[SP-14] Pushing Your Luck <<Cull of the Dead>>

Recommended Posts

Freyd stood on the outskirts of the Red Cloak's encampment, the stalwart figure of their Knight Captain Harkens standing stoically at his side.  The older NPC watched on as the vampiress decimated his men in the valley below, as if he was somehow silently hoping that one of them might pull off a miracle and hold his ground or rally the rest.  It wasn't happening.  Freyd had completed this quest enough times to know that those men were doomed, which was why he had one leg propped up on a soot-covered boulder and a ham sandwich firmly held in his left hand.

"You might want to get in there soon, Harky, or there won't be anything left of your boys to salvage except as spare parts for a b-grade horror flick."  The NPC just grumbled and began his slow, plodding march down through the rocky, decimated landscape.  At least his cloak was billowing epically.  It was a nice touch, only slightly undermined by the sheer number of men he'd lost for his photo op entry.

Bite taken.

It had been too long since Freyd had really allowed himself to cut loose.  The raid in Ladonia seemed like a distant memory now, and he'd been so caught up in personal affairs that he'd been neglecting his own training.  Raising a pair of void-wrapped hands, he was keenly aware of the price that they carried, though he still couldn't help but wonder if another shoe was left to fall.

"Nothing to be done about that now."  He flexed both hands into fists, causing the thinnest of holy seals about them to warble and hum in protest. It was time to run the gauntlet and cut loose a little.  Too many depended upon him now to allow his skills to get rusty.  Choosing a familiar challenge seemed best.  He'd already run through this particular quest with Oscar and Hirru on separate occasions.

'It should be manageable,' he told himself.

Harkens returned a few minutes later and provided his scripted spiel.  Freyd nodded in agreement, giving the mob his moment.  His sandwich had long since been scarfed, along with a slew of other needed buffs.  The image of fat Elvis taking on zombie hordes kept forcing its way into his mind, but he just kept dismissing it.  This was how just things worked in SAO, if you didn't want to become a smear of fractal shards drifting in the wind.

The journey south to the Ashen Keep was relatively easy, especially when travelling through various gullies and gulches that Freyd had mapped in detail during previous visits - ancient stream beds long since run dry as a result of whatever catastrophe was said to have befallen these lands.  Floor fourteen's unusual Zack Snyder-esque colour scheme worked to his advantage.  Covered in blacks and charcoal, further blended with the sheer amount of ash and dust in the wind, Freyd resembled every other bit of flotsam riding the harsh winds scouring the broken ground.

A litany of ancient forgotten battlefields littered every inch of this region.  The scraps of red cloth still hanging off scraps of metal and armor served as a testament to how hard fought the Red Cloak's demise must have been.  A twinge of sympathy for Harkens and the others fluttered within.  Was the floor simply written this way, or did it actually happen while the players were busy clearing lower floors.  Could there be actual consequences to the pace of their progress?  It was a chilling thought, matched in ominous character by the ruins of Ashen Keep rising in the distance.  Broken towers and battlements feebly sough to protect what little remained of the central bastion, most of it having collapsed into the courtyard.  There was no reason not to enter by the front gate.  Nothing remained to bar his passage and the few roaming mobs out in the surrounding wastelands kept their distance from this place.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are!"

There was no point in being coy.  Freyd knew the revenants would be milling about in the various niches, nooks and tunnels surrounding the main central chamber in the heart of the ruined keep.  A broad assortment of mechanical constructs lay or sat in various states of disrepair around a large open hall.  It must have once had a ceremonial overtone, but now looked like nothing more than a devastated repair garage, half-buried beneath debris rained down by the collapse of the former floors above.  He'd never actually seen any of the constructs do anything and was beginning to wonder if they were little more than excessively ornate decor, or perhaps a bit of finely detailed design that had just never made it past the final cut.

Moaning and shambling from the shadows cut short his musings as a trio of undead humanoids draped in bits of crimson emerged and shuffled aggressively in his direction.  This was the first time he'd noticed that their remnant clothing was notably different than those of the warriors at Stonewall.  They seemed more... civilian?  It didn't matter much in the moment.  They weren't likely to sit down and tell tales while roasting marshmallows over an open fire, though that would have been a sight.  Instead, the Whisper broke into an open run sliding to sweep the legs out from the nearest target.  An acrobatic flip launched him airborne from where he came hurtling down so hard that the second revenant simply disintegrated, flattened into pixels by the sheer force of the impact and a surge of holy energy that impressed even Freyd.

