Apparently, even Montjoy was stunned at the revelation.  It was a nice bit of attention to detail that Cardinal didn't usually get right, but Freyd appreciated the quality of the coding that was required.  Fate would also hardly be distracted, as another series of slashed carved deep tangerine ruts into the surface of its torso.  Flailing madly in his attempts to defend himself, the foreman fell back, impaling himself on some of the very cargo he had sought to smuggle.

Righting himself, several smaller blades were still stuck and poking out from his back while he wobbled, struggling to steady himself.  Freyd stopped for a moment, trying to assess whether the mob's health was actually stabilizing or still dropping.

Maybe we should put him out of his misery?

Yeah.  That seems the decent thing.

A swift stroke was all that was required.  Death was quick.  Feldermann's organization had grown, if his reach extended to floor 13.  Freyd didn't appreciate having a new neighbour, especially of this sort.  He'd chosen this floor for the quiet and the isolation.  It might be time to 'politely' suggest that they ship their merchandise elsewhere.  Profits could suffer such unexpected fluctuations near Angel's Point.  The ghosts of the dead still lingered in the mists, according to local legend.  Freyd was quite content to play upon superstitious folklore, if it achieved his goals.  Most of the goons here were already dead.  He just needed to clear out the boss, then make sure that the goods were shipped elsewhere.  This place would cease to exist by morning.  A quick scan of the depot was all he needed to assess the likely locations of the boss.  These types tended to follow the same patterns.

This place must have once fed a much larger settlement.  The scale of the buildings was far too large and there were too many of them to possibly be needed to support Coral.  Thoughts drifted to the many shuttered homes and empty streets in the City.  Little was left of whatever grandeur once presented itself in the storied past of this place.  Other than the market, not much remained of the town, and its occupants were little more than sheltered refugees squatting in the abandoned homes of the fallen.

Resolve built in his mind.  It would take time, but Freyd wanted to see this place restored, or at least the lives of the local NPCs improved.  Glancing at the ghostly white fog drifting slowly across the ground all around him, he had to admit that it would be unavoidably have to be filed under 'long term goals.'  There was no time remaining, at the moment.

That's the one.

Agreed.

One of the barn buildings had been partially restored and even fortified, likely to keep the local creeps out.  Feldermann's crew would have planned to bunker down in there, if things for too hot out in the open.  Things had, but no opportunity was afforded them to retreat to their redoubt.  There was no way to be sure how many might still be inside, save a bit of recon.  

Freyd and Montjoy seemed to fold into each other as they approached the bunker-barn, melding so perfectly that Cardinal himself struggled to detect them.  Finding easy entry through an unsecured access to the loft, they crept inside and found the place overflowing with goods and materials of every kind.  A single figure stood in the centre of the lower level, complaining loudly about the slow pace of progress of his now-deceased compatriots.  Little did he know that he would soon be joining them.

Slinking like the dark, Freyd's cloaked, shadowy form split into three distinct figures, two darting off the to the sides while the third perched itself on a heavy timber beam directly over the boss.  Their timing was innately synchronized.  Just as they divided simultaneously, so did they recombine.  Falling upon their foe from three sides at once, the smuggler boss had no idea what was happening or how to defend himself.  His cudgel swung wide and smashed harmlessly against a nearby timber post.

"Rats!  Rats in my barn!!!  Get out, little rats, or I'll kick you out!"

Feldermann really knows how to hire the best and brightest, doesn't he?

Truly.

Slipping under the man's overextended swing, Freyd's blade bit deep even as he slipped back into the natural darkness of the interior.  His foe tossed tables aside to make more room for fighting.

Bad move.  That just gives me more space to stab at you.

The path foolishly having been cleared by the mob itself, Freyd seized on the newly minted opening and charged it head on.  Sword blazing white hot with righteous wrath, Freyd severed the mob's cudgel and left a deep gash across the smuggler's chest for good measure, sending him sprawling backwards into a stack of neatly stacked crates.  Wood and splinters flew everywhere as boxes broke beneath his bulk and shards of broken pottery stuck from him from behind as he shattered their contents.

"Tell your boss to reconsider his choice of location and you can live."  The black blade pressed itself against the burly man's throat, his chest still gasping from surprise and the sudden loss of breath.  "You won't get another chance, and acting like some heroic moron will only guarantee your demise."  The leather in his gloves creaked to emphasis the presence of his sword and imminence of his spoken threat.

"If you think that I would even consider that an option, then you've never met my boss."  Throwing what remained of his cudgel at Freyd, the burly smuggler hopped back to his feet and grabbed a nearby pitchfork to resume their melee.

"What could possibly have made you want to consider this place as a viable waypoint?"  Freyd had been wondering about that for awhile.   Did they think that there was some kind of power vacuum in the wake of the Spire's attack on Coral and the Lake of Reflections?  Given how vociferously players in the game had rallied to the town's defense, it seemed foolhardy to risk anything that might raise their collective ire.

"Some people just aren't good at weighing the risks, I guess."

