Oscar's prior foray into the Black Iron Dungeon had gone off, more or less, without a hitch. He determined very quickly that the enemies encountered in this "Death Dungeon" were only lethal if you ran in without any gear. In truth, it was more annoying than anything else. But, it was also where the gear was. So, after scarfing down a collection of buffs, Oscar set off back to the dungeon. This time, he wasn't accosted at the entrance by the players who had taken it upon themselves to try to protect the noobs from what would probably mean certain death for them. Since his last visit, Oscar had made a point to adjust his skills somewhat to further optimize himself for this particular bit of content. He wasn't vastly different now than he was the first time; he had only made a few small tweaks to make things a little more efficient.

No sooner had he stepped down onto the lowest available floor, the dungeon guardians were upon him. In a flash of golden light, Money Shot was in his hand. As the Black Iron Knights charged his position, wicked claymores poised to perforate his body, Oscar raised his weapon aloft. The head of his massive hammer began to glow a dark violet. With a small spinning flourish, Oscar drove the weapon into the ground, the resulting shockwave sending stone tearing through the Knights' armor like bullets and halting the forward charge of all except one. The lone Knight dealt a pittance in damage - nothing Battle Healing couldn't patch up in the next instant. Oscar pushed the enemy away with his free hand and got some distance. He couldn't have them all up in his grill stopping him from swinging. One of the drawbacks that came with using a heavy weapon like the Warhammer was that he needed room to swing wide. If he didn't have that, it was more difficult to land his attacks.

The Black Iron Knights had begun to rally since Oscar's first attack. But he had no plans of giving them the slightest bit of quarter. Even without Tesseleth's Fury backing him, Oscar was more than capable of dispatching them in short order. Odin's Wrath was unavailable, but he didn't really need it. Having knocked the entire crowd firmly into the yellow, a weaker Sword Art would suffice. So, he readied his weapon and activated Wallbreaker. Rather than strike the enemies directly, Oscar swung hard into a section of wall. The sheer concussive force of his attack caused the wall to crack and splinter, eventually exploding into a storm of razor-sharp stone shards. These shards perforated the enemies and ended them, leaving only the loot behind. He collected his loot, eyes widening in surprise. When had Demonic Shards been added to the drops of basic mobs. He remember the last time he was here that he only got a Dungeon Map. Now he was getting a dungeon map and a shard. Wild. He tossed the map, though. He wasn't interested in running lower-tier content right now and, if he was, he could just go find one himself.

With combat having ramped down, Oscar had a gut feeling that he didn't have long before the Black Iron Dungeon would want to test him. Death or great fortune awaited him, except for some reason it seemed impossible for death to find him. Perhaps it had something to do with his Searching skill being so monumentally high. He had fashioned himself into something of a strong scout since the changes following the Floor 25 Raid. Maybe that was why he hadn't run into any issues so far. Perhaps Scouts had something of an advantage here. Whatever was the cause, the supposed "death dungeon" was less death and more dungeon in that you were forced inside for loot and trapped there for the foreseeable future. He almost missed the days that he warred with the secret Spider Council as they labored to protect the secret of Spider Pockets. Also Oscar scraped some moss off of the wall and got some gathering exp. Yay.

A rush of wind surged through the dark corridor, sending a chill down Oscar's spine. He understood, that in that moment, the Black Iron Dungeon was pondering the exaction of its wrath upon the man foolish enough to enter it. But, fortune favored the Beast of Aincrad. He was spared the dungeon's wrath this time. Seizing this opportunity, Oscar then set about searching for more moss to peel off the walls. He had to wait for his energy to refill, so why not? Eventually, he came across a promising patch. The entire thing seemed to spiderweb over an entire six-foot section of the wall. Carefully and deftly, Oscar busied himself with peeling a useable sample from the patch. Much to his delight, he was successful in the task and found a single material was deposited into his inventory. His eyes flicked up to his energy bar. It would be time to fight again soon.

More Knights appeared from around a nearby corner. Oscar's presence within the dungeon had alerted the denizens of the presence of an intruder, no doubt. Both of his strongest Sword Arts were still on Cooldown, but it didn't matter much. He didn't need to use his two strongest in order to come out ahead in a fight. Oscar dashed forward to meet them, lashing out with Money Shot twice in quick succession. The Knights were dashed this way and that, the sudden shaking disorienting half of the squad. The other half, however, seemed to just wanted it more than their peers. Oscar found himself impaled by two black claymores and pushed against the nearest wall. Despite how bad the damage looked, his health bar barely budged. He merely waited patiently for the system to catch up and allow him to take another action. Still, he couldn't help but feel a small twinge of concern when he looked down and saw the two blades sticking out of his chest.