"Hey!  Still got it, apparently, right guys?"

Neither of the remaining revenants were willing to meet his high five.

Both revenants lunged forward, clumsily, but still forcing Freyd to tumble sideways to escape them.  That was when he felt it.  Some sort of charge was building in the ground, focused around the nearest of the constructs, which flickered and buzzed with unwholesome energy - that kind implying that it will smash you into next week if it it allowed to reach full power.

"Oh.  So they actually do a thing?  Huh.  Well, now probably isn't the best time to be checking that out."

Using the momentum granted him by his roll, Freyd drove a fist into the gut of the nearer mob, unleashing the portal to the maw within and eating a path right through the middle of the thing's torso such that its upper half split in two.  His hand having passed clear through, Freyd reefed and flung the sundered mob into its counterpart where it simply burst into a shower of sparks - the perfect cover to conceal his follow-up strike.  Screeching filled the cavernous ruined halls, like the wails of a banshee on date night, ending the thing's miserable existence.  The hum growing within the constructs died and a glowing beacon of light arose from a nearby dais.

"So, some things new, but others not so much?"  Feeling restored to his hands, he glanced around to ensure that no more surprises awaited him before moving to claim the necessary prize.

The bundle of 'whatever-it-was' floated like a ball of white light, hovering just above the dais, or work table.  This place was looking more and more like some sort of pseudo-mecha hangar the longer he stared at it.  Reaching out, the glowy thingy pulsed as if it was requesting some sort of input and a UI interface immediately  popped up requesting a selection from all of the available weapon types in the game.  After making certain that there were no unusual Easter eggs hidden somewhere in the menu, Freyd selected martial arts and promptly dismissed the item, leaving it ready for later use.  He knew how this went.

Red lighting flashed and forked in the thick, ash-laden clouds hovering overhead.  Rain would not be a kindness in this place, likely being laced with sulfur, or worse.  Best to just skedaddle and get far enough fast enough.  Razsak Castle wasn't all that far.  It couldn't be for Lilith to so easily and persistently hound Harkens and the rest of his men.  A trail of dusty puffs was the only sign of his departure, racing back into the open landscape on his way to the next quest's next destination.

Razsak Castle.  Forboding.  Ominous.  Excessively gothic.  The whole thing just screamed 'Castlevania' as you approached it, especially with all those flying buttresses, gargoyles and other clichéd yet architecturally appropriate details.  As always, the front gate lay open and unguarded.  Lilith was overconfident, or just too lazy to close it.  Or maybe it had broken and she just wasn't handy with tools.  Never a good ghoul minion around when you need one, was there?

"Perhaps the road less traveled, this time?"  Steering clear of the main gatehouse, Freyd circled around to the far side of the fortress.  The moat trench provided little obstacle, having long since dried out.  Lilith had also never seen fit to fill it with magma or acid, or some other suitably villainous substance.  Wasn't she extra-combustible or something?  Might explain a few things.

"If this keeps up, I'm gonna have to make a list.  Maybe even issue fines.  She is totally slacking on the proper bad guy vibes.  Girl.  Whatever.  Tsk. Tsk.  Won't anyone think of the real estate values?  Broken windows, people!  Look it up."

Vanishing into the shadows between shadows, Freyd felt once again like he was in his zone.  Nothing better than going all murder-hobo on a hapless and irredeemable boss.

Lilith paced relentless back and forth in the central audience chamber of her claimed demesne, a pair of sycophantic spawns trying but failing to entice her back to the lavish bed that sat where a throne might once have been.  The male and female, likely both Red Cloaks once, tried every manner of taunt and tease, but their mistress remained fuming.

"Damn that Harkens and his stupid oaths and powers!  We should have finished them all off by now!  Beelzebub will be furious if they are allowed to survive any longer."  Several lewd poses from her pets momentarily distracted her from her rant.  Arms and legs, devoid of cumbersome clothing, beckoned her back to her nest to play with them.

