<<Dragon Hunter Anthology - Dragon Hunt 8: the Sapphire Hatchling>>

It had been around a day or two since they called it enough in one day's effort. Of course, that meant two things. First of all, Grimm would have all of his gear to be a suitable tier two player- secondly, that meant they had enough time to take down the castle too while they were at it and nab that weapon waiting for them at the very end. They were only two gemstones away, and nothing else came to mind while Chase slowly worked on his message to invite his companion over.

ChaseR: Word's you got your gear. Raedy to roll?
ChaseR: Meet me at the 8th.

And with that, the bluehead made his way over and waited. All he'd gotten since they last went together was a single level and nothing else. His gear was the same and his skills relatively so. He'd picked one up that he thought could be used to help 'mentor' Grimm in a sense, but it's nothing that he wouldn't get the hang of any better himself. And with that, Chase now waited at the settlement of the eighth, fixing his overcoat on his figure and pulling it back to fit both hands in his jacket's pockets as per usual.

Ozwald had gotten his gear from his guild fairly easily, they provided free gear to anyone within the guild, which to Ozwald seemed like a bad business strategy, but he wasn't a guild leader so how would he know. Ozwald's new armor was different from his old pair, but it was the same general premise, it was light and easy to move in, making it perfect for both the stealthy build he was going for and the high movement requirements of his sword arts.

Ozwald received the message from Chase, and he eyed the mask that was sitting in his inventory, he had decided that he would only where the mask when he was alone, or around Are so as to avoid people knowing it was him. Ozwald made his way from his fourth floor home that he shared with his dearly beloved Valentine, and teleported to the eighth where Chase was waiting for him. "Hello, I see you are as ready as ever." Ozwald greeted the man that he had not seen in a few days.

And hearing Ozwald's voice, the boy turned his head to see him in his new armor. It looked similar but different- just like Chase's two sets, the tier one and tier two. The third tier was more so out of his comfort zone but he never got to even use it in the first place, so it'd go unused for a long while. A long one at that, given what the future seemed to be holding for him and everybody else in Aincrad.

342375758_ChaseDBPHappy.png.0a4d2916d805eb91a3fba3e3e916b89a.png"Mhm. Off we go, no dillydallying.", he told him and almost immediately began to head right out of the settlement, signalling him to follow behind. "This one's said to be in some lake. Good job with the looks though.", he proceeded to compliment his new attire and weapon, giving him a genuine smile before turning back to the path that they had ahead of themselves. The walking wasn't as much as the careful treading they'd have to make, but all would be fine. It was a new day, and a new time. Time to kick some dragon tail and nab their gems, but regardless. "Did the guild make you your gear? Cause that's one thing they do great."

"Yeah, perks of being in a guild, the free loot." Ozwald joked with his blue haired companion. It was nice to be back with the man, although they didn't know each other that well, Chase was the first person who Ozwald could call a friend in this world, so working with him was always a treat. "In a lake? Is it some kind of water dragon then?" Ozwald was curious because so far it seemed that the dragon's sort of fit the elements like one was wind, one was earth, another sand and so on. Ozwald didn't know how long they would have to walk for, but he was fine with it, he had spent two days doing nothing other than waiting for his gear to be approved and made by the guild, so it was good finally getting out.

"The eighth dragon, we are getting really close. Makes me think what is going to be at the end of this journey." Ozwald commented. Ozwald was hoping that the castle on the tenth floor lived up to expectations, with how much hype it was getting it would be more than sad if it just turned out to be another dime a dozen boss.

Otherwise, it'd have little reason to be in the lake unless it was related with ice, in a way. "Seems that way. It'd be funny if it was in a lake so small it's essentially a puddle, wouldn't it be? Since it's a hatchling and all, I don't doubt it could fit in one.", he chuckled to himself, trying to imagine the poor thing crawling out of a tiny puddle- given in his mind, it was just as big as a pup at most. "We won't have to wait much longer to find out at this pace, you know.", he nodded to Grimm's question about what awaited them in the end, unsure how they would fare against the final quest- although he had no worries and that much, one could even tell just by looking at him for two seconds. With them walking down a path quietly, things seemed to be back at their relaxing, ordinary pace. "... Whatcha been up to while getting the gear? You took a day or two anyways."

