echoes of a feigned title had reached night's inbox. it wasn't the interest for its namesake that seemed intriguing -- rather, it was the quest that bistro had mused upon as its direct relation, the same way night's own work had tied her into half-baked errands from the broker herself. the message had caught her whilst she was lazing together with her better half, and the player struggled to find the will to pull herself up from soft pillowy thighs. a hand was placed behind herself, upon the couch, steadying her slight rise. "interested?"

her interface shifted around as night directed it so with a finger. its contents were displayed to nari, alongside the map provided to the mark's locale. "though, it's been noted as one of the more challenging bosses of the game," she explained, wincing. the player wondered if she should've elaborated on the enemy's ability to manipulate time and space -- or perhaps, that was just an illusion cast over from the rest of the boss room? not enough research had been done on the subject. "i'll go full glass cannon if you think you're up for it."

Her eyes barely shifted over the menu directed at her, quickly taking in the information on it before nodding in response. The quest itself seemed simple enough – defeat the big bad man before he could defeat you. But something about the way NIGHT was going about it, and the general feel of the quest itself sounded far more than face value provided.

“Yeah, but do you think it’s going to give us an actual challenge? Lately things have seemed to be a bit…well, easy. I don’t want to go in underestimating a deadly encounter – that would definitely be a last mistake.” She glanced over the menu once more, taking time to study some of the verbiage, and the general information it provided. Not a ton. “If you’re going full glass cannon, I’ll focus on support. Typical tank/support role, I guess. Good thing I’ve been hitting the studio a lot, eh?”

She tossed a half-hearted smile towards NIGHT before bringing up her own menu, shifting around items to ensure she was best prepared for their coming encounter. She wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but if NIGHT was planning on going all in – that meant trouble.

A slight gaze towards Yuki, and then Nari found herself carefully lifting herself from the couch, gently forcing NIGHT up with her. It wasn’t her best decision to leave the comfort of the sofa, but she knew if one of them didn’t get moving that they’d miss out on the quest entirely.

Pulling up the menu, she called forth her vest, slipping it over the purple turtleneck and pulling the zipper up to her chin. Toque pulled down over her ears, she pulled the hood up – letting the fox ears spring to life atop her head once more, before bearing a large grin at her partner.

“Ready?”

the menu twirled on the spot if only so night could get a better look at the feedback gifted to her. "it looks more like a test of endurance. but with enough damage, we might be able to end it pretty quickly." though she wasn't exactly sure the limitations on orion's new skills. with the king stated to be a target of immense health, it was possible they'd find time to research how in depth the skills potentially went.

then, at least, she could move on to documenting the rest of them.

"i won't underestimate him," night added, tone in a whisper, as she rose from the couch. echoes of a past figure were stuck in her mind as she loaded her shortcuts with healing crystals, but even then she knew first-hand what she saw on her own. night wasn't so lucky to have seen encounters as such and make it out of there, unscathed, a second time.

the moment she was ready, she turned around with nari to leave, a hand flicking an ear on her hoodie. the player chuckled on her way out. "you've grown really attached to it, huh?"

Taking a moment to pull up one of her more important potions, Nari downed the liquid as quickly as she could. The taste was horrid, especially compared to the better meals they’d been eating lately – but she knew it would be worthwhile, and as she watched her health bar shift and grow – well, that was enough to convince her to suffer through the disgust.

“I won’t let you underestimate it. You just focus on beating it, I’ll make sure we stay alive. Got it?” The flick against the ear on the vest caught her attention, and she turned her eyes upwards as the hand passed over and away. “Hey. I don’t know what you mean. These are my ears.”

As if to accent her comments, she reached up and wiggled the fox ears gently, pulling them down against the top of her head as if to mimic a sad reaction – at the same time putting on a matching face, pretending to be upset.

Giggling to herself as Yuki chirped in response – likely a sign of disagreement, or anger at the display – Nari let the ears pop back up into place. “Also, it’s super comfy. And unique. Definitely draws all the stares.”