"You two are incorrigible.  You know that, yes?"  Anger bled from her voice as she indulged in the blissful diversions they offered.

Sauntering towards the bed, she reached up to unbuckle the leather collar that would release most of her upper bodywear.  Then the world fell down upon her, crashing with enough force to make a Monty Python foot proud.  Freyd fell on his prey, knocking her senseless while he pulled the sheets from the bed and wrapped her up in them, kicking her infuriated ass to the wayside while he dealt with her minions.

"HEY!  Whoa!  Where's the R-rated label on this quest.  Keep it clean, freaks!"

The incubus sprang first, leaping towards Freyd in a frenzy with desperate hopes to buy his patron some time to recover.  His mate came swiftly after, the pair of them hissing and screeching as they clawed against the whirling dervish of shadows that was the Whisper.  Snaring an outreached arm, Freyd brought his elbow down hard even as he turned the joint to bend in the wrong direction.  A sickening crunch and howl as the man's arm shattered.  Dropping to a knee Freyd fell just under the second minion's outstretched claws and managed to snare her collar as she flew by.  Bracing a leg against a nearby stone column, the woman's flight arrested with a sudden, awkward jerk that saw her pivot face-first into the floor, her face smashing just before the rest of her.

"How DARE you!"

Ripping her own bedsheets apart, Lilith raged as the dregs of her servants spilled across the floor.  Even Harkens had never had the gall to chase her into her own home.  These people were defeated, and just cattle now, or so she seemed to think.  Hadn't they learned their place a thousand times over?  Typical villain.

"Nobody breaks my toys except ME!"

Freyd replied to her vampiric tantrum by grabbing Lilith's  wagging finger and twisting it in a painful joint lock until it snapped out of its socket.  The resulting blood frenzy wasn't quite the effect he'd hoped for, causing her to lunge with reckless abandon and overwhelming speed.  She slammed him into the granite block wall on the far side of the room with enough force to dislodge a cloud of dust and scattering of stone chips from the ancient and crumbling masonry, threatening to bring the cross-vault above down on both their heads.

"I might have miscalculated a bit on that one," he replied, mostly to himself.  One hand around Lilith's neck to keep her from biting him while both sets of claws pressed into the flesh of his shoulders.  "Dang, lady.  Breath mints!"

Bloodshot eyes bulged incredulously just long enough to give him the opportunity he required, which Freyd promptly put to good use by driving his forehead ferociously into her nose.

Pressing his advantage, Freyd punched her straight in the boob, following up with a practiced, lightning speed flurry that systematically staggered her, forcing her back step by step.  As the kata reached its final moves, Freyd dug deep within himself, channeling his focus into a final strike.  Lilith was caught under the chin and launched back across the room with the same degree of force she had just used against him.

Her limp body impacted the far wall hard enough to leave a waifu-shaped imprint in the block and a gasping groan as the vampiress struggled to re-combobulate herself.  Lifting her groggy head, she meant to protest when her badly shattered lower jaw simply disintegrated, to her considerable surprise.  Her eyes widened, only just realizing how much of her physical form had already fractured and broken beneath the deadly, oblivion-laced touch of Samael's Pride.

"Yeah.  I know.  It's a bit of a bitch, ain't it?"  Freyd closed the distance between them at a walking pace, flexing his fingers to restore sensation.  Fallen procs always left him a little numb.  Opening a gateway to the void through your hands will do that.  "But then again, so were you."

"You've no idea what you've done, or unleashed," she cackled, madness setting behind her eyes in equal measure to desperation.

"Actually, I'm pretty sure I just killed you, but if we just wait around a few more second we'll know for certain."  Her health bar was definitely depleted, but something wasn't right.  Mobs didn't normally last this long before bursting into puffy clouds of sparkly digital bits.  Remaining in a crouched, defensive stance, Freyd watched with concern as her form fractured but also reformed.  It was as if she was undergoing some sort of metamorphosis, transforming herself from the default state to something... more wrong.

Slow and steady clapping emerged along with the long, lanky humanoid form from an alcove on the far side of the splintering she-thing.  Definitely not human.  His features were unnaturally long, and then there was the metallic, scaled tail.  The new arrival also wore glasses, which wasn't exactly common among mobs.