Pinned to the wall by two swords as he was, one would think Oscar was in a bad way. Certainly, as the Knights recovered and encircled him, the pair holding the weapons pushing them ever deeper into his chest cavity, one would assume this would spell his end. But Oscar was only waiting for them to get closer. The position of the blades inside him reduced his reach. He would need them almost close enough to kiss if he wanted to dispatch them without having to get into a battle of wills with the AI. The Knights stalked ever closer, flanking the pair before him. Oscar smiled as his weapon took on a dark purple glow. He struck the Knight on his right directly in the head. The concussive force exploded out from the Knight, slamming the other three into the walls and wrenching the blades out of his chest in the process. All that remained after was to collect his hard-earned loot.

The dungeon seemed to have a flow brought about both by its own mechanics and the way cooldowns worked. One round of combat, then gather for a bit. It actually wasn't that bad of a situation to be in. He obtained usable loot and also was able to rank up his Gathering skill. The best of both worlds. Still, he couldn't help but pine for the times where he could kill mobs by the dozens without having to think about what the next best action was. Despite that, Oscar really couldn't complain about the extra decompression time within the dungeon. It was hard for it to maintain this foreboding atmosphere when there was long stretches in which nothing appeared and there was nothing to fight. He peeled more moss off of the walls and continued onward, deeper into the bowels of the Black Iron Dungeon. Oscar simply couldn't resist the clarion call of treasures galore.

One drawback from having a lot of downtime was that it was a lot of downtime. You can only look at the same dark stone design for so long before you start to go a little crazy from the sameness. It would be almost unbearable if Oscar wasn't finding himself constantly distracted by the moss on the walls. Sometimes, the moss grew too close to the torches - which meant less moisture in the plant. So, when he attempted to gather it, there was an added challenge given how it crumbled away in large clumps. If too much crumbled, the gathering attempt failed. Just as it did for this current patch of moss Oscar was working on. Even though it ended in abject failure, Oscar still earned a little bit of experience from the attempt. Since he found himself more concerned with the experience than the actual materials, this wound up being an absolute win anyway.

As he traveled deeper into the dungeon, following the veins of moss as he went, Oscar eventually happened upon a side room. He peered inside, hopes not very high in the first place. Since the bar was on the floor already, Oscar wasn't at all disappointed when the room came up empty. Instead, he noticed a particularly promising bit of moss by the entrance and began to work away at it. Being that there was a torch right next to it, his gathering attempted ended in failure. But, more experience and more time killed. His Energy was full now, so he would be ready for the next group of enemies that would inevitably seek him out. If they didn't come to him, he had no problems coming to them either. He was just tired of fighting the same Knights all the damn time. Perhaps the Black Iron Dungeon would provide him with some variety.

Oscar wished and the dungeon provided. Instead of Knights descending upon his location, a quartet of tall, lithe elves shrouded in dark leathers wielding wicked daggers in each hand dashed towards him. Apparently, as he progressed, the enemy types would get more difficult. These "Assassins" as they were called seemed to be keen on getting Oscar out of the dungeon, either by his own will or by his death. Oscar, however, had just been on the receiving end of a double impalement by two claymores, so he wasn't at all concerned with eight tiddly-wink little daggers. Even less concerned when he sent them flying backwards with a single art. Despite their lithe and agile forms, they seemed just as keen to run into his hammer as the Knights. If they even had Evasion, it wouldn't help one whit with that stupid AI they possessed. Better were the days where Sundered Spire plotted the Players' downfall. At least then, they kept things interesting.

Capitalizing on his momentum, Oscar rushed forward to chase down the Assassins that he had just propelled backwards at terminal velocity. He caught up, running between the group as they sailed through the air. He activated Odin's Wrath and slammed them all down to the ground with a wide-sweeping circular arc. Their health bars tanked to zero and they shattered on impact, leaving Oscar with a bunch of free loot to collect. He happily added it all to his inventory and put away his weapon. He found himself more excited to get back to peeling moss than he was to fight. Even though combat was exceptionally rewarding, it wasn't a challenge anymore. Peeling dry moss and trying to preserve enough to use? That was challenging. Or, at least something new. He'd already experienced all that the System had to throw at him, he felt. There was no way that Standard Mobs would even hope to compete with the likes of Skalaugh or the Shadow.

With the enemy Assassins dispatch, Oscar was free to peel moss to his heart's content. After taking a moment to cycle through his menus, Oscar noticed that he was a little over halfway to the next Gathering rank - a prospect that excited him. He'd remembered how much he'd enjoyed ranking up as a Cook and this was just more of that, but with a lot less burnt garlic bread. Finding another patch of moss in short order, Oscar skillfully and quickly pried his prize from the bricks. A material was then added to his inventory and his experience total went up just a bit more. Progress was slow, but it was still progress. Plus, Oscar couldn't remember the last time he'd felt this chill. Oddly enough, this whole dungeon was more of a catharsis than it was anything that posed any real danger to him. It was always good to be able to let off some steam.

