[F02 - SP] The Mountain's Top <<Breaking the Unbreakable>>

Recommended Posts

The sound of palm slapping boulder reached Nari’s ears, and she felt the familiar sting in her hand as she pulled back her arm. The strike itself had been mediocre at best, but Nari could see a small hairline crack where she had managed to split another piece of the boulder. It wasn’t much progress, but it brought another smile to Nari’s face.

‘One must learn to crawl, before they can fly. And this seems to show me that I’m really starting to crawl.’ Shaking her hand, she walked around the boulder, eyeing it up and trying to determine where next to lay her strike.

Spotting a shiny spot on the far side of the boulder, Nari crossed and brought herself to stand before it. Hands on her hip, she smiled at the boulder, nodding slightly. ‘You.’

Sliding her left foot back and swinging her right shoulder forward, Nari raised her hands again, bringing herself into her ready position. Taking in a deep breath, Nari struck out with her right palm, snapping it forward towards the boulder.

The resounding crack that echoed through the dojo cause Nari to jump. She had put a lot of force behind her strike, but even she was surprised by the effect it had on the boulder – which now sat with a large crack down the centre of it. It wasn’t quite through to the bottom, but it definitely showed a modicum of progress, bringing another burst of enthusiasm and excitement to the small, purple haired woman.

‘Ha! This is it! The final stretch, I can feel it. I just need to stay focused and everything will fall into place. I can do this!’ The smile, wide on her face, showed more than anything else the pride that she felt at her success thus far. She hoped that even if her next strike wasn’t perfect, that the boulder would soon break under her strikes. ‘I’m almost there. I can see the end. Just a little bit longer. Focus!’

Her arm shot forward as she shouted the last word in her mind, noticing only as it struck against the boulder that she had naturally switched back to her left hand.

Another cracking sound ruptured the air as her hand bounced off the boulder. This time the crack seemed to split sideways, not just through the centre, a spiderweb of cracks appearing across the entire surface. Nari’s eyes followed the multiple cracks, disappearing around the side and behind it. Walking around the boulder, Nari could see where they had spiralled all around the outside, a small cluster appearing to have pushed towards the centre of the boulder itself. It was a sure sign of the progress she was making, and it drove her onwards – realising that this damned quest was nearing completion.

‘Even if the reward itself isn’t worth it, the experience alone has taught me so much.’ Drawing back into her stance, her left foot forward and arms raised, Nari glared at the boulder between her the back of her hands. She felt no immediate hatred toward it – nor to this dojo – both simply stood in the way of her current objective, and if need be she would go through both of them to get where she needed to be.

Amazed that she had managed so well already, the faulter of her following strike didn’t surprise Nari. She realised that she had pushed herself to a limit with her rapid strikes, something that she should be proud of having kept up for so long. Stepping back and letting her arms fall for a moment, she took a deep breath, closing her eyes and letting her mind review the previous attempts. She watched in her mind’s eye as her arms had shot forward and connected with the boulder – the precision in her movements with her success, and the faulters in them that had caused her to miss, or failed to break through its hard surface.

Slowly opening her eyes, keeping the focus on that precision, Nari stepped back up to the boulder. Slowly shifted her feet around, balancing her weight so that she was centered, she raised her hands, her left forward, and her right pulled back. Releasing her breath, she paused a moment, before striking out with her left palm, slamming it into the boulder.

The slap of her hand against the boulder shook through her arm, and Nari felt her muscles begin to faulter. Shaking her left arm, the numbness running through it, she realised that repeating the same maneuver would get her no where. She needed to change her method, otherwise she would simply be following a line of madness.

The line of thought brought a smile to her face, the humour behind it not passing over her head. Stifling a giggle, she side stepped around the boulder, bouncing on her heels so as to let her body relax a little bit – forcing the tension that had built up out.

Once she had returned to her original position, she raised her arms once more, her left side forward towards the boulder. Ensuring the tension was completely out of her body, she took a half step forward, pulling back with her arm as she did before driving the left palm into the boulder as hard as she could – hoping that in this case, force and will would allow her palm to do what it had failed to just do before.

‘Right, that didn’t work.’ Nari sneered at the voice in her head. It was being super helpful here, providing her with an update on the obvious. ‘I would say time to switch things up, but…let’s be honest. You’re here to punch a rock. You’re stuck between a rock and…well, a rock. What’s your big smart idea here?’

Sighing, knowing the voice was right, Nari slid around the boulder again, looking for anything that could be defined as a weak spot. Settling on one area that seemed to splinter in many different directions, she readied herself once more. Closing her eyes, she let her arms fall for a moment, settling her mind and pushing everything but her focus on the boulder bursting into shards away.

With the image of the finality in her mind, Nari forced her eyes open, bringing her arms up and pushing out with her left palm to strike once more against the large boulder.

Nari sighed heavily. This was becoming quite repetitive, and not in a good way. She was beginning to feel as though she was stuck in a rut – unable to escape. She knew this quest would be trying, but after the success in the first two trials, she had thought that perhaps – just maybe – she could quickly push through the finality of this whole pain. Yet, here she stood, standing before a large boulder – well cracked and splintered, but not yet destroyed.

Rolling her shoulders, she wondered if she should try something else. Or if the only option was to continue just pounding away at this stupid boulder until finally – whenever that finality came – it simply gave up and shattered.

‘What a stupid quest. Punch a boulder until it breaks. Whoever thought this one up should definitely be poked, hard. With a sharp stick. Or a sword. Or both. Many sharp swords and sticks.’

With no other alternative, Nari stepped forward and smashed her open palm into the boulder again, hoping for more cracks to appear.

‘HA! Take that you stupid pile of…’ The voice in Nari’s head cut off as the boulder gave a large cracking sound. Nari saw the top split open and away – not quite breaking into pieces as was required, but clearly close to that point. Against her will, a smile slipped on her face again as she realised just how close she was. Just a few more strikes, and likely the whole thing would fall apart at her feet, and she could be away from this mountain, and this dojo.

‘And put the thought of this whole experience behind me. I cannot wait for that moment, it will be the greatest moment in my life, I think.’ Nari took one final deep breath before taking her typical stance before the boulder that had made her last few moments such a frustration.

Nari pumped her arms for a few moments, working out the growing tiredness that had begun to settle in her muscles. Once she felt as ready as she could possibly be, she struck out with her left palm – hoping that this would be the last strike she would need.

Nari gave a slight cry of frustration as her palm struck the nearly destroyed boulder, only to bounce off harmlessly. ‘ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME.’

In a futile burst of anger, she kicked at a small rock off to the side, bringing her foot up and down against it a few times before realising that the words ‘IMMORTAL OBJECT’ appeared atop it. Screaming at the room of the dojo, Nari turned to glare at the boulder once more.

‘That’s it! I’ve had enough of you – I’m putting an end to this once and for all.’ Her lips pulled back in a snarl, she stalked back to the boulder, stamping her way across the few steps it took to get there. She glared at it for a moment before pulling her arm up and back. She paused as she realised what she was about to do, releasing the tension in her arm.

‘No, anger is not going to solve this.’ Taking a breath to calm herself, she readied herself once more. Hoping this would end soon, Nari lashed out with her left palm again.