Ozwald wasn't upset that Chase was joking around even in the slightest, it was rare to see his friend have a face of anything other than disinterest or blankness is a better term. "Yeah, imagine it trying to submerge itself, its wings still out of the water." Ozwald laughed at the thought of the small dragon trying to call a puddle its home. "Oh, it took a while for the guild to process my order, in the meantime I had some quality time with Valentine." Ozwald blushed at the latter half of his sentence, the quality time was a little less than family friendly after all, but Chase didn't know that.

The pair were just casually walking along a windy path that seemed to never end, but that was fine with Ozwald, he enjoyed the downtime between fights more than he cared to admit. The fighting in Aincrad was a huge part of the game, but walking around and just enjoying the scenery was a very nice distraction from the fact that this game was a trap.

Chase wasn't really expecting anything romantic between Grimm and Valentine if anyone, so the way that it was worded and seeing his giddy reaction made him just cringe slightly awkwardly at the thought. He looked up at the sky again and cocked up an eyebrow, crossing his arms and giving a quick glance over his shoulder at Ozwald.

232335583_ChaseDBPEyebrow.png.452b97dfdd2af37a9048da9465a851dc.png"You mean Valentine, the white haired rich kid?", he asked the martial artist in an attempt to make sure they were talking about the same person, before deciding that it'd be best to leave it at that and not pry any further in what sort of family time. "You didn't level at all?", he continued to ask. And here's when it became most obvious that since being in Aincrad, Chase's mind was on a single track. It's not that he didn't want to take any time off, but until he was the strongest player out there, there was little he could really 'do' to rest. Right now, he was slowly getting there but still a few ways off. It shouldn't take long though- with the help of Grimm, Alkor and the others, he'd make it. Step by step, just like Grimm's path to the third tier for his own personal reasons.

"Yeah, we just moved in together, that took up the majority of the time I had waiting for the gear." Ozwald wasn't lying he had just moved in with Valentine, into an estate on the snowy fourth floor. "I trained a bit, when I had the free time, but no I didn't do any leveling at all." Ozwald explained to Chase. Ozwald knew that Chase was someone who worked himself until he reached his goals without taking a single break, but that wasn't the kind of person Ozwald was, he would strive for his goals, but he would take the time to relax along the way. Thus far Ozwald had kept up a fairly good pace when it came to leveling, it had barely been more than a month since he had started at level 1, but now he was already at level 25 so to him it was a job well done.

"If this dragon is a water dragon, will we have to fight it while in the lake?" Ozwald asked the man beside him, he knew he wouldn't know the answer, but it was nice to hear his opinion on the matter at hand.

Last time that a lake was involved alongside the boss monster, that being the shocking stallion awaiting at the end of the scents of the wilds questline, he remembered water being there- but it kept running off of it. With that in consideration, Chase just shook his head in response.

920182956_ChaseDBPDefault.png.c8cefaa67ef195620276600d50aea0cf.png"No, no water involved. It might withdraw in the water to heal up or try and lure one of us in, but nothing else. I don't think there's any fights that really involved fighting in the water.", he finished his thoughts of, remembering Moretsuna, the King of Lakes and even the swordfish. All monsters came out of the water, but none demanded for combat in their own home area. Not to say some of the aforementioned wouldn't try to pull you in the waters, but at least you didn't have to willingly jump in and hope for the best with all the extra weight. "Anyways, uhuh, I see. So you're housemates. I tried that once but it didn't work for me, so now I've an estate to myself.", he mentioned silently and looked at the ground with conflicted feelings inside of him, nodding to himself slowly. "You won't quest with Valentine any? To level you both up. He was weak last we met- and he made a dumb decision."

"Oh no, we have quested together plenty of times. Just all of it was before we started living together." Ozwald explained how Valentine and him had done quests together on numerous occasions not mentioning that most off them had started out as dates that just turned into quests. Ozwald was glad to hear that he wouldn't have to fight in the water, while that might be a neat mechanic, it was definitely a lot harder than fighting on land.