The outside was same as it always was – cold. Not uninviting to those who enjoyed it, like Nari herself, but she knew that NIGHT wasn’t a fan of the environment here. Tucking herself in close, she wrapped the girl in her arms in order to share her own body warmth with the other as they made their way to the teleporter pad.

she laughed at yuki's chitter just the same. "you're not fooling anyone," night returned, leaning into the embrace. she hummed, too, at the notion of having attention drawn to them. "sure." because as they walked into the main settlement, commentary proven apparent, so too did the player wonder if there had been any rumors about the fox-girl wandering through the floor just yet. and knowing she'd hear it from bistro at some point made her want to giggle, too.

through the teleporter and onto the twenty-first. cavernous as the floor was, it was through a set of winding and obscure tunnels that the duo would march into the necropolis, decorated with stone walls of hollow hallways and a multitude of porous windows. as though they'd walked right into a valley of death itself, the shadows of the cave obscuring what little light there was from the torches at the edges of the confines. further examination told them a dungeon, large and elaborate like a labyrinth was present -- and yet they were supposed to find a chamber locked away somewhere, somewhere the king might've isolated himself within.

night's thought to where he might be was immediate. "the basement...?"

Nodding, her eyes followed the path of her partner. The place was a labyrinth – there was no doubt about that, and as she glanced over it, she felt like the basement would be the best place. “Basement, closet, crypt. Something obvious like that. I doubt we’d just stumble across it in the centre of a nice, wide open, well lit cavern. Wouldn’t be dramatic enough.” Her eyes rolled involuntarily at the idea, knowing that for someone like the creator of this game drama was an absolute must. If nothing else, the original announcement had proven that.

She pulled up her menu once more, eyeing the other potion that she had considered consuming. She’d been saving it for a time exactly like this, but her old gamer habits had her hesitating. Shrugging, her face twitching slightly as she realised that hoarding would do no good in this world, she pulled forth the potion.

Although the other had a disgusting taste to it, at least it hadn’t burned like this one did – and not in the good, spicy flavour way. She managed to choke down the half-scream as her body consumed the potion, feeling as though she was on fire as it took effect. The slight coughing fit was sure to draw NIGHT’s attention, and she automatically waved a hand in the girl’s direction.

“Alright. Do not like that one. Ugh. The benefits better pay off, I feel like I have a fever. Or I’m on fire. Or on fire with a fever. Nine hells I don’t want to do that again…” Another retching sound as she tried not to expunge everything she’d eaten that morning, taking deep breaths in order to control herself. “Okay, let’s find this thing quick so I can get my mind off this feeling.”

"wouldn't that be more obvious?" after all, the more nooks and crannies they went looking into in a creepy large building, the greater the fear instilled into the adventurers. and if she'd been the first to venture here and investigate if there was the presence of a king here, she would've chalked it up to the atmosphere itself, given enough time and dead ends.

night lead them through an open window into a hallway. a quick reference to their map, and the stairs were quickly found. she placed a hand on her other's back once nari had started to cough, a pained expression as she looked to the bottle in her partner's hand. "what exactly did you just take...?"

if her pace was slow down the steps, she didn't want to reinvigorate the feeling of nausea induced in her other from earlier -- and yet, her eyes were fervently searching the dark for signs of where they should proceed to next. it was much more surprising to find the double doors, to the chamber, seemingly lit against the void, clad in iron and handles chained together. as she approached, feet swallowed by the shadows, she realized that there was ground to catch their footing despite the emptiness.

all the player could do was take a photo of the doors and send it to bistro. 'lighting glitch?'

her next move was to ensure nari was alright in her descent, and afterwards offering the way forward to her other. "you wanna break the chains, or shall i?"

She felt the hand on her back, and almost immediately gave a few extra coughs – just to keep the touch there a little longer. But as the hand receded, leaving an almost empty feeling, Nari responded to the spoken question.

“Immolation Potion. Supposedly makes me more hurty to those who decided to hit me. Which, let’s be honest, I’m super cute so it already hurts them emotionally. This just makes it ouchy on the inside, and outside.”

The mentioned doors caught her attention when Nari realised that her attempt to remain the focus was no longer working. Glancing them over, she eyed the chain wound between the handles. It looked like something directly out of any attempt to be scary scene that one would expect to find.

