boot stamped forward and anchored his position as he carefully glided the blade the exact trajectory he needed to land a clean hit. It slithered around their weapons as they attempted to stop it, unable to accommodate Bahr's new strategy. He'd seen how they reacted, and studied their AI in these last bouts. This time, he predicted how they would react - and managed to get it right the first try.

Still, neither had died. But it was now clear that Bahr was making some actual progress as opposed to spinning his wheels. A couple more good hits like that, and he'd be rid of these fools for good. Then it was just one more man, then onto the dungeon. That was all provided there wouldn't be any additional unforeseen obstacles placed in Bahr's path on his way there.

Apparently, the fact that Bahr had managed to strike both of them at the same moment was a stroke of pure luck, despite his best efforts to enact it based on his own skill. It was the only instance where he'd actually managed to strike them both. Especially considering that he was buffed to the teeth at the moment, he was hard pressed to find a reason to believe they should still be alive. It was almost as though Cardinal had decided to fuck him in the ass with a sandpaper dildo. Another miss? Really? How was that even possible with an accuracy rating of five? Who the hell knew. All Bahr was certain of was that, at this point, he was pissed.

"This is literally going nowhere for the two of you," he hissed. "Submit and either stand down, or die like the dogs you are. I quite honestly do not have the time to put up with either of you any longer. I need to be on my way."

Since Bahr's proverbial 'rage mode' had decided to activate, he realized that there was actually very little that these feeble pawns could do before the might of his equipment and stats. In a blink he was behind them, gouging their spines out with the slightly hooked tip on Dawn's Demise in a single mighty swoop. As their skeletal systems snapped from their innards to their outards, they both simultaneously evaporated into clouds of polygonal azure fractals that flittered and fluttered all the way to Fuck Yousville, the oblivion that Bahr sent the particularly annoying mobs to.

May they rest in peace with the god of annoying mobs himself, Swine Jesus.

With them out of the way, Bahr was finally cleared to fulfill his destiny and take down one more annoying doofus. Just one more. That, according to the quest info, ignored accuracy. Oh. Fucking. Joy. How fun. This couldn't possible go wrong in any conceivable way.

He didn't have any time to lose. How long had he been fighting those guys? An hour? Two? Three years? Any were possible. The fact that he hadn't grown a beard while waiting for them to bite the dust was nothing short of a Christmas miracle - and it wasn't even Halloween yet. This confirmed Bahr's suspicions that he had indeed been a good boy that year. Papa Fat Red Man was looking down from him on high. Lord knows Wuotan wasn't. Fucking prick.

Dawn's Demise flashed with a golden light as he activated Parry and set off down the trail. It was almost futile to run, but he was doing it anyways. The bastard could have ran off in any number of directions by now. He could be halfway to the Halloween Dungeon by now. Hell, he could be done with the Halloween Dungeon by now. Knowing Bahr's luck, he'd run into the guy after having just gleaned a fresh demonic from the cave of wonders only moments prior.

In what can only be described as a monumental display of big dick energy, Bahr located the infidel near instantly and tackled him out of the bushes, sitting on his face as he drove the tip of Dawn's Demise deep into the man's stomach.

"Do you have any idea how annoying that was!?" Bahr questioned incredulously. "What the hell was that!? They sucked! How the hell did they avoid death for so long? Tell me. Tell me!" Uso-Tsuki's shouts and screams as Bahr twisted the blade in his abdomen were muffled through the fabric hugging Bahr's ass. As though suddenly remembering that the dude couldn't talk with a face full of booty, Bahr finally stood and retrieved his place from the man's intenstines.

"I mean, seriously. I get that they're bodyguards and all of that, but that was starting to get to a point where it didn't make any sense narratively. I mean, come on. Taking one damage at a time any time they hit me? What kind of a story is that? There was literally no way to make it compelling."

Sensing that his next attack wouldn't find its mark anyway, Bahr simply placed a hand against his hip and continued with his monologue as Uso-Tsuki stared owl-eyed at him.

"The thing about it is that it isn't difficult, it's just annoying. That's bad game design. Artificially inflating the perception of difficulty by extending the length of time a task takes has been a problem in the gaming industry for decades. Decades! But do we learn from our mistakes? No. Time after time after time, people write missions or quests or what have you with artificial time extenders, then actually think to themselves, 'Huh, guess that looks good.' It doesn't look good. And what's worse is that jackasses fall for it every time. 'Oh man, that New Final Fantasy game was so hard, bro.' Not it fucking wasn't, 'bro.' It just took you a thousand hours to complete it, so you've conflated the difficulty of sitting still and remaining interested in a singular thing for that long with actual difficulty."

Uso-Tsuki didn't seem to be following along very well. It was actually a little strange that he'd sat through the whole rant. How was an entity like Uso motherfucking Tsuki supposed to get it? He was a part of the problem.