"Oh well done, player.  But she's going to be so mad when she's finished putting herself back together."

"I don't have time for this."  Hooking his leg around the broken bedframe, he tug and lifted one of the posts up into the air, twisting and launching with a kick right at the should-be-dead Lilith.  The impact drove her crashing back into the alcove from where her friend had just emerged.  "And what do you mean by 'player'?"  No mob should know what that means, unless this was yet another of Cardinal's tricks.  That damnable program had no qualms about breaking its own rules, yet punished players for the most minor infractions.  Who the hell was this guy?

"You noticed!  How nice.  So many of your kin gloss over the details, thinking they can skip the cut-scenes and get to the goodies."  His unnaturally wide grin revealed too many rows of sharp teeth and threatened to split his melon-shaped head in twain.  "You beat little Lilith fair and square - trounced her really - as so many have before.  But I wonder whether you'll find her new upgrade form to be a more suitable challenge."  At the snap of his fingers, something burst forth from the scourged and bloodied body behind him.  Lilith 2.0, somehow reborn and looking a lot less PG than the previous version launched herself across the floor, looking for blood.

Her speed was unreal, dodging mid-charge beneath his counter.  Only a last minute intervention by Persi knocked her off course enough for her own attack to miss.  Freyd skittered to his feet a short distance away while his familiar bristled with blazing eyes, her inky form standing between him and his assailant.

"Yes, do be careful."  The devil's grin grew even wider.  "She does seem to enjoy toying with her meals."  Taunting aside, he made no move to join the melee, which suited Freyd just fine.  Monologuing villains were commonplace and he could easily ignore distractive blathering, if that was its intent.

Lilith, meanwhile, had become a right mess.  Her 'flesh; was gone, replaced by what resembles digital musculature constantly dripping blood all over the floor.  She looked like she'd been skinned alive yet somehow remained mobile.  Freyd felt something slick run into his lips and tasted iron.  A quick swipe and glance confirmed that he was bleeding too, from his nose, ears and eyes.  "Oh, I get it," he chuckled, trying to downplay his legitimate concerns.  "You're like a bloody onion to everyone around you.  Bitter at your own disappointing failures.  Sure, it looks very impressive Lilith, but I can still put you through the blender all the same."

Too frenzied to incapacitate, Freyd tried to redirect that rage against her instead.  Blood splattered every which way as they traded blows at blinding speeds, some of it his and some hers.  'Damn, she's fast,' he confessed to himself, but that also kindle an opportunity.  So long as he kept he close and trading blows, her position was more readily predictable.  Feinting an opening, he caught her as she made for his throat, granting him his opportunity to drive his fist up beneath her jaw.  Lilith's form staggered and slowed as it stumbled backwards, her attacks hindered and rendered less effective for a time.  Pressing his advantage, Freyd drove her back towards the far side of the chamber.

"Nice one!"  More patronizing clapping from their guest, or perhaps Lilith's true master?  "But, it's going to take a lot more than a clever trick to deal with her."  By the looks of her health bar, and as little as Freyd chose to accept it, he might be right.

"Fair enough."  His first acknowledgement of the devil's presence.  "Thing about demons and undead, is that they really can't stand the light."  Seeking to capitalize on his retort, Lilith lunged forward and snagged a bit of the shadow before he could fully dodge.   But, not enough.  Freyd became Montjoy and also the reverse as they swapped spaces.  His retribution struck with blinding white light that rippled across the entire chamber, further shattering the mob's already broken form.  Sparks and blood alike sprayed from the point of impact as the two combatants traded blows.  The space was caked in the detritus of battle, layering thicker the longer it lasted.

Notably, their observer had gone silent upon witnessing the strength of Freyd's latest blow.  His smiling certainty gone, his champion's health dipped below any fathomable threshold, Beelzebub was forced to re-evaluate what his mind had thought to be certainty.  Lilith was too far gone to care and further succumbed to her overwhelming rage.  There was no thinking mind left within to salvage.

Another colossal strike sent Lilith screeching back in pain, the Whisper's hands having gouged out fist-sized holes in her falsely impenetrable flesh.  Trying to hiss and roar, she struggled with the absence of half her jaw where now trickles of reddish motes trailed and crinkled like glass dust as it hit the ground.  He couldn't say that she hadn't taken her own toll on him, but it still didn't match what Ugzeke and others had managed.  Not even close.