“I don’t know…might be ghosts behind the door.” She tried desperately to repress the giggle at her own joke – failing horribly – before deciding they needed to be serious, if only for once. Pulling up her menu, she stowed away the vest, leaving her standing only in the heavy armour, spear and shield in hand. “How about I break the chain, you open the super scary, and definitely not the boss room, doors?”

Without waiting for a response, she turned and struck the chain with her spear, listening as the metal rang throughout the hallway with the impact. A breath of pause, and then the chains clattered to the ground with a thud before disappearing in a sparkle of shards.

“Drama!” She smiled at NIGHT as she spread her hands wide in an attempt to be dramatic, before nodding towards the doors. “You’re up. And if you see anything, behind me. Got it?”

"what in the world are you talking about?" night had wanted to say, listening to the almost baby-talk definitions of trying to deal damage against an opponent. what came out of her instead was a chuff and a grin. and ghosts? at the sound of it, her smile fell away into disbelief, the player shaking her head. "too many," she responded. between the banshee hunts, the rumor on the twenty-seventh, the woman knew of more than enough hauntings for the rest of her life.

eyes watched the chains be shattered upon impact. and despite her ready approach to reach for the handles, the door creaked open on their own instead, leaving the entrance slightly ajar. despite that, there wasn't enough room for either of them to squeeze through the gap, and what was within appeared to be obscured by shadows. a tilt of her head, and night pulled open the doors, stepping backwards.

and she'd blinked, gaze pulled up towards the interior of the room. what she hadn't expected to find was the duo placed at the entrance of the necropolis again.

"huh?"

even as she'd turned around, the stairs she knew had been right behind them had fallen away. had they been wrong about the location of the boss? that couldn't have been right? it didn't feel right. the woman pursed her lips, a pinky interlocked with nari's own, searching their environment for any sign of oddities -- a trace of the forgotten king.

“What’s the matter?” NIGHT’s sudden question, then the turn. Nari’s eyes cut towards the other, befuddled by the confusion on her partner’s face. “Is everything-“

Her question cut off as she realised they stood at the entrance once more. Her confusion towards NIGHT’s reaction falling away, as the confusion at their current situation took over. She was sure they hadn’t been here a second ago, and yet she couldn’t deny their current surroundings.

“Something’s off here.” The whispered words as she pulled back her spear into a readied position, the tip quivering in the air. Her shield arm – the pinky held by NIGHT’s own, as if searching for comfort – remained loosely in place at her side, ready to move into action the moment it was required.

Her head swivelling as she tried to figure out what was going on, she took a hesitant step towards the entrance itself. She could feel her muscles tensing, her entire body on edge. The soft whisper of cloth against cloth drew her attention, and across the room she spotted what could only be their quarry.

Her doubt was driven away as the health bars erupted into life above the creature, the name of the main boss springing above the health bars in what Nari assumed was supposed to be a sinister way. Pulling her hand from NIGHT, she shifted before her partner, bringing her shield up and setting her stance as she gave the creature a hard glare.

“Go gcuire Morríghan cosc ort go huaigheanna na bhFomhórach.” Her words called out activated the skill she had held in reserve, seeming to draw the attention of the creature towards her. Without breaking eye contact from the Forgotten King, she called back to NIGHT. “While I’ve got the thing’s attention, you take it down. Be careful.

night squinted at the distance, the same direction she was sure nari had looked towards and found a threat of some kind. but she couldn't see anything out of the ordinary -- just darkness that blanketed the necropolis, similar to the sight they'd caught before.

she remained wordless, even as she felt the soil beneath them shifting. dared she try striking at the absent space? it wouldn't make sense to do so, but she trusted the words of her companion, even as their target (was it their target?) only seemed to appear to one of them. from behind, then, she rushed forth, gaze still searching despite taking to the air, sword brought to her fingertips and brought down in a swing--

--her eyes flashed for a moment, a golden sheen. and she fell forward, oathkeeper missing from her hands, the darkness taking her vision instead. stopped only by reflex and the sudden parting of her hands, night found herself near face-first upon the floor, nigh different from what she was certain the color of the ground was at the corners of her vision only moments ago. a look upwards, and a turn.

how'd they end up indoors? they were outside of the necropolis just a moment ago, and suddenly they were in the hallways, once again? despite nari almost certainly real beside her, equipment still donned, shield brought out because night knew she'd seen it being summoned as she was brought defense, she was just as certain they hadn't made their way back in.

her gaze snaked towards the distance, to where they were supposed to be, after entering (had they entered the boss room? she did remember--) the chamber before. hastened breathing. night was afraid to even break the silence.

out there, there were two silhouettes that looked just like them.