Ozwald and present company kept walking, they were getting closer and closer to the eighth dragon with each and every step that they took. Soon enough they would come upon the lake that the dragon was said to be hiding, or a puddle if Chase was right. Ozwald was paying attention to their surroundings, a few of the dragons had had other creature's nearby to help keep players away, and this one might be no different.

And continuing to go down the same straightforward path, it wasn't long before they all appeared to stand out of some ruins, which were halfway submerged into the small lake stretching out before them. The lake wasn't too apparent due to how low it was in comparison to the path, but the ruins just didn't seem to stick out as much. Chase knew though.

607253638_ChaseDBPGlare(New).png.42676f718941726b493fb0647afa96db.png"Something is further up ahead. Watch out.", he warned Ozwald and slowly unsheathed his own sword, glaring right at the waters as he saw ripples start forming on the lake's very surface. And before even half a minute had passed, the hatchling jumped right out with a hiss, stretching its wings and making its way over to the duo by gliding along. Despite Chase's attempts to bring it down to the ground with a quick slash from his broken blade though, the hatchling maneuvered to the side and remained airborne, clawing right at him and getting a clean hit. However menacing it might seem though, his health barely even moved. And it wouldn't be until the a few seconds later that it would fully heal right back up, getting an annoyed glare from the blueberry. "It tried to ambush us this time, too."

Ozwald had seen Chase hit the dragon, but it seemed that when it dived into the water, it healed some of the damage that the dragon had taken. "Yeah that seems to be a trend, but they rarely succeed." Ozwald joked with the man. Ozwald used his fists as a weapon so he was always at the ready to jump into combat. This time was no different Ozwald jumped into the fray landing before the water dragon that was currently on land ready to attack Chase again. Ozwald wouldn't let the dragon get an attack in on Chase at least not right now. Bringing his fist around in a mean right hook, the claws attached to Ozwald's gloves caught on the dragon's face, tearing away flesh and causing blood to pour from its face. Roaring the dragon launched itself into the air ready to dive at the men any time.

With the punch from Grimm's new gauntlets, the dragon's health dropped a fair bit and it even seemed to be bleeding, an effect that after having used his frozen blade for weeks on end, he'd grown to know all too well by this point. It was good though, to see him deal this much damage right off the bat.

268405034_ChaseDBPHappy.png.7736a561b2c5a5a14dfc5608816aaa50.png"Even for your level, you're dishing out a lot of damage. Katana users do pretty much the same, y'know?", he asked and casually threw a swing at the monster, moving his hand back close to himself to guard. Before he even had enough time to do that though, the hatchling's stinking breath attack was back to pester him even more. With highly pressurized water flying right at him, he tanked a bit and just glared at it, letting out a groan and looking at Grimm before checking its health once more. It was probably low enough to get taken down with the next hit, but... maybe not. Regardless, it was time to beat it down even further! "All yours if you can finish it off."

"I don't think I can kill it, I think I am only slightly off of its health." Ozwald told Chase his opinion on the matter, and he wasn't wrong the dragon had only a few hit points over Ozwald's max possible damage against it. Despite knowing that he would not be able to kill it Ozwald still went in for an attack, once again raking the claws of his weapon against the dragon's head causing the bleed to restart, but not stack. The damage that Ozwald did was indeed, not enough to kill the dragon, though it would die from the bleed if Chase didn't attack the beast. "Well just finish it off, the loot isn't that good." Ozwald told the blue haired compatriot before him to just kill the creature, it didn't drop that much Col, and he could get unidentified from other creatures. This would be the end of the eighth dragon, they only needed one more dragon to get to the castle, it was finally all coming together.

With the loot just being shrugged off like that, Chase raised his sword in the air to strike the beast down, only keeping it there though as if he was posing. He quietly began to lower it once more, seeing the dragon ready for another attack with only a sliver of its health left. He knew that wouldn't be long before-

382192784_ChaseDBPDefault.png.03ac148af7325f4d75515ba21ed6751b.png"Beep.", he said in unison with Cardinal and the monster shattered into beautiful, blue shards, disappearing into thin air before he turned over to his friend with a small gemstone in his hand. This time, it had appeared out of nowhere and vanished as the quest reward window showed up before both of them. "Good job. You did most of the work with this one, you know. Let's get moving. Last one is on the ninth floor, which is an actual hellscape. Volcano, high temperature, all that good stuff. Think you can handle it?", he asked Ozwald with a small grin, tilting his head.