It was getting about time. Soon, his energy would be full. When it was, Oscar would then be able to engage more mobs in combat and - with any luck - earn himself some much needed loot. But, until then, his life was that of a moss collector. Collecting moss from the sides of a wall was goal. He soon found another patch and, once there, began to peel the moss away. This patch was in a dark, dank corner. No torches nearby, so it was moist and easier to pull away in one big sheet. And Oscar did just that, earning himself a material and some experience in the process. It wouldn't be long now before he would rank up and then, one would presume, he would be just a bit more effective at gathering materials by peeling moss from the walls. Am I saying "moss" too much in this thread? Probably. Moss.

After walking for a bit, Oscar came across another side room. Just like the other, Oscar found the room to be empty. He was sure that if he set foot inside, the room would probably snap closed and spawn and army of brutes to exterminate him with extreme prejudice nonetheless. However, Oscar was no fool. Also, there was moss on the wall opposite the door. A potential material was infinitely more interesting than an empty, probably trapped chamber. Deft fingers worked the moss free from the wall. Though it was fairly close to one of the many torches that line the walls, it wasn't drier than the Sahara either. He found that the entire strip came free from the wall without much coaxing, adding another easy material to his inventory. He was getting over closer to his immediate goal of Rank 2. And all he could do was thank the various patches of moss for their sacrifice in this endeavor.

Oscar proceeded ever-forward, deeper and deeper into the dungeon. As he rounded a corner, he noticed an odd shimmering in the air about halfway down the new corridor that he had just entered. It was strange. Oscar decided to take a closer look. His Searching skill aided him in overcoming enemy stealth. He focused on the shimmering space, his eyes flashing gold for a brief moment as he made a conscious effort to determine whether the shimmering was due to stealthed enemies. Thanks to his mastery of the skill, the shimmering shifted and a faint outline of the enemies was formed. Without skipping a beat, Oscar charged forward into their midst. The sudden impact of Money Shot backed by a use of the Charge Skill caused the creatures to break stealth. Most of them were slammed into the ground by Oscar's weapon, but one was able to remain upright and slap Oscar across the face with a tentacle.

After having been slapped across the face with a slimy tentacle, Oscar paused for a moment. The creatures looked alien in nature, a long slender body topped with a single large eye and half a dozen whipping tentacles added haphazardly at different locations around its stick-like core. The creature who slapped him blinked. Then Oscar blinked.

"Alright first off. Rude," Oscar began, wiping the purple goo from his cheek. "Second off." Oscar lurched forward, spinning his weapon around his body like a tornado of blunt force trauma. He did his best rendition of a Beyblade before finally hurling all of the Cloakers off into the nearest wall, where they subsequently shattered like glass. Oscar stopped and shuddered, holding Money Shot under his arm as he furiously attempted to clean his cheek of that god-forsaken slime. He swore under his breath and collected his loot before continuing off deeper into the dungeon, content to never speak of that again.

With things being what they were, there was nothing else Oscar could do but wait for his cooldowns and energy to be restored. He absolutely hated being stifled so, but what else could he do? Perhaps the System saw how the Players were running roughshod over Aincrad's normal enemies and decided to throttle back the rate at which they would be exterminated. It would have been a good call, all things considered. That said, it was more than a little annoying. But you know what isn't annoying? Moss. Oscar just couldn't get enough of it. Here he is now, peeling the plant life from the walls with an uncharacteristic speed and precision. Truly a savant among gatherers. Chief among the herbalists. Praise of his skills resounded from the heavens as Oscar claimed for himself two materials in place of one. The heavens opened up and a choir of angels sang in light of this display of skill and fortitude.

If the Heavens sang his praises over his massive success moments prior, the demons of Hell laughed at him in the face of his abject failure now. The moss had been a perfect specimen. Not too moist, not too dry. Yet, even so, he failed at his attempt at gathering. All it had taken was for his hands to slip once and it was game over. But, that wasn't to say that it was a complete loss. Indeed, there was a path to redemption for Oscar. He had ranked up at long last. So let the Devil laugh. Oscar knew that with his newfound rank and his endemic skills, he wouldn't be the butt of Hell's jokes for much longer. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he internally and silently celebrated his incremental progress. Without so much as a word or thought, Oscar continued deeper into the dungeon with pep in his step.

As Oscar busied himself with harvesting yet another patch of moss, he heard a noise from behind him. The sound of stone grinding on stone. The sudden sound surprised him, causing his hand to slip and the gathering attempt failed. When he turned, looking fairly annoyed, he noticed that a section of wall that had been behind him had opened up to reveal a chest room. Only, this time, it actually had a chest in it! This was certainly an interesting discovery. Was the dungeon filled with rooms such as this, only to be revealed by the sheer luck of being at the right place at the right time? It definitely made a ton of sense. The only question that remained was whether this chest was trapped. Even if it was, Oscar decided, he had experienced what would happen if it was trapped and felt confident that he could handle it. It might be an annoying encounter, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