"Hah!  You can talk, mate.  You have no idea what he'll do to you when I string you up."

Freyd wasn't particularly convinced that it was going to be a problem.

Moving swiftly, Freyd dodged a stab from the man's implement and caught the haft just behind the forks with the cross guard of his weapon.  Trailing a font of shadows, he jammed the man's weapon pulling him forward and off balance, while he pivoted himself on the spot.  The result was a face forced forward meeting the pommel of an angry black blade moving in the opposite direction, and made a particularly agreeable crunching noise when the two connected.  Dropping his weapon, again, the smuggler brought his hands to his face and exposing himself to another series of swings and cuts that bled his health down deep into the yellow range.

Scrambling back towards the far end of the bar, wild desperation flooded the man's expression as he grabbed a pair of nearby lanterns and flung them towards Freyd.  Easily dodged, they crashed and spilled their fuel and flames on the assortment of flammable goods beyond trapping both men behind a quickly growing blaze.

Out of other options, the crazed smuggler came at him with bare fists.  Freyd's parries cut deep into the man's arms leaving him in even worse shape.

"That was probably about the worst idea you've had all night.  Now, come with me and I'll get you out of here, or I can put you out of your misery and think nothing more of it.  The choice is yours."

Judging by the twitching, bloodshot eyes that looked back at him, the mob didn't reckon that there was any option.  Flinging another batch of debris towards Freyd like some paltry form of chaff, he made a break for the loft access stairs seeking to escape.  Freyd battered away the pesky refuse, then gave chase moving far faster than his injured foe.

The fire spread quickly beneath them, consuming everything it touched and leaping across the overflowing contents racing to beat them both to the exits.

Legs pumping as fast as they could beneath him, Freyd felt the tension growing in the blade in his hands.  The smuggler boss was mere steps ahead of his, bumbling and stumbling into everything.  Perhaps he hoped that leaving a debris field in his wake would slow the pursuit.  A black knife's edge protruding from his chest put a sudden stop to those ambitions, even as the integrity of his form began to fail.

With flames spreading equally fast behind and below, there was no time to wait.  Freyd pushed through the man's disintegrating body, blade first, and leapt from the loft lift window to get clear of the inferno building up behind him.  Tucking and tumbling, he was back on his feet an instant later, clear of the blaze and imminent danger, or so he thought.

"Thanks, Chum.  You did us a favor clearing those fools out of this place.  It's a shame that the contents of the barn went up too.  We might have to take that cut out of your hide."

Four figures moved out of the shadows, blades drawn.  Somehow, Ali and Cassim had managed to lead him into the middle of a gang war.  Freyd really needed to have a chat with those two.

The cowl shook in disappointment.  Never make enemies of those with whom you have no cause to quarrel, lest they return that gesture a hundredfold.  Why did so many fail to understand such a simple principle?  Perhaps they thought their numbers kept them safe?  Maybe it was sheer bravado, or else Cardinal made them do it?  It didn't matter.  Freyd would have walked away and had been prevented from doing so.  If they were intent on a fight, he'd put them in the grave.  It was inefficient to leave wounded foes around, never knowing when they might resume the brawl.

A flash of darkness exploded outward with bladed edges of void, piercing and slashing at everything within reach.  His would-be assailants fell back in disarray, their health bars cut by half or more in an instant.  Realization dawned on the measure of the enemy they had just made, and the lethal error just committed.

Rushing from the storm cloud burst he'd just spawned, Freyd cut three of the would-be thugs down in the moments that followed, the last dodging fate by a hair's breadth and only thanks to their forced scattering at the outset of the battle.  A flurry of blades followed, threatening to overwhelm the lone survivor.  Freyd would not relent once committed to the fight.  The certainty of doom was plainly visible in the Whisper's eyes, to his assailant.  

The frazzled man struggled to do more than raise his blade and mount a fervent defense of his own neck as a furious maelstrom of light and dark threatened to overwhelm him.  He could barely see the red eyes that pursued him from behind that storm of inbound whirling death.

Choosing survival, the lone opportunist turned tail and fled towards the outskirts, screaming like a little girl as he went.  Freyd followed, assuming that more would be about.  They wouldn't have tried to take this place with a single group of four.

And there they were.  Three others rounded the corner to intercept, even as the original continued to run for dear life, hoofing it with grandiose strides the sent flying bits of muck in all directions.  Some of it splattered on the newcomers who were too confused to discern the threat.  They, too, were soon engulfed by the black maelstrom of blades and fury that followed.

Cries of surprise clashed with the lethal suction of the void as Freyd mowed down opposition before it could be organized.  Sprays of pixels followed injury as the second group shared the first one's fate, losing half their strength and resolve in the first moments of their encounter.  To the Whisper, they were but obstacles to be cast aside while he focused on the one still trying to get away.  One was knocked back into a nearby hay bale while the two others collided with and nearly impaled each other.