A sudden shift on the air, and where once there was some creature - some necroptotic being that Nari could only describe as lich like, wearing a crown and a skeletal smile – now stood two figures, similar in appearance to NIGHT and herself. It was enough to cause her hand to pause, as she stared at the mirror image of her partner.

“NIGHT…?” Her voice carrying the same confusion her mind felt, she took a hesitant step towards the alter image, the partner at her side forgotten for the briefest of moments. “What’re you…come on, we need to defeat this thing.”

She spun to her side, raising her spear towards the figure that had been in the corner of her vision. Her hand quivered as she found NIGHT, once more in front of her. The uncertainty gripped her, and for a brief second she found herself lost.

“I…which one?The question spoken aloud, although no answer was expected – nor did she listen to any given. Closing her eyes, she shifted her body again, quickly turning back to the first image that she had seen, before doing the only thing she could do – await the creature’s strike.

Her shield set, her spear levelled, she felt the confusion slowly drift away as she focused her attention on watching, and waiting for the strike. She knew that she would be the centre of attention – between her skills, and her heavy build, no enemy could resist her.

“NIGHT, whichever you are…I’m going to wait for it to come to me. Once it does, I’ll show it Morríghan’s Blessing.”

seeing the end of nari's spear once again instilled a different sort of fright into night. and she'd froze, stuck only until the shift of that blade was away from her front -- only then did the woman exhale and pulled herself to her feet. "what are you talking about," she mumbled, still on edge at their unusual arena, afraid to meet her shield's gaze. "i'm right here..."

though the battle plan was spoke aloud, night blinked, hesitant if she understood their situation correctly. "the boss? ... you know, i wasn't sure if i'd actually hit it the first time you told--"

her lids closed, then opened.

"--me to..."

and the wind erased her voice. for all of a sudden, they were whirling through the air, diving towards the grand outskirts before the necropolis, despite the cavern and the darkness, despite the two dots upon the ground that, upon time passing, night was certain were remarkably similar to them. mind working in over time, as she struggled to resolve their situation defying gravity. her gaze quickly shifted to nari, falling too. a sword art could've easily remedied their fall if she could get to her companion in time.

except, appearing in slits to build a form unknown, there stood before her a creature almost as large as the cave itself -- hollowed eyes, a rusted crown, with a bony palm raised towards the players.

there it was.

with her single art, night's instinct was to chase their mark first and foremost.

Another shift, another change. Except this time it wasn’t the visual, but instead the physical. Nari’s feet suddenly sliding beneath her, she felt herself thrown off balance – off the ground, entirely. As she tumbled backwards, barely able to keep her shield up and her spear away from herself, she saw NIGHT’s blade flash through the air.

‘Come on then, you spineless coward. Come face us.’ A triple attempt to right herself, without success. Nari knew her options were limited – but there was one thing she could ensure.

“Face Morríghan’s wrath, you spineless coward. Come feel the breadth of blade, upon your throat – and the judgement of a thousand, thousand lifetimes. Tar, mothaigh póg Morríghan!” The shout seemed to draw the attention of something, and as Nari felt the art activate, she knew that she’d at least accomplished something – keeping the thing focused on her, instead of NIGHT.

As she considered her options, she realised another change – her feet beneath her, steady and controlled. Blinking, she glanced around and found NIGHT shoulder to shoulder with her, the ceiling firmly planted beneath their feet.

‘Good, that’s over – ceiling?’ The sudden realisation made her hesitate – the shield held aloft, but the spear tip dipping slightly as Nari’s mind caught up with their reality.
