[F27 - SP] The Winter Fox Assistant Smith | <<Training Your Friend>>

Recommended Posts

Returning to the shop, Nari immediately pulled out a treat for the patient fox. Tossing it, she waited to see if the fox would accept her apology and thanks for taking time to help her with her search. Her curiosity got the better of her as she decided to test something.

Curious as to whether the fox’s luck would continue to pay off, Nari headed over to the anvil, waiting as the little creature finished its food and noticed her movements. Pausing only for the briefest of moments, the fox scuttered up her arm and settled into the same place it had originally sat when she first attempted this.

Nodding to the little critter, Nari lifted the hammer, placing a piece of the materials she still had in her forge on the anvil. Bringing to mind an image of a chain mail piece that she had seen another player wearing not too long ago, Nari brought the hammer down – the impact ringing as it struck the materials, causing them to glow slightly.

She was amazed at the success she was having – did this little fox really make that much of a difference? It was hard to believe, and yet…Nari could see the results right before her eyes.

Nari felt the smile return to her face as her strike rung true. She hard a squeak of agreement from Yuki on her shoulder, and turned to grin at the little fox. Raising her arm again, the fox gave a slight nudge against her arm, and Nari repositioned, adjusting her aim under the little creature’s direction.

‘This is…amazing. The way that we can work together like this. I’m amazed that this is a thing – it could change everything about my ability to work as a blacksmith!” Nari kept grinning as she brought the hammer down, then up again for another strike, watching as the materials glowed brightly.

Just as she was about to strike once more, Yuki suddenly grabbed onto her arm, her teeth pulling at the sleeve of her armour – which she now just realised she had forgotten to remove in her haste to try her work once more.

She continued working, the slight fox content to sit on her shoulder and just watch as the hammer rose and fell, ringing out against the silence of the forge around them. Nari felt herself getting lost in her work, her singular focus driving away everything around her as she was pulled into the action of bringing the hammer up – then down.

Time seemed to pass both slowly and quickly, and it wasn’t long before Nari put aside the piece she had been working on, realising suddenly just how much her arm was hurting from all the exertion. She smiled at Yuki, even though it was painful, she was proud of what she had accomplished here. She’d managed something that in the real world she wouldn’t have been able to do.

‘And let’s not forget that it’s a team effort now, right?’ She reached out and scratched the chin of the fox, trying to show her appreciation to it through the simple movement. She felt the fox purr slightly, an odd sound escaping its throat.

Nari was tempted to pick up the hammer and begin on the next piece, but just staring at it made her arm hurt. Deciding not to over do anything, she headed across to the small workshop table that had become her workplace, eatery, and everything else zone. She let herself lean against it for a while, her mind returning to the day they had had together.

Her thoughts slowly turning back to the houses they had passed during their walk throughout the city. She had the money – thanks to an anonymous donor – to purchase one of them, and maybe enough to upgrade it and make it her own special place…but, she wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do just yet.

“What do you think, Yuki? Do you think we’re ready for home ownership, or should we maybe get settled here first?” Her voice was a soft whisper, as if she didn’t want to disturb the cosy air of the forge around them.

The fox gave no immediate respond to her enquiry, and Nari couldn’t help but think that that in itself was an answer to her question – maybe it was too early to consider something so…finite. If she had a house, that would tie her down – more so than the shop did, at least that had her out doing things like material searching. But a house? That was a whole new league, and one that she wasn’t sure she was quite ready to commit to yet.

“It would be nice though…maybe one day, to settle down, to own a place. Maybe I can have someone…” She felt herself flush as her mind returned to the day not long ago when she had confessed feelings for another. It hadn’t gone anywhere near as well as she had hoped, and she’d been suffering from it every since. It had caused her to turn towards a more solo life, until…

A sudden clang pulled her from her memories, and Nari noticed that Yuki had begun pushing the hammer around, as if signalling a desire to get back to work. Not one to deny the little fox, Nari crossed over to the anvil.

Although her mind had been…preoccupied but a moment ago, Nari forced herself to focus on the task at hand. Her smithing was what she needed to do now – with Yuki. Memories of days gone by wouldn’t help her here, only true engagement in what she was doing.

Bringing up the hammer, she waited with it raised, seeing if the fox would request any adjustments. Instead Yuki simply stared at her, the beady eyes watching, waiting. Nari figured that was a sign that her form was good, and that no correction was needed – at least, not yet.

Trusting in the fox’s judgment, she brought the hammer down, letting it slam into the materials on the anvil in front of her. She raised the hammer again, using the momentum to slam it once more onto the materials, hoping that her form hadn’t changed. She could feel the fox’s eyes watching her as she worked, keeping an eye on her form and movements, as if judging her.

Nari felt herself relish the feeling as the material before her took shape, and she could feel as Yuki on her shoulder dug her tiny little claws into her clothing, clearly feeling the same excitement. Turning to grin at the tiny little fox, Nari placed aside the completed piece before putting the hammer away – properly this time.

‘I think that’s enough for today.’