"If you want to make a game hard," Bahr continued as he ripped Dawn's Demise across Uso-Tsuki's chest. "Make hard enemies. It isn't that difficult. I've fought plenty of them. You want to know something kind of fucked up, actually? Killing you and your little goons gives me more skill points than killing the Forgotten Time King. The hardest quest boss in all the land. You give me more than him! And why? Because you're super fucking annoying to kill? I mean, give me a break."

Uso-Tsuki, understandably, was horrified. Bahr, also understandably, at least to himself, was furious. The dichotomy was fierce. On the one hand, a rube that was a single good attack away from death. On the other, a slightly less rube-y rube, who felt the need to shout out game design flaws in the middle of quests.

It seemed that, in this case, rage would be the ticket to dispatching Bahr's target. Unlike the two bodyguards before him, Uso-Tsuki was basically a gigantic pushover. Without even realizing it at first, Bahr had delivered the finishing blow to the man before he could get in so much as a single counter attack. It wasn't until he saw the pixelated mist that he understood he'd defeated the man.

With his quest apparently finished, Bahr returned to the settlement and brought proof of Uso-Tsuki's death to the Chief. As promised, Bahr was rewarded with Skill Points, col, and a unique weapon. Something that Bahr previously wouldn't have thought twice about, he now saw as a near perfect weapon. Absolute Accuracy? Something he could definitely stand to use when it came to foes like the goons he'd slain earlier. Had he had Absolute Accuracy at the time, he was certain he would have had a much easier time dispatching them.

With his work on the twenty fourth floor complete, there wasn't much left to do other than head directly to the twenty second floor to attend the dungeon he'd been planning to tackle since the beginning of the day. So he headed to the teleportation plaza, shouted his command at the gate, and was whisked away in a grandiose ribbon of light.

FLOOR 22

One discombobulating journey later, and Bahr's frame was pieced together on the twenty second floor. He had a dungeon map in his position and ready to go. Parry was still active. All of the pieces were in place -  the only thing that remained was to make the trek out to the fabled site. So he opened the map and began to follow the line it traced outside of the settlement and into the wild plains beyond. In just a short while, he would be doing what he actually wanted to do with his time. Things were, for the first time that day, actually looking up.

And as luck would have it, the floor seemed particularly peaceful and docile that day. It didn't seem as though he would need to worry about bumping into any unwanted mobs on his way to the dungeon entrance. Still, he kept a wary eye out for any potential nymph ambushes. Lord knew those bastards had it in for him after his multiple clearings of their villages - provided they had any sort of inclination or sense as to the fate of their ancestors. Probably not, but it was always worth staying on his toes when in hostile territory. Didn't want any vermin catching him with his pants down.

Once he'd located the entrance, he took the time to reconfigure his mods a bit. Reveal no longer served any purpose, and he had a feeling that Hyperactive had the potential to come in handy in there if he ended up running low on energy against the main boss.

Searching Mod: Reveal deactivated.
Energize Mod: Hyperactive activated.
Energy fully restored.

Upon walking into the dungeon, Bahr realized that he recognized the scent - or, rather, stench - that emanated from within. As he rounded the first corner and came face to face with the first wave of monster defending the grounds, his suspicions were proven correct. It turned out that the nymphs did indeed have it out for him - so much, in fact, that they had gone as far as to create a dungeon with even more powerful nymphs inside and lure him to it. Dastardly, really. But, also, smarter than Bahr had given them credit for.

That is, if this wasn't all just a fluke. Could be. But the first scenario was more entertaining, so Bahr was running with it.

He attacked them. They attacked him. In the end, the trade favored Bahr, with them having lost significant portions of their health, and he having lost only a minuscule amount in comparison. Sad for them, really.

At any rate, it did seem as though these nymphs were a lot more capable than the ones that Bahr usually slayed when he was outside. Not really that surprising, but he seemed to recall going through an entire village of the things only a couple of days ago and not taking a single hit in the process. Like shooting fish in a barrel, he likened it to. These nymphs were far more organized and tenacious, and had already landed their second hit on Bahr. He wasn't particularly annoyed by this - quite the opposite, really. At least ne knew that, by the time he was done, he'd feel as though he'd accomplished something. Or... something like that.

Their attack didn't go without punishment, though. Bahr unleashed an unholy counter attack that killed one, mortally wounded two others, and finally hit the one that had eluded his first attack. Damn, how low were the ones he almost killed? He couldn't even see the remaining red sliver.

Yeah, these ones were definitely more ornery. If Bahr was counting right, they had managed to hit him at least once for every attack he dished back. It still wasn't getting dicey, but even with his speed he was finding it difficult to avoid the incoming damage. But Bahr's philosophy had always been that if you have so many enemies surrounding you that you can't possibly go on without getting hit, the best course of action was to brute force your way through them and sheer off some of their numbers to give yourself a better shot. So, that's exactly what he did.

Two more down.

His most recent attack had caught the attention of one particularly slow nymph that had been hovering in the corner, apparently having not been drawn into Bahr's aggro despite being in plain sight. Fun MMO logic. Either way, it seemed to be the last one in the chamber, so once he killed the remaining three he would be on his way to the next challenge.