"Of course I can handle it." Ozwald affirmed to Chase before turning to face the way they had came from. "These quests have way too much walking involved in them." Ozwald liked the quests a decent amount, it was an interesting concept, even if the fights were very similar. Ozwald took the lead in returning to the eighth floor's main settlement walking down the dirt road that would lead the pair there. "Only one more, and then it is just the castle." Ozwald was mostly just commenting to himself, but he wanted to hear what Chase had to say about them being so close to the end goal of their adventure, they were practically there and it was exciting. Ozwald was hoping that the castle was worth the effort that they had put into getting all of the gems that were necessary for opening the castle on the tenth floor.

With both his hands thrown behind his head, Chase just nodded and thought back to all the quests. What Ozwald had said was true, but that wasn't so much to do with the quests as to do with their simplicity. It was to move from one spot to another, kill whatever mob laid about there and then move on to the next. There was little story and no NPC interaction necessary.

2028759584_ChaseDBPGuiltySilent.png.9fc01ea5f004df1a57d4cb80a714a85b.pngNot that Chase knew about game design all that well to judge it, but from the way he saw it, even something as lame as this was entertaining to him. This was still his very first game after all, so walking or no walking, any quest was really welcome so long as it didn't involve something tedious or outlandish like the one with the giant water snake or the colossus one. "Well, walking or no walking, I want to hate these quests but it's still very fun... Seeing realistic dragons and everything spices it all up? And I'm still excited about the castle, even if it's been a whole day since we started these and it still feels like there's almost no end to them. We've basically finished it all. It was nice to go back through the floors too, even if the original intent was to do them when you got started, right?"

"Oh I completely agree, it isn't like the walking is a dealbreaker per say I just wish that the quest could have the same layout, but less walking. The castle is what makes this all worth it in my opinion." Ozwald was fine with everything that this quest had to offer so long as the castle was a nice culmination of everything they had worked for. Ozwald would be a lot less happy with doing these quests if the castle two floors away had something in it that was worth the work. "It has been nice seeing a brief preview of all of the floors. Although I am going to have to turn around and just go back to do all of the quests that i haven't been able to do just yet." Ozwald was honestly pleased with all of the floors so far, they were all incredibly beautiful, and in the VR setting that sword art online was in, it was all that much greater.

The plan that Ozwald seemed to have laid out for himself was great- doing all the quests according to each floor. However, he did have to make sure that he wouldn't make the same mistake that Valentine seemed to have made, taking on a high level quest just because it was over in the second floor.

There's some on the second that are incredibly deadly, and some that are on the fifth for way higher levels. Be careful about how you do them and take your time, alright? Just check them and if you feel like you can solo them, do them then. Otherwise, doing them in order won't help you any at all.", he tried to elaborate as much as he could, scratching the back of his head awkwardly with doubts that he had managed to get the importance of his point across to the younger man. "There's one with the Queen Bee called 'return of the queen' or something around those lines, and then there's another with 'bloodstained lands' on the fifth. Avoid those until you're around level fifty at all costs. And do them with me only, if I tell you you're ready. Okay?"

"Don't worry I have been paying attention to all of the quests that I have been taking on, alone or with other people,I know my own abilities and where I can't win a fight." Ozwald smiled warmly, it was nice to see that the man cared about him enough to be worried, the younger man having his back was really nice, especially with how much higher level he was than Ozwald. "On to the ninth." Ozwald said before once again continuing back to the settlement on the ninth floor.

Ozwald and Chase walked all the way back in less than an hour, finally arriving at the place where the teleport gate could be found. Ozwald called out the ninth floor, teleporting himself there in order to slay the dragon that made its home there. The blue light faded away, and the pair prepared to slay the final dragon on this new floor.