They foolishly rose and followed Freyd as he closed the distance to his original quarry, dealing him a nasty gash across the back that sent him sprawling face-first into the soft and fertile soil.  He'd be fertilizing it himself, soon enough.  Following the momentum of the swing around, Freyd clipped his pursuers also, teaching them the follow of the blind chase.  

Moving too quickly, their speed became a liability as they met the mower head on and unable to halt, deflect or dodge the doom before them.  One fell dead, outright, shattering into a sparkling cloud of digital dust while the other two fell to join their companion writhing on the ground.  

Cries of alarm could be heard elsewhere around the compound.  Feldermann's gang must have finally figured out that they were being infiltrated.  This whole place was about to become a battlefield, and here was Freyd caught in the middle of it.

Black smoke billowed from the blaze engulfing the barn.  It had to be visible from Coral, if not the entire floor.  Another rival thug emerged from the nearby wheat field only to watch his three compatriots meet his end by the jab of Freyd's blade.  The Whispers' gaze was cold and detached as he did the deed.  Persi skittered between points of concealment, lashing at any foes foolish enough to ignore her while Montjoy danced about the field confusing Freyd's enemies as to the number and identity of the enemies their faced.  

Chaos reigned while a singular engine of death steadily carved itself a path towards the outskirts, intending nothing but to leave this place.  The two warring factions could sort each other out, for all he cared.  He had what he came for, and no shortage of additional questions to boot.  The more he thought about it, the likelier it seemed that Ali and Cassim were patsies, being played for fools by whoever it was Morgiana actually worked for.  The only question was whether they were friends or foes.

He could see more figures milling about the meadow, crossing the open fields with blades in hand.  This was more than just a mere raid, it was an outright war between rival smugglers and gangs.  The only question was whether they had both been played into this position by a third party, or if one group was simply seizing on the vulnerability of the other.

Freyd pounced upon another group laying in ambush, but their wariness worked to their benefit at well, two of them landing hefty blows against him even as their own health plummeted at the passage of his sword.  The void blade feasted as he struck at his foes, watching as shadows danced in all directions and uncertain of which was what.  Freyd's tactics worked.  They were too confused and disoriented to organize, and fell prey to his methodical attacks in the absence of any organized defense.

A blitz of holy light and void-like pockets exploded in the fields, near the southern limits of the deport, where Freyd decimated the last of his opposition.  Everyone else engaged in combat would have seen it, forcing him to make good his escape as swiftly as possible.  

Dashing into an adjacent corn field, Freyd melded with the stalks and crept onward slower than might be expected.  His curiosity still wondered at the source of this internecine battle, but would find little to sate it.  No one wore uniforms or bore markings of... armbands.  It was easy to overlook, at first, but they had to have something to differentiate them.  Unfortunately, there was no way to retrieve one from the mobs as they vanished upon their deaths.  At least he now knew how to tell one side apart from the other.  Slinking past enemy lines, Freyd found a sheltered spot to rest for a moment before making his final push.

Pausing for a quick breather, he could see a line of sentinels serving as pickets just beyond the edge of the crop bed.  One last push was all that would be required.  Settling down on his knees to catch his breath, Freyd laid the blade on his lap, calming it as much as himself.

Shouts rang out at various distances and intervals around him.  The invaders were beating back Feldermann's battered crews and corralling them in the centre of the remaining structures.  It would be over soon, and then their forces would disperse once more.  If he was going to fight his way out, it would have to be soon.  Watching the motion of the sentries, he gauged the best potential timing.  Stealth might have been an option, but tempting fate would carry a price.  There was also the original insult delivered by these assailants to be considered.  He'd leave them with the same bloody nose they'd intended for him.

Rushing at them from the shadow of the corn field, Freyd burst forth in silence and without warning.  To the assailed, he seemed to flash in and out of existence, striking then gone again, only to reappear on the far side of the group.  Persi flit from foe to foe, rending them from beneath their armor while Montjoy played in the umbra between them to keep them off balance.

The picket was instantly in disarray, their orderly lines shattered and stumbling blind as the sun set on the horizon.  Individual cries rang out for aid, but if all were stammered who was left to help?  Red eyes darted between them all, slicing tendons and piercing vulnerable chinks in armor, picking them apart one action at a time.  It was what he did, and how he survived in a world gone mad.  Turn off the emotions and calculate your way through, regardless of what stands in your way.

Darkness congealed around the Whisper as he worked, as if the very shadows of the world bent to his will and whirled into ever-tightening nooses around the necks of his enemies.  There was no escape.  Persi circled the lot of them while Montjoy kept them guessing as to Freyd's actual position.  He would appear, suddenly, stabbing one, then the next.  Each fell in turn and became dust, until only one remained.

He had the appearance of a young man, with dark hair and eyes.  The former was frazzled and the latter terrified.  Freyd registered only a mob cast in a mold and painted with features mechanically calculated to appear sympathetic.  Where others might have let him live, he pressed his sword to the man's throat.

"Who do you work for?  You'll get one chance to answer.  Whether you are still able to do so depends entirely on your answer."  Red eyes gleamed with determination from beneath his cowl.  What would this one decide?