A wry glimmer in the devil's eyes couldn't quite conceal the one ace he thought he still had left in the hole, only for his hopes to suffer further dashing as Freyd's grip twisted and reached behind him.  Instead of the familiar searing hunger of Samael's Pride, his hands felt a soothing calm and sense of driven purpose calling upon him to avenge the countless fallen Red Cloaks who died attempting to protect this world.

"Oh.  Did you think I forgot?"  It was the Whisper's turn to smile.

Lilith launched herself at him with reckless abandon and strength fed by vicious hatred for the very symbol of the things now clad about his hands.  They were anathema and drove her frenzy to a fever pitch.  Unaccustomed to the balance of his new weapon, Freyd's reactions slowed and granted her an opening.  Pouncing, the mistress of vampires caught him by the shoulders as she rose.  Using her momentum and supernatural strength, she flipped overtop of him and threw her enemy against a nearby wall, winding him for an instant.  Slumping back down to the floor, Freyd needed a moment to recover, but expecting that she would be upon him any moment.  Instead, an unexpected pause reigned.

"Well done, stranger," the devil spoke, his tone suddenly more civil.  "You have fought better than I anticipated.  But there is no purpose in continuing this experiment.  Take your treasure and go.  I, Beelzebub, shall allow it."

Rising back to his feet, Freyd watched curiously as the devil's outstretched hand held Lilith back, as if tethered by some invisible leash.  Try as she might, her neck was held by the unseen collar and prevented from pressing forward.

"Is that so, Beelzebub?"  Wiping more blood on his sleeve, it wasn't a sight to which he had yet grown accustomed.  The gruesome factor was unusually high for this effect, which seemed particularly persistent.  "Because I can't help wondering if you're just intervening now to save your pet from yet another demise."  Lilith roared madly at the threat, still unable to move.  "You're not actually sure what will happen if I use these, are you?"  His fingers splayed to signal the sanctified weapons adapted by the system to his skill sets.  "And that's the part that truly captures my curiosity.  You called me player and seem to know things you shouldn't.  If the rules have gone out the window, then let's see how this little scenario plays out."

Pale features streaked in red, Freyd flicked his fingers at Beelzebub's pet, baiting her to come at him.  To the devil's surprise and the sound of shattering glass, she overwhelmed his bonds and charged forward to trade another flurry of furious blows with her nemesis.

She was far faster and difficult to hit, but Freyd had finally started to peg the math on this particular fight.  For all her fury, Lilith lacked the resilience or sustainability of a player, and that would be her downfall.  He just had to endure and whittle her down by attrition.  The lightning pace at which they traded blows would have made any anime proud, but the health bars ultimately governed.  Hers was in the red, even with her unusual regenerative abilities.  He's watch the spraying blood coalesce and merge into her, restoring the brutal damage to her physical form, but it wasn't enough.  By comparison, he was still solidly in the green.  If she had another trick to pull, it would have been revealed by now.  Beelzebub's dour expression and attempted ploy confirmed that she did not.

Freyd's only fear was that the devil might join the fray himself.  Doing so would likely turn the tides, but the boss seemed governed by other considerations.  Perhaps Cardinal still held shackles of its own over him?

"So be it."  Eyes still concealed behind impossibly reflective glass, Beelzebub turned his back on the battle and his minion alike and vanished into the same shadowy alcove.  Strangely and slightly disconcerting, Freyd couldn't sense his destination.  Lilith's constant clawing made it impossible to focus fully on the tracking he'd need to follow.  Now was not the time.  Sidestepping her latest lunge, the Whisper brought his elbow down squarely on the small of her back, laying her flat on the stone floor in the process.  Without hesitation, his other hand came down with the telltale flare of another triggered power-up.  Light flared to blinding intensity as her shell fractured one final time and shattered into a field of broken shards.  The Red Cloak's vengeance consumed her in fanning flames that also stripped the weapon from his grasp.  When the light faded, Lilith, the blood and sanctified weapon were all gone.  For a moment, the strange colour palette of the floor faded, enabling his blue eyes to shine there proper colour, not that anyone was there to see it.
